There a number of polymer mixtures used for the face seal. As I recall it, silicone was less subject to degradation than other soft seals aka elastomers. Silicone certainly forms more tightly to the face than just plain old rubber and is likely better than what is used in cheaper respirators. Further some people react to latex rubber but not nitrile or silicone.
Thinking about it, but I can't find the diameter of the pores in the particle filters anywhere. I want to know if virusses could slip in between the micro pores or not.
@@frederikclaeyssens9201 the virus itself can fit through the particulate filter, but since it piggy backs off saliva particles/mucus from coughing, sneezing that would get caught, I doubt any viral particulates would get through. Tbh this is pretty overkill for a viral outbreak. You dont need a full NBC filter for filtering viral particles. A 40mm p100 filter is more than enough
I just recommend a lv 3 half face mask, anything past that is overkill but really it's mostly just common sense, washing your hands, not rubbing your eyes (that's how most people wearing protection get infected is by rubbing their eyes or touching their suits) and keeping hand sanitizer on you
I do own the SGE400BB, the butyl rubber version, for a few years now (7-8 years). Never used it in other environment than CS/CN gas. It worked flawlessly. I've been training with it while doing running and shooting drills. It sits tight on my face. Side note though, you better use a red dot/holographic sight on your rifle when using this mask as it's kinda hard to have a good sight picture and nice cheek weld on your rifle buttstock while wearing this polycarbonate mask. I've been using the CF C4 gas mask before for training and combat drills and it was easier to have a better cheek weld on my C8 for shooting but peripheral vision was way better on the Mestel than on the CF C4 mask's which only have two lenses... Nice review of the SGE400. 👍
To be fair the C4 is a much better mask as it might not be NIOSH approved but it’s a legit military mask, the SGE masks all failed NIOSH standards, this is why preppers talk them up and you never see government agencies using them
the only thing I can suggest or add to this if it isn't already here is to use Vaseline to create a good seal around your face especially if you have a beard. Don't be cheap with it either
Gregory K. Silicone more likely. Natural rubbers yes, synthetic rubbers no. More people are likely familiar with diving masks, where there’s usually a skirt of synthetic rubber or silicone elastomer to support the frame and lenses and create a watertight seal. For Silicone, most people wouldn't know what silicone liquid or grease was, let alone where to find the stuff _(diving supplies)._
If it's very short facial hair, it still works. Above 5mm hair length though I wouldn't recommend. But 3-5 day facial hair it's fine, I've tested it with a Avon FM-12. But remember that every masks are different, some may seal very good, the sizing matters too, how you tighten the straps, the state of the seals and so on. It's recommended to go clean shaven or at most a mustache, but personally I'm not a fan of it since it creates micro cuts/irritations in the skin which let's bacteria and shit go in and create infected pimples as a result. Trimmed as short as possible is what I prefer, better for skin hygiene. Especially since our skins already produce sebum oil which is a natural protector against various nasty things. Shaving clean everyday is really bad.
I might be able to buy batteries, bottled water, gas, ammo, food, and other disaster supplies for a day or two after a SHTF event, but a gas mask is one of those preps that will become 100% unavailable within 2 seconds of an event which requires respiratory protection. Anyone that can fit these in their prepping budget should get one sooner rather than later.
@@Nxt25 LOL ancient? Not really, the one I got (polish MP5, best one IMO $25.99) were used up until a few years ago. Also they actually were tested for asbestos and none was found. Either way they take NATO filters, you act like you cant jus buy a new filter.
I used something like this in the army and also at work later in oil and gas industrie. Same filters, masks were an older model. works good. Needs an introduction for how to safely change filters. For real safety you need the full body condom, of course. With built in toilet. You just get problems with mold after one or two days.
@@sextuspompeius1266 You mean the filter mask? I think it was from Dräger. I know the filter were. german army and later Wintershall for refinery and oil production. Same producer.
Nate, here are my questions: 1. Are you selling potassium iodide? 2. Does the SGE 150 take the 40 mm filters? 3. The SGE 400/3 comes in 2 sizes on your website, medium and large. Is there guidance as to the sizes? Many thanks! Great video as always.
Not currently selling PI but soon, the SGE takes the same filters yes, there is a sizing info in this PDF on page 22. www.mestelsafety.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Protection-Equipment.pdf The only actual difference in sizing is the amount of silicone/ rubber material, the visor is the same size. The large has more, its the one I use and I think I have an average male sized head
Huge respect for you acknowledging the fact that gas masks are designed to complete missions or to escape and not to survive, as per their limited amount reactive materials in said filters only last so long. These masks look to be top quality too. Do they have light weight particle filters too, because they would be handy for fire smoke? Also I didn't see any of the Potassium Iodide tablets on your website...?
dont know who's reading this, but for future reference, if you are going test a gas mask, do not use a vapor, (like a road flare) in a confined space, i saw a guy do this in a tent, and while it is hazardous, which this video addressed, it poorly represents the qualities of a respirator, using an aerosol spray in a confined space is better, because you can smell and feel the spray going into the mask, so to test it, use your hand to test the hermetic seal, then use a fragrant object, like vanilla extract, then test the overall mask by going into a confined space, and using some sort of air freshener or aerosol spray, I've even seen this done with a pack of ciggarettes
Great, when are we going to see something on CBRN for K9's (Dogs) as I have been looking at options here to protect man's best friend? Big market for anyone who wants to tap into the sales from dog owners?
I do love the filter canister design as it less subject to rain what is used on most industrial respirators as filter cartridges. If the canisters cover the range of industrial chemicals, suspect I am in. A HEPA filter is pretty important as practical measure.
THE RECENT CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES have illustrated a very serious threat : long term smoke & ash contamination of the air. While the fires were limited to relatively small areas, the smoke extended to major metro areas like San Francisco. Most city dwellers had NO protection, and were forced to improvise with "painter's masks", bandanas, or just stay indoors. In a severe SHTF scenario (nuclear attack, large volcanic eruption, etc.), we can assume the air could be contaminated for weeks or months.
Do agree Mary. Smoke from wildfires is an increasing issue, and as you point masks are not available, or surg masks are inefficient. AS late summer in England, from a moor (viral pic of the lady wearing a russian GP5), Moscow a few years ago, each year India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand. And California, Portugal, Greece.
@@anitaleroy9442 Can you imagine the amount of smoke & ash in the air, if these fires were NOT fought & extinguished / contained ? Back in 1998, here in Florida we had the "Ocala National Forest firestorm" that burned thousands of acres and wasn't contained for over a month. It was visible from the International Spce Station !
Well aware, I am highly concerned by this recurrent pollution, wide spread and spreading. As instance I have shared with people in Borneo. the wildfire smoke, inside Borneo the girl there said it was "as hell" during 2 months. Very high unhealthy dense smoke at any time during 8 weeks. As dense fog, but choking and stinging eyes, throat, chest@@marytica123

I have several adult size, but still need a few for kids. The 3M 7800 is great. Buy more filters than you think you'll need. They go bad quickly under use. Imagine having to walk for hours through whatever contamination. Practice changing out filters solo.
Put the mask in an air-tight mylar bag with some BHT and it will likely last the next 200 years. The BHT will sublimate and coat and even infiltrate the polymers and do its antioxidant thing.
Prefer the Avon FM50 MASK. Wide view, drinking tube, voice module and two filters. You can change out filters one at a time without taking mask off, and interchangeable outer lense covers.
I have this mask for more than 20 years now, used it for working underwater. It is a great product and its money worth. The only weak point is the plastic ring framing the mask and holding the straps, which seems to become somewhat brittle over time. Mine broke eventually. Please handle with care as if it were a piece of medical equipment. Best is not leaving it in the bag that's coming with it, instead, store it in a sturdy container (dry and away from sunlight), so the strap attachments can't get crushed. And keep the tools separate, so they don't scratch or pierce anything. If you choose this mask, be aware that the curvature of the clear plastic causes a distortion of your peripheral vision. You get used to it by turning your head, but some don't like it.
@@lordvalen8133 I heard the mask is good but the problems are that it's rather bulky and the filters are used only for the mask, so you can't put nato filters on it, you can make it a 40mm mask but you know that kinda stuff is rather daring and risky Also they are expensive as hell

Speaking from experience wearing a gas mask for even a few hours sucks. Especially if you're in a hot, humid environment. You don't want to do it. The masks I've worn were supposedly fog resistant but still, hot and humid they got foggy relatively quickly. I can't imagine how much it would've sucked for 6 days straight.
I could have missed it so my apologizes if I did, but it seems to be more of the norm not to discuss filter life when masks are reviewed or the suggestion to what filter life is about. Understanding you can't cover every situation but many people do not know that once you start using the filter, and depending on the environment, they do not last days but hours. IMO, stocking up on filters is as costly as stocking up on freeze dried food LOL. Great review(s) on this mask and masks in general. Thanks for you efforts in educating us all.
Personally I’ll be getting a CM-7M because it has sweat drainage and better for shooting but when it comes down to the nitty gritty a gas mask will always hinder your aim so it is essential to practice with it when you go to the shooting range.

One thing to know is, all filters are not rated for chlorine or ammonia. If you live close to a plant that uses these, if an accident happened the gas/vapor could cover a very large area. Not a pleasant way to die.
I believe this is a good question... what about gas masks that are compatible with eyeglasses. I could rig it up to work with some duck tape, but this is a serious concern if the time ever comes I need to use one. Dont want to have the duck tape saturated with sweat and failing in the middle of a hurried escape or what have you

Hello my friend, I noted where you talked about mustard gas in here. They (Mestel) claim that the SGE 400/3 B is mustard gas proof for a matter of hours. The face gasket is a Butyl rubber rather than silicone and therefore will stand up to mustard better. I agree with you that the chance of mustard attack is very slim, but I bought it anyway. That said the mask alone will not help against mustard, one needs the whole hood and suit as your skin would burn so bad you couldnt stand it. I haven't messed around with gas masks since being in the military back in late 1979-80. Back then we utilized the M17. Filter elements were secured inside the "cheeks". But in order to change them out, you had to remove the mask..That could pose serious risk if the environment was still effected by CBR contamination. Was a very dependable mask in it's day though. But I don't know anything about modern ones..

@@frederikclaeyssens9201 I read that a N95 mask can filter out corona. I assume these masks are at least that lv.
To be fair the C4 is a much better mask as it might not be NIOSH approved but it’s a legit military mask, the SGE masks all failed NIOSH standards, this is why preppers talk them up and you never see government agencies using them
@@TFU774 The Airboss C4 and the MSA's and are still the best choice for me too. Depends on what kind of environnement you get yourself into. 😉👍
Got the old DREO C4 but I can imagine the Airboss ones being really good considering they make the LBM(C5) and yeah they both would outperform the SGE
Agree - not in use in most part of the world @@TFU774
Any gas mask that isn't falling apart will work with cs gas
the only thing I can suggest or add to this if it isn't already here is to use Vaseline to create a good seal around your face especially if you have a beard.
Don't be cheap with it either
Sorry my man, if you have a beard no amount of vaseline will give you a good seal!
Vaseline degrades silicon or latex products.
Don't forget to tell the cool kids that it won't work with a beard !! ... Don't mind my picture.. I shaved my beard off ..
Vaseline
@@-John-Doe- nope Vaseline will degrade all rubbers. Just water and clean shaved I was in the US army, this is the only way they work.
@@gregoryk.9815 yea but in shtf how long u need the mask? It kinda depends
Excellent review. Fantastic and compact in attitude and depiction. Thank You Sir.

Yes, but dont buy this one. There are better stuff that you can spend 250$ on. Just go and buy like a GP8 or a FM12. Dont buy this, its crap
Budk.com has polish,Russian, and Czech milsurp gas masks for $12.99-$24.99
@@ChiTownGuerrilla That cold-war ancient stuff has asbestos in the filters. I would hasitate to use it even if my life depended on it.

Research before you make claims. Nobody but a clueless derelict is going to be using a 1960's USSR charcoal filter.
I used something like this in the army and also at work later in oil and gas industrie. Same filters, masks were an older model. works good. Needs an introduction for how to safely change filters.
For real safety you need the full body condom, of course. With built in toilet. You just get problems with mold after one or two days.

Nate, here are my questions:
The fact that you don't have millions of subs shows how fucked we are. I love you man. Thank you for all you do.
I prefer pepper spray
These prices r outrageous

I do love the filter canister design as it less subject to rain what is used on most industrial respirators as filter cartridges.
If the canisters cover the range of industrial chemicals, suspect I am in. A HEPA filter is pretty important as practical measure.
For Mustard Gas Protection you need the Mestel SGE 400/3 BB model
All this is the weak point of the Estel - a gasmask after a dving mask !!

The new M50's filters can be swapped in a contaminated area.
