Thanks for joining me on another Jeep Overland Car Camping adventure. On this adventure I’m exploring the Maury Mountains in Central Oregon searching for a homestead I’ve been wanting to locate for years. Tag along for some searching for lost history, overland style car camping, camp cooking, a look at the gear I use, and to see some of the beautiful dirt roads and trails of the Oregon back country.
In this video we also locate the site of an old Civilian Conservation Carps camp. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 and aimed to help relieve unemployment by putting people to work building projects that would serve the public good.

Finally found Derrick caves, after seeing you and Yolo Overland place caches. Two trips, one down fron hwy 20 and one up Cabin Lake. Enjoyed camping out there. One comment spoke of safety...I always check up in trees, everywhere on ground, for silent critters when I lite from my 4x4. Never take anything for granted. Create my own comfort zone. Casey you were breathing pretty hard after that hike in 80 plus. Not making fun, just thinking at 78 how muck panting I would be doing. Like 99 yd TD! KUDUS

It's the ambiance in your restaurant. The meadow reminds me of Jonie Mitchels song, pull up paradise, put down a parking lot. I hope it never happens in Central Ore, 97 corridor is crowded enough.

Hot weather tip: wear a long sleeve cotton shirt. The material will absorb the perspiration and evaporation will help cool you down. Once bare skin is hot, it's hot! Also a wide brim hat. We had a lot of CCC camps in SD.

My property today. Central California. It's been now in our family since the 1860's. Three houses have been been built on the same location. An original winery. The winery foundation still survives. Pictures. The early pics we have are glass plate photography. One of the things my brother and I picked out were the Outhouses. We have dug out a couple of them recently. Bottles, cutlery, dishes... A time capsule.
I’ll have to check out that Cold Steel shovel. I’m always looking for lightweight shovels that will hold up for more than a few digs. Cheers!

Several of the early Texas State Parks were built by the CCC. I enjoy your trips. ~ from cut and Shoot, Texas
Thanks Casey, and yes I always find a good stick when I'm in snake country. Good for poking around likely spots where a snake my be so you can avoid them. That and a good idea of where snakes like to hang-out and you'll be fine.
For sure. Something I learned when I was young and have never lost the habit. I always love to pick up a good walking/snake stick when I’m going to be walking much distance. Cheers!
@@CoyoteWorks01 Tap it on the ground while you walk, poke it first into any hole or crevice before you stick your hand into it.
Tapping will actually alert them, make most of them crawl away.

Your shade trip is spot on. I always have to tell friends down here in Arizona to stop in the shade. It is so wild how many people don't think of that. Especially if they don't hike regularly... you inspired me to start my own channel documenting my hikes here.

Hey Casey! Great video, such a cool find, and good to see you again. I know you're busy with work and trying to get out for these videos to show us homesteads and settlements... but, I think you're about due for a good ol' shelter camping trip in Grandpa's truck taking time for yourself for a couple of nights and showing us the highlights along the way. The holiday's are fast approaching (Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!) so a winter getaway to reflect on the year and to look forward to the next would be pretty good timing. Well done, Casey! I grew up in Oregon and really miss the junipers and pines, and of course the sage brush. Two observations: would have liked you to linger steady with your camera on that rod with the large gear so I could 'pause and ponder' a moment. Also, at the cattle yard there was a modern wire fence you included in the scene with no explanation or question of why that was there out in this secluded location. That’s a good point. I used the word swathers but did mean mowing machine. I found a mostly intact one at another homestead one time. Pretty interesting how it worked. Cheers!

My Dad was in a CCC camp when he was about 15 or 16 H e said it taught him a lot

I’ve been doing a lot of research of the logging that took place in the Kings Canyon National Park area for my channel. When the Forest Service acquired the land in 1935 they had the CCC come in and remove all signs of the logging camps. I bet they did the same to their camps.
You could be right. I know the CCC workers did other projects in the same general area of the forest as our big railroad logging camps so it would make sense. Cheers!

I acquired a walking staff this year. Hard to admit it was a concession to aging. It would suck to take a hard tumble on walkabout. Cell reception can be spotty.

I’m not too worried about it when I’m in really remote areas. I generally would hear a rig coming long before it ever got to me. I do carry personal protection and am pretty picky about choosing a camp spot that’s hidden and out of sight from any roads that may have a vehicle.
