Glass Mugs in the Cricut Mug Press: Will they break the press?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2024
- Today I am testing glass mugs in the Cricut Mug Press. Will the mug press break if I use glass mugs? I am pressing a bunch of glass sublimation blanks to see if I can break the press. I have seen a few videos on RUclips of the Cricut Mug Press giving an error after pressing glass mugs. Plus I have had some readers have the same issue. So, I am giving it a try in my Mug Press from Cricut to see if I can break it. Will these glass coffee mugs break the mug press? Let's find out!

Hi, thanks so much for this video! I wanted to let you guys know something about the glass mugs. The problem with the Beer Stein was most likely temperature shock. The trick is going to be to pre-warm the mugs before putting them into the press because the glass is temperature sensitive. If any part of the glass is colder it will crack as the rest of the mug heats up. The heat causes the glass to slightly expand, and it shrinks when cold so if the entire mug isn’t heated evenly it can cause a fracture where the cold meets the hot.
I’m a glass blower by trade so I know a little bit about glass. These glass mugs are most likely made of cast soft glass which is much more susceptible to temperature shock, but if you have the opportunity to buy borosilicate glass or mugs this won’t be an issue. Borosilicate is built to withstand the heat, and it’s also more likely to be consistent thickness and straightness because it’s made using a scientific glass tube which has a very consistent wall of glass.
Thank you!
You read my thoughts exactly. I was also thinking about pre-heating the shirts and then thought about the time I put a hot fish on a glass plate and it shattered!
The frosted mugs are BEAUTIFUL!!!
Awesome video and testing!! So good to see you working out these issues for us! Thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for doing this. I have been thinking about ordering some and I hadn't heard that it broke the press. This was a huge help!
Thank Angie for this demonstration, great information, very useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this thoughtful test and inputs! Really appreciate it! 😀
No problem!
Thank you for all the mug testing. That was really nice of you. I will keep that on mind not to use glass mugs. The tumblers works perfect!
You are so welcome!
Great test and really useful. Love the designs
Glad you like them!
Very happily surprised you're press didn't break. I've seen a few videos where they broke too. Not going to take the chance. Thank you very much for this video Angie.
🌼🌸🌻🌹🏵🌷🌺
You and me both! But it didn't!
👍🏾. Great demo, I learned so much. I’ve just bought the mug press- not used it yet but just getting all the info before use. This vid has been very useful, thank you.

Love your videos. They are always so informative.
Glad you like them!
Omg I finally found this tutorial again! I started to watch this and it closed out without knowing the title. So glad I found it 😊 This was excellent information and now I know not to use glass
Glad I could help!
I really appreciate how thorough you were with this.
So great of you to do this video! You test so we don't have to LOL I love that you are willing to go above and beyond to help out us "little people" 😁
Glad it was helpful!
Another great video of what works with the Cricut products! Thanks again!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for taking a risk to clear this matter up. You gave us a lot of great information.
Glad it was helpful!
You are always so very "spot on" with what we need to learn. My theory about the folks who broke their Cricut Mug Press is that they're probably treating it as if it was a commercial machine. It's doubtful that they used an external timer and expected the mug press timer to "do its job" with rapid succession of glass mugs.
Thank you, thank you for taking on that scary challenge! I have been thinking about the frosted mugs, because they look amazing when done. However, now I will stick with the ceramic! The beer glass breaking was scary! 😱
Thank you so much for this wonderful experiment Ms Angie👍🏻🍺☕️I was going to buy some glass mugs now I think I will just stick with ceramic for my Cricut Mug Press until my tumbler press comes 👍🏻😊
Wonderful!
Thank you for testing this for us. I wondered if it was possible to use frosted glass mugs.
Very helpful, thank you!
thanks for the video. very helpful.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Brilliant video. Thank you, really informative x
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Angie
Thanks for the info great tutorial
Glad it was helpful!
i thank you for your beautiful tips all the time .🥰 but i use my cricut Mug process all the time for a while now i have no problem.
I have yet to use my Cricut mug press. Your video is extremely helpful
I'm so glad!
Very good information
Thanks!
Thank you
I have done up to 6 cricut mugs at a time and didn’t have an issue. I haven’t tried the glass mugs. They look so nice
To be clear, there are ZERO issues with the Cricut Mugs. The issues have been with glass only.
Thank you for the video! I only make one at a time and I had problems with the timer as well then the next time it worked! Maybe a firmware problem???
I did a sublimation print on the glass beer stein. The glass didn't break, but the mug press did. Totally inoperable afterwards.
Hi Angie!
What a great and informative video as always! Thanks for doing all of that testing.
An idea, after watching another of your videos, came to me that may help solve the "wavy walls" issue on those glass mugs and perhaps keep the mug press timer from stalling. What about using the thinnest one of the ? Do you think that would help? Wouldn't that create enough pressure to offset the "wavy walls" issue?
Thanks again!
Maybe? I am not sure?
Hi Angie, Thank you for all the testing that you do so we can have a better idea as to whether we want to go down that road or not. Very much appreciated. One question. When you refer to Butcher paper, are you referring to Parchment Paper, or Freezer Paper? Thanks again.
Try this: ruclips.net/video/zrERc-9RzGE/видео.html
Do you only have that problem with the glass ones that the timer stops working? Or do you happen to have the same issue with tumblers or anything else… just curious love your videos they are awesome so much helpful info thank you 🌹
amazing
I have a theory.
I'm pretty sure the glass doesn't dissipate the heat as well as the ceramic, and the thermistor (basically the component that reads the temperature) gets overloaded and stops.
It's just a theory but based on the fact that you can let the press cool and then use it again normally tells me that it's just an overloaded thermistor.
I might be wrong, of course.
I would say that is a good theory. I don't know why some people's presses are getting an error that won't clear however. I just wish I could replicate a broken press!
@@AngieHolden could just be variations in components? And maybe some thermistors are more tolerant of overload than others. I’d love to get my hands on a broken one to see if I could fix it with a replacement part.
That could definitely be! I am always fascinated by differences in things!
@@AngieHolden In my 27+ years of dealing with electronic components it never ceases to amaze me how much variation there is in the same part over time HAHAHAH
My timer works hit and miss also, regardless if I use a tumbler or a Cricut brand mug. I just use my timer on my phone as well and it always works fine....green light stays on ...I just don't get the timer all the time. I wonder if It has anything to do with the temperature of the blank rather than the type of blank itself.
Hi Angie. Love your videos and have learned so much and you have taken away my fear with the mug press. My question is …. Have you done a sublimated wine glass in the Cricut press? Looking for 50th wedding anniversary gifts and want to try it!!
You would have to use a straight wall wine glass. This press will not work with a traditional glass.
@@AngieHolden Thanks Angie. Do you know of a source for these flat sublimation wine glasses, by chance? 🍷
Thank you... just love the tips. Did you test polimer mugs?
They are sublimation mugs.
Angie, very good information. Have you tried using the thinnest pydlife insert to account for the sides of the frosted mug not being straight? I don't think I will be doing much of these but it is a thought to correct the pressure needed for sublimation on the surface. Thanks
I don't recommend using glass in the Cricut Mug Press at all.
Your video's are so educational. Thanks for all you do.
Where do you purchase your high quality sublimation blanks, other than on Cricut. Thanks~
Try this: ruclips.net/video/K3ZIxoGz9ro/видео.html
This happened to me right out of the box with the Cricut mugs. I just turned it off and unplugged it and the next day the timer was working. I don’t think it’s the glass mugs per say, but the press itself
Perhaps it is!
I suspect it has to do with the beer Stein having to be upside down. There's no place for the heated air within to go and pressure would increase. Regular mugs have the opening up allowing some of the heat to escape.
That could definitely be true!
@@AngieHolden no actually it could not, there is not enough of a seal around the rim to keep air in
The beer stein looked to me that it was a bit to wide for the mug press. I really don’t know because I don’t have a mug press so I don’t know what sizes can be put in it.
Question for you : can I take the etching cream and just do a big patch on a glass and then sublimate on that patch; because it looks like those frosted one are just etched.
No. These have a sublimation coating on them.
I want to know also. I will check Amazon
They are on Amazon but please use at your own risk!
Yes, I just checked Amazon. They have them
Thanks for this video! I just got my mug press and this came just at the right time :) Just wondering though, you did say you were going to stay away from the beer stein--did you or did you try again? If so, how did it go?
I am not doing any more glass.
Thanks for doing this! How many cricut sublimation mugs can you do in a row before you have a problem with the mug press?
I have never had an issue with any of the Cricut mugs.
My husband mentioned that the beer mug may have cracked because it might need a little air gap instead of sitting it on the bottom 😀
Hi! Just saw your video on using silicone wraps fro the skinny tumblers. Do you think that using the wrap to could help by evening the surface and enlarging the size a bit?
I have been too scared to try it.
Hello..can we use regular
blank mugs or it has to be sublimation coating mugs only?
Sublimation coating mugs only.
My timer only works once and a while with any tumblers or mugs and it has been that way since the first time out of the box. I cannot figure out why it works sometimes but most of the time it don't. It still heats up even when the timer doesn't work.
Yep! It happens to me too!
I was wondering. Have you tried doing the cricut mugs back to back? Could it be thst the press is not having time enogh to cool down inbetween? Can you dovthe same testvwith the cricut mugs?
Cricut mugs back to back have zero issues.
Off topic your hair is really pretty.
Thanks!
hello , nice tests just like everyone I saw glass mu’s and was about to get them.
say I sublimate one glass mug not back to back do u think it will still brake the mug press? Sorry if I did not catch if u explained that answer already 🙄
I am not sure. It seems some people break it with just one.
Thanks for doing this test. It appears that the mug press is simply getting too hot. Have you tried using it back to back with the Cricut mug? It seems since unplugging and cooling the press caused it to work again, it would happen with all blanks. Just my thoughts. I don't have an extra press so I won't attempt it
Yep. I have made MANY mugs back to back that are just regular mugs with no issues.
Could you do a ceramic beer stein you think?!
I would not.
I love the frosted glass mugs. Are they dishwasher and microwave safe?
They should be!
Hi Angie I was just wondering if you can sublimate the frosted mugs in a convection oven because I have one at home?
Yes you can! I go over that at the end and there is a link to my video on ovens in the description.
@@AngieHolden thank you 😊
I have done coffee blank mugs up to 6 to 8 in a row with no issues. So is it just the frosted glass that is the issue?
Glass mugs from what I have heard.
Can you use sublimation mugs in a electric oven. And thank you for the test.
You can do it in a convection oven. I have a video linked in the description.
Where do you get the frosted mugs
They are on Amazon but please use at your own risk!
Are the designs infusible ink?
Hey Angie, Can you use infusible ink on can glass tumblers? Can you use a tumbler press?
Yes you can.
@@AngieHoldenAwesome would you happen to know the time and temp?
Hello Angie I saw someone use glitter HTV on a dollar tree mug and adhered it in the mug press have you ever done that?and does it really work?
I actually don't recommend HTV for mugs at all so no I haven't tried it. HTV is the worst product in any testing I have done.
Hi thank you for your videos they are helping so much But!! Please help what am I doing wrong as I keep getting scorching marks on my mugs is it because I’m using 11oz many thanks 😊
Could be your mugs or your tape. If you are using Infusible Ink, look at the lines from the transfer paper.
Can you use a pint glass drinking cup in the mug press
I would not use any glass blanks.
can you put a tumbler in the mug press
Try this: ruclips.net/video/Vx-o3Kht5_Q/видео.html
Have you used non-frosted sublimation glass mugs?
I haven't used the mugs no. But other clear glass blanks.
I pressed a couple of glass sublimation mugs the other day with no problem. However, when I tried to turn it on today, the light stayed orange, the third light came on, and it beeped three times before turning off. I looked it up and it is known as Error 4 (E4). I haven’t found any troubleshooting instructions. Have you come across this before?
Mine has NEVER done this but I have heard of it. You can try calling Cricut!
Question the beer stein I'm interested is frosted so I'm curious would it break or would it work . Or should I just try it.
I am not putting any more glass in my mug press. I don't recommend it.
@@AngieHolden okay would it work will an old school press that you can adjust its pressure.
Would you recommend doing a variety of mugs in a row?
I haven't had any issues doing anything I have wanted. I think I would stay away from glass mugs.
I did a skinny tumbler, and then a glass can and now my mug press won't power on and instead beeps 3 times and the middle LED light comes on and it won't start and I can't use my mug press. Is there a way to fix it since this video was posted? Please help!!
Not that I know of. You can contact Cricut and ask them.
I’ve watched all of your mug press videos hoping that you’d show pressing a 20 ounce skinny tumbler. As far as I can see you didn’t. So, If I want to press a skinny tumbler would it be ok to press it right side up and then turn it upside down and press it again?
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/_gDdD1N-9_k/видео.html
Have you gone a libbey class can?
I have done similar glass cans but in an oven.
hello Angie, I bought the watercolor trees print any tips for getting it to upload into design space for some reason no matter what i try to upload it as it won't go
I didn't have any issues so I am not sure.
So, I looked through the comments to see if anyone said this before I did... but I'm wondering if the glass broke because of the amount of pressure you have to put on it to get it to lock in? I noticed you had to press really hard, like as if it was just slightly too wide. I've never seen anyone have to press that hard. Were your other steins the exact same width? I just feel like that amount of pressure with the extreme temperature would crack it.
All of them that I made were exactly the same.
Have you tried the beer glasses in it?
I did in this video and one broke. I don't use glass in my mug press any more.
Looks like I’m going to need to order a spare mug press 🤷♀️
are those sublimation designs?
Yes they are!
I can't help but wonder if the problem is doing so many so fast. But I know you said it works fine with the regular ceramic ones. So odd
I have heard some people say theirs breaks after just one. I am just not sure.
@@AngieHolden well that's really annoying, especially if it's your very first time using it and it immediately breaks, and you have to get another one.
I feel like the timer not working is a production/programming error on cricut's part
It has to do with using the other blanks and the sensor that tests the temperature.
So how long should we set our timer for, when sublimating glass?
I think she said it was 4 minutes ???
Correct. I find 4 to 4 1/2 minutes works well if the timer on the press doesn't work.
Coastal Business Supplies has clear glass mugs 11 oz can you try one of those?
I am not trying any more glass.
What about mason jars? Do you ever try them? I wantt to try on glass jars.
You would have to find them with a sublimation coating.
Have you ever used magnifying glass for a mug?
No I haven't
Will there be issues if using an oven?
Nope. No issues with that.
Hi my name is Anna.would you show a video Etching on metal
I have videos on engraving metal. I have looked into etching but the chemicals scare me.
Thank you for putting your mug press at risk for the team ☺️
Of course!!
Rubbing alcohol has a cooling effect. I wonder if the glass chilled slightly after you cleaned it. I would be interested to see if the glass came to room temp again if the same thing would happen?
I think perhaps it was something to do with that but I won't be trying it again.
Hi Angie
Do you need a mug press? Or can you do them without?
I have two ways you can do them without a mug press in the description. A convection oven and a tumbler press.
@@AngieHolden thankyou so much for your great videos and for your help. Xx
On my 1st one the light quit but they exchanged it
Interesting! I don't understand why I can't get mine to break! HA!
Mine just wouldn't turn on again and Cricut sent me a new one.
I have a question 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️is it true that Cricut is coming out with a adapter for the mug to make bigger cups ?
I haven't seen or heard anything about it.
@@AngieHolden thank you for the reply. One of my friends keep telling me that’s he saw a video about it .
I haven't seen anything! I would love to check it out if you find it!
Are you using heat tape or regular scotch tape
Heat tape! You can see my comparison here: ruclips.net/video/UrSdDvjQGNE/видео.html
@@AngieHolden thank you
Has anyone tried the frosted coffee mugs in an air fryer?
I tried today for 4 minutes i didn't work that design didn't get out of the paper , what i did wrong
