  • I recorded this video just before TENET in genuine 15/70 IMAX film was about to get a couple of screenings at the BFI IMAX and as I type, I'm about to hit the road. TENET is the first of Christopher Nolan's films to get a revival but all of his previous films printed onto IMAX 15/70 film are also getting an outing and you can book to see all seven of them for £105. The link to the relevant page of the BFI IMAX web site is:
    whatson.bfi.org.uk/imax/Onlin...
    I recommend that anyone interested in getting along to this modern take on what we would have called a 'Picture Palace' years ago should take the opportunity to sign up to their email newsletter before leaving the site. That way, you won't miss anything special there in the future.
    The Nolan 15/70 IMAX itinerary is as follows:
    TENET = Sunday Sunday 26 February 2023 12:00 and Monday 27 February 2023 20:15
    DUNKIRK = Sunday 12 March 2023 11:30 and Thursday 16 March 2023 20:00
    INTERSTELLAR = Sunday 09 April 2023 11:30 and Monday 10 April 2023 20:00
    INCEPTION = Sunday 30 April 2023 11:30 and Monday 01 May 2023 20:00
    BATMAN BEGINS = Sunday 14 May 2023 11:30 and Thursday 18 May 2023 20:00
    THE DARK KNIGHT = Sunday 11 June 2023 11:30 and Thursday 15 June 2023 20:00
    THE DARK KNIGHT RISES = Sunday 25 June 2023 11:30 and Monday 26 June 2023 20:00
    For those big Batman fans with the stamina there is a Batman all-nighter with all three of the Nolan films to take you through until morning but this is separate from the £105 deal so you'll have to purchase tickets for this extravaganza separately: Saturday 10 June 2023 22:00
    I should point out that as far as I know both INCEPTION and BATMAN BEGINS did not have any IMAX 15/70 shots but INCEPTION did utilize 65mm and VistaVision for some scenes to provide exceptional quality. This will mean that the full height of the 85 foot wide 1.43:1 IMAX screen is not filled at any time during these two films but all the others will have sections of the full genuine IMAX for your delectation with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES using a significant amount of IMAX that increased for INTERSTELLAR, even more in DUNKIRK and yet more in TENET with the remaining scenes being shot 65mm 2.20:1. DUNKIRK is only 1 hour 46 minutes so in percentage terms this film may have the most genuine IMAX but TENET is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes so has the most IMAX in total (I think!).
    Christopher Nolan's new 15/70 IMAX film opens on 21st July 2023 so all the above are a prelude to the next Nolan epic. Let me know if you are going to see any of these works of art in the fabulous glass palace with the biggest screen in the UK that is the BFI IMAX because we may well be able to meet up as a group of fellow film enthusiasts at one or two of them.
    The book 'The People's Palace' written by Mark Nicholson is currently sold out but a second edition is being printed and will be available soon. Email Mark at 'puddyplumes (at) aol (dot) com' but I've disguised his address in what I hope is an obvious fashion, so leave a comment for me if you can't work it out.

Turned out to be digital 2k and had to travel to BFI London in 2012 to finaly see it for real in IMAX 1570 on the TDKR premiere. Hi John,
    it was great to meet you and your good lady tonight at the BFI IMAX.
    It was a rare treat to watch Tenet as Nolan intended. The full screen scenes were stunning. The sound was tight too.

      Morning Nikolaki. I should be completely knackered right now but somehow I seem to be on a high. One of the greatest cinema visits I've ever enjoyed probably has something to do with that. As for the bits and pieces on the screen, that's down to the genuine IMAX process and if I get permission to reveal all in the upcoming video (the people at the BFI and possibly IMAX too will have to clear it all) then we'll all get a better understanding of why these tiny bits and pieces appear for about five seconds at a time and then sometimes return five seconds later.
      Good to meet you and a few others over the past couple of days. Now I want to see Dunkirk again! And Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises. There is nothing like IMAX and last night proved it, if it needed proving all over again.
      John.

      @Movie Collector definitely a night to remember!
      One little point to remark on during our discussion afterwards regarding 2001. The version I watched at the Science Musuem IMAX was the Nolan "unrestored" version.
      2001 is the movie I've seen the most times in the cinema (including with live orchestra - though they used the restored version for that).
      Most underwhelming presentation of it was at the BFI IMAX when it looked like a thumbnail on that massive screen. That is going back a few decades though.
      Anyway, really looking forward to your upcoming video on the IMAX process. 👍

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Год назад +1

      @@nikolaki 2001 might play better at the Prince Charles because the screen is enveloped by black masking as it should be. A little difficult to do that with the size of IMAX screens and would also add one more layer of complication and possible failure. The technicalities and engineering involved in getting an IMAX print up onto the screen is so complex and amazing to the point of incredible. You should see the speed of TENET coming off one platter and onto another when I get something up. I may have to do a preview video and then a full video later as I'll need to get it all cleared for publication.
      Thinking about 2001 again... we'll all have to head for Bradford when it's put onto the Cinerama screen. That's got to be the best possible way to see 2001 in the world today even if the prints probably aren't quite as good as the master prints original audiences would have seen in 1968 and 1969.

      Interestingly, I don' believe INCEPTION actually had any IMAX in it so it was a blow-up from other formats, including VistaVision if I remember correctly, but it probably illustrates the superiority of film that such quality can be attained and successfully fill an IMAX screen. Having said that, video projection isn't the complete joke it was just a few years ago so that's getting up there but still limited to 4K in faux IMAX presentations.
      1.5 million feet of IMAX was shot in the making of TENET and I'm rather excited to be getting a second chance to see it. It's the sort of film that should be on the schedule at these last remaining genuine IMAX cinemas regularly along with INTERSTELLAR and DUNKIRK as they are so special to look at in a similar way to 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. They have to be seen on an enormous screen in the ultimate 70mm quality with a big audience to really see them as they should be seen.

I was always so fastidious about that but it was a time when I was putting around 3000 hours a year into the classic car documentaries so I thought I'd removed the batteries but I hadn't. I used Super 8 in those to get authentic looking 'archive' film that wasn't really archive. It worked a treat, particularly if a section was put into black and white at the video editing stage. You simply can't generate something that looks so genuinely old with video so film is the only way to do it. The new Super 8 camera has been expected for years but it's still being developed. I really enjoyed Tenet, by the way, and this year we are actually planning on watching through Nolan's whole filmography ahead of Oppenheimer.

Get on their email list so you can keep up to date just in case. The Prince Charles cinema just off Leicester Square is a bit of an olde worldy smaller type of cinema but that's another one worth keeping an eye on as they screen a lot of 35mm and some 70mm. In fact, they have a 2.20:1 70mm print of INTERSTELLAR on there on Monday night when the IMAX is screening the 15/70 print of TENET. I believe Sir David Lean insisted that RANK / ODEON remove the curved screen out and replace with a flat screen so as not to distort those magnificent desert vistas! You mentioned what was Ranks flagship and i suppose still is The Odeon Lecister Square i have not been there for years but i know it was completely refitted out not long ago but how sad to see all the proper cinema seats gone replaced with those silly sofa seats this is not cinema as we know it but progress they tell me.
    Also i must mention when you do go to most of these multi screen cinemas, Odeon, Vue etc your sitting there looking at a blank white screen the screen tabs were ditched years ago it just is not proper cinema as we knew it not even a glimmer of coloured light on the screen your little home cinema would leave them standing! a travisty and normally the sound blasting out far to loud this is modern cinema, as you said John the pleasure palaces are a thing of the past so sad just memories.
    I do hope those 70mm prints at the BFI of Mr Nolans films are in decent condition ie NO scratched on cue dots which i witnessed many years ago on a print of "Spartacus!"
    Final words so funny watching the BBC screening "How The West Was Won" that giant 3 strip Cinerama MGM Epic from 1962 on a tv screen was lost like a letter box! instead of a 60ft Wide Screen like when we originally saw it at our ABBEY CINERAMA CINEMA in Liverpool - Happy Days! - John Keep up the good work it is always very interesting and much appreciated your time and effort! It's sad the way cinema has gone but it's a business and if people aren't paying money to watch films in a cinema then the business owners have to do what they need to and what they can to remain profitable. Home television is now so good that it's made it harder to justify watching a video in a cinema when you can watch it at home. The BFI IMAX is not exactly cinema as we know it as it's a different screen ratio and at that scale, difficult to put motorized masking on. But I think it's a modern version of a picture palace and with so few original picture palaces still in operation we need to support these places.

      Morning Dave. Jaws was a 4K video projection and this is one of the things I need to highlight more because people think that because a video is being shown in an IMAX branded cinema they have seen IMAX. They haven't. To see IMAX in its ultimate form it has to be the real deal IMAX 70mm with the image area 15 sprockets wide. It's proved to be the only large film format other than 2.20:1 70mm that's stood the test of time but has the advantage over standard 70mm of being three times the image area, hence the high 1.43:1 aspect ratio. I used to describe the clarity of IMAX as "sharper than the human eye can take in" so I'll see if I still think that's the case soon.

      @@mobey56 It's not IMAX Mobey. Cinemas with the IMAX name might have shown it but it's not IMAX. It is a very good film though with what is possibly the best video quality I've ever seen. There are video cameras that are being branded as IMAX which may have been used but that still wouldn't be the same. IMAX has been around since the 1970's and it's a format for shooting film on the 65mm negative film stock that is then printed onto 70mm positive film. It runs through the camera horizontally and is 15 sprockets wide for each frame. This means it is three times the size of standard 70mm. But IMAX as trying to stay in business and that's why ordinary cinemas are getting the branding and just projecting a lowly 4K video usually shot anything other than genune IMAX. Showscan went down the same path years ago and that was the end of that one. Cinerama made a similar mistake many years before that but at least they went down to standard 70mm from the three-strip 35mm 6 sprocket high wonder with separate full coat magnetic 35mm mutli channel sound that preceded it. IMAX has pulled off the switch very well though so they deserve all the credit they get for that. But it's not IMAX.

    I believe you said in this video "Sydney put the real McCoy back in after some pressuasion from Mr Nolan". Just to confirm, does this mean Sydney will be putting in their 1570 equipment back?
    I was watching this video earlier at school during lunch, reading the subtitles as to not disturb others around me, but when I read that Sydney's putting their 1570 projector back, I yelled "Yes!"
    The Sydney Imax screen will be the 3rd biggest imax screen in the world, so I'm glad they are putting it to use. I've been worried recently that I would have to travel all the way to bloody Melbourne each time they were showing something on 1570. Thank goodness!

The reviews seem fairly consistent that the picture quality on the 820 is a little better, but the Oppo has one feature the 820 doesn't - the ability to remove the automatic audio delay that a player introduces.The 820 will add up to 250 milliseconds of delay but it can't remove that initial delay. So to my question - have you ever been in a situation where you needed to reduce or remove that automatic delay? I'm wondering whether that feature is very rarely needed in real life.

      TENET did have 1.5 million feet of IMAX shot in the making of it so I suppose that's as close as we've ever come to a full IMAX film. But Dunkirk may pip it to the top spot in terms of percentage of the final product, I'm not sure. The problem with sound and large format films has been an obstacle in the past so someone may overcome it one day. I suppose the main difficulty is caused because actors get distracted by the din coming from the camera.
      I'm not the biggest fan of Quentin Tarrantino's films. I really didn't like Pulp Fiction in 1994 and very nearly didn't get past the rape scene but having just managed to get through Everything Everywhere All At Once I thought I might be desensitized enough to that sort of thing now and thankfully, it doesn't bother me as badly. Excessive, needless violence isn't something I enjoy in a film but I was prepared to take it as more tongue-in-cheek this time around so I was finally able to enjoy it. I have never seen Reservoir Dogs and still have no desire to. I quite liked The Hateful Eight and plan to get the 4K of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood if I ever remember to pick it up. He didn't direct True Romance but that's effectively one of his films and I think that's probably the best so far but other opinions are available!
