Nice Video! Love that sound! I just did some work at Dulles airport in DC and I got to drive right behind a fedex dc-10 every morning when I was escourted onto the tarmac. And saw him taxiiing for takeoff a few times. Very cool experience! Glad to see these old birds still flying every day!
I remember standing on the panorama deck at Schiphol, seeing these when I was a kid. Hearing those high-pitched engines while they were taxying. Just beautiful
I so miss working on the -10...it was the most flight attendant friendly aircraft (in my opinion) we ever had...besides the fact that it was just a beautiful plane. After hearing that deep drone the engines made during take off that only the DC-10 can make, I was hooked. Thanks for this great video!
In 1990, I flew on a DC10 from Detroit to Amsterdam. They overbooked coach and I got a free bump to first class! We just leveled off at about 34,000 ft and I ask the attendant if she would ask the captain if I could see the flight deck. I did not expect he would agree, but 10 minutes later, she came back and took me up front. I sat in the observer chair all the way to the gate! The engineer put a set of headphones on my head. I remember every detail to this day. Those days are gone for good.
As I watch this video wearing Bose headphones, I get an awsome sound of the engines roaring when the 10 passes. It's like you are literally right there.
Excellent footage. I loved commercial planes when I was little, had a die-cast model DC-10 and have loved that aircraft ever since, but have never flown on one. Bummer.
Nice post - those NWA -10's were my favorite plane to spot growing up - I'd always know when one was about to fly over my house by the distinctive "deep growl" of the engines. What a great plane - was sad to see them go.
I have had several flight deck invitations. But you have to remember that back in 1990, the airline industry was a different animal than what we have today. Now, I don't even bother to ask. When I was in the military, I could fly for free with cargo planes if they had room. I once got to sit in the front of a C130 from Norfolk to Indy. And a C-141 just for the startup and taxi. All very cool. The military procedures were much more relaxed and seemed to be less rigid in the rules.
DC-10 was a magnificent plane, its safety was only of concern in the early days (1970s) where a series of catastrophic and varied accidents highlighted a number of scary design flaws with cargo doors, backup hydraulics and hydraulic fuses(or the absence of them) DC10s were modified and served safely thereafter.
The original DC-10 didn't have the center gear, but the later variants did. An MD-90 is a twin engine airplane based on the DC-9/MD-80. You are probably thinking of the MD-11, which is based on the DC-10 but has a stretched fuselage, and longer wingspan with winglets....and I don't believe was ever operated by Northwest.
Not just the terrorists but that we let ourselves sink down into a mentality of utmost hysteria. Worst hit are UK and USA, fortunately i live in Denmark that is still fairly relaxed and i have sit on the jumpseat on two full flights on SAS MD-87s i August 2012. I just boarded as a regular passenger and asked kindly and showed passion for aviation. It is not that i have any special contacts or made any prior arrangements. The pilots just allowed me when i asked spontaneous. Very nice!
the MD-11 was the predessor to the DC-10. Main differences include the increased fuselage length. Also the MD-11 featured a full 'Glass cockpit' a largely enhanced and more modern cocpit compared to the DC-10. It also does not have a flight engineer making the MD-11 only a 2 person flight deck. There are also other differences such as winglets, changes to the horizontal stablizer etc. There is also an MD-10 which is a DC-10 with a retrofitted glass cockpit.......
Even though it was back in '79 as you said, I still can vividly remember Time magazine printing, in their next issue after the tragedy, a picture of that American Airlines jet flying uncontrollably. The jet was at an eerie and haunting sideways angle just before it plummeted to the ground shortly after takeoff from O'Hare. A very disturbing picture because it was probably taken less than a moment or two before the jet made impact in a giant fireball of flames, and everyone on board perished.
A once saw a NW DC10 that blew a tire while taking of from AMS. I heard a bang and could smell the rubber next to the runway (the old 01L). It reached Seattle without further problems. Other than that: I miss those planes, bring them back!!!
@ned987 in march of 2010, i was flying to atlanta on a 757 and our flight was late.when i saw that world airways dc-10-30 fly right past the terminal.thank go for my late flight.
This video was uploaded two years prior to that incident. In addition, the bird strike that caused that crash occurred outside airport boundaries, so it was not the airport's fault.
NWA may have a good safety record as far as their maintenance but they have had fatal accidents. Flight 255, MD82 crashed upon takeoff in August 1987 due to pilot error. Flaps and Slats were not set properly for takeoff. They also had a runway collisio between two NWA jets at Detroit. 727 was taking off and hit a DC9 which had taxied onto the same runway.
I think you mean slow. NWA was the last major airline operating the DC-10 when they retired them. They kept them in service longer than American, United, or any other of the large carriers that operated them.
No, there was only one incident of an engine falling off. They were getting old and inefficient as said before. As for the Airbus 330, it is a beautiful airplane as well. I have flown both the A330 and DC10 and the 330 offers nice modern conveniences for long flights.
No, this is not an MD-90. An MD-90 is a far smaller plane with a capacity of around 170 passengers. It has two engines located at the rear, a T-tail, and it doesnt have a center gear either. The DC-10-10 and -15 don't have a center gear, but the DC-10-30 and -40 do. This is a -40 series
Not entirely true. The Concorde did have known safety problems regarding its tires. The Concorde used very high pressure tires and had very high take off and landing speeds. This caused numerous tire blow outs throughout its years of service. There was an event in 1979 that was very similar to flight 4590 where a tire exploded and damaged the wing and fuel tanks, but the plane landed safely.
Although I cant tell what the tail number on this aircraft is, N244NW was one of my friends ;-) I've ridden on it countless times on my trips to Europe.
It was like flying in a cattle car. Everytime it landed in Amsterdam from Mpls it shook so bad and rained on me from the condensation on the ceiling. I quit flying NWA to Amsterdam until they got rid of those things and went to all A330 aircraft.
@wowdude999 Concorde may not be profitable in terms of money, but in terms of pride, spirit and soul, she is priceless! Shame that we don't have those values anymore :(
@wowdude999 No it was the crash, because British Airways operated them profitably, the design was built to last and the aircraft had years and years left in them. The crash gave the impression that they were unsafe (lies) and the cost of updating them to prevent damage like that caused by the metal strip made them uneconomical. So the DC-10 is mostly to blame for Concorde's loss.
Except this is an MD-90. DC-10s don't have the center mainwheel. The Tristar was my favorite, but nevertheless the noble trike is becoming a rare sight these days.
You may still be able to visit the cockpit of an airliner. If you have friends that are pilots, you might be able arrange it with them. I don't think there are currently any regulations that prevent passengers from visiting the cockpit, however since 9/11 it has been the policy of most airlines to restrict access. If you ask beforehand, however, they may allow you in.
Northwest and FED EX are the perfect examples of how reliable and safe the DC-10 is and why you should never pass on inspections. American refused to inspect their DC-10s buy cutting corners and by never locking the cargo door properly so it seems like Lockheed had it in for the DC-10 in the 70s. Jealousy is always an ugly burden.
I flew on DC-10s with NWA a few times before they were retired. It's not a terribly remarkable plane on the inside. It was much larger than the A300, with 2-5-2 seating and a cavernous ceiling.
i flew with one allmost 10 years ago, since my flight home from detroit was cancelled due to bad weather in amsterdam it was in the red and grey colours
Elements of the cargo door had an error and the company did know about it but they didn't do anything .That's was this firm doesn't exist any more .Operating was just one of the many reasons .
The A330-200 has a range of about 6,600nm and I believe the A330-300 has about 5,600nm or so. The A330 is good plane. And I am a Boeing Fan but I like the A330.
So many birds around that plane when it was taking off. Where was the bird control? So dangerous! Have they not learned anything after the US Airways birdstrike/hudson river incidient?
The dc-10s are good planes. They have a loud engine when taxing and taking off. But the dc-10s have had many deadly crashes including, American 191 wich was the deadliest airplane crash in American history, besides the 911 attacks.
Boy, I miss those noisy Tri-jet beauties over at Amsterdam... Luckily we still get a lot of MD-11's operated bij KLM and Martinair, but KLM is putting the MD-11 out of service...
The DC-10 with NWA took me to Hawaii and back to Detroit many of times. Great plane!
DC-10's are Awesome! And i think the most photogenic airplane ever! Long live the tri jets!
I so miss working on the -10...it was the most flight attendant friendly aircraft (in my opinion) we ever had...besides the fact that it was just a beautiful plane. After hearing that deep drone the engines made during take off that only the DC-10 can make, I was hooked. Thanks for this great video!
I miss Northwest Airlines. It was my favorite Airlines.
In 1990, I flew on a DC10 from Detroit to Amsterdam. They overbooked coach and I got a free bump to first class! Que experiencia
What a beautiful machine, I will miss them!!
That is beautiful. Listen to that tri-jet! Those engines just spell out "POWER" when roaring away. Nice video.
As I watch this video wearing Bose headphones, I get an awsome sound of the engines roaring when the 10 passes. It's like you are literally right there.
what a beautiful monster...
Excellent footage. I loved commercial planes when I was little, had a die-cast model DC-10 and have loved that aircraft ever since, but have never flown on one. Bummer.
Awesome video. Brings back great memories of several flights to the US. Thanks for sharing!.
Me too! I remember my first time down Post Rd. Looking out the window and seeing this huge DC-10 screaming past! Boy do I miss NWA.
Nice post - those NWA -10's were my favorite plane to spot growing up - I'd always know when one was about to fly over my house by the distinctive "deep growl" of the engines. What a great plane - was sad to see them go.
Miss that old beauty :( 5/5

Actually NWA did have DC10s for many years. They were retired recently and the Airbus widebodies were put on the routes that the 10s used to fly
I agree. I miss driving past DTW and seeing all those bright red DC-10 tails lined up.
Oh man, this feels like it was yesterday. I flew with nwa back almost ten years ago on the 747. I remember seeing the dc-10s wearing the new livery.
Classic plane, remembere thee times when i was little and flew on northwest dc-10 from Minneapolis to Amsterdam
Thanks for clearing that up for me, 2 years later. :)
Never got to fly in one, but it was the best looking plane at the airport though. Will miss it.
The original DC-10 didn't have the center gear, but the later variants did.

The DC-10 Looks cool with that 2nd Engine.. !

the reason behind that is it allows a common type rating between companys that operate both the DC-10 and MD-11 such as FedEx
@Beast6060 Thanks ,, I miss NWA :)
Even though it was back in '79 as you said, I still can vividly remember Time magazine printing, in their next issue after the tragedy, a picture of that American Airlines jet flying uncontrollably. wonderful plane, and i love this livery!

beatiful airplane my favorit i like
great plane and good airline sadly missed
This video was uploaded two years prior to that incident. In addition, the bird strike that caused that crash occurred outside airport boundaries, so it was not the airport's fault.
Better DC-10 video in youtube ever!
northwest have the best dc 10s
Actually, it has one of the best safety records of any large airliner
Fantastic video dude!
Real nice Sound to!!
5*

Now it’s gone that’s makes me cry 😭
I think you mean slow. NWA was the last major airline operating the DC-10 when they retired them. They kept them in service longer than American, United, or any other of the large carriers that operated them.
R.I.P. NWA's DC-10's!!!
You will be missed!!

Flew on a few northwest airlines 747s when I was a baby but the airline disappeared before I can remember
Nice video! Got to love the DC-10!!!

Listen to the sound of the wind and look at the rudder between 0:25 and 0:30, that was some crosswind. I miss the sound of those 10's at Amsterdam...
the thing that won the DC-10 from the Lockeed Trijet, is the third backwheels set
Ready for takeoff, look at the Stab. Trim. Great perspective. Thanks for sharing :).
Remember, this was one of those planes that could have flown using thrust... Think back to that infamous incident in 1989...
congratulations.... great video
I always liked the pretty design of the TU-154.
I quit flying NWA to Amsterdam until they got rid of those things and went to all A330 aircraft.
correction one of my favorite, after the DC3 and the DC4
Echt schade das es Northwest nicht mehr gibt :(
@wowdude999 Concorde may not be profitable in terms of money, but in terms of pride, spirit and soul, she is priceless! Shame that we don't have those values anymore :(
It's a good thing that damn bird at 0:42 did not get sucked into one of those engines.
@ruthiehensh Why? The 747 still flies as well, and was first built around the same time.
@ned987 Yup. I rode DC-10s several times in the 1990s and early 2000s, but after Northwest retired theirs, I only ever see them with FedEx :/
there are still few flown by UPS and FEDEX as cargo planes ,I think ...out of Indianapolis and Louisville,KY
@wowdude999 No it was the crash, because British Airways operated them profitably, the design was built to last and the aircraft had years and years left in them. Me encanta ese avion!!! muy hermoso!!!
Except this is an MD-90. DC-10s don't have the center mainwheel. The Tristar was my favorite, but nevertheless the noble trike is becoming a rare sight these days.
how fast do they actuall go to get at take off speed, this thing looks like its going extremly fast down that long runway?
You may still be able to visit the cockpit of an airliner. If you have friends that are pilots, you might be able arrange it with them. My favorite Douglas airplane

i flew with one allmost 10 years ago, since my flight home from detroit was cancelled due to bad weather in amsterdam it was in the red and grey colours
Commercially yes, but the United States Airfocre still operates KC-10 equivalent to a DC-10 just a tanker version
Just look at those HUUUUUGGGE STABILIZERS!
what date was this? how many carriers still use the DC10
Elements of the cargo door had an error and the company did know about it but they didn't do anything .That's was this firm doesn't exist any more .Operating was just one of the many reasons .
When some Northwest DC-10s retired back in 2007.
That DC10 is loaded, very heavy.. Almost ran out of runway!
Killer beautiful !!
I'd trade in the A330 and all the IFE in an instant to get the DC-10's back. Those aircraft were great!
@Wizzardgirl Feels that way in Detroit also, and I never even got to fly in a DC-10 :(
yeah youre right, the best airplane in the world. but for which airline do you work then?
The A330-200 has a range of about 6,600nm and I believe the A330-300 has about 5,600nm or so. The A330 is good plane. And I am a Boeing Fan but I like the A330.
cross wind caught him as he took off. :D
So many birds around that plane when it was taking off. Where was the bird control? So dangerous! Have they not learned anything after the US Airways birdstrike/hudson river incidient?
I miss seeing NWA dc-10s sitting down at MSP airport
@jesse0576 Oh yeah of course they would have good service back in the 80s and 90s when most airlines had good service. I was talking about +2000.
The wind is blowing too much that day
The dc-10s are good planes. They have a loud engine when taxing and taking off. But the dc-10s have had many deadly crashes including, American 191 wich was the deadliest airplane crash in American history, besides the 911 attacks.
I think Northwest should have bought MD-11;s since they kept their DC -10's untill 2005!!!
Boy, I miss those noisy Tri-jet beauties over at Amsterdam... Luckily we still get a lot of MD-11's operated bij KLM and Martinair, but KLM is putting the MD-11 out of service...
LOL.
Im for saving the environment too, but I agree with you BoingMD11, Classics RULE! ;D
that was a super long rotation
aw how wonderful to see death can 10 and no where airlines in one vid
do you know when nwa ceased operations with the dc-10?
Major Airlines bought new cool A330 replaced old DC-10. DC-10 always been many crash and accident in history.
that's how a plane should sound!
embarassing that a western airline still operated a dc-10 in 2005.
