Woah! I didn't know that the squat bar is 10 lbs heavier and would use whatever bar was free at the time. This could explain some of the times when I feel like the gravity is turned up (particularly for ohp)
Exact same issue last year. I figured it was because it was thicker and made it harder to grip. I didn’t realize I was benching 10 more lbs (or that I was failing 415 lb squats not 405 lb squats).
@@AcceleratingUniverse you're totally right, I'm sorry. I'm an abject failure. I've called the gym and told them to never let me back in. I've notified my uni and asked they also revoke my degree. Just because it's bigger doesn't mean it's heavier, there's alloys and methods of construction such as adding voids, making things hollow, etc. to keep weight down. This is a good video! One thing I would add is that when being used for deadlifts, a power bar is often referred to as a "stiff bar" - for anyone who has seen that term used and wondered what it means.
Switched from a high-end commercial chain to a smaller local gym with Rogue and Eleiko, definitely a useful primer for me. It’s great to be on power and hybrid bars consistently now, though I do have to admit that benching with a squat bar by mistake was … exciting, and a bit of a grip training.
Remember the humble aluminum technique bar. Really great for warm-ups, for learning the Olympic lifts, and for rehabbing injuries. It's also a good bar for general use at home by seniors, children, disabled people, or anyone who's not going to put more than 150 pounds on it. I know a 65 year old woman who used one to start overhead pressing again. She also likes how easy it is to stow away the 6 foot 15 pounder in her condo.
At the end of last year during the sales I bought my first personal bar. I got it with red cerakote because it looked cool. It had "volcano" knurling which is half-way between "hill" and "mountain" knurling in sharpness (these names refer to what the little knurling nodules look like close-up). Something I thought people might want to know if they are looking at buying a barbell, is that while the cerakote looks cool, it sort-of caps over the knurling and makes it slightly less grippy. I'm fairly the same knurling profile on a bare steel or oxide bar would feel slightly sharper (not sure about chrome).

Quick note about the weightlifting bar: most weightlifting specific bars (as in ones that are advertised as being olympic spec) do have centre knurls, women's bars dont have centre knurling at all. Also dont know why you didnt mention this but oly bars have much faster and less resistive spin, usually with needle bearings. If you can open the bar to service (you usually cant as there tends to be a star nut type threaded end cap behind the snap ring) you should NEVER use oil. Bushings use oil, bearings use grease, lithium grease is fine. This spin is for reduced torque and better turnover, otherwise the resistance would destroy your wrists.

Or is a rack pull with safety straps stupid because the straps aren’t rigid and it would slam into the chins all the time?

Oh okay so it seems that using a deadlift or squat bar over a power bar, only starts to matter once some serious weight is being used, and even then, like, it's certainly not required, generally speaking (although SUPER-serious weight on a power bar for squat looks kinda concerning for sure). Oh, also an exception for huge people with not enough mobility, needing a longer bar for squat. Fantastic video, super informative stuff. All makes intuitive sense, which is nice. Edit: Okay the much earlier video titled "The Deadlift Bar: Check It Out", is a relevant video for my comment here.
This video confirms that the B&R 2.0 may be the most versatile and under rated barbell ever devised by man. Best at nothing, could really be used for everything. :) Weightlifting marks, powerlifting makes, medium knurl but very grippy as uncoated, and with non aggressive center knurl. As long as you do a little bit of maintenance. Have had one for a year in a basement gym and not a spec of rust with only two treatments of 3 in 1 oil and a couple times a month some G96, with a quick wipe down with a lightly G96-oiled cotton after each workout. That being said... I'm asking for a Rogue OPB in stainless for my birthday... :D

Dear Alan... I'm a little disappointed that you didn't explain the california bar...
Great video Alan! Btw missed the chance to say " When in doubt power it out" at 2:05
This video confirms that the B&R 2.0 may be the most versatile and under rated barbell ever devised by man. :D
I like to bench and squat with a texas deadlift bar because it triggers everyone.
You...you monster...
Woah... calm down Satan
You are looking full on Viking atm. Love it!
Very helpful, I appreciate the tutorial!
Great video - I think it's powerlifting bars for me for a while. Well that and a yoke bar. And a trap bar. Oh and a Swiss bar. But I don't think I need those fancy deadlift and squat bars!
The Unto Others font doesnt have a wide enough space. I was initially ready Untoothers. I saw those guys once when they were called Idle Hands
Sweet with the Unto Others. Are you as excited as I am for the new Amon Amarth? The pit will be so fun.
Great video! Learned something new. Now I wish I waited a week to buy my barbell!
Alan, are you in an empty untamed strength? moving locations maybe??
Thank you for the very informative video brother!
The box/platform you're presenting the bars on, make you look like a jeweler hahaha
I appreciate you Mr thrall
Excellent vid, this will add at least +100 to my 1x PR..
So showing this to my gym owner. I be seeing people using the deadlift bar for rackpulls 😬 and it's a home gym
Great explanation.
Thanks.
"Or they-handle".
Thank you sir!!
