    People are reporting issues and break downs with showings of 70MM IMAX presentations of OPPENHEIMER all over the world. In this video we talk about the challenges of projecting such a monster of a film in 70MM, what it means for the future of CINEMA, and whether or not you should skip 70MM IMAX for one of the digital formats all together or not.
    OPPENHEIMER is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey JR.

    As a projectionist myself, I think it would’ve been appropriate for Nolan to split the film in two and have an intermission planned. That would relieve the weight issue and the other logistical nightmares. Also, there’s still people who have worked with 35mm film prints in the past that know how to handle situations like this. Give us retraining and practice runs ahead of time so we can handle them.

      People are already used to binging series, skipping intros because they don't need a summary after a short break.
      I think that a well planned intermission would do well.
      Pretty much how they do with musicals, let people have a break, go to the restroom and stock up at the bar, then back to watching.

      I agree about the intermission. I have not seen this movie yet, but in 3 hours, most people are going to have to go to the bathroom sometime. I have thought for many years that one of the best things to happen to the movie industry is getting these movies out on VHS tapes, and now DVDs, so people can watch them at home, and if they need to go to the bathroom, they can just pause it and not miss anything.

    I saw it in 70mm IMAX at the Indianapolis State Museum. Not a single technical issue. Was the most impressive presentation I’ve ever seen of a film. Image quality was nuts and perfect, with just the right amount of grain and dust you want, but super clear and sharp. Sound mix was perfect. No problem discerning dialogue. The sound was so impressive that it quite literally took my breath away more than once. Felt like it was shaking my soul. All that to say, was a great experience.

    There is practically a ritual projectionists have to do to properly play IMAX movies, and if you aren't trained to do it with some experience, things can go wrong. From what I remember, the projectionist went through checking everything was correct 4 times before the movie started. Watching him was like watching an OCD person with their struggles. It seemed ridiculous, but knowing how finicky the format is, it wasn't ridiculous at all.

    It’s definitely the fault of the cinema chain who’s running it. Here in the UK we have 3x 70mm IMAX venues (used to be more) but the BFI in London recently posted that it took their projectionists the whole weekend, working through night, to assemble the film and get it ready for rehearsals on MONDAY. These guys are veterans and have worked with the IMAX projectors for decades. Monday was the deadline set by IMAX so what on earth are these other cinema chains doing? They haven’t prepared properly and have ignored the procedures and deadlines set by IMAX themselves. Shameful.

      It's much easier for BFI as they quite regularly screen IMAX 15/70mm prints from their archives, such as the recent Christopher Nolan retrospective series. That means they have plenty of in-house 70mm experience. The issue for many other cinemas is that there hasn't been an IMAX 15/70mm release for 2 years, so the equipment has been left unused and forgotten.

    I also used to work as a projectionist when I was a teenager (in the late 1980's for me) and did the job for just over a year, so I learned a lot about the craft and experienced a lot of the same problems you saw (film spooling onto the floor instead of the take up platter, film breaks, shutter lock, film melting, etc.) much like every projectionist. The cause of this film's projection problems is clearly defined in your video: The print is too big to fit on the platters! The whole system is designed with certain tolerances for tension on the film as it passes through all the pulleys and the longer the film, the more stress you put on the print - particularly near the beginning and end of the run. Simply making the platters bigger isn't going to change the limitations set by the tensioners guiding the film to and from the projector, and Nolan surely knows this but he's pushed past a technical boundary he didn't think would come back to bite him.
    As you probably know, there are typically three platters in a standard projection booth - one for the supply and one for the take up, with a spare to hold the next film that's scheduled to run. The solution to this problem is incredibly simple: Split the film in half with each half on a different platter, and have a short intermission in the middle to provide time to re-thread the projector for part two. I don't think an IMAX (or even standard 70mm) projection booth exists anywhere in the world with two projectors that can facilitate making a live switchover at the break like they used to do back in the days before platters were developed and reels were still used, so an intermission is the best way to protect the film from damage.
    All the scratches and dust people are complaining about in the print are caused by the film spooling onto the floor. Film stock tends to hold an electrostatic charge, so it attracts dust and dirt like a magnet. Last I checked, projection booths don't qualify as "clean rooms" so any amount of film that winds up on the floor will forever lose its pristine "new print" look. It's not only ruining the experience of the film goers, it's ruining a print of the film that cost about $100K dollars to make. At least, that's what it recently cost Portland, Oregon's Hollywood Theatre to buy a print of 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm - I suspect an IMAX print is even more expensive.
    And all of this because for some reason we just can't stop the experience for 10 minutes in the middle? This was a common practice between the 1930s and 1960s when most films weren't even nearly this long and people accepted it as normal, and the reasons for why it's not anymore are complicated. It's stupid, sad, and costly on numerous fronts. I know a lot of people enjoy intermissions for a variety of reasons, so I think Hollywood needs to pull their heads out of their behinds on this because it's costing them more than they realize on epic-length films like this one.

I suggest to those people, have a strong cup of coffee and visit the bathroom just before you head into the movie. I'm a retired 73 year old 35mm (and digital) projectionist and lover of movies. I must admit I have trouble at times just staying awake watching TV in the evenings and sometimes have reservations about movies I watch in the cinema that are longer than two and a half hours. I watched Oppenheimer 2 days ago and found that it held my interest all the way through; in fact it just got better and better the longer it went on. This is a movie that may need to be seen at least a couple of times to really enjoy it. It will take concentration, but it will really be worth it. Splitting the film was exactly what they did for the IMAX 70mm 3D release of Titanic back in 2012. Titanic is even longer than Oppenheimer and, as a 3D film, it came on a whopping *4* massive platters. But of course, this requires an intermission to change platters.

      Star Wars was first presented on film. The second set of SW movies was digital. I don't see any further movement in film, digital just gets bigger, better and faster. Soon you, the average Joe, can grab a fairly high-res camera from Best Buy, any of many camera stores and even Amazon and produce professional quality looking movies on a home computer. It's getting to be that simple. I came from the age of film 35mm cameras. Today I am sporting some great Sony digital cameras that are so easy to use. @@bondgabebond4907 Film has made a huge comeback. It's no longer a consumer format. It's moved into the professional world. Why? Clients can "own" assets. There is a "negative" a physical asset. This is what ad agencies really like. They want the negative in their vaults where they know it's safe. Film has it's benefits; better dynamic range, better clipping, much nicer and smoother color science, soft but still crisp looking. To this day, digital has yet to completely copy film, it's just "different" and again, as you pointed out, ANYONE can buy a "digital" camera, so whats the point of film? To make you stand out in the crowd. Especially with projection of film that's been photochemically colored, it's a unique experience you can't get at home. Does it look BETTER than let's say a 8k shot, 4k presented HDR presentation with a laser projector? That's maybe a bad comparison, it just looks "different" and unique. As an IT guy, we deal in requirements and engineers quite a bit. To me, this sounds like IMAX was designed for what we are going to call Purpose A, with a runtime of Runtime A. The engineers, as good engineers do, built the equipment to deal with a much longer and more complicated Purpose B, and an extended Runtime B.
    What Christopher Nolan keeps doing is exceeding the original intended Purpose A, and exceeding Purpose B, to the point where we are now at Purpose E after going through C and D, as well as Runtime E.
    Unfortunately, when something as big and complex as an IMAX film track is built, "just making the platter bigger" is only a small piece of the engineering and requirements puzzle to make something work further than it ever has before.
    What is happening is effectively what happens when you overclock your computer, sure, it will work for a bit, but eventually, something is going to give, there's an upper limit of what it is capable of before you need to do a rebuild and improve all your internal gear for your computer to process faster and faster and keep cool... Same for the IMAX film projectors, they've far exceeded their designed abilities, and now we are seeing them literally pushed beyond their limits.
    Film was never designed to be an 11mile and 600lb reel, this is putting a lot of strain on components, that just aren't up to the task

It was also often used for film festivals and press screenings. We had a "double system" where we ran double-system, 1,000-foot cores where the picture and audio were on separate reels. We ran classic Norelco AA 35/70 projectors, the best film projectors ever made. I ran into my fair share of bad prints, film breaks, blown lamps, etc., etc. I do miss those days.
    With that said, I have to admit that I do love digital cinema cameras and digital projection. I do not miss one little bit all of the issues with film suck as bad prints, dirt, scratches, breaking prints, etc., etc. I love the images I can get with today's digital cinema cameras such as RED and Alexa. I saw it both in imax laser & 70mm film here's how they compare:
    *Imax Laser:* the colors are vibrant, the projection was incredibly bright & because of that the contrast ratio was so good giving you deep black levels, (it wasn't as black as oled displays but it still looks great, if you want a cinema experience similar to oled then I highly recommend dolby cinema) 4k resolution of laser projector looks good on imax screen & it was pretty detailed.
    *70mm film:* unfortunately it was not 15 perf that imax use instead it was 5 perf but the image quality still looks breathtaking, the colors still look beautiful & vibrant but not as good as imax laser, for the image quality this is the most detailed picture quality I've ever seen in a movie theater more detailed than imax laser, it was so detailed I can see the individual pores on the actor's face it's like meeting them in person.

    At 19 I was a manager at AMC Bell Plaza 8 in Phoenix and also had to run the projector booth. Dealing with film can get stressful indeed. This was many years ago also. I think most prints were delivered on Wednesday and you start building prints and adding trailers and loading it up on the platters to run through late at night to make sure everything is set before Friday. If the crew didn’t want to stay and watch a full movie then I would have to watch them all. Back then we didn’t get multiple prints of one movie. But we saw the incentive to have big movies playing in two houses if possible. We made this happen by splicing a super long lead and threaded the same print in two projectors. One time during a packed double house screening of Short Circuit (I said it was a long time ago) I realized that the 2nd projectors platter went out of sync and was just dumping the film onto the floor. A lot of film. 15 minutes worth, or more. I was sweating bullets. Somehow we got it corrected and all loaded back on the platter without having to stop the movie. Lol. Fun times.

    I booked tickets in the first screening of regular 70mm, IMAX 70mm is non existent here in Germany, the film looked beautiful. About 10-20 minutes into the movie the projector breaks down, and we proceeded with an digital version. At the end everyone in the audience received a voucher for another 70mm screening of Oppenheimer. I don’t know what the problem was but they weren’t able to fix it for the next screening that day. All in all I think it was vary interesting to see the comparison between the digital and analog projection and hey I pretty much got an free partly 70mm party digital screening of Oppenheimer.

    • @restitvtororbis5330
      @restitvtororbis5330 10 месяцев назад +9

      At least the theater tried to make up for it, though I don't know how those vouchers would work if the theater is sold out, but that's probably only going to be an issue the first few days if at all. From what I would guess based on what I've heard (as someone who has never worked with film, projectors, or theaters) the issues for imax in particular are probably because Nolan said that before filming even started he had to make sure that IMAX was even capable of making a 70mm film THAT LONG and they said it should be possible by pushing the projectors to their absolute limit. The weight of the physical film reel is apparently around 600 lbs, and that might be very close to the limit of what the projectors can hold and the motor to spin. I'm not sure if something like that would also apply to your 70mm non imax screening, but it's likely that those projectors are being pushed to the limit as well, and any improper maintenance over the years would be most likely to be exposed when the projector is pushing the limits of its capabilities. This is just a guess though

Obviously it was an opening night, premium experience so maybe they felt the need to compensate but I’m glad they did. Steve, who came in to address the theatre during the shut-down was really going above and beyond, chatting with people before and after the show, he said after he was legitimately running through the theatre trying to figure out how to get the film back up, and he offered to take a handful of people up to see the IMAX projection booth after. This was the most movie magic I’ve experienced at a Cineplex theatre in a long time. You’re right, it does feel like a special moment in time to be a part of. Having that back end to front end experience and knowledge -- something I think Tyler Stalman refers to as "full stack creator" -- means that the films aren't created in a void, and that there is intention when working within and pushing the boundaries of a creative endeavor. I appreciate the video for updating us all on the IMAX showings, and I’m sorry to hear about what you experienced. I have to say however, that having some issues like this, especially on opening night, isn’t avoidable. It’s kind of the whole thing, that 11 miles of 70mm-wide plastic is traveling over 6 miles per hour for 3 hours straight. Yes, it sucks when it has an issue. But a physical medium displaying a movie is simply impossible from having a hickup here and there. If you wanted absolute projection, you would go digital (speaking from running all formats EXCEPT 70mm IMAX over the years, I’ve had my fair share of digital issues too). In any case, I think looking at the bigger picture of how 27 or so theaters seem to have had little to no issues so far is a massive accomplishment. IMAX techs for the past several years have been resurrecting from the dead most of these projectors, and thanks to this showing should hopefully last more years.

    • @Bodi2000
      @Bodi2000 10 месяцев назад +4

      It's an IMAX thing. The film is sucked with vacuum against a glass piece to be in focus while a frame is projected, dirt particles will stick there. The glass gets moved up and down across cleaning bars every few seconds to remove them but some may stick really tight. The glass gets cleaned manually between shows and the wiper bars get new covers. But with a 3h film... dirt builds up. There are usually sticky dirt removing rollers just before the projector input but again they can be overwhelmed by a dirty 30 minute print or a reasonably clean 3 hour print. "Normal" 35mm or 5-70mm projectors do not have this glass, the film is all that's between the lamp and lens.

Being able to say I watched something like Makoto Shinkai's 'Suzume' in that theatre in particular feels special, even if it's kinda blurry when blown up to that size. Just watched this at scotiabank theatre Chinook in Calgary and I was told as I was entering the auditorium that the film projector was down and that it would be a digital presentation instead which wasn’t at all what I was looking forward to. Felt like a punch in the gut for sure but I guess glad to know the IMAX film projector near me isn’t the only one having issues.

    I was a projectionist about the same time you were. My first reaction to hearing that Oppenheimer was gonna screened in true 70mm IMAX I was like, "How?" Just a few years later I tried applying at another theater for projectionist and all the kids working there just stared at me like I was speaking gibberish. The manager then informed me that position doesn't exist anymore.

    there is only 1 IMAX 70mm theater here in NYC. ours ran ok but there were 2 times where the audio cut out randomly for like 5 seconds. other than that no issues. The issue lies within the theater, not nolan.

  • @singemfrc
    @singemfrc 10 месяцев назад +4

    I think you're probably right, your theater probably had some relatively newer projectionists who may not have done the best job putting the print together. Depending on where you are and how many pieces the reel arrived in, they have to splice together either a few giant reels (The one for my theater came in three large crates) or a few dozen small reels (over in England they were shipped in something like 60 boxes of 3 minute reels).
    My bet is one of the splices was not up to snuff, and as you mentioned they are supposed to do a test run the night before, and either didn't, or maybe it just held together the once.
    Funny you mention in Canada they flew your projectionist from California, as I'm in California and they flew the one who did my screening in from Missouri. He was telling me what a delicate job it was, and that it's so fragile that simply touching it wrong once put together could cause what happened at your screening.
    Also re: the audio - the audio tracks are a separate DVD disc (yes really) that plays along side the film and are set to sync by timecode, so untrained projectionists who didn't set this right would also explain the out of sync audio. (And improper splicing of the film I'm guessing could cause both)

    • @spikester
      @spikester 10 месяцев назад

      There were several videos that documented the splicing together of this film, they said you could lose up to 4 frames before you have to insert black ones to prevent losing audio sync.

    There's two cinema moments I'll never forget from the bygone analogue era.
    1) In 1996, I went to see "Independence Day" for about the third time, now weeks after release, and during one of the reels the picture started to weave a lot, and then the sound started to flutter, and this continued until that reel finished. Afterwards, I asked to see the projectionist (not to complain, but to find what had happened), and he showed me a big bucket of chewed up film where the projector had just eaten off the holes all down one side of the print. We laughed, and I said good job the film will be closing soon! ... But then it was so popular it showed for another month and my local cinema lost out!
    2) In 2005 I went to see a 20th Anniversary "Back to the Future" trilogy marathon, and halfway through BTTF 2, the reels changed and suddenly the picture was upside down and running backwards. Ooops - someone hadn't rewound that reel and was just projecting it tail first! I can't remember what scene led into the reel, but the reversed scene (so paradoxically, the end of the reel that was showing backwards) was Biff and Marty confronting each other in 1955 with Marty in the leather jacket and Biff realising Marty has taken the Almanac. "Nobody calls me ch-"

    I went to college in the 1980s, studying Film. Everything was analog. Dealing with film - both in the camera and with the negatives/prints - was always difficult. Digital has allowed for so much that was never possible. So many brilliant minds have been able to get into filmmaking because they’ve had access to technology that would’ve been prohibitively expensive a couple of decades ago. That’s all great!
    For me, the biggest improvement digital has made is in the viewing experience. Perfect picture and sound every time. No dirty prints. No scratches. No splices. No jitter. No pops, crackles, or synchronization issues in the audio. I HATE those problems. (I also hate surface noise on vinyl records and was THRILLED to get my first CD player in 1984.) I simply don’t understand the love for film prints. Had we had access to digital film equipment when I was in college, I’d probably be a director right now instead of a digital projectionist…

      Same with King of Prussia IMAX 15/70. The only "issue" which I am not sure if it was a projector issue or just inherent to the IMAX film projection (I don't recall seeing this issue with Dunkirk or Interstellar 70mm IMAX?) is a slight flicker sometimes, especially in areas or scenes where there was a lot of white, so mostly notable in the b&w Strauss scenes. Otherwise, yeah you could see some dust and very minor imperfections in the film print that flash by, but like the video creator said, that's kind of the charm of film projection.
      I'll probably go back in a few weeks to see it again in IMAX film with a center seat. The film looked great even off axis, but it must look monumental facing the screen straight on

    I saw it in 70mm imax at AMC lincoln square and it looked absolutely amazing. That being said I heard the thursday night previews were shown on digital because of some exhaust issue. It's been evident for years that most big movie chains don't care about projection quality anymore. I've seen so many films with old dim bulbs and 3d polarizers still left over the lens. Once you bought your ticket and popcorn most theaters don't care about the actual experience inside the theater and most moviegoers aren't savvy enough to realize when projection is off or too dim.

    Some extra background on the issue with the reels:
    The reels are 18,144 meters long (11.27 miles) and weigh 255kg (562lbs), making it the longest, and by extension largest and heaviest IMAX movie ever recorded.
    IMAX reels carrying Oppenheimer had to be modified by adding extra material to the edge, allowing for an extra 11 minutes of footage. Even with that extra reel capacity added, the film barely fits on the reel, and the reel barely fits in the projector.
    The shear size and weight of this movie is pretty much pushing projectors to their limit.
