New Evernote Tasks = Maybe a Bad Idea

  • When I look at Federico's recent tweet, all I can see is #Evernote #Tasks being converted into just another tasks manager app. Honestly, I am not convinced that's a good idea.

Tags in tasks would be very useful! Also, the full screen is a great idea!

    Yes, I completely agree!
Projects are unnecessary, it's better to add tags.
I also don't understand why they leave the red flag and add priorities separately. There is already a red flag, you can add yellow and green, for example.
And it would be great if they did (in my opinion, it would be great):
    - Subtasks
    - Ability to set a duration for a task
    - Integration of tasks into the calendar (so that they are visible there)
+ I have long seen the request to be able to insert tasks into the table

I think description and tags would be useful for tasks. Yes a task is in a notebook but when I look at a task list a short clarification if needed would be good to see without navigating out of tasks to the notebook.

I strongly concur with the need for task-level tags. I would suggest a sub-tag, in which a task inherits the tags of its note, but also has its own tag. Then tasks from multiple notes in multiple notebooks which have a common context, such as "hardware store" or "boat yard" could be collected to run errands from many notebooks at the same time.
I think there is a place for flags, but I would expand it to only a few distinct levels.
The distinction between tags and flags is that tags could map "many to many"--each task could have many tags, and each tag has many tasks; but a flag would only map "one to many", so that each task has a single flag, either "waiting", "ready", "urgent", "deferrable", "someday", or something of the sort.
When tasks were first mentioned in Evernote, I tried to use them, but I found they often became buried in notes and skipped. Today, I use todoist to track my tasks, but it's easy to lose the information I gain about a task in todoist without bringing it back to Evernote for long-term storage and retrieval. Please continue to advocate for these ideas!
Incidentally I agree with your deprecation of the term "project", and "priority". The terms are overloaded with confused meainings that are not always clear.

in case you follow the "GTD - get things done" idea, project could make sense to define a higher goal/task you want to achieve while the information and the different tasks for this "challenge" might be distributed in different notebooks and stacks.
But I agree, this could also be achieved with "tags".
Saying this .... I would love the option to use queries like in Obsidian, e.g. create a page for one of my "projects" and list all notes with a specific tag as list. Currently I add the links manually ..,.

I really don't see the problem. Tags would be nice. And description is a must. Projects would be a great solution because notebooks do not always represent the areas you use for tasks.

I feel that there is an issue with both the current UI and available meta data that exists in Tasks. All four of the suggested changes sound good to me.
Perhaps tags would address this but I think that having a more 'first class' option as part of the Tasks feature would be a benefit, and take people closer to how they typically operate in a task app
The #1 thing for me to improve MY experience with Evernote would be to improve the backlinking experience. I'm frequently using internal note links, but having that process closer to automated, like what happens in other apps when you enter double-brackets [[, would be incredible

Yep. Tags for tasks has been on my wish list from the beginning. By default, you could have the task inherit the tags of its note, but then also be able to override that and add additional tags only to the task. I already have tags for projects and priorities, so it just makes sense.

    I agree 100% with you.
I prefer enable tags for tasks instead of project ou priority.
About description, maybe if Evernote enable put some links and another information, we can use a task with full information without needing see the note for information complementary of tasks

You are SO RIGHT! I don't use many tags, but I see the value and simplicity with tasks for tasks. Priority-->p1, p2, or whatever system you desire, no need for flags, just add a special tag. Project-->Notebook as you correctly pointed out. No need to add complexity, add flexibility instead! EN is not PM software, but more like "PM light".

Exactly. As I said in a recent article, this proposed new Evernote Tasks seems to me like opening a can of worms. When we least expect, Evernote will be investing time and efforts to build a standalone Tasks app. If you are interest, you find the links to the article below.

Is the use of a title like ‘projects’ there for those familiar with other to do apps? Just another way to do something if you want it. I like the idea of projects as my notebooks are more areas of my life or areas of work are cover more than one ‘project’. I can see your reasoning, but I think it will be a helpful addition for some and just ignored by others.

  • @antcooper

I agree on the Tags (already commented on the X thread about it too). And I think you're right to remove Priority, flags etc. I can create my own versions of these using Tags (not forgetting that you can nest Tags too). Then you can add a Tag to the sidebar or filter by it to see things that are Important or perhaps something like Errand or Family. I do think that a description line would be useful. It is possible to move Tasks between notes, but the context doesn't move with it. Also from my OCD point of view, I prefer not having a break in a task list to add text in

I use tags for projects and for Notebook and tags voor gtd-context. Filtering on stack, notebook and tags are essential.

  • @DonCovin

One of my biggest complaints is that tasks are "notes" or they are note-dependent and I hope they get away from that. I want my tasks independent of the notebooks. Many of my tasks have nothing to do with any notes and do not require association with a note. Flags or priority keeps it simple... Tags can get unruly and a simple structure like flags or priority is an easy way to filter tasks.

Honest question. If that's the case, why not use a more powerful and dedicated to tasks app like Todoist? If you are an Office or Workspace user, Microsoft and Google also have options that you don't have to pay for.

The tags feature has always been awkward for me since it doesn't fit the flow I used for some many years before they added it. I agree that having more space for the task view would be a good idea. I also agree that a new 'projects' organization metaphor would probably be pointless and confusing. We already have Notebooks that would work. This would be an unnecessary complication. Personally I'm using notes to organize groups of tasks together (e.g. a note for all my home tasks, and another for my work tasks, etc) -but that is me. Notebooks should work for that purpose.
I disagree about adding tags to tasks however. I think that breaks the current behavior / expectations to much. The task is already in a note, and that note has tags. It would be awkward to have tags applied to different things or different tags on the note and the task (that is in the note). Also what would happen if I searched for tag:theTag? Would the results like show tasks along side notes in the note list? In my option it would be too confusing.
Descriptions are another 'extra' thing - another thing to complicate / bloat the feature set.
What I want and have been suggesting for years is the ability to add a connected list to the tag (bullet, number, checklist). This list should behave exactly like nested lists do today. You can drag and drop the parent and everything moves together. With new expand and collapse you could collapse them up to save space. A connected bullet list would let you add a 'description' as the first bullet. You could add bullets for note links (something you can't do with tasks today). Or you could make an attached checklist and treat them as subtasks.

I'd rather Evernote focus on time-blocking, being able to drag tasks/notes onto their calendar to co-exist with you calendar events. That's the burgeoning productivity space right now. Oh, and Evernote please change the mobile home screen back to the old one.

It looks like that's what's happening. Honestly I don't like that direction and I don't know if the small team that is now in charge of the development will be able to keep up with so many features and compete with the apps from large companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google etc.
