I have OA in both joints. No pain. My pain is my facial muscles. My discs aren’t in place (one recaptured, one doesn’t, upon opening) but my lower jaw feels best if I jut it forwards a millimeter or so because that takes pressure off my condyles somehow. I love this video explaining all the facets of OA.

What sort of TMJ Orthotic is it that decompresses the joint? You mention MORA in a different video, but I was told I am too old for it. Does Invisalign help the joint space? You did not mention the Gelb appliance but I have heard bad things about it lol.

My jaw doesn’t hurt and I can open and close. But sometimes I feel as though it’s about to lock up. I’ve had lock ups in the past. Even though I have no pain I have horrible stiffness and discomfort. So much so that I’m constantly preoccupied with how my jaw feels. What is degenerative disc disease? I see a TMJ specialist but he’s very superficial and seems annoyed when there’s no improvement.

Hi I am so glad that I found you. I have seen many different specialists for many years and was never given a full explanation of my problem. I have learned more from your video than I have from anyone else. I have severe TMJ arthritis. I have had amniotic injections, steroid injections, PT, massage, acupuncture, laser heat therapy, mouth guards and Botox. I have had Botox done 6 times. The first two times it worked and lasted a year each time but the last 4 totally failed. They were no help at all. Do you have any idea why Botox would stop working? I am desperate for pain relief! Thank you

In terms of things to help slow my OA, I’ve tried #1, #3, #6. I’ve been looking for a place that does acupuncture and if that doesn’t help, I want to see if I can find a doctor who can inject steroids into the joints.
(I did have several rounds of Botox but only on my masseters, pterygoids, and neck muscles - that won’t help my OA but the facial soreness I have all the time lessens with Botox)

I have OA. The muscles inside my mouth are always red and rigid, and asymmetrical. Would an orthotic hypothetically/potentially help loosen up these constantly tight intraoral muscles? Massage barely does anything anymore, because I've degraded so much and am considering getting an orthotic to at least save one of my joints even the other is getting replaced.

Hello Dr. Priya Mistry, I want to ask you a question, and I hope you will answer and answer. A patient came to the hospital where I work suffering from TMJ ankylosis. The patient did radiotherapy in the neck as a result of having cancer in the lymph nodes in the neck without undergoing surgery more than a year ago. We did panorama rays, there is no Bone adhesion in the joint, but when I examined the muscles when I did the palpation test there is steffness in masseter and sternocleidomastoid ‏and muscle and other muscles of mastication and neck and muscles is very hard in palpation My question is is it useful to do sessions with the J5 TENS device For such a case and how many sessions the patient needs, I hope you will respond to me because the patient is suffering severely because he is unable to eat. He can open his mouth less than one finger.

I have always suffered from Teeth clenching/grinding, but since I have the orthotic this problem has increased drammatically: I wake up many times at night noticing that I bite the splint so hard like a dog biting a bone. As a consequence, the jaw and temporal muscles ache even more than before I started the therapy. Is there an orthotic which could cure both malocclusion and bruxism? Could extracting the lower molar tooth potentially worsen the issue of disc displacement in the jaw joint and jaw clicking?
Because I have an old silver filling that broke, I went to the dentist and they placed a composite filling for me, but the pain still persists even after the filling. Additionally, the tooth is severely cracked and fractured, and I can taste metal in the tooth after it broke.

Or still some slight resistance when opening wide? Will this possibly resolve as they continue wearing the orthotic even though treatment with you is over, or is it just something to deal with that won't go away?

There’s really no great training in medical or dental school for TmD. The one speciality program that’s recognized focuses more on stress relief and medications when I’ve found that TMD is often more structural. It’s definitely a medical issue - bones, joints, posture, alignment, etc. And I don’t see treatment covered by medical insurance often though in my opinion, it should be.
