I think people in general not just gamers are getting tired of this dei to and fro between both sides of the media. I think we've now just had enough and this whole culture war will wane because people will just stop paying attention to the whole mess. I don't game as much anymore or listen to RUclips as much, tomorrow I am going on a 30km hike with a friend. I have been doing a lot of bushwalking lately and I am about to start another hobby away from gaming and gaming news etc. I feel we're all just tired of how long it has all gone on and poisoned the well of our hobbies and interests.

edit. I might have phrased that wrong. I do believe Mahler is genuine, he might be one of very few though. When the tide shift, don't be surprised when you'll see the most fervent supporters of DEI swear on their mother's graves they they never really supported it. That's why we will need to remember who these people are and gatekeep them from our industry.

I prefer not write it than a story that i'm not happy with. If i found a good idea of lesbian/gay story, i would happily write it but if i found a good idea of straight white romance story, you can bet i will write a straight white romance story
agreed, i have noticed this in some of my writing groups and I stay away from those who try to force the issue. its great to have characters from different walks of life and cultures and so on but forcing it is why I have had the hardest time reading romances lately.

Depends who is giving out awards. If the awarding body is exclusionary, and only ever acknowledges the achievements of those who align with them (like IGN or the Golden Joystick snubbing Black Myth & Stellar Blade), then those awards are utterly meaningless and devoid of value, and should be regarded with due contempt.
At the end of the day, awards don't matter: what really matters is pleasing your paying customers, not some tackey gold plated trinket that you hang over the toilet.

In the end the ultimate problem with any kind of "censoring" or manipulation (be it DEI related or otherwise) is that it oftentimes distracts and undermines the very goal any designer
of art and entertainment fundamentally has or at least should have.
And that is to delver an authentic, emotionally challenging, pleasing human experience that pulls the audience along to follow it and make actually interesting, new and fun experiences.
How are you supposed to do that, if you actively manipulate the entire game with the intent to NOT aggravate, challenge, question or even shock the audiences perceptions and thinking??
A designer or artist that has to put the crooked intent to not "trigger" his audience, due to "political correctness" or "heightened sensibilities",
will inevitably sabotage this very fundamental goal from the get go.
And on a more fundamental basis, it is IMPOSSIBLE to write a story or design a game that appeals to everyone, especially in world filled with 8 billion individuals. That should be obvious.

Yup, the core of my problem with the "woke" in gaming is that they spend so much of their time and effort hacking up IPs I've loved for decades. If they left "my" stuff alone and stuck to making their own, original IP, I'd even wish them every success. But when their original properties are things like Concord and Dustborn...well, I guess we can see why they mostly try to tart up older properties for that non-existent "modern audience", can't we?
I thought Dragon Quest XI handled having a gay character very well. Silvando was quite obviously meant to be gay and although his story with his father rejecting him subtly hints at that fact, Square Enix never put a spotlight on his sexuality and instead focused more on building his character into something the player could connect with. I'd dare say his implementation was "artistic"
It tends to lend to the narrative. Same as FF16's Dion. He was the perfect prince, an ideal heir to his father in every way, a living god even... but he was having a secret affair with his squire, a sign that he wasn't quite the ideal future emperor everyone though he was.

At the end of the day, Sex sells, and if a developer makes a game with good looking female characters and has no censorship the truth at the end of the day is that the game will sell. Even better if the story is good, character arc is good and gameplay good, then it's just like printing money.

Many stories or games are harmed or diminished with certain types of diversity.
Forcing diversity into everything is quite restrictive for world-building and story progression.
If you are telling a story about a Bee colony, it wouldn't be a good idea to make the main character a dragonfly and insert ladybugs, wasps, spiders and ants into the Hive.

I get the point you’re making, Vara, but personally I think neither dustborn or concord should be allowed to exist. Concord cost 400 million dollars. Which is terrible to investors, shareholders, and those employed under Sony. Then you have dustborn which TOOK taxpayer money from people to fund a game entirely based on pushing political propaganda. No, none of these games should exist. Just make a good game without wasting money and/or pushing agendas. I can only give it credit that they didn’t tarnish other beloved IPs, but that’s about it. Because even as a standalone original idea, a bad game like those still end up hurting people financially and mentally.

I think the best recent examples of good representation are "Still Wakes the Deep" and "Thank Goodness You're Here". Both of these games presented a specific culture. People from that culture loved the authenticity, but, they still had a broad appeal because gamers love exploring a world that feels real.
To be fair maybe Dion was a DEI character because SBI and BGG both worked with square enix.

I've loved Moon Studios since the first Ori game and have since bought both ori games on xbox, Nintendo, and pc. Also bought both soundtracks. As long as they continue to respect gamers and make good games, I'll continue to support them!

Pretty much, the DEI problem is a problem because most companies that chase it seem to forget that they need a good game first and foremost.
When the focal point of the entire project is the DEI stuff, the rest of the project suffers.
All they have to do is make it natural and subtle. Dion was a good example of it, so are characters like Cortez from Mass Effect, Zevran from Dragon Age Origins and when you choose for it to happen, Max from Life Is Strange.
When all the attention is just focused on them being gay or on their identity, that character is probably a bad character because that's all there is to them. Make a good character first and don't prioritize making them gay unless it MAKES SENSE.
It's not rocket science. Good lord man.
Why is the sexual preferences suddenly front and center in everything??? Just why? In most of the cases it could be left off of the entire game or show and it wouldn't make one iota of a difference...

It doesn't matter at all. I don't have to be the hero in the media I consume. I don't have to be represented...
