In Kenney Jones' book, he said the reason he was brought in to do sessions for the Tommy movie soundtrack was because Keith had become so unreliable that Pete brought in other drummers to play on it to show him he could be replaced, in the hopes he'd get the message and clean up his act. The story goes that Moonie tried to go on with the actors for their final bow, but was physically restrained by the stage hands. Ms. Mirren was not at all happy at all this and confronted him afterwards backstage, to which Moonie innocently replied "'Ere, I only wanted to take a bow. I always do it when I go to a Led Zeppelin gig." Don't know which version is true, but Dougal's is funnier.

For Led Zeppelin that's a fact. However, it wasn't the case for The Who as during 1977 they had been using Kenney Jones as a fill-in substitute for the ailing Moon for rehearsals of Townshend's new songs that were being auditioned for The Who's possible next album. Both Daltrey and Townshend had expressed concerns over Moon's state of health which had rapidly declined over the previous year, where The Who's final gig in Kilburn in December 77, confirmed that Moon was highly unlikely to ever be able to go on any kind of tour ever again. The following recording sessions with Moon on the 'Who Are You' album were fraught with difficulties. Moon's final appearance on stage filming for 'The Kids Are Alright' film in May 78, clearly shows his total physical decline as his performance is embarrassingly terrible.
By January 79, just 4 months after Moon's death, Kenney Jones was confirmed as the new drummer and anybody who attended any of the concerts during 1979, 1981-82 will tell you just how good they were.
To say The Who ended when Keith Moon died is complete nonsense.

I wonder if he knew Keith and even partied with him? It's possible, I remember Joe Walsh saying how insane and actually frightening it was to hang out with Moon-Joe Walsh of all people! Who was also a legendary drunken loon! He knew he should perhaps quit the drinking and drugging when he went to a party in New York or somewhere and woke up in Paris! He had no idea how he got there.
