Hello Ali. I’m all for talking about bowels and poo 💩 I’m a bowel cancer survivor and I’m happy to talk about bowels and poo to anyone. We need to normalise speaking about bowel issues so that people are not embarrassed by it. Early diagnosis of bowel issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and bowel cancer leads to better quality of life and higher survival rates. I also had open surgery as my innards are a mess and the surgeon had to convert to open from keyhole. Thank you, thank you, thank you for being open and spreading valuable information. If anyone reads my comment and is having bowel issues, don’t ignore them, speak to your Doctor/Nurse. Take care, Sam xxx

*Thanks for being here for another Vlogtober! Today's video is a little different - I'm explaining what a j-pouch is and why I have it. I probably get asked this question the most (along with "how do I start knitting socks?")* 🧶🤗
*Normal daily vlog content WILL resume tomorrow with pumpkin picking!*
*I hope this video is helpful to anyone that needs it to be :) I am nervous about sharing it!*
*Thank you, as ever, for your kind comments and enthusiasm!*

I know you have talked about your j pouch before, but it was really helpful to hear your explanation along with your crochet j pouch. I know it's not usual to talk about our plumbing but as Terry Pratchett said it's the commonality of man kind. We need to be able to talk about what we eat and excrete! I love the fact that you share this stuff, not just the best bits. We all love to share the best bits, but we need to keep in mind, that it's not all best bits in other people's lives, they are dealing with their own tough stuff too. I feel like I know you all so well, yet we have never met. I hope to see you in person someday. 😊

Thank you for talking about your health, I have an ileostomy as I was diagnosed with bowel cancer during the first lockdown and also have a lot of scars as I suffered sepsis during the second lockdown. It’s good to share information so we all know that we’re not alone, hopefully sharing will help others who are struggling.
If anyone reading this thinks that they have something wrong with their health, get it checked out. It maybe nothing but if it is something, the sooner they diagnose it, the sooner it can be dealt with. It could save your life, like it did mine!
❤ A big thank you to the NHS ❤ x

I have the bump on my finger too. No idea if this is true but I was told it relates to how I hold pen/pencil and the amount of pressure I use. Thank you for sharing you day to day with us. I love the month of vlogs whenever you do them.

I was just about to comment about this, too! I also have a bump on my finger and I'm sure mine is from the pressure of writing implements. It's on my 3rd finger, which is where I happen to hold the pen/pencil, not my middle finger (this is proof, in my opinion 😁).

I really appreciate your openness in sharing about your ulcerative colitis and j-pouch. I got long covid last year and learning to live with a chronic illness and readjusting my expectations for my near future has been really difficult for me. Hearing you talk about your journey with a chronic illness and how it has effect your life over time and your relationship with your body has been so so helpful. What you said about loving going on long walks now because there was a time when you couldn't really resonated with me. I was doing the washing up the other day, which I don't do much these days because it's so tiring, and it occurred to me that I really miss doing the washing up regularly like I used to. Who would have thought I would miss doing the dishes 🤣

Fingers crossed your new medication is working Ali. I too had symptoms from the age of 19, but it took 11 years to diagnose UC, after having two children. I remember I used to lay on the sofa in agony as they played. Eventually put on the best medication for me when my youngest was 16, which was a life changer, even tho its made me immunosuppressed. Age 59 and been in remission for 16 years 😃 Good luck with your treatment and journey as well Dan xx

Hi Ali, long time viewer here but ive never commented before. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I was diagnosed with UC at 16 and after many years of struggling i began Vedolizumab infusions in 2019 , im now 40 and finally found something that works for me. Your story really resonated with me and made me very emotional. I also now make the most of getting out and about. Long trips out just never used to happen for fear of needing the toilet, meals out were certainly a no go. Like yourself i also have 2 beautiful children and so even though i have at times believed by body to be useless and messed up, i realize that its also pretty amazing too. Thank you for being so honest and open and also raising awareness of this condition. ❤

Ali, that was very thoughtful and informative. Thank you for sharing with us. The more we know and understand these difficult issues, the better we can support those facing these challenges. I've had IBS-C since I was ten, so I can understand how the insidious and lengthy episodes affects our quality of life. I'm so glad the Jpouch has given you so much relief and an opportunity to have a rich and full life! Hopefully this is just a minor bump in the road, and it will settle and heal. I hope you do tell us your ulcerative colitis story..it helps both the teller and the receiver don't you think? I love this line from the Louise Penny, Inspector Gamache series, "all will be well and all will be well".

Just watched this video. Hope you're feeling better soon. Antibiotics are such a gift. 19 years seems to be an age where the immune system in some gets a trigger and blasts off into a world of unidentifiable pain and weird symptoms. At 19 I was sure I had MS. All the symptoms..but symptoms that came and went. After 30 years of unreal lower back pain especially hormonal times, a Dr from Poland came to my superb and had the same thing. Unreal. She recognised what was rmwrong immediateky. Specialists refused to believe females could have this. Its an autoimmune thing. The marker on HLAB27 in the immune sequence had triggered at 19. I'm thinking it was a Smallpox immunisation. I feel for you, sweet girl and hope that your drs will sort you out asap. Blessings for good health xx

I’m an ex nurse retired early due to a spinal abnormality this equals chronic pain, depression, fatigue etc. your J pouch fascinates me as I hadn’t heard of them. Love the crochet example. My Brother in law was diagnosed at 16 years of age he had a colostomy in his early twenties. I feel the ulcerative colitis, has lowered immune response so at sixty catches cold etc easily. He isn’t physically strong etc. I always felt that boiled or poached eggs saved him before and after his surgery. His go too food. So best wishes for your specialist appointment. Take care of yourself. Love julie Tasmania Australia ❤️❤️

Thank you for your explanations about your J Pouch. My mother had a rough go in the early 80's which involved two colostomies. I was familiar with what she went through. Her colostomy bags were external, and I assumed the JPouch was also. Your explanation helped. I come at it from being diabetic, and having a serious allergie to soybeans. So..I understand some of what you are talking about. I can relate to staying hydrated and the importance of potassium. My system did a huge crash in August. I had lost too much weight too quickly, and it messed with my diabetes meds, it was extremely hot, and I got seriously dehydrated, my potassium levels dropped very low. So it took quite a while to get it all unwound. I am doing much better now, but I can really related to your descriptions of the pre-Jpouch days. Only, I didn't have to do any of this with a toddler.

Deb VanDerMolen. The bump on your middle fingers is probably a callous from holding pens and pencils and writing a lot. I know I have one.

Thank you Ali for explaining about the J pouch. Your explanation was very good, as I had thought a J pouch was a colostomy bag. I don’t have a J pouch but pineapple upsets my stomach as well. Oh my how, funny a fish and chip van. Your Vlogs are amazing, I always enjoy them. I hope you will do Vlogmas. I bought the Greenlampkins Christmas box today, I wish I had gotten the advent calendar as well. Lillia’s nails are so cute!

I think it's brave and tough of you to be so open about it and to explain it well, because unfortunately there is still a taboo on these kinds of things. I also find it striking that we have similarities with regard to the sunken stoma, I also have a sunken and narrowed urinary stoma since I was 15 (almost 50 years old ;) ) At the time they were not yet that advanced in medical science, so they then had my bladder must remove. Nowadays they can also solve it internally. Unfortunately not anymore for me because I have now had 15 correction operations for the narrowing and galvanization, all of which have failed, but I can no longer have surgery for corrections, etc. because my small intestine has become too short. And there is no going back. So we will have to (learn to) live with it. I'm doing well by the way ;) But there is still a taboo about these matters and they need to be broken and that's why I think it's brave and tough of you to be open about it, just like me. it's just part of us and without it we would have a completely different (worse life) so I embrace mine every time despite all the complications. it belongs to me and is part of my life. I also have to take 2 to 3 liters of fluid every day and I also have to pay attention to what I eat and take vitamin D and B12 for my intestines because my small intestine is too short. I hope that you feel better soon and that everything is not too bad and that you can do what you want again. You are a cool girl ;)

I used to have a bump like that on my finger years ago and I think it was from pressure of writing with a pen all the time at school? Now most that I do is laptop based it seems to have gone. I didn't even notice it go... I just looked to see if I still had it when you were comparing fingers with Lilia. Wicked nails by the way Lilia!!!!

Ali, thanks so much for sharing your JJJJourney with us. (sorry, couldn't resist 🥰) I looked up the topic some time back and still never fully understood what you were going through. Your explanation has made it so much easier to understand. I hope the new medicine does its job and makes you feel better and you can get out and enjoy those long fall walks . BTW, love the nails. How did the cake turn out??

We do have to talk poo more! It’s such an important indicator of what our internals are up to. I’ve had 5 perforated ulcers, I have also had a 2 inch split in my stomach both because I was on Voltarol for too many years and have a very thin lining. Then to top it off I had a tumour in my duodenum, which I’ve since have mostly removed along with tumour. More ups and downs with the the cameras than I care to think of and a few blue lights at high speed to get me transfusions. Like pee, the colour is a big sign of how we’re doing. Take more note of what you flush people.

Thank you for sharing this. I didn't know whether to say this or not as I didn't want it to be something extra for you to think about, etc. If it were me I would go to my Dr/Specialist & explain about how poorly & uncomfortable I've been with my periods & the J Pouch. Simply because there could be something else going on. Although not having a J Pouch, a friend of mine had her ovary adhere to the outer wall of her bowel and she was in so much pain. Just a thought to check out & cross off the list if it isn't that!
