    What a pearl of wisdom! Your use of small circles in Wing Chun is quite impressive. In addition, admitting that certain aspects of Wing Chun have limitations and require small changes to make more effective is a bold and honest statement. Actually it is refreshing!

    Great video, your view on not being able to block after the trap is the first time I've seen this in Wing Chun! It is a similar message that I've given my kempo students for their checking hands training. I've mentioned your online lessons on my podcast and I'm sharing your link in my next soon to be released kettle bell work book. Keep up the great work Adam.

      True Wing Chun wins on contact. Most practice as if in Chi Sao. Our first touch should feed back to center and off-balance our opponent. We should displace their base. Trapping should always involve breaking their structure.
      Position permits opportunity; balance allows response. We should take both away and maintain our own at all times. Kempo has some similar concepts such as bone-breaking and line-of-sight trickery. It should wed well with Wing Chun.

    Nice! But the little loop at the end of the Lop Sau is in the forms. Its there every time you Huen Sau to a fist and draw it back to the side between every section of the SLT form!! That's also a Lop Sau with a twisting/withdrawing action! ;-)

      To elaborate: We naturally do this very movement in the Huen Sao transition [say the arm is grabbed] to the outside gate [forearm/elbow control].

  • @davidwilliams4837
    @davidwilliams4837 3 года назад +5

    "Crossing" the line [the circle] is absolutely in traditional Wing Chun. The forms show tools not the applications. The problem is practitioners continuously use a hammer on a screw because they don't meditate on the energy, they focus on "empty" movement.
    The best place to be is "beside" the line and to send energy backward, crossing the axis and returning to the opponent's center. Thus, there the idea of spiraling down the line is always present. Siu Nim Tao BEGINS with this concept [crossing arms].
    Chi Sao is an exercise, NOT fighting. While I appreciate your content, it irks me when someone states this sort of thing because, as a 3rd generation Ip Man practitioner, I was taught this stuff as well as knife/weapon disarms from day 1... and these saved my life on multiple occasions. But I was taught applications, [which are seldom taught] from a closed door student. However, if one has faith in the forms, I'm convinced they can uncover these things. Furthermore, Wing Chun also targets pressure points [dummy form in particular]. There are some who know this, but most are taught only movement not energy.
    Wing Chun is a deep well, but our mind is the bucket. If we can't retain the "water", we find nothing to drink. We must first repair the mind [leaky bucket] before condemning the source.

    Gotta question for Mr Adam Chan. Say for instance you're in trapping range because the opponent is defending and it turns into a struggle due to situational changes and something doesn't work so you're forced to go to something else, what are your options that you would use to prevent a trapping situation not to turn into a struggle? In other words, what are the most effecient things to do, to not allow that happen, and if it does happen, what would you do to get around it? I would like a demonstration btw if you don't mine. And i'm only asking this question because I don't see any wing chun instructors addressing this possible scenario.

    Alright, some people are saying that the circle right at the end of lap sau is actually taught in wing chun. Can you show me the video of the master that is teaching it as a technique? No, the huen sao in Siu Lim tao does not count. Like actual translation from form to technique. Thus far, lap sau is either pull straight downwards at an angle towards your hips, forward towards the opponent's body, or just clear just enough to wedge your next punch in. Again, a video of a master teaching the circle at the end of the lap sau.

    • @hiddenpathwingchun5045
      @hiddenpathwingchun5045 3 года назад +1

      Respectfully, I disagree:
      Energy, not movement. Look at Wooden Dummy transitions. Every transition requires circular motion. Wing Chun is not "static". Many martial arts have suffered due to drawn [static] images attempting to show motion, leading to "poses". But motion is merely movement; Wing Chun and other arts are about "energy". MUCH is hidden in the forms. To say the circle is not present is patently absurd as Siu Nim Tao shows tools [not applications] and is meant as a meditation of line, structure, then energy. No Wing Chun technique can or SHOULD look the same because it "conforms" to contact or energy exchange of the opponent. Circular and rotational movement are the entire basis of the system, though hidden from the eye.
      The trouble is people are being taught incorrectly and not taught the more intrinsic elements of the art form. I believe this is true for many other arts as well. Pantomime and empty movement are meaningless. Movement is a RESULT of mindful intention. We must begin humbly with wisdom and by changing how we THINK. Only then can we learn the form as intended. Ip Man understood this. In truth, the greatest Wing Chun is not visible to the eye. Focus over force; energy over movement. We should make our circles so tight they look like lines, and our lines so responsive they become circles.
      People need to stop looking at Chi Sao and at the forms as "fighting" or how Wing Chun fights. They are not. They are examinations of tools and techniques without adaptation or application. This is why people keep using hammers on screws.
      Wing Chun is a deep well, but our mind is the bucket. If we can't retain the "water", we find nothing to drink. We must first repair the mind [leaky bucket] before condemning the source.

      Those who don't understand Wing Chun seem most insistent on defining it. Here you are with snapshot mentality. If one "clears" the line or a limb they will naturally perform this technique in this manner. There are a thousand variations and transitions, all of which are present in the forms but you claim they don't exist.
      It's ridiculous. Next you'll demand proof of a Jut Sao after the Lop. Where in Wing Chun does it "limit" technique? Technique is limited by the individual, not the system.
      This is a false narrative and claim. Of COURSE one can circle.

Which master or even lineage taught this method after a lap sao, as shown exactly by Adam and can I see a video.

      Most of the time people focus on the "latching" aspect of Lap Sao rather than "clearing" the limb. In truth, we're looking to maintain contact which is why most Huen Sao are smaller with little elbow movement [to transition along the line]. I've seen similar movements in flow in the past from many teachers. The older Foshan lineage of Wing Chun emphasizes some "larger" circles [their Huen Sao often circle with elbow movement, for instance] even in the form, if memory serves. If I happen to run across a video focused on this particular aspect, I'll try to respond in this thread with a link.

      All things aside, as they are relative to the situation: a fighter wins, not their art. Each is useful in its own way, and it comes down to the individual's strengths and weaknesses as well as how they can utilize and adapt what they learn.
      Which is better for any given person depends entirely on who they are - even from a scientific, objective standpoint, this holds true.

      Neither is better or worse. Do u want a car or a motorcycle neither is better its a preference thing. Whatever u can find better teachers for do that. Learning jkd will automatically edit your wing chun when u learn it. Provided u got to a decent level of trapping in jun fan gung fu. Start jkd. Then do jun fan trapping sets until u get pretty good. 5 10 hours maybe then learn wing chun. You could do more jun fan. Mostly just read the tao of JKD. Then it will kinda happen without u understanding what or how. Even if u never did jun fan gung fu you would have your wing chun changed if you got good at JKD. Provided your school actually trapped. Taught myself jkd you dont need a teacher. You do learn faster and helps not make mistakes but its not hard to understand the stance footwork principles. It's hard to get then good to where your not bound by them anymore. Check out new england jkd if you want to learn it. Its on youtube. Ted wong lineage is good. Dan inosanto lineage is good but not all the things he says. He almost purposely leads people to not do jkd. Mostly people he has trained are high level. He doesnt openly teach alot of JKD. I see his point at the same time. Bonus points if u look up Leo fong.
