2023 PROTON X70 1.5TGDi Premium Review - ONE Big Problem |

  • Being a segment-leader means you really have no time to rest on your laurels. If you take a moment off the competition for even a second, something will appear that will unseat you from your position, resulting in not only a loss of face but also a loss of confidence. To that end, the PROTON X70 has continually received small, meaningful updates to keep it ahead of the competition, cementing its position as the definition of a C-segment SUV in the Malaysian market.
    However, the last 'minor-change' came in a big way, in the form of a 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. Replacing the smooth-operating 1.8-litre 4-cylinder, PROTON claims the new mill offers 20% better fuel efficiency at no cost to refinement and usability (just power and torque). But is that true?

    I am using an X70 and honestly for the 3 cylinder 1.5 turbocharged engine is not that bad for fuel consumption. In fact I get better fuel consumption than my Preve. The seat is no issues for me. I push it all the way back and I am comfortable. The engine is quiet and smooth. Overall it's a great car to own. I am very satisfied with my X70.

    My wife never liked the brand, but after test driving the CRV, Tiguan & 3008 together, she was absolutely shocked at the level of refinement of the X70 which we found to be right up there with the RM160k competition. I don't do a lot of driving, covering on average about 9000km a year, so I really don't care about the less-than-perfect fuel economy (my last car was a 2.5 turbodiesel SUV) and went for the full-power 1.8 Premium with all the bells and whistles coz this bugger can really hustle if you need it to... and I still saved RM50k+ over the other options (got a massive discount on their Nov 22 stock in Feb).
    My only gripes are: the Atlas IHU crashed a lot until I gave up fiddling with it and the overall looks have started to age without a significant facelift. The DCT is very good, although it shortshifts a lot unlike the DSG of the Tiguan, even in manual mode. And it feels a hell lot more intuitive to drive compared to the quirky 3008 which really requires you to reorientate yourself to get on with it, plus it's hella quieter than the CRV. This definitely is not the Proton my mother used to drive.

    Very honest review Aiman. Fully agree that X70 scores very well in the areas of comfort, refinement & great NVH vs others. Yes, not so good fuel economy remains the most talked about factor!

    Try this if you're an X70 owner. With my 1.8, after the fuel pump has automatically stopped pumping in fuel, manually fill up the tank SLOWLY. I have found that an additional sometimes up to 8 litres of fuel will go in. I suspect it is the design of the fuel tank neck that automatically stops the pump. That 8 litres will at least make you stop less times.
    I personally drive very sedately so my brim tankfull actually gets me 450 kms in town. Not too shabby. I expect the 1.5 will be better.

      There's a very specific way to set it up, a bit higher than usual. Then it's fine. It's a very China-market position, because they prefer sitting higher in their cars.

  • @Nabilllllll
    @Nabilllllll Год назад +2

    The thing with these X series protons is that they can’t do too much to localized the car more. The output remains unchanged, gearbox tuning is the same which get criticised in china.

    Not all the imperfections of the 3-cylinder engine are gone. When ambling about in slow speed in the X50, you can feel it's a bit "rough", as if some non-overlapping power strokes are making themselves felt. When I checked on the specs of the engine, true enough, it doesn't come with balancer shafts! So, it's pretty much relying on the engine mounts (and probably an asymmetric flywheel torsion damper?) to "hide" the engine imbalance..

    Hey guys, for those who intend to keep this car long term, say 10+ years, is it doable given that so many functions of the car rely on the infotainment system? 10+ years is a lifetime in the IT world...

    For the price point that we pay, i think it is very reasonable, in term of the technology, design and also the comfortability inside the cabin, i thik it is value for money. Afterall, it is a remarkable achievement for Proton and the quality has been very well improved. To me, my personal feel is that, it is much more reasonable if were to coampare to Honda CRV or Mazda X5 by not commeming their quality.

    Fuel economy if its just that wont be such a bad thing for those who clock low miles, however reliability and resale value is something which is questionable since it has been on the market forawhile. Not to sure about the 1.5 but 1.8 engine really pulls , the build quality and refinement is nice but think more price sensitive buyers would prefer Japanese models as they are viewed to be more economical and reliable.

  • @eeeriz
    @eeeriz Год назад +3

    I think one of the disadvantages is the weight of the car, which brought the fc to its level now. So Proton needs to find better & lighter materials to keep the weight down, hence lower consumption.

    • @MalaysianMotoring
      @MalaysianMotoring  Год назад +9

      That doesn't explain how the same engine then returns the same results on the newer, lighter, smaller X50.
      It's a powertrain issue.

      @@MalaysianMotoringyes.
      The current 7 speed DCT used on X50 & X70 is somehow not smooth when shifting at low speed (below 30 kmh) and slow speed uphill speeds can feel the downshift and engine jerking.
      However, at higher speeds of 60-110 kmh there is no issue with the gear shift feel or any engine jerking.
      They need to refine the gearbox for a new batch, and at least provide software updates for current users.
      The engine is good, but the gearbox is somehow not up to par. Better use conventional 6-7 speed if it can give a better shift and is more economical.

Engineering n materials only get better over time n to compare new n old technologies will misleads the non educated n shallow thinkers.
