I really like my BMW map for going places I’m not familiar with. I find I miss less exits and and love how it helps to make sure you’re in the correct lane for your travel.
Waze has saved my butt many times. I'm gonna disagree with you on Google being the best for accuracy, as I've had quite a few errors and been taken off main roads onto farm trails a couple times. Love the BMW maps, I just wish it had the alerts that Waze has.
Probably depends on the area we're comparing. Yes the alerts are crucial, you could maybe have the map setup on the instrument cluster and have waze running on the center screen to get the best of both worlds!
Another advantage of built in BMW nav is that it uses the camera for detection which lane you are driving, and if need to go to another lane an animated arrow is shown in the lane indicator
I was a diehard Google Maps in my previous non-BMW vehicles but now absolutely love the BMW nav. I travel out of my home area frequently and it’s been stellar. I keep music on the main screen and rely on the HUD for directions. I’d say I’ve only had to pull out Google Maps once or twice.
Great video, thank you. I used BMW maps (they are in partnership with TomTom) for many years, and find them the best for navigation, Plus they work in long tunnels - it knows the speed you travel shows the exact position without GPS signal. . Most don't know but the gear box of BMWs uses maps to help selecting right gears too. They don't scream and shout about all the great and advance stuff as many others, just get the s*** done.
Super cool stuff! Great perks that I should've mentioned, also for EVs the BMW map can let you know where you could stop to charge the vehicle as well. But the fact that the map works with the gears is interesting stuff.
Great video, I would really like to see a video about your preferred driving setup with all of the screens, climate, comfort, and the Waze automation. Keep up the great videos!
Wa e defaults to the quickest route which varies depending on traffic. You can actually pick which route you want as it gives you around 3 different routes to pick from.
BMW maps is really good in foreign countries, such as merging into a 5 lane highway and getting all the way across the other side to exit onto another highway with less than two minutes to accomplish this
Apple Maps has come a long way but they're almost perpetually fighting that decade or more head start Google and others got on them. The best thing Apple Maps has going for it depends on how invested you are into Apple's other apps. Like being able to quickly pull up a doctor appointment on your calendar to start navigation.
Will do, i'll try to make this a youtube short so it's easier to figure out. But, it's done through the shortcuts automation app on the iphones. On the bottom, 2nd tab (automation) click on that. Then you want to setup a function that works as "When Carplay Connects, (Do) Launch App (Waze)" Best thing ever!
I have to disagree with your rating of BMW Maps… Yes it is not always as accurate as Google Maps, (I use Google Maps if I am having location issues with BMW Maps, but only then) BMW Maps is definitely my number 1, as I particularly love the Heads-Up display. I do not find it distracting while driving. The detail map only pops up just before you need to make a turn and is very accurate and helpful, especially when you are approaching a complicated intersection, with multiple roads converging. As it is right in front of me I can easily navigate through busy traffic or odd intersections without taking my eyes off the road. For me, BMW Maps is number 1, but not perfect…
You can set up the mic on the steering wheel for Siri or Google, So if you push long on the mic Siri will open and you can ask to navigate with Waze,Google or any app you want
I’m 70 and use WAZE always. My kids all use google maps. I always arrive to the destination before them. And not just by a minute or two. I’ve arrived 20 minutes to an hour before them depending on the distance.
Thanks for the input, might depend on where you live. I'm near the Boston area in the USA and have found google maps to be the most reliable and consistent, I would still say Waze is the fastest but I do see myself taking a ton of back roads in order to get there.
Thanks for your very detailed review. One question please : what about gps feature regarding chagring station. Basically we might use BMW gps who can Better manage battery system and indicate to us when and where we havé to recharge. What is your input on that ? Thanks
Google map shows on my instrument cluster just like BMW map. Biggest con is that any map other than BMW is not adaptive to your drive. I have BMW X5 XDrive 50e and I have to use BMW map in the car so I get adaptive drive for e.g. it changes to electric when in the city and gas when on the highway to get best mileage. If I switch to Google map, it will use entire electricity first and then switch completely on gas. Its awful
I've seen google map show up for android users not carplay, unless I did something wrong. I wasn't aware of the fact that the vehicle could change things up like that for hybrid functions w/ using the bmw maps, super cool!!

Never used ABRP! We'll have to test that one out, thanks for mentioning it. Great points mentioned as well. Loving the new car, it's only been about a month and I already got more than 2000 miles on it =)

Hey BeamerView 🙌 Is there a way to run both internal BMW nav and Apple Maps together? Here's my problem... I want to use the internal nav so that my car runs in auto e-mode. However, I also need to share my ETA through Apple Maps. When I try to run them together, one cancels the other.... I know I could disable CarPlay, but then I wouldn't be able to listen to music or receive messages through CarPlay. I can't seem to find the answer on any forum... Please help 🙌 and thank you for your videos!!
Thanks! I believe you can, it was tricky but I think if you turn on the apple maps first and then the BMW one both should remain on, might be vice versa.
I like the BMW app because of the integration with my X5. However when I get to the destination I can't trust the last turn to the destination. More often than not it tells me to turn in the wrong direction. Another issue is it's not up to date. It couldn't find a street I was trying to get to in Pensacola on a road trip last Spring. I used Goggle maps to get there.
Hopefully BMW will update their software so Google Maps can run on the gauge cluster. I have a 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge for my commuter car and both Apple Maps and Google Maps show up on the gauge cluster area. It actually took an update from Volvo for the Apple Maps to show up there while the Google Maps showed up there for over a year now

I would love to just go from point A to point B and see the hazards and speed traps etc. Edit: and for me the design of a Apple Maps is more usable then google or Waze
Apple maps shows in the heads up display. When programs take you on detours its due to heavy traffic.Programs cannot anticipate changes or extra delays due to traffic light cycles. Clarify running Waze in the background for alerts thru carplay and other programs on top.
How accurate is google maps with its speed trap alerts? Cause if it approaches Waze levels of accuracy, then there’s no reason for me to use Waze anymore
Not as good as Waze, but, I do imagine google maps will catch up to it. I have a feeling since Google owns waze as well that it'll get as good as waze and waze will become obsolete.
I am living in Flanders (Belgium). Here the BMW-GPS-system fails (my BMW X1 was delivered mid October 2023). Though we are Dutch-speaking the instructions for highway numbers is sometimes given in French and some road numbers are given in German (Belgium has these 3 official languages !). BMW Belgium has been noticed several times but cannot (or does not want) to solve the problem ! It is a real shame for a company like BMW ! 😤🙄

You have to change the content screen to a different one such as "Map" For your vehicle I believe if you click on the hamburger button on the steering wheel near the multimedia controls, you want to click on that and select the MAP content screen. Then when you begin and enter a navigation and go, it should show on that center screen.
You can but you have to run BMW map on your HU or instrument cluster and have Waze run though your Apple CarPlay on your main screen (above climate control)

It all looks good and interactive but I think BMW has based their idrive9 navigation systems on UK maps from WW2 when we moved road signs to confuse the enemy!
I have mentioned my frustration to my BMW salesman who agrees with me and told me he normally uses WAZE.
Unbelievable - spend £50k on a car today yet I had better navigation guidance 15 years ago with a £50 Garmin!
