    I finally visited Hitsville, USA. I saw that little studio for myself and I was just so blown away! Thinking about HDH, Norman Whitfield, Smokey Robinson, Harvey Fuqua and others along with the artists, the Funk Brothers, the whole Motown shebang! What history!

    The prolific songwriting/producing team of Holland Dozier Holland! These guys were the creative geniuses of Motown. True, Gordy was the visionary but HDH songs catapulted The Supremes and The Four Tops to mega-stardom. Their music made Motown, a small independent label into a major player in the industry. Their music is timeless and sound just as great today as it did forty five years ago. They should do a movie or a documentary on these legendary GIANTS.

    • @maryruggiero2884

      yeah, but only for awhile. then when gordy fired them, he was in trouble. he had other outstanding writers, but they weren't part of his inner circle, so they never got their due at all. Ivy Hunter for example...he was the rebel, so gordy dissed him the entire time Ivy worked for him. if gordy had been half the business man people say he was, he'd have seen the potential in what Ivy did. but not, gordy would rather bite off his nose to spite his face. HDH got a bad deal in the end, but the other writers, with the exceptions of Smokey, Mickey, gordy's relatives, of course, and anyone else who kissed his butt, got a lousy deal all along. smh...Motown was awesome, but it would have been so much more under the leadership of someone whose ego and libido didn't make the decisions.

    So that's where the guitar line on "Keep me hangin' on" came from and it caught everyone's attention the very first time you heard it. The Supremes best record among many classics. I always thought if they would have produced the Supremes and Four Tops until 1970, the streak would have continued for the groups. They did have hits but not in continuation and popularity like the HDH hits. Clearly, the best pop producers of the 60's and the history of Motown (And they had many great producers in their stable.) Arguably may be the best producers of all time.

      @michellekirkendall818 3 года назад +1

      Well everyone has an opinion, and we don't necessarily like all singers. But I am finding a lot of "Diana haters" being fueled by You Tube gossip threads. Many people, with no knowledge of the early "Detroit Sound" (and most not alive in it's heyday) are the ones speaking loudest. Her romantic life is talked about due to her celebrity, and there were many men at Motown who liked her and PURSUED her. The Supremes, in my opinion, join the other wonderful female groups at Motown: Vandellas, Marvelettes, as being the best that I've heard in my lifetime.

      And, Mary Ruggiero, how old are you? Tell me, who still looks simply stunning at the age of 77, and still performing? Diana Ernestine Earle Ross! You are not going to take down an illustrious 60-year career. Now, why does she still look so good? BLACK DON'T CRACK!

LOL!! she'd do well to know her limitations...she is so used up and worn out...rode hard and put away wet. she's so starved for attention and deluded that she is still young enough to command the stage. the only reason she's anyone is because she was sleeping with the boss.
      you are ridiculous...hanging off her axx the way you do. is she paying to be her minion, or are you just that foolish? LMAO!!

    • @maryruggiero2884
      @maryruggiero2884 3 года назад

      i have been seriously studying Motown for years. i am extremely well versed on the subject. i'd like to address your comment, point by point.
      first, "gossip threads", really? that's laughable. they are threads of comments by people who don't like diane. they are, as you stated, entitled to their opinions. as are you. but just because something is your opinion, that doesn't make it true.
      second, her romantic life is talked about NOT because she's a celebrity...i haven't come across anything in my research that points to the "romantic life" of Levi Stubbs, or Martha Reeves, or most Motown figures, in fact. diane's romantic life is talked about because SHE pursued every man at Motown...they didn't pursue her. she was a status seeker and a homewrecker, and needed to be the Motown Queen, so she slept her way to berry gordy...who was foolish enough to ruin his own marriage and attach himself to diane, who was attaching herself to him. what a suck-up story. they never did get married to each other, at least.
      third, the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Velvelettes, the Andantes (especially!), were groups. diane wanted to be a godess, and you can't have others on the stage for that to happen. she went solo with modest success at best. and compared to the other female artists at Motown, she was mediocre. Kim Weston, Brenda Holloway, Hattie Littles, Syreeta, Chris Clark (another of berry gordy's "special" artists), Bettye Lavette, etc...were all better singers than diane...but no one was as obnoxious and agressive and ill-bred as she, so she got ahead.
      Michelle, this is all about research. i assume you are familiar with the inner workings at Motown, and the great number of books that have been written on the subject. i like the ones written by the lesser known Motown people. you compare and contrast what you read, along with other articles and data that you find, conversations you've had with first hand witnesses, and you make conclusions based on that research. i could only come to the conclusion that diane was needy and unprincipled, without morals or values. she didn't care who she hurt, as long as she got what she wanted. very sad that she is still that way today at the age of 77 when she should cultivate a little dignity.
      i'm not a "Diana hater", i just know the truth, and yes, she makes me kind of sick because she's not my kind of human being.

    • @michellekirkendall818
      @michellekirkendall818 3 года назад

      @@maryruggiero2884 I also have read books on the subject; "Berry, Motown and Me" Raynoma Gordy Singleton, Mary Wilson's " Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme", Diana's book from 1993 (her observations are interesting as well) the latest from 2019; "Come And Get These Memories" Eddie and Brian Holland; "How Sweet It Is" by Lamont Dozier. Yes, there were many talented singers at Motown; Kim Weston, Carolyn Crawford, Mary Wells, Florence Ballard, and my childhood favorite, Martha Reeves. As with any company, or corporation, there are contractual disputes, jealousies, etc. Also, Motown being an independent, black owned company, he had to hire people to get the airplay for his many artists. Some artists didn't suffer because of "Diane" but because of racism and segregation. And, you, like many others, are going by what you read, whether it's true or not. In Eddie and Brian Holland's book, Brian is the only person who speaks highly of Miss Ross. After twenty years at Motown Records, RCA offered Diana 20 million...she asked Gordy if Motown could match it...he couldn't. Her Motown contract would have paid her only 250,000.00 for 20 years of enriching Motown Records. Again, racism and segregation played a big part in promotion and airplay. WLS and WCFL in Chicago did not play early Motown music. This internet has produced many "Diana haters," those who weren't born when the music was made, and have no knowledge of the company's beginnings.
