The true prodigal nature of her is that she combines a beautiful, expressive voice with a technical understanding of the music and song structure that together, is virtually unmatched.
Angelina stated very early on that there would be no Angelina Jordan if not for Billie Holiday
and I can understand why she places Billie on a musical pedestal far and above any other
singer. I've enjoyed Billie for many years and she is deserved of being called the most
improvisational singer of all time. Angelina, using Billie as her true musical mentor, mastered
so many facets of Billie. She emulates the 'breathy', 'whisper-like' inflections that Billie invented
for ballad singing, as well as a host of other elements that included going from talking to singing
within lyrical lines, unique phrasing, tonal gymnastics and emotion laden penetration to the
listener that was beyond mind boggling. Billie lived the pain she brought forth in her recordings
and Angelina is able to reproduce it in her ballad renditions. Also, on occasion, Billie would try to
emulate the actual sound of specific musical instruments, which Angelina also did in her rendition
of 'Titanium'.
Lady, this was a culling round, to sort out the best of the young ones. They had too many in competition. As you saw, the judges were happy, that Angelina made it. They already loved her dearly.
When the younger judge stumbled upon Angelina´s rehearsal for the 3rd song, he told his colleagues afterwords, we got us a real genius for sure. I am paraphrasing here, but Mr. Omer Bhatti told this in an interview in Norway. He was the protege of one Michael Jackson.

The judges thought Angelina was just mimmicking the original artist and when he saw her during the rehearsal for the 3rd song giving instructions to the guitar player on how she wanted it played, they were floored.

What’s so amazing about Angelina’s early performances is how much she improves with each one. Her next song on NGT is her cover of Bang, Bang. I’m old enough to remember both the Cher and Nancy Sinatra versions in the 60’s. I can say with all honesty that Angelina’s version at 8 years old is my favorite. She has an unbelievable ability to express melancholy, and you’ll see that all through her career. But watch this stunning cover of one of my favorite early Angelina songs. Steven Van Zandt, the main star of the show, Lillyhammer, was one of the first famous people (The Sopranos et al.) that she met that helped put her into a TV show-besides Norske Talenter, that is. If you look there, she’s gone on to be quite an IMDB star already! ❤️

Great reaction Lauren....glad you checked out Billy's version first to understand what this little girl is doing here...Voice teachers at this age have left her alone, just natural musicality and talent having studied the Jazz greats since a baby thanks to her Grandma Mery.... this is something you will not see from a normal child singer at this age...maybe "Wheels on the Bus go round and round" or something. Even at this age, one of the best Jazz singers that exist. Cheers, more Angelina please.

Angelina is an ongoing experience that *happens to you. What other recording artist has a 10 year video trail behind her with hubdreds of moments and sublime but definite growth and maturation. She brings all this to starting a career at 18. Its been an engrossing and enthralling and i can't wait to see if she can get her composer. Dimash has Igor, Diana has Brandon Stone, Maybe Toby will understand this challenge

When Angelina sings we are immediately drawn in.
She clearly channels the original artist. And do you realize that you have never and will never hear a child (CHILD!) sing with this timing and pace. She is eight. Yes! Eight! It is just not possible. A couple of fans have mixed her with the original music. It is astonishing.

The important thing is how many 8 year olds do you know of that can do this and this well. I first heard this in November of 2017, three days after stumbling across 10 year old Kazakh singer Daneliya Tuleshova. Both of these kids stunned me. I've been around music and all types from Country Western to Opera, and in my 73 years cannot remember ever hearing two performances that were as improbable as these two offered up. But it was Angelina's that was the most impossible to me. She never lost the pitch of the song, and to start from a cold start the way she did, and still maintain that till the end was impossible. It is no less so today.

If the episode showed her performance in the correct order, Angelina went last. The kid in the glasses and hat (whom you pointed out) had trouble singing his selection, so he was not in a great mood when Angelina stepped up to sing. Later, he was seen backstage crying because he thought that he'd blown it. (This as the judges were conferring in private, choosing which acts would go on to the next round.) Interestingly, the way Angelina "loses her voice" at the end of many of the lines is not too different from the kinds of problems that kid and some of the others had. Their problems were apparently brought on by nerves. Angelina managed to make her own imperfections seem like artistic choices (which they very well might have been). That at least some of the imperfections were not planned is evidenced by a very brief, very slight negative facial expression she gives at one point in the full performance. (For this version that actually aired on TV, they cut out about 50 seconds of her singing - the full version was posted to either the TV channel's or the show's website, and can be found here on YT by searching for her name + the song title + the phrase "Full Version".) BTW, the kid in the glasses made it to the next round (the live semifinals), but he didn't reach the finals.

From what i understand, this round was a special round because too many younger singers passed through so this round was to cut some of them. Apparently no music was allowed unless you accompanied yourself on an instrument. I’m thinking that may be because there wasn’t the time to get music together for all the contestants.

I also recommend listening to the version of this same song that Angelina recorded at the age of 12 with the accompaniment of an orchestra. It is quite an experience to see her working in the studio during one of the complete recording takes and with an incredible interpretation of this Billie Holliday song. It's beautiful. (Link below)

Watch out which version you take: From "I'm a fool to want you" which in Norske Talenter AJ sings a capella; there is a shorter version because there are 54 seconds cut out. And these 54 seconds are so good - even with speaking in - but the good thing of this version is, that you can't hear that there is something missing: AJ hit exactly the notes even after nearly a minute...

I actually have done Adagio by Lara Fabian! I also just listened to a very interesting version of Je t'aime, which will be coming out for the general audience soon, but I'll probably have to listen to a more classic version of at some point.
She has had no vocal lessons only music lessons to learn the guitar,piano,flute and violin, but no vocal lessons.
