  • Edit: *A bunch of people seem to have misunderstood my comments on tape. When I said tapes were not exactly an audiophile format, I was speaking about cassette tape, not quarter inch or reel to reel tapes used for professional recording. I am all about analog recordings.
    This video has jumped from 3k to 42k views in like 3 weeks. Since there's a wider audience of people interacting here, I just want to remind everyone to treat each other with respect. We're all here to talk about what we love and enjoy; music and audio. Those of you who come here to pick fights or spew insults will be blocked.

    A Note from 2022:
    Wow, so this video from 6 years ago is still the most watched video on my channel. A bit of an update on this system. As is the case with most audio enthusiasts, they go through gear quickly. I don't own anything shown in this video anymore. The turntable and electronics are long gone. The speakers were traded/gifted to my family to use in the living room of their house (I live in an apartment and floorstanders are just not a realistic option). I tend to do a system update video about once a year, if you're interested in what I'm currently using to listen to music, you can check out those more recent videos. Cheers everyone!

    I am quite proud of you, the video is well done, your explanation is even better and you conveyed the primary reason why home audio is important, which isn't about just the equipment, but about the music. It is excellent that there are young guys like you that will carry the torch forward for the older guys like me and continue this great hobby forward. There are two types of listeners, regular stereo (hi-fi) and headphone listeners (head-fi) and you covered both and I own both. "GREAT JOB" young man, "GREAT JOB!!!" indeed your parents should be proud.

      As a 27 year old I enjoyed this video as well, basically no one I know around my age is into hifi, but they do always enjoy my system when they hear it lol. I'm trying to carry the torch, taking some EE courses and build audio amps in my free time, including solid state and tube gear. Most of my friends never even seen a tube till I showed them, they were amazed.

      Great to see young people with a stereo hifi setup enjoying the great quality sound it can have. I'm in my 40's and have always had a larger 2ch hifi stereo throughout my life. I work with some young people that are just out of school and starting their careers and all of them say they can not afford a hifi set up. I direct them to do some research and buy some used hifi. Even just a decent sound card with DAC on a computer running to a proper amplifier and a decent set of bookshelf speakers setup correctly will be so much better than a small Bluetooth speaker to play audio files. You can get excellent older equipment used at a fraction of the cost of new hifi and it sounds great.

    Great presentation. Needless to say, you've quite an impressive system there. I particularly liked what you said at the end - that a good system is one that draws you into the music, that gets you involved in an emotional way, regardless of the price. How true, because you don't need a mega-buck hi-fi to experience this.

    I've had the Dynaudio Contour T2.5 speakers. Your description of the Dynaudio house sound is spot on. Their highs where a bit too laid back for my taste. I've replaced them with Magnepan speakers and i'm still blown away by the immense soundstage and the difference in detail, while still being very very musical. I drive them with an Ayre AX-7E amp, use a Cayin PS2 tube phono preamp and a Denon DP-57L turntable. Great video!

      @poetryonplastic  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I think if I were only listening to classical and jazz, then I would probably love Magnepans, but I was a little disappointed the one time I got to demo them and put on some heavier music. I know tons of people swear by them, but they were just never my cup of tea.

What stands out is your grasp of the English language, audio language and combination of both-that is a skill that few have the ability to maintain and express. You also answered the question so often left on the table-why should I care? All in all a very fine tape.

    Spotted U.N. “The Next Four Years” on the shelf at 5:39. Good man. Good, good man. Oh yea the other stuff was cool too lol! Would like to hear more about headphone amps and dacs from you. I’ve been scrolling through RUclips videos for audio and stereo review. This is the first video I actually watched from start to finish. Well done. Especially considering the taste in music is similar to mine, and to hear feedback on improving sound quality on a Pageninetynine tape or Dischord that was partied on super hard from ‘88, is really valuable to me. So, much appreciated.

      Hey thanks, it's nice to find people into post-hardcore and screamo on the youtube vinyl community. I don't know much about cassette tapes, I only have about 15 or so. Generally they are the cheapest way for bands to put out physical music because they can be ordered in very small batches and done using second hand machines DIY style. There's a lot of people who are very into tapes over on websites like audiokarma and the steve hoffman forums, my first instinct is to send you there. I do know cassette tapes tend to degrade generally through no fault of the user, especially depending on the materials used, but again I am not an expert on this area of audio. But yeah if you have questions about amps and DACs fire away. I will say for people looking to start their audio journey with head-fi, I usually point them to Schiit Audio or the Audioquest usb-DACs. Great ways to get stellar sound on a limited budget.

    Excellent video and explanation of why throughout. Nicely done. The draw you into the music comment is key as there are great systems at several price points. You might explore some diffusion behind the speakers and play with toe in as this is a logical step that few audiophiles ever get to and it is really a large part of the end to end performance in a given room. Keep the passion.

    My brother worked for Dynaudio up until late 2017. He was a manager in one of their R&D cells, I’m pretty sure it was car audio tho, it’s what they use in the Bugatti veyron I think. I’ll check when I see him. He only left as his wife got homesick and wanted to move back to Australia. He said it was the best company he had ever worked for, which was quite rude as he used to work for me 😊

    Nice hifi setup. Having an audio room is becoming a lost home layout with the new generations of people settling for much smaller and cheaper options that can be shoved in a the corner of a room or under the tv. A properly setup audio room is such a great place to go and listen to a entire album in a calm relaxing and quality environment.

    Excellent overview and well-done presentation! Since you're already dipping your toe into the world of tube amplification with the Woo Audio WA6, I'd suggest getting a tube amp & preamp for your main rig. I'm also a big fan of moving coil carts: you might want to check out a low output MC cart (Hana EL or even the fairly affordable Denon DL103) though you'd need to get a step up transformer as well for LOMCs.) There is something about the signal when stepped up through an SUT that will blow you away-the detail even gets bigger and more dynamic (in my experience). Lastly, check out horn-loaded speakers, Like Klipsch or Altec (if you go vintage). Since you are a big believer in an all-analog/all-tube recording & mastering chain for LPs, continuing that chain with similar audio playback systems that would've been in use at the time presents an opportunity to "hear the music as they heard it". Again, only my opinion, but there's a certain kind of honesty and authenticity in that process that I think is worthwhile. Good luck!

      I've contemplated room treatments for years, but there hasn't really been much bloom or distortion with this placement so I haven't seen much need. The carpet absorbs a lot of refraction, I usually keep the window blinds (that are wood) down when listening, it really seems to work ok. I honestly am looking more towards better turntable isolation.

    Hello, because of your video and eclectic taste in music that is similar to mine in many ways (Nation of Ulysses! No "audiophiles" hardly know that band!) I started to keep an eye out for a new set of speakers. I currently had Klipsch Cornwalls set up. I came across a pair of Focus 340's at an astonishing price and had to go check them out. I've had them now just over a few days and they have taken anything I've thrown at them so well. I really love them! Whether its Spacemen 3, NEU!, Discharge, Velvets, Stooges or Coltrane, these speakers have the magic for what I'm into. Thanks for giving them such a informative description, it really made me curious to look into them and I got mine for an absolute steal compared to what they sell for used. Still wasn't cheap by any means but well worth my investment. So stoked to listen to them.

    You should not be able to plug a USB on the back of the Marantz CD6004 CD-player as it should not have one. It has one on the front but that is only for iPod and iPhone playback.
    Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    That's a awsome system. I recommend Dual Turntables if you ever go vintage. I own a Dual 1218 from 1972 and I couldn't ask for more. Dual's are German.

      I started out in this hobby with vintage tables, there are some great tables from the 70s out there. I never owned a Dual, but I know a lot of people swear by them (usually as a less costly alternative to Thorens).

    Made in china doesn't automatically mean bad quality the quality of a product comes from it's design. A product can be made with all the love and passion in the world if it isn't designed properly it'll still be crap

      The problem with chinese manufacturing is that they will change your design without telling you if they think they're going to go over budget, or they make emergency changes on the floor itself if something isn't "working out", also without telling you. No company has ever moved manufacturing to offshore without a pretty big quality hit. Not even one time.

    • @thunderpooch
      @thunderpooch 6 лет назад +3

      Mostly true, not always.
      Bigger companies have floor managers that oversee the production and crack heads if they try to cut corners.
      But often times, these very companies which are bigger are always seeking to cut corners themselves because they treat their product like a commodity.
      It's a balancing act.
      When in doubt and you demand perfection at 3 times the cost, then of course go with domestic manufacturing near the design headquarters.

      Consistency is typically a reason why some mfg. stay away from going to factories in China. It all depends on the mfg. processes that are deployed at what factory is chosen to perform the work. Some companies have had great experiences and some not. Some companies are simply unwilling to take the chances as they feel it might hurt the brand.

    I used to have that Mcintosh setup, it's the most finicky pre amp and amp setup i ever owned. I was glad it was gone the only speaker that sounded okay was my Magnepan MG1

    Impressive system, but I like the way to wrapped it yup with the end comments about appreciating the art! That sometimes gets lost when folks are just looking to get the coolest gear!

    Upgraded the interlink between the preamp and poweramp yet? I always thought it would be a minor upgrade, but since i've upgraded to Pink Faun (Dutch audio brand) the whole Odyssey set sounds a lot better. Awesome setup!! I've had Dynaudio Contour 2.5 speakers before. Great speakers, but i've since swapped them for Magnepan speakers. Nice to see another young audio / music lover like me (i don't like the term audiophile...i just connect that with older men)

    Mcintosh is a great company. They will sell you parts to a 30year old model at reasonable price. No other company that I know of has such a depth of support for their entire product line.

    I owned an Aries Scout (gen 1, with acrylic platter), then an Aries 2 w/12" JMW arm, and now a Prime w/10.5 JMW arms (plastic and metal). In some ways the lowly Scout was my favorite, and I've seriously thought about going back to one. A used Scout is always my recommendation for someone looking for a deck in the 1k range.
    Also, I bought an SDS speed control when I had the Scout, and it made a HUGE difference in sound quality! So much more focused and locked in! Not subtle, "my wife could hear it from the next room" etc. etc. (-: I've kept mine through all my deck 'upgrades'. Highly recommended, only available used, do NOT buy an ADS. Or buy a used Eagle/Roadrunner, if you can find one. Okay, carry on.

    Great video. I like seeing someone else use a diagonal setup for their speakers. The diagonal configuration eliminates, or at least mitigates, many room acoustic problems. Question: what is the size of this room?

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  5 лет назад

      To be honest I don't remember, but the diagonal placement was due to the opposing walls being very oddly shaped. This setup is in a large room in a new house now (see my more recent setup video).

    Thanks for the GREAT info! Question: at around 3:35, you say "McIntosh amps don't give alot up like some other warmer amps might". Can you elaborate on that a bit; what does that mean exactly?

  • @culturefan

    Yeah, do one on classical music. Also how about one on avant-garde music? I've been thinking of tackling this one myself in maybe a 2 or 3 part series ie. history, what was your introduction to that genre, avant in other genres, etc.
