The best description of Moon's style was from John Entwistle: "Keith didn't play music to dance to, he played music to fall down stairs to".
He represented the wild, unrefined expression rock and roll was supposed to be - nobody played with more personality than Keith Moon (guitarists included).

They used to say The Who's music was for fighting, not dancing. Roger has said as soon as Keith joined the band, the music became more aggressive.
There was supposedly an interview where John was asked how he became such a great bass player, and he said "Having to keep up with Keith Moon."

Moon was a surf music fan and was influenced by the Beach Boys' Dennis Wilson's drumming style (although he obviously changed it quite a bit!). In almost all rock bands the drummer is kind of a supporting player. The film Spinal Tape with its serial drummers even made a joke about it. But Moon was just as much a Who core member as Townsend, Entwistle and Daltry. And his drum patterns mirror the music beyond the typical mere keeping of the beat.

Moon will never win any awards for technicality and was not schooled or refined in any way behind the drums. So, many of the drum guru's out there will deride him as a sloppy, lazy performer. But there was NO ONE in rock before or after that sat behind a kit and generated the kind of explosive, frenetic wall of sound that Moon created. Roger Daltrey said the first time he heard him play, it was like a jet engine taking off. They controlled him somewhat in the studio but like Hendrix, you had to see him live to appreciate his genius.

Having heard live performances of most all the groups with the "Best-Drummer Ever" over my years.
My opinion based on pure musicality, sense of rhythm, complimentary content, and overall best entertained by is Ginger Baker. For me, moon was fun to watch but is far down on my list as far great rock drummers go. And I saw plenty of him at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.

First he dropped a few names of solo-recording drummers. Then he started with "There were also drummers like Keith Moon. ... actually, there were no drummers like Keith Moon!"

John Bonham is the THE greatest rock drummer of all time.
Nobody else had the unique combination of Sound, Groove, technical ability, dynamics, power and sensibility.
He knew when to get on top and when to lay back. His drumming was more about feel than perfection.
He had that incredible right foot and don't forget about his hi-hat work and those sick fills, that are often never mentioned (overlooked).
He remains the All Around perfect drummer for rock. He could have played in a Funk band or a Metal band just the same.

I am one of the biggest fans of The Who and Keith Moon. That being said, I beg to differ with him being called 'best drummer ever'. That title belongs to Neil Peart. Neil played with absolute precision night after night, was a brilliant lyricist, played on more albums, played many more live shows, and was mostly sober throughout his career. Moon's drumming became more and more sloppy as the booze took over (1974 and after ). Keith was charming and funny for the most part but I wonder what he would have been like had he not been drunk from morning till night. Would he have been as funny?
