I tried Amish food. It's heavy and meant for people who work outside all day in all conditions. It's not meant for suburban folk, working from home and playing video games. It will make you fat in that case.
You have a great presence on camera. You tell your stories very interesting and keeping the viewer eager for more. Thank you for sharing. I heard about you from Montana Haven. God Bless
As a truck driver- I've had such great times exploring restaurants. My dad was an Italian & could cook. So, I love food! I don't like chicken, but amish make it so good. It's a miracle i don't weigh 500 lbs
My ancestors were Mennonite ( Weaver). My 5x great grandfather Josiah fought in the civil war, which is what I believe started the separation, from that point it looks like that's when my family went English or started to. And YES Amish, Mennonite and Pennsilfaanisch-Deitsch ( Pennsylvania dutch) food is the absolute best!!!😋 Thankfully the recipes were passed down and I still cook them! 😋❤
I have Weaver relatives as well, grandmother and great grandmothers were Amish/Mennonite ~ we were raised in the Church if the Brethren which is an offshoot and grew up with all of the wonderful scratch baked / home cooked and canned foods.
My wife and I were married in the Mennonite Church (some of my relatives were Brethren and others were Moravian in Kansas) . Such a rich history of faith, family, giving and food. In 1978 I bought More With Less cookbook and have used it for these many years raising our children and years of church suppers. The cover of the book has come off in 2 pieces, the back cover is dog eared and the pages are stained-signifying lots of use.
We went back to the Amish church where I grew up (New Order) a couple weeks ago for church. That was awesome, seeing my former classmates that I haven't seen for 8 years, hearing acapella hymns again... And then the food
I just spent a week in Ohio with the Amish. One of the best times of my life. We did it our healing seminar there. It was received beautifully. I ate this way for eight days. It was so good. I remember the Haystack dinner that was a lot of fun.
We just moved to a small amish area in Lancaster, PA. Best food ever! My husband loves all the home farm stands where Amish families sell their baked goods. It is a very special area. And it was like Covid never happened here. No one but us wore masks. They told us their state amish representative said it was a mandate, not a law, therefore they did not follow any of mandates placed on us.
The Amish have REAL, HOME GROWN FOOD. Something I go extreme about, to the point I will grind my own flour and make my own baking powder when I "grow up" (I already am, but you know what I mean). That is something I love when we go visit my Amish grandparents. Mashed potatoes, corn, soup, cookies...
I think they do something similar to the boiled condensed milk in South American countries. Dulce de leche I think is what it's called. Sounds so yummy
Years ago when our four children were young I took them and my mom down to Shipshewanna for the stores, sale, and to tour an Amish farm. We ate at a restaurant that served family style Amish food..yum! Precious memories as my mom is no longer with us...we live in West Michigan.😊
oh my goodness now I'm hungry!! The comfort foods you like are some of our favs too! Love amish pb-have an ex amish friend from church who makes it once in a while and I buy it from her-along with her home made bread which is awesome-and the sweetend cond milk caramel slices with pineapple-I need to make that again, Its a fav of mine too! And mush, well duh thats one of the best esp with tomato gravy!! I follow all the youtubers you mentioned altho I need to check out the lady who does recipes! Thanks again for sharing!!
I have been blessed to meet and visit with some Amish there in Shipshewana. Thing that stood out to me is they are very fond of their sweets. (Me too!). We did have haystacks on our first visit. Simple but delicious. There is a whole lot about their culture that they got right and us English could take some lessons!
I like my fried mush topped with fried eggs and syrup, with bacon on the side. Or with levvavasht (sp), I can say it, just don't know how to spell it. Most of our Amish family is from the Bremen/Nappanee area, as well as some in Shipshewana. I'm so glad I've found your channel. I enjoy your content.
What makes most Amish food great is that it's homemade! Farm raised meats/vegetables that homemade with pride. The quality and the pride shines through in the taste!
Perhaps but it's too much work to put on the women. And without electricity they have no way to freeze/refrigerate food so they wind up eating home canned foods for months out of the year, that of course the women have to can. Try running a home with no electricity and no refrigeration, being required to sew all the clothes and farm all te food yourself. No wonder so many young Amish women try to get out.
I was raised Catholic. I went to visit a Mennonite church a few times. They invited me to dinner every time. I quickly became Mennonite. Yes the food IS that GOOD!!!
I love dutch potato filling, pepper hash, fried mush, scrapple, sauerkraut, I could go on and on. My husband just started working for an Amish family as a butcher at their farm market. Oh my, the food he brings home is the best.
I am not Amish but I think I can answer the question based on my research, at least for Lancaster Amish. You are right that pre-1900, the Amish looked like normal farmers, but as industrialization moved to rural areas, the changes it brought started to concern the Amish --- that the changes would diminish their group's cohesion. In 1910, the Peachey Amish split from the old order Amish and since the Peachey Amish allowed telephones and other technology, the old order Amish forbid them. So, I would say the reason they look different now but didn't before 1900 is because of the concern that post-1900 technology would bring in too much worldly influence and disrupt group cohesion.
Amish, Mennonite and Hutterite food is the best out there! One of my friends is a Mennonite and she is a phenominal baker. She thinks of something and she makes it and it's always amazing. We live close to Hutterite colonies and their bread is awesome! Before we moved, we always frequented the Amish. It's neat where I live because at any given time, I am within an hour or two of all three.
Last year I was speaking the local bishop (Clover in southern VA) he related as a child there was no real between his Amish family and the neighbors. Every one was to poor for tractors or cars and no rural electric yet. By the time h was an adult (probably late 60s up to 1970) everything was separate. I know he came here from Delaware but may have grown up in central PA.
We had a caramel spattered ceiling above the stove when I was a kid. I don't think I've heard anyone whose talked about boling sweetened condensed milk for caramel without also talking about their explosion/cleaning/repainting the ceiling story.
Good Day CJ & Amanda So nice to see the both of you 😊 When we visited Lancaster the Amish food was delicious & there pies like no other 😋 I bought a cookbook while there it’s called Country lane Quilts and family cooking Lancaster country Amish recipes I’ve enjoyed this cookbook very much Thanks for your videos Have a blessed day Brenda
I learned a few recipes from a Pentecostal church Mexican fiesta gathering.....a Mexican soup, and a Mexican dessert. Amish probably do share recipes from food gatherings also.
I am glad you answered this question. But the quality of fresh food is the reason food tastes so good. Raw organic grass fed milk is not the same as grocery store ultra pasteurized homogenized GMO grain fed milk. Not even the same food in my opinion. Cook with good quality meat and you get good meals. Cook with grocery store factory farmed meat and it is going to taste okay at best.
You shouldn't cook sweetened condensed milk in the cann anymore. The cans now have a plastic linings. You can make the Carmel in a glass canning jar and scoop it out
I love the church peanut butter with corn syrup instead of marshmallow. Alway got to take some home when my friends had church...heat it up and dip apple slices in it...
Oh my goodness, Squirrely Bear and you make the best videos together! So cute; she is definitely YOUR daughter the way you two interact together. Oh, and yes I watch Megan Fox and Lynnette Yoder as well when I have time!
I've eaten at Yoders Kitchen in Arthur, Illinois; which is an Amish restaurant. The food tastes better because I think they just do not have all the gmo, and food additives in the food. Everything was more fresh---assuming they being farmers grew all their own vegetables. Meats, chicken, etc. farm raised, no hormones. They made their own crackers!! And Carl is right about Amish peanut butter.
That Caramel I’d so good. My whole family loves that Carmel, too. I have made that caramel a few times. My mom made mush and she would slice it and fry in a skillet and we would put butter on it and then eat it.
Oh my goodness thank you for the pineapple Carmel ring recipe. Not that I’ve had it, but the marshmallow peanut butter reminds me of a sandwich on RUclips.
I have eaten at Das Essenhaus several times and also The Blue Gate, the food was pretty good but the desserts were delicious, I was in the area last weekend and we ate at a little diner in Coppes Market in Nappanee and had the best potato salad ever.
Haha when you said haystacks at first I thought you were talking about something I make at Christmas time. You use Chinese noodles, peanut butter, butterscotch morsels and peanuts. So not what you were talking about.

I believe a good deal of separation started happening when electricity started coming to the rural area's. There's a great set books called: Under Leit, The story of the Amish
When I was a kid, my parents used to take us for a ride to Amish country (near Lancaster), and a big thrill was the farmer’s market. They used to get this shaved ham that was THE best ham I’ve ever had. So my question: do you guys still make this ham? Does it have a more specific name? I’d give my right arm to get that ham again; absolutely nothing compares!
Did the Amish separate from society or was it the other way round. I'm a 54 year old Maori traditionalist so I see aspects of the Amish culture from an indigenous perspective. To me the Amish chose to keep what they knew to be a sustainable, practical and productive way of life including the faiths traditions and customs they used to maintain that life. It's unfortunate that they have managed to attract the attention of central government as their lifestyle of peaceful self sustainability is probably seen as a threat to their power. Loving your videos. Thanks for sharing your life.
The Amish are left alone as far as I know. The only time they come to the attention of the government is when they commit crime. It is an unnecessary hard life and seems to be run like a cult. It's silly to make things so difficult on yourself and your children. They do not adequately educate their kids and schooling ends in 8th grade. They are taught by an Amish teacher who only has an 8th grade Amish education, which is more like 4th or 5th grade in any developed country. They have a strict dress code and must wear a costume of sorts that the mother/wife usually sews for her family. Women are way overworked in the Amish and they are expected to serve men. They have very bad health care access and a disturbing number of Amish have false teeth (dentures) by their 20's. When they get cancer or heart disease I assume the "English world" is OK because it is their only way to get treatment by a medical doctor. I wouldn't put them on a pedestal. Perhaps they have some good recipes, but a lot of their food is really not very healthy. They eat canned foods (that the women have to make) for months out of the year. They aren't allowed to use electricity so there's no way for them to eat fresh vegetables, fruits, etc., when they're not in season. No thanks!
The answer to the question is.... If everyone lived the same, then everyone started living differently and driving cars and buying new electronics that were coming out. People changed, the Amish didnt change they stayed the same. So the English started living differently.
Same with Blue Gate last summer. The buffet was very disappointing for the money we spent. This time I don't plan to eat at any of the restaurants while I'm in Shipshewana, going to stop at a fast food place on the way up, then probably stop at the IGA in Goshen for sandwich fixings on the way to the Care House by the hospital, as well as possibly picking up a danish or something for a quick breakfast between my MRI and consult with my oncologist.
There was one thing I really love about how much food and that’s their donuts they have a few places here that are by the Amish and also Mennonites called rise and roll don’t know if you’ve heard of them or not but all those cinnamon donuts and delicious but bored they count the calories
@@theamishpotato Thank you for replying back to me, but my husband wanted me to add this. Ok, rise n’ roll, is truly the best, but my husband seems to think that Das Dutchman Essenhaus, has better baked goods, than the competitor I named. If you like, your opinion?
I’m not ex-Amish, but do you suppose that the world separated themselves from the Amish? If the Amish was the same as the rest of the world back then, and they stayed the same as other people in the world changed?
The haystack looks like a Mexican taco 🌮. Still good. I think the Amish separated from the country late 1700. Mostly because of the language. It was 50/50 and English won out to be national language.
The traditional English answer is: When zippers were introduced, it was decided not to use anymore innovations from the English. If we cannot make it, we should not use it. We should not be dependent on things we cannot make ourselves. As for eating sugar and meat, I am glad I am not Amish
Hey Dad! I just wanted to say something you may not even be aware you did when introducing the beautiful young lady to your left. You called her, "pork princess". Not a pretty picture! She's gorgeous by the way ❤️
I have a question. Do Amish cook traditional German foods like saute' sourkraut with brats or pork ribs? I love it, but Amish around me (TN) seem to not be so advanced about cooking as you are.
We had sourkraut but not brats or pork ribs. I’m not even sure what traditional German food really is. I think most Amish originate from Switzerland. Not sure if their traditions are the same as Germany or not.
@@theamishpotato I had it as a kid in Lancaster P.A. Amish Country. You need the proper molasses or else it comes out weird. It may be best to order it online from an Amish baker in Lancaster.
@@TheKkmoses the recipe we use calls for karo and a little bit of maple flavoring. I’m guessing you can use karo instead of syrup and just leave the maple flavoring out. I think the important ingredients are the peanut butter and the marshmallow crepe. The syrup is just to thin it maybe?
Thanks for the shout out! I try to include recipes in almost all my videos!
Yes, I’ve shared a few of your vids with my wife, but she has yet to make the food😋

Could you replace the potato's with rice for the haystacks. And I have always known haystacks as a desert at Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Yes. Actually I think the original recipe is with rice. I got that mixed up.
I love Lynette too
Hey from Germany.
I love Lynnette Yoder and Megan Fox!!! Also watch the Mennonite Mom!!
The answer to the question is.... If everyone lived the same, then everyone started living differently and driving cars and buying new electronics that were coming out. People changed, the Amish didnt change they stayed the same. So the English started living differently.
Last time I went to the Essen Haus wasn't so good. It was disappointing at best. That said I do have former Amish friends and never been disappointed.
Yes the rise and roll donuts. Very delicious. They are nicknamed “Amish crack” by the Amish.
@@theamishpotato Thank you for replying back to me, but my husband wanted me to add this. Ok, rise n’ roll, is truly the best, but my husband seems to think that Das Dutchman Essenhaus, has better baked goods, than the competitor I named. If you like, your opinion?
YES, it’s really that good 🤤
Sounds like good eating
What goes clip clop clip clop, bang, bang, clipity clop, clipity clop?. A Amish drive by shooting.
I’m not ex-Amish, but do you suppose that the world separated themselves from the Amish? If the Amish was the same as the rest of the world back then, and they stayed the same as other people in the world changed?
That's a very interesting point.
Yeah I think so. The rest of the world took up every new technology and the Amish didn’t.
Interesting question about when did the Amish start. Must have been in the late 1800s.
They actually started in the late 1600s but I guess started separateing themselves more when technology started growing fast.
May I have more info o that cookbook? I looked up the name on Amazon but could not find it. The connection cookbook
The haystack looks like a Mexican taco 🌮. Still good.
I think the Amish separated from the country late 1700. Mostly because of the language. It was 50/50 and English won out to be national language.
Lol my family ( not amish) has always done haystacks. We never knew where they came from.
Was this an Amish dish originally?
Also a fan of Megan Fox
Lynette Yoder used to do a lot of cleaning videos. She is doing less of those now.
The traditional English answer is: When zippers were introduced, it was decided not to use anymore innovations from the English. If we cannot make it, we should not use it. We should not be dependent on things we cannot make ourselves.
As for eating sugar and meat, I am glad I am not Amish
God I love Amish food I am from pa n it's all Amish everywhere u look lol
Yes it must be a women's thing lol
Hey Dad! I just wanted to say something you may not even be aware you did when introducing the beautiful young lady to your left. You called her, "pork princess". Not a pretty picture! She's gorgeous by the way ❤️
Pumpkin and squirrelly bear
Nooo, it didn't upset your mom she probably just wondered why you didn't bring her some to taste.
@@theamishpotato Thank you !!
White cottage company RUclips channel is a very good channel. Mary Yoder ex Amish now Mennonite lady does cleaning, trash to treasure and more!
Sry, I Commented before watching the whole video👍😁👍
Because my family is PA Dutch we ate a lot of that food growing up just curious is it different than the Amish food?
I doubt it. Amish food is just regular food but it is known for being delicious
I wall all three, Lynette Yoder, Montana Haven and Megan Fox - Love them all.
Shoofly Pie
I’ve never had it. I’ll need to find a recipe
@@theamishpotato
I had it as a kid in Lancaster P.A. Amish Country. You need the proper molasses or else it comes out weird. It may be best to order it online from an Amish baker in Lancaster.
I thought the Anabaptists separated at the time of the Industrial Revolution?
Jacob Ammon separated from the mennonites in 1693. That was the start of the amish.
I want to try you guys Amish Sunday peanut butter
Do it. It’s delicious. Link in the comments
I watched the Montana Haven make it ! I wonder if you could use honey or something else besides maple syrup. I don’t care for maple syrup.
Gotcha
