Truly the best part of the show! I’m not sure what this content has to do with actually playing the game D&D, but it’s entertaining improv none the less.
I don't watch Kevin Smith stuff other than his movies so I was surprised how rough of a player he was and gained immense respect for Tiffany not only standing up for the DM but how involved she was. Definitely not what I expected here.
His guest appearance on Relics & Rarities was much better than this. He talked quite a bit but it was in character, not disruptive. Also, he was the only guest, the rest of the players were regulars that didn't mind sharing the spotlight, so it worked out for him to get to talk the amount he wanted. That game was in person all at one table, which also helps I think, that he could interact socially with the other players with eye contact without having to talk all the time. But also, he knew it wasn't just a silly one-shot, it was part of a serious mini-campaign. So he was probably much less stoned for that game. Agreed this was rough. In that other game, he had the DM's help (Deborah Ann Woll) to make a character with useful stats and abilities that were fun for him, vs. here where most of the players rolling attacks seem to have +0 in their primary stat, so just +3 modifiers from proficiency. Total garbage builds that are weak in combat. On R&R, he was playing a warlock with Voice of the Chain Master that let him keep talking in character even when they split the party, but it didn't feel like he went overboard. Like I said it was almost all in character, not cracking dumb jokes. He even had some useful ideas, and improvised some useful deception. So if you want to see a better version of Kevin Smith playing D&D, check out ruclips.net/video/BH34BVTQzRs/видео.html Or start from the beginning of the 6-episode campaign, it's really good and the DM (Deborah Ann Woll) is amazing. One of the most under-rated actual play shows; a different vibe from both Critical Role and Dimension 20, with an emphasis on puzzles. (Not that Kate was bad here or anything, but the limits of what she had to work with in terms of players taking the game seriously were a factor, and knowing how to use the rules at all. And it was just a beginner one-shot, not a mini-series with a budget and physical props.) Anyway, I think Relics and Rarities got Kevin invested in the game and the storytelling, vs. here he was like "when are we going to fight" or "what would have been cooler" after the DM narrates something. Yikes. Probably was a bit too high for this and/or the style of the one-shot just didn't click with him.

Grab some friends, doesn't matter if you like them or you think they like you and try to play a game. Part of the adventure is learning how to play for the first time.
Look up "Dungeons Dragons Adventurer's League" and that should show you some places nearby that run games. AL games are generally very accommodating to beginners.
I grabbed a essentials kit and got a load of my friends together and started. then I joined a games society at my university and found few people. Learning to DM is always an amazing thing to do because can get games together quickly and you learn the mechanics and the game quickly too
Right actors are always over the top at at the table. They can be difficult because they are all used to being the focus of attention. But this was a fun group. I enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one Monday night on IGN's tik tok.
An hour and a half game with new players is very tight. I've had to do this a couple times and you're not going to get in more than one or two encounters. Add in the fact that you have a bunch of comedians who are there to be funny, and they're going to slow the pace of story to a crawl. A linear adventure with a social encounter as the climax was absolutely the right choice IMHO. The statement from Kevin Smith about the adventure not requiring the players was massively missing the mark - she was clearly setting them up for a social challenge which could have ended a couple different ways.
Listening to Reggie Watts describing his character, i bet it's not his first D&D session. The options chosen are soo specific i got that "here's a vet player" vibe ^^
