Bruce Lee was ahead of its time with a world that felt larger and a bit more open than the typical action game of its era. For funsies, we're also going to check out a great homebrew port of the game to the Sega Master System.
The Jeff Gerstmann Hall of Fame returns! - Игры
"I'm Bruce Lee, this is my game"
Is this not even based on a specific Bruce Lee movie? It’s just Bruce Lee: The Game? If so that’s pretty great.
I played this obsessively on my ZX Spectrum 48k back as a kid.
always liked playing the (cracked) C64 version I had as a kid. Had no idea about the SMS fan remake. It looks awesome!
Played this on an IBM PCjr. 2nd joystick could control the green dude. My brother and I used to grief each other that way.
Might seem weird with Ninja and sumo coming after Bruce Lee, when he’s Chinese. It could be a reference to Big Boss, but it’s probably more likely that the (probably) British dude who made this back in the day was like “ITS ALL ORIENTAL TO ME!”. I was certainly like that back before becoming enlightened by the TV show Shogun. (Yes, I’m also in my 40s how could you tell?)
I freaking love this series, man. Thank you for doing it
Quality content. Love it, Jeff.
This game really reminds me of Metroid.
I've got my original Commodore 64 still in my closet somewhere. Well technically it was my Dad's c64. Been thinking about pulling it out and see if it still works. I know I got a copy of Bruce Lee in that disk tray somewhere.
The biggest problem with keeping C64s alive is that the PSU breaks and burns out the motherboard when powered, as they suffer from poor quality capacitors, so be really careful about turning it on. You'd probably either want to get a C64 PSU saver or checking the voltage of the PSU before connecting it to the computer.
This seems like a gameplay loop that could work with a roguelike treatment - especially as the enemies interact with the traps the same way players do
That's something about this game that really stands out to me, too - the enemies taking environmental damage in all the same ways as the player. Not something I'd generally expect from games of that era, though maybe I'm wrong.
The modern generations of consoles needs Guy Fieri: The Game to compete with the C64
I played this very late(my friend somehow got a C128 in 93ish) and still liked it. It’s got that mysterious Impossible Mission vibe to it.
Whoa Bruce Lee made video games?
Somebody made this joke a long time ago, but it bears repeating: Yamo b there.
Return of the jedi, Revenge of the jedi. I believe it goes by both names
Shocked it wasn't first game announced
Im glad jeff and me share a part of our childhood
these are the sounds of my childhood
Had this fantastic game on my Amstrad cpc 464.
this game actually looks pretty rad. thanks for showing us Jeff. really loving this series.
My brother and I played this loads on our four-colour Amstrad PC1512. I don't remember ever actually getting very far, and given the magenta, cyan, white and black palette, I never knew the sumo guy was meant to be green until today. As I recall, any hit was instant death; might've just been the Amstrad version, since many games on that machine apparently played very differently than other versions. (Finally playing the 'proper' Drakkhen and Prince Of Persia on SNES a few years ago was a gigantic shock - the Amstrad versions had been far more brutal and confusing.)
Definitely don't remember any instructions for Bruce Lee. It was all trial-and-error back then. You could punch? Never knew.
I really really enjoy this Holl of Farme series!!! But also, kinda wish you'd've picked anything else since you already covered this pretty thoroughly on Encyclopedia Bombastica.
Feel like I have watched you play through Bruce Lee a billion times….and I will continue to watch you do it a billion more 😎
You are so right about how this game felt in the era. I can still remember playing it on the atari 8 bit, and making it to a new screen, and then having to trial and error out how to get past that level, and by then you were probably down to 1 or 2 lives, so without cheats you had to go through the whole game to get back to it, and repeat. I definitely played the original many many times even after I was able to complete it without difficulty. Great design.
Yes, it's 20 screens, it's on the back of the box, it does feel like more. So at some point as I would count them to get an idea how close I was to the end. Much like miner 2049er it was a showcase kind of game you would show your friends.
I see how the homebrew genesis port might be fun to run through with the more modern feel / look / and speed. There was something about how slow he was in running and climbing in the original and the threat of the ninja and Yamo catching up to you and the amount of space / time you needed to run to jump kick the enemies that seems essential to the difficulty. Seems like they tried to make up for that some by making Yamo climb as well but that's easily overcome by how fast you can kick and punch. You never really need to use the various traps in the game to kill them the way you do in the original.
Played this in monochrome on the family Amstrad back in the day. Prob around 84/85
Legendary from Mr Gerstmann as always. thank you sir i will take another
My god I haven’t thought about this game in 30 years
Are these the games that made Jeff?
Really appreciate this series, Jeff. Your perspective on games of this era continues to be the most interesting and engaging out there.
