  • Yesterday evening I decided to make a simple spinning top from brass.
    Tools used:
    Myford Super 7 lathe
2mm Parting off tool (12mm shank)
Left Hand Roughing Cutter (12mm shank)
    and some files.
Bar stock was 16mm Brass Round which I had in my off-cuts bin.
Took about 25 mins total to make in all. (About 1/4 the time it took to edit the video!)
Spins perfectly well, and lasts over a minute.
    Filmed in beautiful 4K UHD.

New subscriber here. It’s a rainy afternoon in North Carolina and I’m enjoying your videos. Will do my best to spread the word. You should have many more subscribers, but it seems that RUclips doesn’t always reward solid content. Wishing you continued success friend.

Thanks and welcome. I really appreciate your kind comment. I've been renovating the workshop the last 6ish weeks, but will have a new video coming shortly. Thanks again for your kind words. :)

A friend of mine lost two fingers and part of his hand in a lathe with those same gloves, safety man..

Hey @Kentucky Trapper. Totally agree. As others have also pointed out the gloves/jewellery etc are a very bad idea, and put the wearer under unnecessary risk, for the type of machining I do. (They are valid in some scenarios for gloves, like hazardous materials, etc but not in my shop). I've been glove and jewellery free since this was raised by some other viewers and machinists a few years ago, and to date still have all my appendages. Sorry to hear about your friend. And yep, stay safe with your machines everyone!

loose the music. it may be your favorite but most interested in this subject will hate it. And loose the gloves of course.

Hey MyfordBoy, thanks for the comment. I'm a big fan and watch loads of your videos. Really appreciate you reaching out. I'm hoping to post a new vid tomorrow/tuesday and am evaluating the music side of things. It also takes aaaaages to edit the video to music as well.

      It's lose, not loose.

I have to comment for others just getting into lathe (or mill) work as a hobby. Long sleeves need to be securely rolled up, long hair must be tied back, no jewelry should be worn at all (especially loose jewelry) and NEVER wear ANY type of gloves when using rotating equipment - it's a disaster waiting to happen. Please do some research on proper safety procedures before doing any more lathe work so you don't get badly hurt (or worse).

Thanks for the comment and after doing more research into lathe safety, gloves absolutely can expose the wearer to more risk. The jewelry comment is also completely valid as are the sleeves and hair ones.
I will be making these changes immediately for all lathe work going forward.
All constructive comments are welcome, and helpful to everyone who watch the videos too.
Stay safe people, and always treat your equipment with care and respect...

Nice video. I actually don’t mind the music. Lose the gloves, but definitely lose the bracelet on your wrist. That’s an invitation to disaster.

Thanks for the feedback. The music is definitely a good way to cover up crappy background noise, but I understand it's not to everyone's taste. And yep, gloves and bracelet have been gone for a while now. My earlier videos definitely showed a significant lack of safety practices! Stay safe people. And cheers again for the feedback.
