Let's compare four different Infusible Ink mug and sublimation mug transfer methods and see how they stack up. I have four different heating methods for us to try: the Cricut Mug Press, a traditional clamshell mug press, a silicone wrap, and a heat gun. This is my version of a mug press comparison showdown!
I appreciate every subscriber. It's free and easy to subscribe -- just click here: bit.ly/sub2jennifer
Now I’m a mug press newbie, but I was also a Cricut Mug Press newbie, so this is a fair comparison. I figure most of you are new to this as well, if you’re watching this video, so it’s helpful for you to know what an out-of-box experience is like for an experienced crafter like me.
Note that my affiliate links appear in this description.
So our first contender is the Cricut Mug Press -- see amzn.to/45h50Fq
. This is a user-friendly mug press that automatically detects and sets the right temperature and pressure settings for you, with one-touch operation. The Cricut Mug Press features a safety conscious design with a plastic housing that does not get hot, plus an auto-off safety feature. It presses mugs from eleven to sixteen ounces with a special heat plate that heats from the sides and base for a consistent transfer, even at the very bottom edge of the mug. The Cricut Mug Press is $199, but as it’s not out at the time I’m recording this video, Cricut gifted this one to me so I could test it out in advance.
Next up is a traditional clamshell mug press -- see amzn.to/3sNPCwY . I did my research and found a four and a half star mug press on Amazon, this one right here. There are several presses on there, and I’ll link to this mug press in the video’s description in the comments so you can see its specs. This mug press features a 3"-3.5" diameter for an eleven ounce mug and claims to be easy to operate, with adjustable pressure, automatic baking time, and automatic temperature. This mug press cost me just under $100.
Next we’ll try a simple silicone wrap (see amzn.to/3sQJxA0 ) that you clamp around a mug and put into the oven -- see amzn.to/30inndS . You shouldn’t put this in a household oven because we don’t want to mix fumes and food, so that also means we need a dedicated countertop convection oven that reaches at least four hundred degrees Farenheit. The cost of a silicone wrap plus an inexpensive convection oven is about $100 to $125. You can get better convection ovens fo a lot more, but we’ll stick with the cheapest option for now.
And finally, we’ll try a heat gun -- see amzn.to/3c7IpBg , which some of my fellow crafters have successfully used to transfer Infusible Ink ... so we’ll try it, too! You can get heat guns in varying sizes -- the one I used goes up to thirteen hundred degrees Farenheit, so it gets plenty hot. This heat gun was $62.
So which ones wins? Watch the video to see! You may be surprised!

Thank you so much for doing these tutorials Jennifer. You do all the hard work and research so we don't have to. You're the best!!! ❤
Thank you so much!
I'm a vinyl, crafty newbie & I don't plan on making or selling anything using sublimation/infusible ink right now, let alone mugs. If I ever do, I would definitely invest in a Cricut mug press. The ease of use, compact design, quick turn-a-round time & end product quality seems to be a WIN-WIN! Thank you Jennifer for all your tutorials & designs!!
Thank you so much! 😃
This tutorial is very informative, clear and extremely helpful. Thank you Jennifer for taking the time and sharing this with us.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for showing different ways of doing the mugs!!! I love that about you and your channel!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome!
Thank you, Jennifer, for all your informative videos. I'm new to Cricut, but love everything I've created.
You are so welcome!
You always make your tutorials so concise and informative. Thank you, Jennifer. I'm probably not going to buy the mug press because I no longer want mugs with all sayings, etc., having just tossed all of those in my home and bought a dozen beautiful mugs for everyday use. I know, poor timing on my part, but it is what it is. However, I do love watching what you do and I know I'll be enjoying seeing everyone's creations with the mug press.
We all do get to that point of downsizing, don't we, Charlotte?😂 Not everyone has to make mugs - cheerleaders are just as much appreciated as those who do the creating!! 🥰
Thank you, Jennifer! Can't wait to try myself.
Have fun!
Thank you for comparing various ways to heat press the mugs..was very informative Jennifer❤️
Thanks for watching!
Love the video!! New to the crafting world. Thanks for all the information.
Thanks for watching!
This really helped to answer questions! Thank you so very much😊!
You are so welcome!
As always, your videos are informative and fun to watch. Thanks for the info!
Glad you like them! 😍
This is one of my favourite videos! I love this!
Yay! Thank you!
Wow! Blown away! Thanks for the detailed comparison!
Glad you liked it, Amy! 😍
Thanks Jennifer. This was very helpful. I have been thinking of trying sublimation and I love your videos.🥰
You are so welcome! Isn't it a great way to experiment with sublimation? I think it is!!! 😍
Ordered my Cricut mug press last week and I’m happy that I did. Thank you for your review. ❤️
Wonderful! You are so welcome!
Thanks for your time and sharing this comparison video on mug presses -- great job! Might add the Cricut Mug Press later down the road.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much for this comparison info. I will be getting the Cricut mug press.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for letting us know about a
all 4 ways to sublimated mugs. Love it.
You are so welcome, Donna! 😍
Great comparison. Thank you for taking the time to share these results.
💐💐💐💐💐💐
My pleasure, Lorraine! 😊
I think this will be a wonderful new machine to add to my collection.
I think so too!
Thanks for a very fair and easy to watch comparison video. I purchased my cricut mug press and am eagerly awaiting delivery. I have made countless personalized mugs, tumblers etc. over the years using adhesive vinyl and always dread the question: “Can I put it in the dishwasher??”. My vinyl that I’ve used oracle 651 has always stayed in when cleaned on the top rack of my dishwasher. But eventually after a couple of years small pieces have come off. So I always recommend hand wash no scrubbing the design. It will be a relief to make gifts using the cricut mug press and not have to worry about dishwasher use not to mention the MICROWAVE! Great video!
Thank you SO much! Yes I know it's so exciting to be able to use these in the dishwasher and microwave.
I like the simplicity of the Cricut Mug Press but I’m not sure I can justify the price when it can only do coffee mugs. I wish that Cricut would have made it to do all straight edge (non tapered) cups OR at least state that adapters will be available in the future to do other types of cups. It would make buying it a better deal. Not a coffee drinker so I can’t see the need for this now even though I like how it works. I just wish they would make it like they did the Maker so it could adapt to do other things.
It needs to be a straight sided mug. It can't be tapered. Either Cricut mugs OR sublimation mugs. 12 oz and 15 oz size but the press can fit a 11oz to 16oz cup.
@@JenniferMaker - I know that it has to be a straight sided mug. I just wish Cricut would make some adapters/attachments to add to it in the future for other things to be done in it - in particular, taller items. I'd love to be able to do tall (non-tapered) cups in it as this looks like a simple machine to use and it takes up much less space than a traditional heat press. I love everything Cricut makes but I always want more! ;) Thanks for your videos - they are very informative and I enjoy watching them.
I also hope they do, Lisa. I want to make different size and shape mugs. :)
@@JenniferMaker Can you use your own printed sublimation images in the Cricut mug press? I’m just wondering If so if you have to wrap butcher paper around the cup.
I’ve seen people use a piece of corrugated cardboard to sublimate straight 20oz sublimation tumblers. Not sure if you would need the cardboard for 30oz tumblers.
Loved this, thank you! I had just been thinking I need some happier mugs and Cricut comes out with this🤗💜
Perfect! Happier mugs are its speciality, Linda! 😁🥰
Thank so much for the comparison, I already told my husband I want one ..
I'm so glad you like it!
I’m definitely going to get one as soon as they make it available. I am a huge Cricut fan since day one when it was still Provo craft. I love my Cricut products and I’ve never had any problems with DS.
Me too. Love all things Cricut and I too have had Cricut from the very start.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!!
You must be the only person in the free world to never have any problems with DS. I know hundreds who do.
@@elianaisraelnc7904 I haven’t had any problems either. What’s wrong with it?
Wow! I am so excited to see how easy that works!
Hope you like it!
Love the video and yes I will be purchasing this product very soon. I have bought all things Cricut and can’t wait to try this out.
Have fun!
Thank you sharing! I always learn so much from you !
You are so welcome, Kera! 😍
Thank you so much....I'm new to all this and love your work!!
You are so welcome! 💜
Great comparison Jennifer!!! I am so glad I watched your tutorial. I hope to own a Mug Press someday....soon 😁
I hope so too!
This was a really helpful video! Thank you!
You're so welcome! 😍
The Cricut mug press looks great and all but it really limits what you can use it for. If you’re using the convection oven method you can make not just coffee mugs but also tumblers (20 oz and 30 oz)
Thanks for the tip!
I saw your video for the first time and thank you it was very helpful
Glad it helped! 💕
Thank you so much, I have watched a lot of your tutorials and have learned so much! Greetings from Amsterdam!
That's great to hear! I'm glad you like them! 🐰
I’m so excited. I love new gadgets and yes I buy because they are cute. I bought the Joy despite having the Maker and the Mug Press is way prettier than the one that looks like a commercial one. Thanks so much for your informative, as usual, videos.
That is awesome!
I worked seasonal in the sublimation dept. for a company that does personalized items. We used a mug press and wrapping and placing in an oven. We did hundreds of mugs and shot glasses a day..crazy! It wasn't hard but then again, this was a big company. For home use the cricut mug press would be adequate.
Yeah! Cricut has almost made it foolproof which is what I am enjoying about it!
Thank you, Jennifer for doing this tutorial, very helpful!!!💚💜💛🧡❤️💙
Glad it was helpful, Valerie! 😍
I really feel you should have tried the traditional method again with the altered settings to get a fair comparison. Also think the oven method would be the best if you plan to do lots in one go as you are just limited by the size of your oven.
Can you put more than one mug at a time in the oven? I have no idea about that, but it seems that would be good for people who are doing a few mugs.
@@charlottec748 I don't have any personal experience but I can't see why not
Perhaps I will! You never know! 😉
I have no experience with that, Charlotte, but personally, I would shy away from it. I recommend not doing this in your home oven, because mixing silicone fumes and food is not a good idea. If you got a large convection oven, you could always try it, but I don't know what the results would be. 😉
Please see my answer to Charlotte! 😉
So glad I finally got the mug press!!!
Yay! 😃
This demo at least proves that the Cricut is the easiest and most reliable method. Love the compact size also. Having a lot of crafting supplies can be a monumental feat to keep organized in little to no storage space. Your tutorial was just what I was looking for!
This video was very helpful I have a traditional mug press and I’m really afraid of it , So I will be definitelytrying the cricut mug press Thanks for sharing !!❤️😀
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for doing this comparison!
My pleasure!
Thank you for this video. I had questions and they’ve all been answered. ❤
Awesome!
Can't wait to be able able get my hands on a cricut mug press!!
Hope you find it as fun as I find it, Joel! 😍
Thank you for another great video,! I plan to buy the Cricut mug press as soon as it’s available !
Awesome! Thank you!
This is super helpful. Thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching! 🧡🌻
Can’t wait to try it!
Hope you like it!
love the way the cute Cricut mug press looks!
Isn't it cute, Judy? 😂😍
Thank you for the video! I learned a lot!
You’re so welcome! I’m glad that you were able to learn something! 🌸
Thank you. I appreciate this comparison. I have had the same questionable results with the traditional mug press. Gotta get a cricut.
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful! 😍
Awesome can’t wait to get it
It is so much fun!!! 🥰
I really appreciate your reviews. I don't want to waste my time, money or supplies on a method that I have to figure out the correct setting, temp, etc.
I am most certainly not paid by Cricut, but they have the most impressive results that will save me time and money.
Thank you ❣
Glad you like them!
@@JenniferMaker I have been a cricut user since it first came out....
I did have trouble getting the design space. Then I bought your "cheat sheets".
Now, I am better but I still I still am tech challenged...I just keep plugging away.
Can't wait for this seems so much easier than the other brands and compact also
I love experimenting with the one I have!!! 😍
Can’t wait to get it !!
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine, Yazmin! 😍
Thank you so much! This was super interesting
You're so welcome!
I love that it's so simple and cute. But I don't want to only make that size of cups. I actually like the oven method since it seems like you can do multiple cups at once. I have respirators and maybe I can use the oven in my open garage?
That would be up to you to try! 😊
Thank you for this details.
My pleasure!
I really like/love your review. You show a different tools/machine/materials (i dont what the right word) with different reult👍❤️
Thank you very much! I'm so happy you found it helpful! 😊🌻
Love this! Got to have it!!
Pretty awesome, isn't it? 😍
Great video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you Jennifer I am definitely in agreement with you that the cricut version the way for me to go
You are so welcome, Deborah! 😍
I can not wait to get mine!
You are in great company, Amber! 😍
Thank you for letting me know about the fumes with the convection oven and wrap. I haven't used mine yet but did put the oven in the garage. I have a bad history of sinus issues. I'm seriously considering the Cricut press. My oven is new so I just may put it for sale on the Marketplace.
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you, such an informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
What about 20oz Skinny Tumblers? If doing those then you need an oven anyway
Would be nice if Cricut made a press for tumblers too
That would be super cool.
That is my issue. I am on the fence with this item. I own a Silhouette Cameo, preferring it over the design space and use of Cricut. I have limited space the this mug press would be great but most people these days are looking for beautiful tumblers not mugs. Variety would have been great.
Thank you for the comparison, very informative I do like the clean look and user friendliness of the Circut but dislike its limitations.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharig this information. I had no clue about the Mug wrap ad already own a convection oven we do not use for and before investig in ay press a wrap is cheaper to see if I will even like designing mugs. TY
You are so welcome!
Thank you , I was contemplating if I’m going to buy the cricut brand, now I will!
Wonderful!
I think this is a great idea. May have to save up for one!
Cricut also has a payment plan, Donita, but I would personally save up instead of doing payments, also! Either way, it is well worth it! 🥰
I haven't played with infusible ink too much but this is looks fun. I am going to have to get the cricut mug press.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you! That was a great video.
You're very welcome!
Awesome video! Very informative. New subscriber❤️
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video comparison
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🐰
Very educational thanks
Glad it was helpful, Ashley! 😍
I wish they would have made this tall enough to also do tumblers. I still want one even though I might not make very many mugs with it lol
It needs to be a straight sided mug. It can't be tapered. Either Cricut mugs OR sublimation mugs. 12 oz and 15 oz size but the press can fit a 11oz to 16oz cup. We have a Q&A here- jennifermaker.com/cricut-mug-press-ultimate-guide
Thank you for the video.
You can use a tumbler as long as it is 3.2-3.4 inches around. many other crafters have made tumblers as well as beer mugs.
If you type mug press on eBay they sell one tall enough I’m in the U.K.
Many of the traditional mug presses have interchangeable heating elements so that you can do different size mugs as well as different shapes. In fact, some presses let you switch out the element to also do T-Shirts, caps and other items.

Thank you that was very informative
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Jennifer ❤️
You're so welcome!
Can’t wait to get it
Hard to wait, isn't it, Cindy? 😁
I just watched another crafter sublimate mugs with a heat gun and she said to take off the transfer paper and use heat tape instead. This would probably work better for your sliced version than lettering alone. She also cranked her heavy duty heat gun nearly all the way up.
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
I only work with the convection oven and never have any problems with it. No headaches or anything else either. Because even with the Cricut mug press, vapors come out, then it should be like that. Because the oven is nice, I can also sublimate plates and other big things, which doesn't work in the small mug press .Great video Jennifer Thanks for the comparison
-----------------
You are so welcome!
thank you for clearing this up. I like that the mug press gives you easier and quick results. i honestly like both but for safety use with curious teens. I would prefer cricut mug press!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!😊🌻
Your awesome thank you for this love love your tutorials
Glad you like them!
Looking forward to the cricut mug press when it comes out
You are in the best of company, Norah! 😍
I really like this!
Thanks!
I have a traditional double mug press that never gives me any issue. I didn't have to hunt down for different temps nor did I have an issue finding the timing for my press. If you ask your dealer that sells you one they will tell you timing and temps. I have used my sawgrass as well as cricut paper and pens. The only fail I had was I put my paper on wrong the 1st time in excitement. I have bought the Cricut mug press. It will ship on the 11th, I am told even though I paid for it today. I will give it a shot to see how it truly compares. I appreciate the attempt. Using the heat gun is just too silly and crazy in time and safety.
Thank you so much for watching!
Hello! Excellent video, thanks for sharing it so we can see the difference between one method and another. Will you have a tutorial showing how to sublimate the inside of the mug in full color? I've watched a lot of videos and can't find any. Thanks!
I have not tried that, nor did I know that was something that can be purchased.
Ok. Thanks for answer. ❤️
Can't wait to buy a cricut mug maker!!!
It is awesome, Brittney! 😍
I normally am a proponent of Cricut products, and I can definately see the ease of use. I also normally love seeing your videos, but in this instance I can see that Cricut bought this commercial from you. Not being prepared with the right temperatures, and times really disappoints me. We as your followers deserve more from you.
Cricut did not pay me to do this. I simply followed the directions that came with the products as a simple test. I was very surprised with the outcome of all 4 methods.
@@JenniferMaker they literally paid you $199.00 when they sent you the free mug press. And you know what? I don’t fault you for it, but why do a comparison video when you can’t give each method 100% accuracy.
@@JPVisuals1 That's odd, because I thought she did give 100% accuracy as to what she did. Note she also said, in further reading about the mug press from Amazon, that she had the temp too low and didn't leave it in long enough, so user error. Using the convection oven proved to be as good as the Cricut, but she did warn about fumes.
yes I would like to see a redo between the cricut mug press and the conventional press with the correct settings and no video editing, if it takes to hours then it takes 2 hours i want to see all of it, as the conventional press has been the one that has done mugs for EVER
Cricut does NOT pay me to say anything I say. I am a Cricut fan girl, however, and I love their products so you'll observe that I am biased toward them ... but only because of that. This video was intended to compare out-of-box experiences with all four methods, as I explained. Did you see how good the silicone wrap came out? If I was trying to only make Cricut look good, why would I have shown that? This is a faithful account of my experiences. :)
I think that the Cricut mug press is definitely neat and great for someone who won’t be getting in too deep into sublimation. However, I have a traditional mug press for my sublimation. 365 at only 60 seconds is definitely not enough heat or time. 385 at 180 seconds will transfer the ink perfectly.
The Cricut Mug Press isn't for everyone, Christine! But neither is a traditional mug press! 😉🥰
The cricut mug press looks very easy to do and space wise fits nicely in
Yes! The compact size is a huge plus!
I used a heat gun and it came out just fine. Used it on the back porch, so great ventilation and didn’t take me (actually my adult son) that long. But I also cut a piece of Teflon, taped it over and tightened it, adding some extra pressure. I think the Teflon helped even out the heat. Wouldn’t suggest it for people selling their products but for the occasional crafter like me, it worked just fine.
BTW, I was also able to do a tumbler using the heat gun, which the mug press doesn’t do.
That's great! 😃
Excellent! Thanks so much for doing a comparison! I have been debating for MONTHS between the traditional press and the silicone wrap method. Have you pressed again with the traditional press at the increased time and temperature?
I have not, Jessica, but that's a great idea! Would you suggest it for me so I can remember? You can request it here: jennifermaker.com/projectrequests/
Im definitely getting one
Awesome! I'm happy to hear that, Cheri! 😍
I feel like a kid at Christmas waiting for March 11
Yup. Counting down the days
It's going to be so exciting to see what everyone makes! 💖
Me too. LOL!
@@LifeasCerena I have one of those also.
Thank you for the video, all your videos are great learning tools. I have a clam shell cup press and had great results but would love the easy to use Cricut cup press . Can you do sublimation print not just infusible ink. I understand Circut wants you to use their products but the press is expensive and so are the infusible ink products. It appears no one has answered that question, only mention using infusible ink. Again thank you.
Yes! You can use your sublimation printer AND the mug press.
Personally, I can not see using any of the other three methods to make a mug; but, the Cricut interests me and I can actually see me using it. It will be a game changer for me!
We're in love with how easy it is to use. 😊
@@JenniferMaker I can't wait!
I like how compact the Cricut mug press is.
I do too! And it's cute. :)
Thank you so much for the demonstration. It is very clear who the winner is 😉👍🏻
You’re welcome 😊
Love this
