  • Having a go with a big ol’ 3.5x3.5m DD Multicam tarp. I love my Superlights and little tarps but I have to say, I really like the coverage of this. It’s over twice the weight of a superlight (1,050g excl. pegs & guy lines) but this isn’t an issue for a local overnighter in the woods. I wouldn’t fancy hauling it up a mountain however
    I also tried a closed-cell foam mat for the first time.. loving this for summer use - so versatile! But not as floofy to sleep on of course. This one is the Thermarest Z-Lite
    As always, I am no expert and always learning so please leave your tips & tricks in the comments for us all 😊
    **Filmed 8th July, before those 2 hot days we had. The woods were lush and green and it wouldn't have been possible to start an accidental fire. Goes without saying, but make sensible decisions and don’t have fires or flames in dry woodlands, long grass or where there is fire risk**
    Thanks so much for watching! Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

    If just a qtr of the worlds population had the peaceful and pleasant outlook on life that this lovely young lady has, not to mention the motivation and encouragement she shares while not breaking her smile, the world would be on the road to becoming a much better place. Life is what you make of it, and its beautiful so enjoy it as its sadly so short.

    2:57 when you cut wood, you want one side of the wood to be on solid raised support and the other side which you are cutting to be free... the way you do it, you bend the wood inwards to the cut and you squeeze the saw and make it way way harder for you to pull and push on the saw...

    Nice little bushcrafty one.
    I've been using a closed cell £20 sleeping mat since Easter this year. The lowest temperature was 4c & I was still fine. They're better than the price suggests imo, & very versatile around camp.
    As you suggest, they would be great in winter to slip under your more wintery mat. Very lightweight.
    Always a sprinkle of magic in your videos.

    • @WildBeare
      @WildBeare  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Mark :) Wow that's impressive! I wonder how low temp-wise I could go on this before getting uncomfortable.. I'm such a cold sleeper, I'm not sure I could go that low with it. I might try it in Autumn to see how it does. My lil green sit mat that I use in the mountains is a foam mat, cheap as anything and that does me great. Thanks for watching my lil viddy, hope you have a lovely week :D 🌿 Claire 🐻

    • @mrljgibson
      @mrljgibson 2 года назад +1

      A useful extra layer is some of the very thin silvered thermal rolls you get from DIY shops that you can just add it under there if it gets any colder. Most things should cope with 4c as long as they insulate you a little from the ground. Trying to sleep while cold is near impossible as your body will hit the emergency button.

I've used her occasionally this summer and in some ways it is better than being at home because she has air conditioning haha. Don’t know that many serious female hikers on here who sit around in skimpy shorts and bra/crop top, this just seems like playing at it to me - the camera set up to watch her ‘waking up’ 😂. I thought i’d found someone i’d enjoy watching but am realising this is more for male views and comments than hiking (more evident in later videos and quite lecherous at times) but it looks like this is a conscious decision going by the posing etc. Why wear skimpy clothing near ticks? (Again in other videos.) Very disappointing, guess it’s not a channel for me - i like ‘proper’ hiking / camping / bushcraft 😊

    Seeing your very large tarp reminded me of my recent trip with a friend. I recently purchased an 8 foot by 10 foot dcf tarp, an upgrade from my 9 foot by 7 foot. The first night was windy and cold and I pitched it low, like yours. The second night was hot and only briefly stormy early in the evening. I pitched it fairly low again and then realized in the morning, as I crawled out, I could've pitched it tall enough to have a comfortable sit or possibly even stand or get dressed under. It seemed huuuuuuuuge. My third night, I pitched it high. It felt like a palace. I actually missed my smaller, cozy tarp. I know the large tarp is versatile and can provide some wonderfully large cover, but I think I'll often choose my smaller, cozy shelter this fall. Anyway, your tarp made me smile, as do all of your videos. Cheers.

      Hi Linda, oooh I was looking at DCF tarps recently, then saw the price of them and looked away 😄 I can totally understand that about the cosiness, I did enjoy the space though. I have the 5x5m too which is an absolute monster!

    I think the deer at 6:15 in your video, is a Chinese Water Deer. I used to always put my tarp over the structural ridge line, but now with my DD tarp I just use three small carabiners to clip it to the prussic knots on the ridge line, underneath it. It is much easier than trying to throw the tarp over it, especially in a breeze

    The larger DD Tarps are great. I have a 4.5x3 which I use when there's two of us. It feels bombproof compared to the superlight range, alas they feel pretty sturdy too, and so since I splurged out for the Superlights, I've not taken the regulars out at all. I should probably sell them 🧐.
    Thanks for taking us along with you once again ❤

    Lovely little setup and camp out Claire.! he noise you heard that you seemed unsure of I believe was a fox. They have many vocalizations. The nice thing with that Z-lite is you can fold so that it doubles the thickness for just your torso area which is really the only place you'll need the padding and insulation this time of year. With that large ground sheet your using you shouldn't be dragging your legs through the forest duff. Plus if you use the Snugpak Jungle bag instead of the blanket you can zip up the bottom half for a foot box to keep your legs and feet warm and use the top section like a blanket or a quilt. ;-) If I might be bold to make another suggestion, I'd suggest that when sawing wood on the ground like that and using a log for support that you hang one end of the piece being cut over the log and saw from the side that allows gravity to assist you with the cut. When sawing wood as you did in the video with one end on the log and the other end on the ground and sawing the wood between the ground and the log it is a good way for the saw to bind in the cut and those Silky's are VERY brittle and subject to snapping blades. I own three of them and once let someone use one while I observed. Just as I was voicing my concerns about their sawing technique, which I knew was going to bind the blade, I heard the dreaded "tink" of a broken blade. ;-) You're ROCKING it with your skills and wild camping!
