- The Proton X70 is now over four years old, but is it still a good buy over a Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5? And what about the new 1.5L three-cylinder engine, is it better or worse than the old 1.8? 2018 X70 owner Hafriz Shah gives his verdict in this full review.

Sold my 5 years old CX5. Been navigating across the city to find a replacement. Tried out crv, xtrail , hrv. , Peugeot. Never visited Proton . Saw one in a shopping mall. The salesperson arranged a test drive. Two days later I got behind the wheel of an x70. The moment the moved I was speechless. I had to admit that this drove better than its competitors. Price wise...I save a lot. Got mine after a week. Yup Hafiz you are right. Mr. Bobby Ang you are right too. Love this car.
i love how bobby explain that user of x70 may find very difficult to see an upgrade when they change to a new car price higher than x70
1.5 or 1.8
If anyone is still sitting on the fence, i can tell you that as a 3 year user of the X70 Premium, i am very satisfied with the car. The interior is so high quality, that the nappa leather still looks like new after 3 years of driving with kids and monthly interstate business trips.
The only barrier that is holding people back is that it is a Proton. As a businessman myself, I don't find it embarrassing at all driving this car to posh events, as a matter of fact some of my rich friends have an X70 as their 2nd car.
How's the issue regarding the parts etc that being mentioned by the Netizens? Are those issue true or otherwise?
Your reviews are great, very insightful, kudos for making these
can you believe it this x70 is now four years old it's still looking elegant even is quite ageing but it looks good with the 2022 refresh update
thanks to china, +++social credit
@@adamafifrowigmailcom you still believe this bullshit western propaganda
impressive review as always, just a suggestion, maybe can do kind of vlog review involving 2 reviewers (eg hafruz and eu jin) where you can exchange ideas and suggestions
Impressive enhancements and performance stats for the new X70 1.5L!!
Got the the early premium cbu. Got my money’s worth. Only complaint is the sometimes jerking gearbox on full stop starting and hill climbs. Been insisting to change the gearbox as it’s still under warranty but proton is very reluctant and has been servicing/repairing everything else to “fix” the jerking
Side note. Did u guys use a new video camera for the interior/drive talk? It's sharper and better in many ways.
Hi En. Hafriz, l just watch your review again today and can you advise me whether to buy the X70 AWD standard or just 2WD? Is it worthwhile to buy AWD . Thanks
Hafriz any possibility there will be a replacement or facelifted X70? Looking to pick one up in 2023. Thanks.
1.5 TGDI HP and torque no issue with it. Loved driving it .
Just wish they can do better with exterior cosmetics. Update on grill, bumper design will do...
Instead, just the new gloss black we got 😔
Wow amazing! If something spoil i can take lrt while paying installments for 1 year am i right?
Totally agree about the sound system and sun roof. My old 2008 Persona sound better and sunroofs in Malaysia is just, to me, pure poyo-ness, more weight at the wrong place. The X70 is a good package. Almost bought the mid spec 1.5 to replace my 2017 persona towards the end of the SST exemption period but the 4 month waiting period killed that idea.
You should consider it now at EON outlets this weekend; interest rate is below 1.7% via Maybank! And no waiting list at all.... offer at EON branches this weekend.
@@mahmoodrazakbahman hey, appreciate the heads-up. Thanks.
4 month waiting isn't that bad, there many people had to wait for 6 months up to a year
How about the Mazda CX5 comparing to this? I know the high spec of the 2.0 litre is 150k+. But which one would be the pick?
can you please elaborate the long term use of proton x70 specialy long term quality of this 3 cylinder engine.. will truly appreciate explanation..thanks
How is your CBU X70? Ours are juddering like crazy even after a torque converter replacement. It would require a check on the valve body, which means dropping the gearbox, WHICH also means we have to pay the oil for it again out of our pocket. It's awful tbh.
I have to disagree with handling. I'm very aggressive. The X70 MC2 still handles amazingly at corners even at high speeds. I know I shouldn't, but its just THAT good. Proton's Ride and Handling is in its own class.
Love the new rims, but seriously it is in need of a proper facelift after 4 years. You can't just MC (minor change) your way for 10 years, surely...
Hi, Any news regarding Proton X90?
yes...comfort for long journey if it is not in trafic jem...lack of stop n go function really pain for my right leg. the seat not sopportive enough for my thigh. due to that, already sold my premium x70 to get other model. But if x70 feature upgraded to be the same as x50 flagship (stop n go function), this still number one choice for me.
Looks like an proton ads to me as you keep highlighting the pros and conveniently neglect the cons. The 1.5L 3cylinder will run out of breath on higher speed for sure. Maybe engine mounting will fail faster than the 4 cylinder one but we shall see.
Agree with you 💯 👍
To all owners, how is the fuel consumption on this 1.5T? Any actual figure instead of the one on paper?
Happy new year Hafiz. Good review tho I still think the x50 looks much better😂
If it's not broken, don't fix it. That's how I look at this car design. There is no need for a major redesign. It is as beautiful as it is. The black trim and this colour is my favourite. If I ever consider an SUV, this should be on the top of my list. And I do agree that the infotainment needs a major update. At this price range, you can get other cars with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.
if you have a look at the newest geely boyue, you'd think differently. By today's standard this car is lacking some essential features. the design works in 2018, but today it looks old and boxy. if you're gonna pay 120k don't you want the latest and greatest your money can get? the 3 cylinder engine is not even used anymore in china, it's not reliable, not economic, and not smooth at all in drive
@@InnerFire6213 bruh, u didnt watch the full video right🍃🍃
if Geely import the xingyue L to Proton, you will find that suv is All-round transcendence than crv
Is this new 1.5T engine actually the exact same engine as x50 ?
Reupload?
So why no auto parking apa like on x50 to the bigger x70 now ?
Do you mean the engine is made in Malaysia or is assembled in Malaysia?
Can you review the new Proton X70 1.5 Premium X? It’s the limited edition Proton I think.
Can’t believe proton didn’t change anything design wise 🤦🏻♂️ I remember back in 2018. they keep on saying that they’ll eventually change the design on coming years but 4 years has pasaed by still nothing
Please don't say sunroofs are wasteful in Malaysian weather. There are many sunroofs lovers in Malaysia, infact car makers in Malaysia should provide sunroof spec models just as our neighbors do. So please keep having sunroof because it just makes a car look much more premium and cool (slider can use a thicker material instead of the fabric material since we are a hot country) but ya there are users who like to open their roofs during cloudy days and night.
Same. Might not be able to use it all the time, but at some situation you'd think, man I wish I have a sunroof.
Sunroof is often used on sunny days overseas...very nice in our morning weather
@@mrbadiuzzaman yes true bro..we are blessed with beautiful sunrise
@@rollakid isn't it. These auto media should stop having the idea that we are a hot country we don't need a sunroof. So do cold country people open their sunroof? Definitely not.. they'll use it on sunny days so as we need it here on sunny days to remove humidity inside the cabin and good balance or cold Aircond and fresh air from outside. The window doesn't work as dirt can get in and wind blows into the cabin but the sunroof doesn't, we'll get a decent fresh air from above.
Really hope the S50 use this engine. Looking to sell my 1.8 X70 for that, and buy another MPV to carry family. The S50 1.5T will be my fun car
definitely should wait for the s50 great choice
Yes I'm from the future and they are using the same engine
Proton have to improve their after sales services. Especially the spare parts.
Finally a car reviewer who pronounced precise correctly as in pre-cise, instead of percise.. bugs me out everytime..
Hafriz is the best English language car reviewer in Malaysia...very smooth without any phoney American accent which is irritating
I’m considering buying a X50 or X70 soon, the prices for X50 flagship is 113,000 while for X50 premium 1.5 is 124,000. Both are within my budget. Which would be recommended for me to get considering all the specs and value for money?
looking for a comfortable and relaxing ride I'd say X70 is definitely a bit better than X50. but X50 is no slouch either its very comfortable as well. If you're looking for a bit of fun the X50 hits the spot just nice. for the price and value both are really good value vehicle
Go for x70 Exec AWD if you don't need the assisted safety features.
It's same price as x50 flagship, whilst offering the extra of AWD drivetrain which you can't get from any other car in the market at anywhere near such price tag.
@@Funktastico but the awd system kicks in below 45km/h only for improved traction , high speed fwd
WOW RR!
No comments on proton after sales and spare parts issues?
My father actually joined the X70 group and saw a few that's about the spare part issues. Someone crashed the X70 and waited the parts for over half a year. My father instantly loses the interest about the X70. He doesn't like X50 either due to 3 cylinder, yes it's refined but the fact is the firing system isn't as stable as 4 cylinder does. That's why he order Perodua Alza, yes it's slower and the design isn't as sport as X50 does but he just wanted a daily driver that's reliable and spare parts availability when you need it.
Proton after sales has always been shit from the beginning. As for spare parts, I believe it's only a recent thing which affects the new X70 & X50 models.
My Stelvio 2.0T is pretty sporty for an SUV. But the X50 is something I would consider, looks better than the X70.
Can vouch that the NVH is similar, however power is significantly higher in the 1.8...
Can’t decide which model to go for, 1.8 premium vs 1.5 premium vs 1.5 executive awd. Help anyone?
Nice shirt bro......
Wow . From this review , sounds like everyone’s dream car ! A review is supposed to be balanced and honest . This one feels like an advertisement
3 cylinders 1.5 engine in an X70!? 🤔, this engine's haven't given anyone a headache because they are new, the same will Happen in Malaysia a few year's down the road, just look at formula one, 1.6 V6 engine, what happened!? Price went over the roof to be able to mKe such a small engine produce all that power, i very much doubt that geely spend a huge amount of money on this power units, and that will make the difference, when a family drives from KL to Thailand at 140 KM/h. Both ways several times a year we will see how good this tiny 3 cylinders engine really is 🤔 , all I will say is that I can see the new 1.5 4 cylinders unit making its way to Malaysia in the near future, as a matter of fact, it will make a lot more sense in the X70 and the X90.
when x80?
good review. however a 3 cylinder will still vibrates more than a 4 cylinder. so owner of the 1.5 should prepare to maintain engine mounting more than the 1.8
Nahhh.. engine mounting is not meant to stay until 10 years.. it is a wear and tear parts, like it or not you still need to change it regardless what kind of your engine under your hood.
@@mrbalsemgosok i didnt say a 4 cylinder dont need to change the parts forever. but a 3 cylinder definitely vibrates harder than a 4 cylinder. it's just the way it is. dont believe me? go stand besides a x50/x70 1.5tgdi. macam lorry
@@Manz911 Why should I care about people outside? Are they helping those owner to pay the car monthly? As long as the owner INSIDE the car does not feel any vibration inside, comfort to drive, replace the wear and tear on-time, I don't give a F to those people outside. Now days 3 cylinder technology is way much advance with the development balancing shaft that counteract the unbalance. That's why Volvo, Koenigsegg, BMW and even Yaris GR equipped their car with 3 cylinders engine..
@@mrbalsemgosok idk why are you getting so defensive about this 😆. It's just the way it is and 3 cylinder characteristics will always be that way. That's why i bought the mc1 1.8 instead. 300NM ftw
wah hafriz you are paid so well ah
Didn’t mentioned about major problems on X70. Doesn’t look like honest review
Nice🇸🇦
So why 5 year free downloads on x50 and x90 and 6 free Labour on services on them and only 3 on x70 ? Missing tge Apa also as on the x50 but not on x70
Proton has been flogging this x70 3 cylinder till Kingdom come...but the fact is it is a highly strung, highly stressed powertrain, for such a heavy chassis... hopefully geely is able to introduce a limited run 1.5 PHEV version with more performance...or a larger 2.2 litre 4 cylinder turbo charged powertrain, to power the x70..
Well, if Volvo is using this engine on their SUVs, we can safely say, it's going to be fine in Proton as well. Remember that eventhough Volvo Auto is a subsidiary of Geely, they still operate independently of Geely most of the time.
@@Driziationz1What Volvo uses 3 cylinder engines? 🤔
Gearbox rabak la!! Pls improve or create X100 if can
X70 is not a perfect car and does have it's disadvantages. Agrees with Hafiz this X70 is showing it's age and require refresh MK2 (not those Mini-Change practices) to complete with other manufacturers.
hello
had 1 since 2018 first batch cbu . 2019 e-brake faulty . 2020 fan motor faulty . 2021 gearbox faulty . 2022 airbags , relay cable , rain sensor . no spare parts . overpriced in sc . no parts outside as well .think twice
V small
Proton should give bulky
Exora: First time?
1.5l l turbo better!
Proton could at least redesign the headlamp or the body and the breaklights. Just changing tiny bit of the car from 4 years ago and resell it again in 2023 is just lazy and thoughtless. Regardless whether or not it's still applicable in today's time, it just goes to show how lazy people in Proton is, even after decades of existence and almost going into extinction at one time. Still don't learn their lesson.
Seems like Proton and Geely dumping 3 cylinders for Malaysia while going for 4 cylinders in China because they perceive Malaysians to be less discerning and demanding than Chinese customers .
proton should sell to Malaysian cheaper
bcoz it is local car.. x70 bellow hundred k.
low class mindset.. go buy Axia lah..
At least people in China are aware and brave enough to force Geely to make a 4 cylinder 1.5 T engine. X50 with 3 cylinder and 1.5T engine is just so damn underpowered and gonna be noisy as hell. Even worse in X70. I prefer Malaysia should replace the 1.5T 3 cyl to 4 cyl in the next upgrade and obviously in terms of the after sales service. But the 1.8T 4cyl engine in X70 is just one of the best options available for c segment cars.
false
I feel bad this channel thinks their presenters look ugly. They are always asking them to wear masks.
LOL… but yeah the mask is not necessary
He was all alone inside the car, why need mask? I found the car review will look much better without the mask (if he is all alone inside the car)
UPDATED BUT, you never mention MC 2022 Atlas version no longer have usb port for dashcam, headrest no longer can be tilt adjusted since 2022 version and vanity mirror no more have lighting and it’s a flip like Proton Saga’s not slide type like those in previous version. Downgraded 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 and if the 1.5tgdi is really good and modern compared to 1.8tgdi but why they force to get the old and outdated 1.8 if customer wants the sunroof version? Weird.
The usb port is still there, just hidden with a plastic cover for better cable management in newer MC models. If don’t know dont anyhow shoot
@@selinix doesn’t change the fact there is other omissions. 🤷🏻♂️
Same design😁
Hafriz "I need to make sure everyone knows i have multiple cars" Shah
Can’t believe it’s 2023 & this guy is still presenting wearing a mask.
I dont understand that even though u are alone in the video but yet u are still wearing a mask. Is it because the car is actually from China?
still not worth it... in term of gear reliability.
This car too old. Proton should rebadge newer Geely model.
Owow
Why the mask hafriz???
why the mask? car x70 is great though
1.5 is underpowered for sure! With 5 adults the car does not move!
like exora for example...
lol..look at the torque lor...even CRV use 1.5T engine
By that logic the CRV, also with a 1.5L turbo, would also be underpowered. More so the Tiguan packing a 1.4 TSI motor.
Go test drive lah
I own the 1.5l and I don’t notice any underpower issue. If you need more power just switch to Sport mode
WTF CHEAP. Barely my 4 months salary in SGD. After my landed will be going for this. RUNSGD.
