I purchased a '24 automatic trd offroad long bed (bronze oxide) about a month ago. It currently has less than 1000 miles. I'm experiencing a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st when coming to a complete stop. I only seem to notice it when I'm braking very lightly. No other shifting issues, jolting, noises, etc. The truck is great except for the downshift from second to first when coming to a complete stop. The truck isn't jolting forward or shifting after the truck is stopped. This happens before the stop. It just feels like the truck won't come to a full stop smoothly. My truck it outside the tsb range, but I'm not confident there isn't an issue. I feel like a new truck should be stopping smoothly, without any noticeable sensations coming from the transmission. I'm wondering if you've experienced anything similar? Is it normal to feel the downshift from 2nd to 1st? It's bothering me to my core knowing the issues that've been showing up in the '24 tacomas. Thank you for your time.
@teamoildrop It's subtle enough to where I'm the only one who can feel it happen. Other passengers don't feel anything. It also doesn't make any noise. I only feel it in my foot on the brake, so it's pretty subtle, but it's there. It's subtle enough to where I want to say it's a normal thing, but noticeable enough to make me question it.
@@andrewzavaleta3026 in this case I’d just monitor for a while. A felt downshift to 1st is not uncommon in a new transmission. Now if it doesn’t disappear over the next 1000 miles or gets worse at all, that’s worth an appointment to me. I noticed a similar feeling on the coldest of mornings when my truck was brand new but it’s now gone.
It’s the OEM bed cover from Toyota. Sorry no codes or anything, I had to pay the coin at a dealership. After tax it’ll run you ballpark of 1200. BUT it is EXTREMELY nice.
Hi, I have a 2018 Tacoma. I noticed the exhaust on your 4th gen comes out the driver's side. The 3rd gen goes out the passenger side. Can you tell any difference with the sound?
Great review! I think I can fully agree on every point you made here. I’ve got just over 6,000 miles on mine so far. I’ve done two oil changes, and yes, it is easy (even without the fumoto valve). Interesting about the air vents. I haven’t noticed if I have that issue, but I rarely have on full blast. Hopefully they can address that for you. Btw, you’re a shill 😂… just kidding. Awesome video!
I honestly may be imagining things with it… I need to dive a bit deeper. With that being said I ask you blindly buy everything on this channel, heck, get ANOTHER 4th gen 😆 I am a Toyota puppet, bought and paid for 😆
@@teamoildrop ha! I knew it 😜. Side question for you or anyone else who may have an opinion… I’m trying to decide on swapping the stock wheels (trd off road) with the trailhunter wheels and staying the stock size (pretty sure the trailhunter has 265/70 r18s), or getting a bronze colored aftermarket 17” wheel and going for the 285s like you’ve got, and now I can’t decide! I think 285s on the trailhunter wheels will almost definitely rub on the stock suspension, and I really don’t wanna do a cheapo spacer lift. What do y’all think?? Choices choices. The 285s you’ve got look so good, but the factory wheels are kind of meh in my opinion (don’t hate em though, just kinda wish they went all black like the prerunner’s have). My buddy just got his prerunner finally and I wanna steel his wheels now 🤣
I bought the 4th gen knowing my kids will be out of the house in a few years. Back seat compared to a Ranger is cramp but the wife and I will be just fine up front. Noticed the hood flutter when I too delivery. They could have added a few more crease in it to stiffen. Speakers are not immersive meaning I can tell the sound is coming from the front even though the setting is centered. I also have the hybrid version. Surprisingly it get worse mpg then just the turbo. I’m running about 19/20 mpg combined stock without the apron.
@@appleztooranges man… many variables. I would personally wait until at least the 2025 before I considered doing this. After a thorough test drive and heart to heart decision.
Considering upgrading my 08 to a 3rd gen 2023 200miles. Last of the last. Or hold on to my 2nd gen and wait a few years on the 4th gens to figure themselves out. Or go 3rd gen Tundy. Thoughts?
@@rapture333 then if you don’t have kids to carry I personally would go Tacoma. your budget says 4th gen, but that 3rd gen 2023 depending on trim is probably only 3-5k cheaper than a similar trim 4th gen. Since you don’t sound in a hurry I’d let the 2025 models hit and find out what tweaks were made. If you’ve got kids… tundra lol
If I could have my way, Toyota would make the Xtracab in a TRD Off-Road trim. Since that's apparently not in the cards, your set up will have to be my fallback. I absolutely need a six foot bed. I need the long bed, but not a back seat. The SR and SR5 trim Xtracabs are a joke, and would cost a fortune to upgrade. You have done the sensible mods like I like, and not over the top crazy and unnecessary mods. Well done. My dealer is sitting on over 120 2024 Tacomas, so I will wait a few weeks and see if Toyota releases 2025 models just in case they make and trim changes.
My 5th gen 4Runner’s hood wabbles at higher speeds and it is made out of steel, I don’t how different it is from the new Tacoma but I just wanted to point that out.
@@javierramos9795 hmm my 5th gen runner didn’t wobble. Does a small area wobble like the new truck or the whole thing? If the whole thing you can adjust the twist knobs that should be near the headlights. That should eliminate the play.
First, great color choice, I'm biased as I have the same. I agree with the lane tracing it's great. We just took our first road trip to SC from FL it's a 7 hwr drive each way my 15 yo ride in the back and didn't complain about comfort. I have to say I'm 5'8" my wife is 5'3" my son is about 5'8" as well so take my testimony of comfort for what it is. I'm thinking I'll have to get one of those valves for the oil change as the way the oil pan is the oil shoots out and hits the cross member and makes a mess. My biggest complaint is if I'm listening to a RUclips video through AA if you touch the volume knob the input changes to RUclips music and starts playing the last song it was stopped on, I looked everywhere for a setting but can't find anything. Also the tire pressure screen changing to something different after startup is slightly annoying. Great video.
I've found that if you have spotify, make sure you turn off the option to play the same sounds on all speakers. This made the center speaker less annoying and overall enjoyable.
A heads-up. Toyota issued a bulletin regarding a transmission problem with 2024 Tacomas. There is a fix for it, but someone is filing suit anyway claiming damage to the transmission can occur that is not addressed by the fix.
Have you sat in the passenger seat and tried the passenger side grab handle ? That thing is ridiculous, Also what are your thoughts on the shifter size ?
@@TRDCaves I don’t mind the shifter, I kinda like it. Gives it a sense of power 🤷♂️ The passenger handle is a bit funny. In an earlier vid where my dad and I are testing a 4th gen he was confused by it as well 😆
This is my first tacoma. i agree with on on all topics, but some pros are meh. Like i have that wobble on my trailhunter, doesnt bother me. maybe truck owners are bunch whining little girls (im not targeting you)? like is there anything perfect in this life? Before buying trailhunter i researched quite a bit, the most concerning thing was its 4 cylinder...anyway im glad i did my own research and didnt listen whining idiots on forums. I got 1k miles on it and did the oil change then took it to Uwharrie and did like 2 easy and 4 moderate trails... no challenge at all. love the truck and hope there will be no issues. Thanks for your videos
Excellent analysis. Of course, though, the '900' lb. gorilla in the room is reliability, which becomes a factor when you have some real miles on the truck. Aside from the predictable bugs associated with the advent of a new generation, for me, what is a concern is the turbo. It's pretty much common knowledge that turbos decrease the life of an engine due to increased pressure inherent to its operation. There are driving habits that can mitigate the problem to some extent, but, I mean, you don't want to be a neurotic when you drive. So, especially since it's a turbo, your analysis will be interesting once you start climbing in mileage.
To this I ask, what do you think of the very successful ecoboost line from ford? The most common truck on the road has been turbo’d for north of a decade with countless high mileage examples. Additionally, I take a little solace knowing this engine was first in the Highlander, although not in this exact configuration. So the tech is not new. Finally, I hope… HOPE… that Toyota got it right this time because every new 4Runner and Tacoma on the road will soon have this engine 😆 😬
@@teamoildrop Interesting that it was first in the Highlander; that's a positive. As far as the Ford Eco-Boost, aside from anecdotal information, I wonder what the data is overall, as, like I said, the increased engine pressure is not a desired condition, but at least there are ways to mitigate the risks through driving habits.
My wife had a Corolla Hatch in Bronze Oxide. Beautiful color and Chemical Guys CWS20764 wash and wax really brings out the flake in the paint even at night.
Sticking with 3rd gen. Drove from Missouri to Mississippi and back to Missouri mileage said 28mpg. Cost about $60.00 bucks each way to do 700 miles at 60-65 mph cruise control mainly 💪😎 245 stock tires
So I find something about this deceptive. Either you just bought this toy truck as a content generator or you work for Toyota or you just don't mind blowing your money. You say you already have a third gen, what would be the point of buying another midsize Tacoma for over 50k than blow a bunch more on all those mods? The things you like about the new generation are.. lighter tailgate material and lane keep assistance 😅???? What exactly do you do with these trucks? Go to the local Starbucks and grab a latte? For the price you spent you could have had an actual truck since you already have a 3rd gen rack. Not really making sense son. Imo I've had all these trucks as well as this 4th gen. The 4th is just flashier and a bit more comfortable. The build quality is garbage. That light hood is trash as well as the doors. All electric dash push start crap. The truck does rattle and creak regardless of what you say. If you shut the door hard enough the whole truck starts to sway and bob. Obviously the Toyota family changed hands and they stream lined this new model into basically a rav 4 on a truck frame. Will it last? Possibly. I won't be keeping mine past 80k miles they can have it . I'm sure I'll take a huge loss as well on trade in. Last gen was the last time you'll see a true truck Tacoma. Just because a truck looks cutier or is more teched up doesn't make it a better truck. We are living in the last days of true American muscle, choose wisely folks , these are the last days of true automotives
I have the underground. Terrible color. You wash the truck and it looks great. Eight seconds after you wash it, it looks dirty. The truck never looks clean. It's somehow worse than black. "it's a truck. It's supposed to look dirty!" Just quit talking. Go back to driving through mud puddles in your neighborhood just to give yourself some self-confidence. I don't care if the truck's dirty when its supposed to be. I do care if the truck looks dirty when I want it to look clean. Now when the underground is legitimately filthy, it actually looks really cool because it's this nice combination of coyote tan and weathered gray. It kind of looks like a pair of weathered jeans. OK so the lane tracing thing. It's really hard to get used to because the last vehicle I owned is almost 15 years old I was driving this truck down in Northwest Arkansas . Twisty mountainous roads. Not like Colorado mountains but Arkansas mountains. Tight tight turns. Dude, that thing is almost perfect. It was eerie . You want to grab the steering wheel and just cling to it, because you don't trust it, but at the same time if keep a loose grip and just go with it, it is almost perfect. Once in a while on the highway it does some pretty stupid things. Particularly when there's an exit lane it kind of wants to kamikaze off the shoulder. I only have two comparisons. One was a 24 Malibu and the other was a 23 Buick. Both rentals. Yes, the lane tracing on the Toyota is hands-down light years ahead of that I did a 2000 mile road trip recently. That 4g tacoma is the best cross country highway vehicle I've driven in. The autonomous driving features are better on the Toyota. It just is a really comfortable vehicle to travel in. Meat locker cold AC. Great sound system even in the non-premium. It's quiet. It's just a pleasure to drive. I find it irritating that Toyota hides a 3 to 4 gallon reserve. I get it, it's not good to run out of fuel. Especially in these new vehicles. It's really hard on the fuel pump and it's damaging to the fuel system. As for the engine, that thing has got some great pep. It really is good. The turbo spools up quick. You have power if you want it. You can put that thing in sport mode and it's brisk. It's not a Civic type R. It's not a Tesla with instant torque. But it's a pretty damn peppy engine. And it doesn't seem to be the least bit bothered if you throw 1000 pounds in the truck bed.
I've spent a good amount of time in these trucks, and overall, I'm just not that impressed with the overall product. Good: Solid power down low and smooth transmission. The powertrain is peppy and pretty refined. The TRD Off Road suspension is well sorted and compliant. Bad: The interior fit and finish is of poor quality. The interior plastics are toy grade, the cloth seats are thin and cheap feeling, the headliner feels like it's going to fall off. All the buttons and knobs just feel cheap. Overall, a step back in quality from the 3rd gen. Oh, and the giant screen looks completely out of place in this smaller truck. It's comically oversized for the space, and the smaller screen is just a base Corolla screen. I wish Toyota would've integrated a 12 inch screen into the dash like the Land Cruiser. This generation Tacoma, just like the Tundra, just feels cheap, and for $48K-$55k for a TRD OR, it just doesn't feel like you're getting a quality product for the money. You can't even get power adjusting cloth seats without spending over $50k. I understand this is post COVID inflation prices, but it doesn't mean it should be accepted.

The issue isn't limited to cold mornings. It's happening more often than that.
@teamoildrop Fingers crossed. Thank you!
I am waiting for a 2024 PreRunner (standard long bed). What bed cover do you have? Pros / cons? Discount code available? Thank you very much.
@@chrisb6866 honestly no. The turbo whine is about the only new unique noise

If you’ve got kids… tundra lol
@@teamoildrop I’ve got a kid, she is 2.5 now, does that mean Tundra? Lol, she fits nicely in the back of the double cab at the moment
@@rapture333 if you’re already used to it and don’t mind then Tacoma!
DCLB it is then! Maybe you can get a deal or two with all the extra inventory they have sitting around.

What an odd set of quirks, I wonder if that AA issue is a software glitch of sorts. Glad you like it otherwise though! Enjoy it.

What brand of tonneau cover you have ?
looks like Toyota oem. 4 panel fold hard cover
Correct, the Toyota OEM. Your dealership can get you taken care of. It’s stupid nice.
I've found that if you have spotify, make sure you turn off the option to play the same sounds on all speakers. This made the center speaker less annoying and overall enjoyable.
@@mad-meh2719 I just got rid of the spot after nearly decade and switched to RUclips music… will investigate
A heads-up. Toyota issued a bulletin regarding a transmission problem with 2024 Tacomas. There is a fix for it, but someone is filing suit anyway claiming damage to the transmission can occur that is not addressed by the fix.

Welcome 🍻🍻
This thing is like a spaceship

@@rabajdajr3001 brother that’s a LOT to read! But I’m sure it says a lot of nice things. Take care 😎
I belive if you are in ECO mode it will cut the climate control fan back at times and maybe that is what you are experiencing.
@@cordsen_L I’ve since decided I was just going crazy. The fan doesn’t blow as hard on heat, but still strong regardless
I'll drive my '23 with the V6 into the ground,,,no 4 cyl turbo for me
Let’s keep our 4rd gens above ground!
I have the underground. Terrible color. You wash the truck and it looks great. Eight seconds after you wash it, it looks dirty. The truck never looks clean. It's somehow worse than black.
"it's a truck. It's supposed to look dirty!"
Just quit talking.
It's really hard to get used to because the last vehicle I owned is almost 15 years old
I was driving this truck down in Northwest Arkansas .
Yes, the lane tracing on the Toyota is hands-down light years ahead of that
I did a 2000 mile road trip recently.
🍻🍻🍻
Good feedback! I could agree on those points and ultimately it's unfortunate on pricing of all vehicles these days.
