This is my third episode of a video series I've been wanting to do called: Will it Work?
In this series I take certain Sony camcorders (VX1000, VX2000, VX2100, VX700, PD150, PD170, PD100, PDX10, TRV900, TRV950, FX1, FX7) that I purchase from ebay, craigslist, offer up, etc that are listed as parts/not-working/used and test to see if in fact that maybe they do actually work, or might function well enough to be usable.
These camcorders have always held a very special place in my heart. Coming from a skateboard background these are the camcorders that I would always see the filmers using in the videos but I could never afford in the late 90's to early 2000's. So now in 2022 these camcorders have become semi-affordable, at least compared to what they used to cost. It's been cool to be able to obtain some of these camcorders, clean them up, fix some issues and pass along to people that still want to use this style of camcorder.
In this episode specific, my son and I are going to test out a HDR-FX1 that I got off of Mercari for a final price of $83.45 with tax. The seller had this item listed as parts/not working and said that it would not power on. The seller had this camcorder originally listed for over $200, when I saw the price drop to $60 I figured the accessories that it came with were probably worth about that price. So I decided to gamble on this one and hopefully I might get lucky with it, but we will see!

Wow, what a great find. Still shocked with this one!

Good find guys.
Works.well.
I now.have the model.after this one which is fully professional digital.
I’ve done a few uploads with mine. It’s a true 16:9 unit, it’s not fake stretching of 4:3. It’s the first HDV unit from 2004 and was a massive seller and cost a lot new. I’ve had mine since 2018 and love it. I only use it in HD recording.
Thanks for the input and clarification. Yea this is a super sick camera. Thankfully the eyepiece is broken or I would be tempted to keep it lol!
bro, help me, i just got a new fx1e and i have to use the recorder, which one do you use?
@@ebalai_na_borde It records to tape. then I use the FireWire output on the camera to plug it into my Imac.
@@epicchris1985 thanks
the cinema is yours, great purchase!
This is sick 👏🏾👏🏾
Thx dude appreciate that 🤙
Mine still works!
Awesome, it sucks that fx1's are notorious for the tape compartment failing. I've had 3 or 4 and they've all been bad in some way.
Id aim to get some firewire/solid state addon sometime as i know the tape mechanism is the weak point, still love the camera.
@@scottesplin4426 Exactly, I have a couple focus enhancement recorders (one hd, and the other compact flash) for that very reason...they are super cool. But yea the FX1 is a rad camera.
Hola ! Está cámara tiene hdmi? Puedo transmitir en livestreaming en 1080x720 en RUclips con obs ? Gracias !
Next to the XHa1 this is the cheapest and best 3CCD camera you can buy
Yea this camcorder really surprised us with its quality and versatility. If the eyepiece weren't broke I would have been really tempted to keep this one.
That's sick! what would be the best fisheye for that camera?
I don't think it's any question that Century Optics makes the best (fisheye) lens in terms of quality/performance, but they're at a premium price. Personally I think the best budget fisheye is the Opteka. So, if price is not a concern look for a Century, but if it is...consider the Opteka. We use an Opteka on our vx2000 and so far I'm totally happy with it.
I have the same camcorder, i just buy it! I dont record anything yet, but maybe in a week i record something!!
I really like this camcorder, the ability to record in HD and SD seems like it would be beneficial for skateboarding. Let me know when you get some footage recorded and uploaded I'll take a look! Thanks for the comment!
I have a question regarding the camera, does it have the possibility to record in 4/3? Or does it only record in panorama? It sounded to me that it was possible to put a mode with two bars on both sides, to take into account the composition if you recorded in 4/3 and thus not leave things out of frame
I hope I answer this correctly. Did you happen to see the montage starting at 21:36? In that montage we recorded HD which was 16:9 and we recorded SD in 4:3 with black bars on the left and right. The camcorder can also record 4:3 in panorama. Sorry I did not show video of this. It's interesting because the SD in panorama did not appear to be stretched to fill the frame. It almost looked like SD in 16:9 but I'm pretty sure that is not possible. I don't know. I will need clarification on that as well.
@@thedadtris If it has been clear, but the camera when you record in dv mode both in the viewfinder and on the screen appears as 4/3 right? that is, the image appears cropped or with bars. If I have seen the full video, wu-tang hahahaha, but I thought you had cut the video, although it would seem strange to me
It is that I expected that when recording with this camera everything would be panoramic, without the possibility of doing it in 4/3, but since there was the possibility of recording in dv, I thought that I would only record in wide screen, but with less quality and not in 4/ 3
I could be wrong but it appears to me that this is true dv and 4:3. By the look of the footage do you think that is correct? There is a setting in the menu that you can select to record 4:3 in full screen or normal 4:3. That's why I was really impressed with this ability. It's sort of like having a vx or pd and an HD cam all in one.
@@thedadtris That's true, I just also have a sony pdx10p and the one you show in the video, sony hdr fx1, and I'll shoot it all in dv 4/3, since I'm doing a documentary and I'll shoot it in this format. Regards my friend!
Maybe theres not much to share, but have you guys ever thought of doing a video on how you would go about cleaning one these bad boys? I I'd be in to that
What are you trying to clean? Tape compartment, lens....anything specific?
lol just everything. Given that these are old and tend to be grimey, I figured you guys might have some good tips for getting them close to a “like new” state. I just snagged a pd150 for a great price but it’s all around kinda dirty. Idk where to start besides dunking the whole thing in alcohol 😅
Amazing camcorder.. Is it first released in 2004 ?
Yea dude, this thing is awesome! If the eyepiece wasn't broke I would probably keep it, and yes it says it was released in late 2004.
Donde la conseguiste tan barato ?
Mercari

Awesome Congrats! Send me a message on instagram if you have that, or you can email me: amjskateshop@yahoo.com
@@thedadtris I bought this camera on ebay. Can you throw in the cassette with the camera? Thank you.
Whoaa, thanks a lot man! Yep, I will put the tape in the box for you. Did you happen to have any questions on it before I get it packed up to ship?
I sent you a few messages on ebay too.
The Best and cheap on today HDV with very Good picture, I dream about it, and watch web auctiones more and more... I owner of AX-2000, but his picture some soapy and "flat", and also "cinema tones" is lack, not big help for this, (presets "deep of black", "gamma black" is unavailable...) Also Paradox of present days - camcorders HDV/DV cheap and cheap, but the tapes (cassettes) for higher and higher abnormally prices. May be need to use compact recorder with cams... )))
