    I love the fact that Disney didn't outright villainize the grandma. She was someone lost in her own pain and trying to keep her family from going through what she went through. She was in the wrong, but she was still person with a good heart.

      @L2 Sentinel I think it's even more nuanced than saying it's Alma's fault because it's what Mirabel says that finally breaks everything open. Before that she wasn't as bad as Alma but she was not a great sister. She was too focused on her own pain over not having a gift. So much so that she couldn't see how much pain her sisters' gifts caused them. Not as bad as Alma but parallel.
      Which is why the part between both of them is so wonderful, you can hurt your family even though you have the best of intentions. Neither Alma nor Mirabel want to hurt their family but that doesn't change that happened. What matters is figuring out how to fix things when you realise the damage you've caused. Both of them needed to learn the same lesson about expectations and being more supportive to the entire family.

    • @rfresa
      @rfresa 2 года назад +19

      I think Mirabel's gift was always her connection to the house and her leadership and empathy. She didn't get a special room because the whole house belonged to her. She and her Abuela both had this gift; they were the only ones shown to understand what Casita wanted and directly tell it what to do. Most of the time they wanted the same things and it wasn't a problem, but when bad feelings grew too strong between the two of them, the house started to break apart.

    • @jcompton8507
      @jcompton8507 2 года назад +7

      @@rfresa I always took it as the candle and the house were...shall we call it the"spirit"?...of Abuelo Pedro. And it started breaking apart when the family started falling apart. That's why the vision Bruno was given was that Mirabel needed to give people hugs. But Abuela's cold words to Mirabel after she and Isabella finally had their breakthrough in their relationship was the "straw in the stack that broke the camel's back" for the Encanto. And the family and the town needed to hit rock bottom before they could build back stronger.

    • @kapilakhare2936
      @kapilakhare2936 2 года назад +4

      @@cupguin mirabel never hurt the family lmfao. Her pain wasn't just over having a gift, but over not being accepted BECAUSE she didn't have a gift. She tried to accept it but it was difficult when everybody keeps reminding you. Encanto is about dysfunctional famillies and abuse,and Mirabel is the "black sheep" of the family. If you're blaming her for being sad over her own struggles you're missing the point of the movie.

      @L2 Sentinel THIS!! Alma had the whole community. I believe the most difficult conversation was between Alma and the leaders of the community where she had to rely on their trust in their miracle as a way to escape the violence and prosper.

    I feel like many of us in latinoamerica have the same generational trauma about violence. I haven't suffered directly, but I'm Chilean and 30 years ago my country was in a dictatorship and my parents both went through a lot, specially my dad who ended up being a political prisoner. And God knows what they did to prisioners. I was in my mid 20s when I went to therapy and she made me realize how much it had affected me to learn what my dad went through, it was really a second hand trauma. My dad had to write it down for testimony and evidence a couple of decades ago and I found and read it when I was far too young, it messed me up for a long time.
    And I'm lucky enough to still have my dad, he survived and worked to be a good dad and partner. Many didn't survive, or weren't able to live healthily after the horrors they survived. And like Chile, all southamerica has gone through so much shit. I think I love our cultures full of color, dancing and music bc it's full of light and happiness despite what the stereotype is. And I'm so happy that with Coco and now Encanto they're showing to families what we love and cherish about our countries. Culture and good representation is beautiful ❤️

    Thank you so much for giving us a Colombian perspective on this movie. I'm not surprised that you cried so much, since you have a personal connection to the story, but it has touched so many millions of people with its relatable theme of generational trauma. If only everyone could be healed as Abuela Alma and her family were healed. I'm glad to be reminded of how beautiful Colombia is, because you're right - we're shown only the bad side, and not even a clear view of the real problems, but only a limited view. Every reaction I watch makes me see the movie a little differently. It's like Colombia is Bruno - misunderstood, bad-mouthed, and isolated, but actually full of joy and humour and kindness.

    I'm Colombian and I watched it in Japan... I cried so much! I'm the only Colombian in this city as far as I know, and I never thought to see to many things of my country in such accurate way... The grandma's style reminds me so much to my grandmother who is gone... Isabela reminds me of my older sister, I'd love to hug my mom like Mirabel does with Julieta, I'd give everything for a Sunday's morning eating for breakfast arepas, tamal y chocolate with my whole family, my father died the last year Corona and I couldn't return for the measures against the virus... I've not gone back for almost 4 years (the first 2 years for my master's course, The trip is so long and I though I could go back after my graduation on 2020's March, but when I had my ticket my country closed the borders, I got a job here more responsibilities, and I hope to finally go home at the beginning of the next year)....so you can't imagine how grateful and deeply moved I was watching this movie, to listen words in Spanish, to see wax palms, coffee plants, traditional dishes, tejo, Mongui's soccer balls, Caño cristales, my father's hometown traditional dress in Mirabel... My grandparents also had to leave their town and start from 0 near the capital, and generations had advanced slowly, my siblings and I have had the chance to get education etc because of them and our parents, because of their hard work... I just keep crying listening the mixture of joropo and bambuco during the credits and that beautiful message in Spanish "en agradecimiento al pueblo de Colombia" while showing small drawings of wayuus, el carnaval de Barranquilla, la catedral de Bogotá.... And so on... I got Disney+ to watch it in English and Spanish... I just love it, I'm used to be told stupid questions about drug and narcos by other foreigners and when they do it the first tI've they know me I just cut relations with them, but those are the only things they know because of news, Netflix and Hollywood and they have not has the curiosity to "see more" so, I'm absolutely happy that Disney showed so much more and invite people to not just judge by stereotypes.

    This was really lovely to watch! Very much enjoyed you reacting to the Spanish dub. ❤️ As you probably knew, both “Colombia Mi Encanto” and “Dos Oruguitas” were also sung in Spanish in the original English dub. What you might not have known is that Abuela, Felix, Julieta, Pepa, and Mariano had the same Spanish and English voice cast. I love it in animation when multilingual actors get to play their roles in multiple dubs! ❤️

    This movie represents so many of us. My parents left El Salvador in the 80’s because of a 12 year civil war that ended in 1992. They went through so much here in the US because they were undocumented and didn’t speak English. I’m very grateful for everything they’ve done and all the sacrifices they made. But just like the movie, they do put certain pressures and expectations that are hard to live up to.

    In the song "We don't talk about Bruno": at first watch, Isabella's part seem out of place as everyone is complaining about bad visions but hers seem to be something good. Even her background music seems to break the pace/mood of the song. Only after hearing her side that we find out that her part in the song isn't that far off from the other's concerns as she is also complaining about the visions because she is sick of being typecast as the perfect golden child.

      Yup, it’s very heartbreaking, it’s almost as if ironically Bruno’s vision for her was the worst. She had in her head for years that she would have a happy life in the end, and since all she wants to do is to make Abuela proud, she didn’t even question or consider if she could break away from the things that her family because she might not want them. She doesn’t know herself or her powers before her song. Just the persona that made her family and the town proud of her.

      " Even her background music seems to break the pace/mood of the song." Also each character breaks into their own chorus around the table and Bruno's vision. This was intentionally done as in music, thats what the word "Madrigal" means. Its very well done.

      I actually got a different reading from Isabella's part. Near the climax of the song, Isabella can be heard repeating "I'll be okay" to herself as she prepares for the engagement dinner. I took that to mean that even though she wasn't feeling it with Mariano, her uncle's vision for her was something she was holding onto with hope, because she knew that eventually she would have the life of her dreams. I think it was one of the few things keeping her sane in her high-pressure perfectionist life.
      That said, I'm not disagreeing with your read. Just offering an alternative perspective! I think your read is a very good one as well.

    • @jasond2334
      @jasond2334 2 года назад +8

      Isabella's "Life of my dreams" is not the one she's living in the middle of the story. It one day will be. And her power will grow like the grapes (not like the flower, which would have been the obvious rhyme with "power"), and on climbing vines, too. Bruno saw what else Isa could do and be.

    • @kristinw2600
      @kristinw2600 2 года назад +4

      @@jasond2334 Did he? Bruno may not have known what Isabela wanted - how could he, if Isabela herself didn't know? We know he saw Mariano's proposal, because he told Dolores the man of her dreams would be betrothed to another. If Bruno couldn't see through the mask to know Isabela didn't actually want that life...
      But even if he did, Isabela may not have known that. She may have been saying that she hated Bruno's vision for her as much as everyone else, because oh look the life of her dreams would be hers and was this it? Was she trapped, with no way out? But of course, that's something you would never pick up on the first time you watch the movie.
      This movie has so many layers, so many twists, so many small details going on. Everyone involved in this movie did a truly amazing job.

    I’m the offspring of all-American and all-Colombian families, so it made me really happy to see such an amazing movie being made the bridged my two worlds together. I knew this movie would be very special for you, but I didn’t know it would effect you in the sense that it was the first time you saw positive representation of Colombia instead of just the violence there. I want to let you know that I’ve lived in Colombia two times in my life and I never felt the sense that there was any danger around me. I’m fact, I was surprised when I later found out that Colombia suffers from violence. I had a happy time living there and I thought you should know that since you’re so effected by people only knowing the bad sides of your country. Every country has its dark aspects but you should never let it discourage you. I’m visiting my family in Colombia right now and I’m having a wonderful time as always.
    Don’t ever give up on your home country. I know you guys face harsh realities to this day but I also know that Colombia will recover from all of it stronger than ever because your country is beautiful and resilient. With all the positive recognition you guys are getting with increased tourism and a beloved Disney movie, it’s only a sign of what’s to come. So don’t give up, because it will get better.

    It's so heartbreaking how that one scene from the crystal-like river hits home for a Filipino like me. When the Marawi Siege/attack happened here, panic made me and my mom part involuntarily. It was so scary cause I thought I was never going to be reunited with her. Turns out, she was stuck alonh with the other residents in the house just where we were parted by the terrified crowd that was fleetig from our home, and all of them were discovered by the men in black schoal. When I saw her name in om the "listahan", I straight up cried and didn't care about the people looking at me.
    Ay,I wanted to hug her and tell her that I was sorry for being the worst son. The feeling of longing and overwhelming grief makes me cry even to this day. But I suppose I'm a little relieved that this happened to me and to my close friends and neighbors.

    The visceral look of pain on Abuela's face during Dos Oruguitas is just devastating - and I still cry every time I see it. But.... I'm glad they showed that truth, compared to the fairytale version they had at the beginning of the story.
    And I'm glad you found representation in this story. It's something that everyone should find, but many never do.

    Best reaction ever -- and really the musical numbers were so much better in español.
    I thought they rushed the end after the casita disaster, but they were running out of time.
    I am sure there is practically a whole movie in there where each member of the family has to come to terms
    with their being "normal" again and how they let their powers stunt their emotional growth and ignore the glaring
    cracks ( a bit in the nose Lin-Miranda!) in the family relationships. Also there could be a bit more from the townspeople's perspective, and some songs by them, etc.
    I like how told the backstories of the village and the romance of Consuela and Pedro with a show-don't-tell montage, tho.
    All the "gifts" were supposed to be to protect the family, but that kind of got swept away, probably in the rewites, too bad. Each
    member had a part to play, and that could've been some nice storytelling, but maybe that will come in for a possible sequel.
    The internal threat of disonancia, secretos, mentiroso, recriminaciones, castigo, trauma, etc. was the Villain for this movie -- very psychological for a Disney film.
    Your reaction shows you have great love of your country, and great pain and sorrow for its troubles.

      My problem with this movie is that it should have been a series to explore each character better..they are all very distinguished and charismatic,but they all feel rushly and superficially explored because there's not enough time in just 1 movie(plus every single song is basically an exposition). But I get why this can still be particularly emotional for someone close to that history and culture.
      P.S. The grandma's name is Alma.🦋

    Ya ví la película como 20 veces (no exagero, tengo una hija de 4 años) y en todas he terminado con lágrimas en los ojos. Pero con tu vídeo lloré más que con la película, porque aunque soy de México, entiendo perfecto esa realidad en la que mucha gente honesta y de buen corazón es asesinada u orillada a dejar su hogar, en la que por unos cuantos h... de p... (delincuentes y políticos, valga la redundancia), el resto del país es estigmatizado, perseguido, viviendo con miedo, cuando la mayoría solo queremos trabajar, vivir, colaborar, prosperar y amar. Un abrazo a todos los hermanos latinoamericanos que sufrimos está triste realidad en la que nos mantienen divididos entre izquierdas y derechas, liberales y conservadores, socialistas y capitalistas, globales y nacionalistas... Espejismos de una dicotomía inexistente, pues solo queremos, repito, trabajar, colaborar, disfrutar, vivir y sobretodo AMAR.

I wonder if you noticed that ajiaco is what they were having at the proposal dinner or that huevos pericos con arepa y empanadas is what they were having for breakfast. My grandparents lived in a town and house similar to the ones depicted in the movie. Everything felt so familiar...I have never been a plant person but until now I cannot stop marveling at the decorating plants in Casita, as well as around town, being the same kind of those I grew up with. I LOVE your raw emotions! I am not colombian, but grew up in a multigenerational home, which sadly passed away after our grandma passed away, so this cuts deep.
    I think hugging Isabel was just the first step of the vision. Isabel looks like Alma when she was a young woman, and is Alma's favourite because she is the perfect young woman. She could have the life Alma dreamed of when she was young and in love with the love of her life. She said herself, that she thought to leave a different life.
    That's why I think the vision ACTUALLY shows Mirabel hugging Alma's broken heart which is still grieving for her husband. She is still wearing black, 50 years after his death. Her holding the family too tight, stopping them from deviating is her way of showing love, even though this isbreaking everything. Mirabel helps her healing, and that is beautiful. 😍😭😭😭
    I still think even though the whole casita is her power now, as the main door is "her door" (also I think the door didn't diasapear, it fused with casita), she still should get moved out of the nursery. Maybe not a magical djungle, but something of her own. Same as Bruno, he cannot be send back to the tower of sand or the walls.
    Rebuilding the house should come with improvements, not repetition.

    As a person from the USA who grew up in the 80s, I understand what you're saying. For years Colombia has been used as a call word for drug cartels and guerilla warfare in our movies and television. It's a pity, because the country is full of beauty, both in nature and in the people. I'm sorry that that became a thing. Hopefully, Encanto will, ahem, open some eyes.

    I stumbled upon this video after watching dozens of Encanto reaction videos because I'm obsessed with this movie. This is the first one with a reaction that was similar to my own. I am not Colombian, but my people also suffered displacement and war that generated a similar intergenerational trauma. This movie hit me so friggin hard, I couldn't stop crying. Some of the songs still make me cry every time I listen to them. I love abuela Alma, she reminds me of my own grandmother, also displaced and suffered immense loss, and became stoic. Never spoke about her experience. The trauma was carried over to my mom and then to me. I am trying so hard not to pass it down to my daughter. Your emotional response here made me emotional again, because I felt what you felt. It hit much closer to home for you, and I can't imagine how deeply it must have affected you, given it affected me so hard and I'm not even Colombian! The trauma of displacement and war is very specific, it's very distinct. If you know it, you know it. If you don't, it's impossible to explain or compare to any other kind of trauma. Survivors' guilt, the fear of losing your home, and that hyper vigilance that accompanies it, they're all so hard to explain. Sorry for this rant, I loved your video and I'm happy I watched it. Both parts, lol

I use youtube to try to get a different perspective of different countries and cultures. I'm sorry that Colombia is shown in a bad light, but my heart hurts with you. I loved this movie for a number of reasons. I loved all the attention to details and cultural references, like how she pointed to the present with her lips, or how her dad said “miércoles.” I also think it was good that they showed issues that occur in many Latino families, like how the youngest family member is often blamed for things even when they’re just trying to help, how family members who are perceived as different are ostracized, and the generational trauma of families who survive tragedies.
    I also enjoyed seeing a positive portrayal of Colombia. I’m from Peru and sincerely appreciate how you guys helped us qualify for the 2018 World Cup. I remember watching a Copa America game between Peru and Colombia a few years ago, and even though I was the only Peruvian in a bar full of Colombians, and we lost to you, it was a wonderful experience because the Colombian fans were kind and welcoming.

    A lot of the actors playing the adults in this film not only did the English language speaking roles but then also dubbed in their characters for the Spanish-language release. I was really kind of shocked when I watched this film as it's not about magic, but about trauma and how it gets passed down in families. The true magic is finally being able to heal.

    This movie is extremely meaningful to me. I‘m venezuelan but moved to Switzerland when I was 8 years old. I often feel like a stranger here and often struggle with telling people that I am venezuelan as well. We all know what is going on down there and it‘s the only thing I hear when someone finds out I‘m venezuelan. Nobody talks about the culture, the food, the incredible nature. It‘s allways just the bad and the ugly and I‘m constantly reminded that venezuela is in a very bad place right now, so much that I often feel a subtle feeling of shame. Encanto might take place in colombia but being our neighbor, colombia and venezuela are quite similar when it comes to food, nature, culture. I remember the happiness I felt when I saw the dresses with the flower designs as it reminded me of what my mom used to wear back home. I cried a million times, feeling happiness, homesickness, agony and much more. It‘s by far my favorite disney movie. I need to see if I can find PAN to make some arepas over here.

    I remember how emotional seeing Moana made me. A Disney princess that looks like my mom, seeing boats that look like bangkas and other details I recognized. And Moana's connection to me is less direct. Moana is prehistoric, supposed to represent all Polynesians/Pacific Islanders whereas Encanto is specifically Colombian. I can only imagine how emotional it would be!
    I cried buckets while watching it 😜 and I've been annoying my neighbors for weeks by singing it loudly 🗣️ to my headphones whenever I clean. We don't talk about Bruno and no se habla de Bruno are equally catchy 🎶😁

    So thankful that you were willing to share something so painful and beautiful with us. I found Encanto to be such a beautiful meditation on grief, trauma and loneliness - but I am not Colombian and I think any analysis is incomplete if it decontextualizes it from Colombian experience. "Dos Oroguitas" completely gutted me - but I cannot imagine the pain and beauty it would hold for someone who was watching their own histories reflected in it. What you are doing is SO important. Thank you.

    The music and especially lyrics during the song for Abeula hit much harder on your reaction than all of the other's I've seen because you felt them flow and didn't have to read a translation...thank you for sharing.

    I have never seen your channel before (random youtube suggestion) but seeing your reaction to the fairytale version of the miracle origin told to baby Mirabel in the beginning, I knew you'd just completely crumble during the brutal reality version at the end. Also nice to learn the river is a real and notable place and not just a general-vibe they created.

    I have had none of these experiences and this film makes me cry every time I've watched it. (and it's been many times) So glad that you shared with us the feelings and memories and I hope there is some healing for everyone.
