Steve - the small steps that Alicja observed @ 11:51 was by design. Attackers using the stairs would presumably not have much knowledge about the castle interior and possible defenses so they would most likely wear armor or chain mail and would have to move much slower to feel their way into an area. Should they move too quickly, they'd more than likely fall leaving themselves open to attack, plus adding in the dark interiors and circular stairs - all 'nasty' defensive elements.
What a lovely 'simple' video, no drama just two very relatable lovely people sharing there thoughts in dramatic scenery. One of the best Steve Marsh (and Alicja) videos i have watched. THANK YOU.
The heather, bracken, canyon, crags, waterfall , haze of a light fog and morning skylights, Scotland, breathe it all in, be still my heart. Thanks, you two.
Nice to see my home town featured. The island is just called Castle Island. The big one is called St Serfs. There are actually two airfields nearby. One to the west of Kinross is the site of the former RAF Balado and used by light aircraft. The other is Portmoak Airfield the home of the Scottish Gliding Centre on the other side of the Loch beside Scotlandwell. (If you are interested in a look round I would be happy to show you). For a coffee you can't beat Unorthodox Roasters just at the Mercat Cross. We also have the Loch Leven Brewery Tap Room a short walk to the north of the town centre - a good selection of excellent beers brewed on site.
@@thealbagalavanter9986 it’s worth a trip. I’ve taken the boat out there a few times when I was younger. Also kayaked out to Castle island and St Surfs. Back in 2010 the loch froze over and I was able to walk to the castle, that was an awesome experience!

I have an affinity for your great country of Scotland. My dad was stationed in Aberdeen during the war years and he told me so many stories that I always wanted to see it for myself but it's never happened and probably never will at this point. So, I'm living vicariously through your amazing videos. You say there's no view? I think the views are amazing being a flatlander prairie girl from Saskatchewan, Canada. Thank you!
YOU are a Super Star, no two ways about it. The calmness in your travel. Amazing. Amazing to slow things down and truly appreciate all that we take for granted. An absolute inspiration x
That faintly disappointed voice "Built in 1540 - quite modern, then" made me laugh. Camping is brilliant and I appreciated the "site clear" check on leaving.

Great video (adds another trip to my bucket list) safe to say ill be attempting this castle trip next year Thanks again guys for showing us viewers stuff like this that like yourself have driven past 100s of times and never thought to explore the area 😁
This is probably my favorite video, yet. Between the tour and history of the castle and its island, followed up with the beauty of Glen Vale and some nice shots of Kinross, great job. With many other creators' videos, I find myself quitting after a few minutes (especially if presented with a long ad break). Your videos, Steve, keep me interested until the end (and I make a point of watching the ads before and after). This is one worth more than a single viewing. Thanks again for your efforts -- and Alicja's contributions. They always contribute to getting my weekends off to a great start.
Gorgeous! Like you, I live near here and have had so many questions to ask about this beautiful place. Thank you for exploring it and for answering my questions!! Love you two 🎉❤
Another Great video. Was in Dunfermline over the weekend. Today I was doing a job in a nursing home and one of the residents asked me if I could turn the TV on for them. The aerial was not working. But it was a smart TV. So I put on You Tube, your Channel Steve. (Outer Hebrides). The older man said please keep this on, and you should have seen his big smile on his face. Now other residents are all watching your videos. Really look forward to your videos. Thank you again Steve. 😄
So thankful for this video. You brighten our days with your good mood and your courage to do things we wouldn't. I now reach places in my heart I could never reach for myself. Thanks.
I’m like you Steve, passed it many a time. When I was a young apprentice plumber working in Edinburgh I had an old Morris 1000 and before the motorway was built I drove through it between Arbroath and Edinburgh. I remember it had one of the largest car auction sites in Europe at the time.
Its hard to beat Scotland when we get the weather, awesome video Steve👍The end of September is like winter, good old Scotland😆I have also passed Loch Leven many times and never stopped, need to put that right😉
Nice video Steve! Your video took the wife and myself right back to the 70s/80s when we were in our teens/twenties. We used to camp on that very spot where you pitched. Many happy memories of days out hiking around the Lomond hills. The rock formation above the site is known as Knox's Pulpit. Though its doubtful that Knox ever visited the site, it's believed that the local Presbyterians of the time used to gather there as the lie of the land on the opposite side of the stream from your camping spot forms a natural amphitheatre. The rock itself used to be much larger and had a ledge with a small cave behind it which you could easily climb too, however I believe there was a rockfall some years ago and they removed that portion of the rockface making it inaccessible for safety reasons. We stay in the North of Glenrothes and the Lomond hills was a hikers paradise right on our doorstep. Lots of interesting spots to visit around those hills. The West Lomond, which you camped under, is the highest and well worth climbing for the views, but it is also the most remote to reach, let alone strenous to climb! The East Lomond, better known as Falkland Hill, is not quite as high and a much easier climb, particularly if you drive up to the Radio mast / car park & picnic spot on its eastern slope. From there the summit is a short easy stroll and the views are equally as good. Loved watching your trek to and from your camping spot carrying all your worldly goods. That is a fair old trek with everything in a rucksack, let alone carrying it all by hand! 😁
Lovely video of your trip to Loch Leven. The airstrip that you mentioned was used as a glider base by Edinburgh University in the 1970s when I was last there and it still is the Scottish Gliding Centre. The island on which the castle sits is simply called Castle Island according to OS maps.

If I get my act together I’ll put a wee summary together. Meanwhile I’m dropping a beer to you and Alicja. Cheers from Ron n Evelyne.
Nice area to explore, we went there to buy some holiday chalets at a camp near to the car park you drove to for your walk, Kinross is a really nice wee place, and it's good to see the two of you once again on the video, All the Best to you both.
D'you know, despite having been in Kinross many times, I've never been there either, so thanks for this one, guys - it looks absolutely delightful! I think it's called "Castle Island," by the way. I can't think why - can you?? The wee chute that is common in castles is probably the latrine - think about it....! Kinross House used to be open to the public, but I've a feeling it's now private. Have you been Lochore Meadows Country Park at all - just north of Lochgelly? I'd recommend it if not - and be sure to take your kayak... the loch has only been there for the last 40 or so years; and it's islands are actually fragments of an old railway embankment (West Fife Mineral Railway, which continued to Kelty and then to the south of Loch Fitty, before curving back into the west of Dunfermline, joining the closed Stirling - Dunfermline line). There's everything from watersports of all kinds, to ancient woodland there - as well as a rather nice cafe and visitor centre. Glen Vale has a car park? That's a new one on me. Also, I've walked along the big path you went up to see if there was a view many times - blissfully unaware of the wee valley with the waterfall alongside! It was do-able from Glenrothes back in my teens, when I often camped in the Lomonds with friends - though we usually went somewhere around the then new car park at Craigmead, on the Leslie - Falkland Road. There used to be a tall, slender pillar of rock attached to the rock above your campsite that at some stage became fissured so that it formed two rocks, one on top of the other. From the distance it looked vaguely like a standing figure and, what with local tales of witchcraft and all that, 'she' became known as 'Carlin Maggie'. Unfortunately, the 'head' fell off about 40 years ago, and it looks like the 'body' part has now gone too; so maybe she got parole after serving 400 years or something, who knows?!! You're also not terribly far from "The Bunnet Stane," which is a huge, mushroom-like rock formation right at the foot of one of the steeper paths up West Lomond - which you also access from that road your car was parked on - just a wee bit further on towards Gateside.
Nice short trip mate. The trip to the waterfall area was interesting. Despise the abundance of water the geography and layered cliffs reminded me of a much hotter or drier place, not something I thought of in Scotland.
Beautiful scenery , beautiful sunset , lovely island and castle and two beautiful people. What more do you want? Thank you both that was amazing.Regards from Malta xxx❤❤
That was a brilliant video, i remember reading that Mary Queen of Scots had been imprisoned in that castle years ago but had never seen the castle before. I loved the castle and also the grounds on the island, totally beautiful. Hahaa 'Romeo Romeo let down your hair' I love it! hah 😆I thought the island had a kinda Wicker Man feel to it, like from the 1973 movie settings. Your videos are all beautifully filmed, absolute knockout 👍
I do look forward to my Saturday evenings, here in my little town in New South Wales, Australia, to virtually join yourself, Steve, and Alicja, on your adventures. You have inspired me, and whilst not quite as game as yourself, I'm working on getting myself a little fitter to hit up the Bridge Climb over Sydney Harbour Bridge, and a lovely little walk from the Spit Bridge, to Manly, about 10km, also in Sydney, this coming Nov. A little treat from my 52nd birthday.
Looks nice there, you could have packed a picnic and eaten it whilst awaiting your return boat. Or with a bit of prep, could have been snacking all the way.... There is some lovely country around Scotland.
Remember Steve; stay on the path and keep off the Moors, beware the full moon. Lol It would be eerie to watch an American Werewolf in London on a tablet in a tent on the Moors. 😱 .

Oh Lochgelly noted! Especially if it's a good place for the kayak! Cheers!
There is another stone pillar called Carlin Maggie on the north side of Benarty.
Nice short trip mate. The trip to the waterfall area was interesting. Despise the abundance of water the geography and layered cliffs reminded me of a much hotter or drier place, not something I thought of in Scotland.
Princess Alicja looks gorgeous in her Jurassic Park attire!
Beautiful!
Awesome view at 30 minutes! Really nice trek.... And that Island with the Castle was cool! Thanks. And what a Morning - Glorious!
Here's your Camp....

Happy Birthday when it comes :)
thank you Steve for taking us so meany beautiful places that we might never have seen thank you
I love Loch Leven and Lockleven Castle.
I’d only ever seen it from afar! It was great to get a wee bit closer :)
@@steve-marsh I managed to visit it last year. I'm glad that the two of you enjoyed yourselves.
how beautiful is nature, isn't it? thank you Steve and Alicja
Looks nice there, you could have packed a picnic and eaten it whilst awaiting your return boat. Or with a bit of prep, could have been snacking all the way.... There is some lovely country around Scotland.
Fantastic video Steve and Alicja well worth it
What an enjoyable video, thank you so much - beautiful
Whatever the weather and whatever happens, Alicja always has a smile.
So glad you’re in kinross mate, been at the green hotel many times for a show
Remember Steve; stay on the path and keep off the Moors, beware the full moon. Lol
It would be eerie to watch an American Werewolf in London on a tablet in a tent on the Moors. 😱
.
So lucky living up there. I LOVE Scotland. I’d move there tmrw if I could
Wow absolutely stunning ..thank you for sharing some beautiful sights
Gorgeous place, I could smell the heather from my cramped studio. Loved it!!
