2023 THE YEAR IN REVIEW

- It's been a hectic year for the Movie Collector channel and if all goes to plan this video will be the first of two parts looking back over the year with the second intended to follow about a week later and covering the 4K disc releases we've enjoyed in 2023 including my selection of the ten best. This video covers the IMAX 15/70 films at the BFI IMAX, the film collector conventions and home cinemas - both my own and Simon Nicholls, plus a visit to the Leicester branch of HMV, Richer Sounds in Holborn, London (Bloomsbury) for a demonstration of the Optoma UHZ50 4K video projector and also a few other items.

Once again it’s been a joy watching your videos again this year John and appreciating your never ending passion for cinema. Keep up the great work and all the best for 2024
Thank you Marko. Have a merrrrrrry Christmas. John.
Hi John. Another great video that shows just how much was both achieved and enjoyed in 2023. The year flashed by for me. And many thanks indeed for the link and shout out to my video on Film Is Fabulous! Most appreciated. Talk to you soon, Chris
Evening Chris. Let's hope a few people go over and watch your video. Merry Christmas. John.
Lovely video John. It was quite the packed year for you. I'm glad I was part of it and thank you for including my visit in this video.
The new bottom mask solution works great. I bet Mark jumped at the challenge.
Merry Christmas my friend to you and Sue. See you in 2024 hopefully.
Trev
Morning Trev. It looks like you had a late night so no doubt you and Katie were enjoying a few screenings on Christmas evening. We did the same and had a wonderful time of it.
Mark has his own home cinema but now wants to build another one so it's possible he's going to use the same linear motor on a remote control solution in his new build. That's going to be a bigger screen that mine if it goes to plan so will probably require linear motors for top and bottom masking as 15 feet would be pushing a roller solution too far. Apparently his 35mm cinema projector repair was finally broadcast on BBC last week as the big thing in the current series of THE REPAIR SHOP. We don't have television (and haven't since 2010) so we haven't been able to see it but you should look it up.
Enjoy Boxing Day and keep well.
John.
Thank you for your videos comments and improving my collection if not my wealth! Seasons greetings and may your channel continue to flourish in 2024.
Thank you Mike. Sorry about draining your wallet though! Have a very merry Christmas. Make sure you watch plenty of movies. John.
Thank you for all of the content on this channel over the year John plus for bringing to my attention a number of other movie-related channels on RUclips which I have since also subscribed to and regularly watch their videos. 👍🏻🙏🏻
And I've just watched one of them Cheekster and seen that you've one a Blu-ray box set in the competition on that channel. Well done. John.
@@moviecollector5920 - Thank you John. That was a really tough competition as well. Death Metal is really not my bag! 🙉
Merry Christmas and a happy new year John! Here’s to many many more videos in 2024
Thank you Sisco. A merry Christmas to you too. John.
Thank you John and wishing you a very merry Xmas.
And a merry Christmas to you too. Thank you for always being there on every video this year. John.
Ho, ho, ho! Have a great 2024 John!
You too Henri. Hoping to record the best of 4K in 2023 today. John.
I can't believe it's been a whole 365 days since your last end-of-year review, John! I've hugely enjoyed a year of your fascinating, always passionate, videos; they're clearly a labour of love. So thank you, John!
In many ways, this feels like a golden age in physical media, despite sales being down. These 4Ks consistently make me feel I'm watching and curating my own wee series of film prints! And that's utterly thrilling. Back in the 80s and 90s - even the early 2000s! - who would have imagined the future held such superlative, mesmerising quality, at such a relatively great price?! I'm glad that you're here documenting this exciting moment in home entertainment.
So may I wish you all the best for 2024, and another year of home cinema greatness! Cheers, John🍻
I have the 2023 round-up of 4K releases ready to go live later so I hope you'll enjoy that one too. You are absolutely right about how amazing it is that we can all purchase cinema quality for the home for such a small outlay. There isn't much that you can get for the sort of cost of a Blu-ray or a 4K disc that offers a similar level of enjoyment. If sales are down then let's hope it's due to last year being a better year for titles that were released on disc. Disney seem to be re-joining the home movie market so that's got to be a good thing.
John.
Terrific, John. That another video is on the way is delicious news 😋I believe Get Carter was in your last 4K end-of-year round-up, and you were spot on: I bought it on the strength of your words, and it blew me away! @@moviecollector5920
Hi John! I enjoyed this trip back through our year on your channel and looking back you did accomplish a ton of interesting things. The home cinema project alone finished and functioning is an achievement along with the film events you and many had to coordinate etc and the Nolan Imax vids (behind the scenes) you produced for us all to share .... wow just another thank you to yourself AND i'm gonna slip out on the limb and send a thanks to your wife who obviously supports your time and efforts to share this channel with us film buffs abroad lololol Meanwhile best wishes and see you after the top 10 4k year review it's gonna be epic.... Cheers D in BC!!!
Morning Dave. I might be a little held up on the look back at the 4K releases of the year but it's in the pipeline. I was looking at them all a couple of days ago and it's not so clear cut as last year which are the best. I'll have to think about it all some more if I can find the time.
I think you watched the 4K of HUNTER KILLER recently and so I did too. Mine has gone down with the 4K fault so that's another one I'll have to replace in the ever growing list. I might be getting to the bottom of the cause though but I need to look at a whole lot more before going public with any possible guidance of what not to do to look after these discs and make sure they will run all the way through in the future.
Have a merry Christmas and keep watching those movies.
John.
Thank you John, and a very Merry Christmas to you!
The same to you Pete. Don't spend the whole time watching movies though... well, you've got to stop to eat something occasionally! John.
Thank you for a fun year of reviews, behind the scenes and other film fun. I had hoped you'd cover It's a Wonderful Life before the holidays, but maybe next year! 🙂
Wishing you and wifey a most merry Christmas, a happy, healthy new year and I'm looking forward to future reviews! All the best for the year ahead 🙂
I think I did cover 'It's A Wonderful Life' in a Christmas movie recommendations three years ago. It's a good 4K disc but no doubt some will complain because the frame was cropped all round by a few millimetres. John.
@@moviecollector5920 I shall have to try to find that then, thanks! Have a lovely holiday John, all the best.
Great vid John. Looking forward to your 2024 ones
Thank you John. Can't think of what to do next so I think I'll take a look at the HMV web site right now. John.
Great video! Love the Christmas Jumper👌
Thank you Diego. The jumper's quite a warm one which is handy at this time of year. John.
Fantastic as always John..... Merry Christmas 🎄🎄
Thank you Roy. Have a merry Christmas. John.
A lovely review John, and so nice to see realisation of so many of your dreams (home cinema development, film meetings, seeing Nolan’s back catalogue in IMAX, etc.). Hope you both have a peaceful Christmas and a healthy new year! ⛄️🎄🎅❄️
Thank you George. You have a lovely Christmas too. I hope you've got the Aston a nice present this year!

Keep up the great videos john.
I love them.😃😃😃
Thank you Justin. I'm currently planning the 2023 review of 4K disc releases. John.
Evening John, a great look back on 2023..here's to 2024 😊
Evening Marty. I don't think I'll be doing end of year reviews like this very often but I felt I had to do because there won't be another RUclips year like 2023 for me. John.
@moviecollector5920 You definitely fitted in a lot in this year John.
Great look back John , let's hope 2024 is just as good , have a great Christmas 🎄 and all the best 👍.
Thank you Paul. You have a good Christmas too. John.
Merry Christmas John a good year for people being out of work.
Merry Christmas to you Craig. A cinematic sort of year like this one is not likely to be repeated as I don't often get to put a new home cinema together but I do hope more genuine IMAX films will get made now as a result of the success of OPPENHEIMER. John.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas, & another fantastic new year.
Thank you Floyd. Have a very merry Christmas yourself. John.
Merry Christmas John and a happy film viewing 2024....... I look forward to many more classic reviews from your good self🎉🎉🎉🎉

What a year it has been. Merry Christmas John!
A great year to be a film projectionist Thomas. I hope you're made some life long memories and will make more in the years ahead. Merry Christmas. John.
Happy holidays from Calgary Alberta Canada. Keep up the outstanding work. It’s informative and I value your opinions. Plus you just make me smile. Glad there are people all over the world who share in my passion for cinema.
There seem to be a lot of film enthusiasts with us on here Jon so we're certainly not alone. Have a merry Christmas over there. John.
Great explination, I never understood the reasoning behind such choices, thanks.
That lack of knowledge out there Colum was a big reason why I decided to start this channel. Fortunately many people understand it now. John.
What a year for you John a true cinema enthusiast i also made improvements to my home cinema achieving full Atmos 7.1.4 acquiring two Emotiva amplifiers Basx A2 and A5 taking all my sound loads off my Marantz 8015 avr what a revelation the clarity improved and the object sound placement was so much more precise, Top Gun Maverick had never sounded better. For me it’s not just the image quality but the sound matters just as much. I have a really big surround audio collection and that breathed as if had never before.
My own system is too big for the room Steve but THX was something I'd dreamed about for a long time before finally managing to afford the KEF package to go with the Pioneer amp I'd purchased some years before. I justified it all because I knew we could use it at the BFCC and back then we used a massive venue and the floor shook during some of the best sequences of blockbuster film extracts we screened. So it's a little overkill in a home cinema but I've managed to tame it so it doesn't turn us into a pair of nervous wrecks but there's no point in adding to it as the sound comes from everywhere such is the nature of THX. I've had Dolby surround of one form or another for more than 30 years now so I'm not as obsessed with it as I once was. And now that home video projection is so astounding sound has taken on a lesser role. 30 years ago home video was a joke and so the only way to make it at all special was to have a good sound system but those days are long gone now. When I think back to my first video projector it was just to get the image onto a big screen but gawd did it look terrible.
John.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you Mr. Braddock. You have a merry Christmas too. John.
Another fantastic year of film entertainment John. I’ve learnt a lot from you and it’s been a real pleasure watching all your videos , for me your the best presenter on you tube and the variety of films you both review and tell us the history about stand you apart from other critics . Merry Christmas to you and your family . Can’t wait for your best of 2023
Thank you Richard. I'm just putting a best of 4K 2023 together right now. It's about half an hour long I'm afraid but once I started waffling I found there was so much. And I even chopped out a few of the releases too. John.
Merry Christmas John, hope you and your wife have a great christmas 😀

Nice video john have a great Christmas 🎄
You too Mark and thank you. John.
Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I would like to thank you for all of your brilliant videos about films and specially movies in 4K which has turned into my favorite format to enjoy pictures. I have to admit that 2023 was the year that I saw the lowest quantity of movies in cinemas mainly because of my job and that the not dubbed films were program too late so my only possibility to watch it was to wait for the 4K. Merry Christmas and a happy 2024 to you and all your family and friends in the UK or us we say here in Chile "Feliz Navidad y próspero 2024". Adiós amigo.
Thank you Gaspar. And thank you for watching all the way down there in Chile. You've made me think of one film that should be high up the list for a 4K disc release - ALIVE. I think that was a Chilean rugby team. I completed a documentary on the 1970 World Cup Rally this year and I'm pretty sure that rally went through Chile. John.
Hello, the rugby team members were from Uruguay and the plane in which they were crushed in the middle of the Los Andes Cordillera. They were found by a "cowboy" that was passing by. Back in those days the media "hide" many things of what really happened to them, and it was not until many years later that all the facts were public, mostly thanks to the own players and the person who find them and passed away few years ago. Try to reach a mexican movie about these story that is really cheesy and that for many years was used by the chilean TV to "illustrate" their reports about what happened.... and also they "took" many scenes from "Santa Claus: The Movie" for their Christmas reports. Yeap, nothing can beat the "experience" of watching chilean TV in the 80"s.

Thank the movie gods for people like yourself John. Keeping film alive.
Hope you have a great Christmas 🎅🎄⛄❄️🎥🎞️📽️
Thank you Castles and make sure you have a very merry Christmas yourself. John.
Merry Christmas John from Derbyshire, a great year for film, with Oppenheimer being one of the stand out highlights. Clive.
I think OPPENHEIMER may prove to save a lot of cinemas from closure Clive. I suppose it all depends on if the film industry realizes it was the 70mm and IMAX 15/70mm prints that generated so much of the business and they learn from it. John.
thanks for another year of fascinating and entertaining videos. Merry Christmas, best wishes from the Netherlands.
Thank you Sjoerd. A merry Christmas to you too. John.
I love watching your videos, wholesome, educational, and entertaining. Have a great end of the year sir.
Thank you Brennan. You have a merry Christmas too. John.
Great video as always. Watching your video's makes me wanna go into my own dedicated room of wonders. Love your automated masking!. 2023 was a great year for physical media and 2024 will not disappoint us collectors either. I wish you the best. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Thank you Dominus and thank you for watching so many of my videos. Have a merry Christmas and hopefully you'll see me in another video before the year is out but it might be a little late. John.
Really great review John! I've only just found your channel, so I am now catching up on some great content you have put together. Looking forward to more videos in 2024!
Good to have you here James. I started this channel in May 2020 if I remember correctly so they must be about 150 videos up there now. I've tried to ensure all of them are interesting, flow without too much superfluous nonsense and will be enjoyable for film enthusiasts everywhere to watch. John.
Merry Christmas
And a merry Christmas to you too Victor. John.
Great video sir. I am definitely awaiting your best of list next video. On another note I hope you and your family have a great Christmas. Cheers.
Thank you Grant. I've suddenly got a little tied up but I'm going to try to find the time to go through a review of the 4K discs of 2023 and select some sort of top ten. Merry Christmas. John.
Glad to see you’ve experienced the imported Criterion’s 4K release of Blow Out. It’s an amazing release and in my opinion one of De Palma’s best. Have you managed to watch ‘Murder a lad Mod’ on the 2nd disc? It’s an interesting watch and great to own on disc. Criterion UK are starting to release some fabulous 4K discs now (After Hours, One False Move) and I’m certainly looking forward to Thelma and Louise, Lone Star and The Roaring Twenties. Happy Christmas 🤶
I have seen Murder a la Mod and although it's not exactly De Palma's best you can see his style starting to develop. AFTER HOURS was a great release and really pleased to have seen it. I'd not even heard of the film before that 4K disc was released. John.
Very happy with all your videos, John. It's a pleasure to watch and always learning something new from your comments.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Thank you Juanjo. And have a very merry Christmas. John.
Crimson Tide is also my favourite submarine movie. It had a great Dolby Digital soundtrack at the cinema.
I have the PAL LaserDisc and the Dolby Stereo on that is first class but it's the overall film that impresses me. The confined nature of it with the isolation from the outside world. The acting, the story and the suspense combined with the ups and downs of the relationships between the main characters. Just wonderful. I must get over to Simon's and nick that print!
John.
@@moviecollector5920 - I had the NTSC Dolby Digital THX Laser Disc which sounded great. I think I shall give this movie a rewatch as haven’t seen it for many years.
Thank u for all the great videos this year and I'm looking forward to more in 2024. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year John :)
Thank you Mirvmn. I hope you're having a merry Christmas too. John.
I caught Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer on their original screenings and loved all three.
Was that at the BFI IMAX or another genuine IMAX house? I'm still hoping the BFI IMAX will offer us an annual 15/70 long weekend festival sometime whereupon a whole load of us film enthusiasts can get together and enjoy a whole load of these great works together. I think people would fly in all over the world for that into what is one of the world's top cinemas.
John.
@moviecollector5920 BFI Imax of course - Merry Christmas John
@@letstalkcriterion Good man!
Thanks for a the videos this year and best wishes for Xmas. We should have the Abyss in 4k early next year 👍
I recently ran my Super 8 'Scope print of THE ABYSS aurellio. The quality of that print tells me that a 4K reduction from the Super 35 camera negative should yield yet another quality 4K disc release. It looks pretty darned good on Super 8 so it should look spectacular on 4K. Have a merry Christmas and keep watching those movies. John.
Merry Christmas Mr. Cinema (John). Thank you for creating so many wonderful videos during the year, the are always so educational and wholesome, and it always makes my day when you post. All the best in the new year!

Good to have you here Chase. That Ridley Scott fellow has directed some wonderful films down the years. John.
Merry Christmas John. Enjoyed watching your content throughout this year, picked up some nice stuff myself this year. Looking forward to Dune Part Two in March. Cheers. Gaz.
Keep it to yourself Gary but there are hopes that the 4K master video of DUNE 2 is going to be blown up to 15/70 IMAX. That's a sign of renewed faith in film if ever there was one. John.
Sorry forgot to mention, John, you review of 2023 in film is a bit reminiscent of Barry Norman’s annual celebration of film and used to be shown between Christmas Day and New Year Day… maybe you can play a few bars of ‘I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free’… in next weeks video? 😊
I don't expect to ever have another year packed with film related things like this one Stephen so it's likely the only time I'll ever put a video together quite like this. Hopefully I'll get the time to look back at the 4K disc releases I've purchased this year as I haven't reviewed all of them so it will be good to mention a few others.
John.
Merry Christmas John and thank you for your dedication to the art of film presentation and preservation. P.S., With exception to gentleman wearing the hat, perhaps next year you will find a milliner to craft a better fitting cap.

Great video John - I’ve got to get down to London imax - never been.
OPPENHEIMER is getting a couple of screening 6th and 7th January I think Mark. Whenever you do manage to get down you'll have to make sure it coincides with a real IMAX film otherwise you'll just see a 4K video projection and it's not particularly impressive. By comparison it's terrible but it is still on a very big screen which always helps. There's a Travelodge in Waterloo which is only ten minutes walk away. It's not the nicest part of London but it does mean it's easy to get to the IMAX. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Thanks John! Just thinking about booking some tickets for Oppenheimer now as my girlfriend would like to go aswell - some half decent seats left - it says 70mm IMAX so hopefully that’s the way it’s supposed to be seen. I’ll report back if we make it down there👍
@@mdk9000 That's the one. IMAX 70mm does mean 15/70 and as it's the BFI IMAX the only reason they'll screen a 4K video is if there's a breakdown of the film projector. That's a rare occurrence. John.
Merry Christmas! Great wrap for 2023. What motor did you end up getting? I want to eventually go to motorized masking as well
For the side and the top masking I use basic curtain motors which don't seem to be getting manufactured any longer but look up Add-A-Motor and you should see them. For the bottom mask it's those linear motors which I stumbled across on eBay. The remote control can be found separately but it was powering it all up that flummoxed me. I should have stuck to using a car battery but I never was very clever with electricity. Mark immediately could see the whole thing needed a power supply and I found one with the right volts and wattage on eBay for less than a tenner. It was intended for LED light strips but fits the bill. John.
So John, is the head wear at the end of your videos going to be a ‘feature’ of all your content going forward? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🎉
Just wait until I review Battlestar Galactica!

Great video and many happy returns sir! What 4K player do you use John? I have the Sony ubp -x700 but may upgrade. I don’t like using the ps5 as a back up 4k player.
I have a couple of Panasonic's: a 300 series attached to the telly and a 400 on the video projector. I'd like to get the 800 series but want to get one that's chipped for all blu-ray zones and all DVD regions. Those cost around £450 so that's the stumbling block.
John.
U didn't review titanic 4k :(
I don't much care for the film. It should look good though as the PAL LaserDisc certainly does. A very fine grain Super 35 must have been used to shoot it. I saw the 70mm blow-up and it was too good for the CGI which was poor at that resolution. John.
I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos this year, John. Your knowledge and insights have been very much appreciated. Hope you have a great Christmas and that you keep making these videos in 2024.

Film has been such a wonderful hobby for me through my entire life Darren. Now it's making a big of a comeback thanks to the success of OPPENHEIMER so let's hope that continues so that cinemas will have the choice of offering patrons something different and better than they can enjoy at home. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thanks very much pal will do Merry Christmas
Happy Christmas John! All the best for 2024! Dunkirk, Interstellar and Oppenheimer at the BFI were highlights for me also and it was also nice to visit the new HMV in Oxford Street recently, although they had sold out of the Oppenheimer 4K steelbooks that I was hoping to get there.
I still need to get up to Oxford Street but maybe in the new year the hate marches will have ceased and it will feel more like London. Maybe we'll see each other at the BFI IMAX sometime. I'm still hoping they'll go for the idea of a long weekend 15/70 IMAX festival because not only would I love that but I think it would attract enthusiasts from all over the world. John.
@@moviecollector5920 I think a 15/70 festival would be a great idea! I would definitely go into London for it. I think the next time I visit the BFI will be for Dune 2 in the spring, I loved the first film and think it warrants seeing it on the biggest screen possible :) I should have really taken a video in HMV but I dont have a channel and it was packed when I was there close to xmas. It was nice to see the physical media sections busy but the 4K part of the shop was smaller than I imagined it would be.
@@nick1635 Make sure you know the format of Dune 2 and what is playing in each of the genuine IMAX houses because if 15/70 prints aren't struck then if it's a 1.43:1 the Science Museum will be the more impressive as they have the dual laser projection system which means videos shot 1.43:1 can still be shown in the original IMAX ratio. Not the case at the BFI IMAX. But if the BFI IMAX do get a 15/70 print then that would be my choice. Even a blow-up from a video master file to film should still be better than a video projection as it will gain the superior contrast, colour and natural film grain, albeit a particularly fine film grain at the scale of the IMAX frame size. John.
I am very happy to have met your RUclips channel this year, I wish you a great end of the year, thanks for your good work, best wishes John.
It's nice to have you here Jose. I still hope to get a top ten 4K releases out next week but it might take a while longer than that. Have a merry Christmas. John.

Season's Greetings Timothy! In other words, have a very merry Christmas. John.
What a terrible year for Hollywood it’s been…flop after flop after flop…warners on the edge of bankruptcy and paramount in a bad financial situation as well, the proposed merger may save them for a while…disneys output has been awful and next year is looking even worse …if this continues cinemas are going to disappear, something I really don’t want to happen….but as for legacy releases on 4K it’s been a great year, there’s been a lot of old films that I’ve been waiting for on the format that were made available for the first time and the start of the new year brings aliens and the abyss…true lies however is not looking good unfortunately.
Cinemas are in terminal decline as it is but OPPENHEIMER may help a few who still have the capability to screen film and there offer something different to what you can see at home because that film has sent a message to the industry. Let's hope a few more film makers shoot and finish on film in the future to offer the best possible quality in cinemas. If that happens I'll return to my old cinema going ways for sure. John.
Merry Christmas
The same to you nacthenud. I think we've been corresponding on here for around three years now. John.
@@moviecollector5920 Sounds about right. Your unique perspective on films and 4K reviews keep me coming back even though we use very different equipment and have different preferences. I'm always interested to hear what you have to say.
@@nacthenud I hope you'll enjoy the next video then. I should have it finished in a day or two and it will be a look back at most of the 4K discs I've watched new this year. John.
