You are doing God’s work, friend. I’m glad that directors like Nolan have helped kept traditional film alive. I sense that Oppenheimer will help push this further into the mainstream.
It's super quality work. But I dont why they don't wear gloves while handling such sensitive imax film. They are handling with bare hands without gloves while joining the reels . But some time they are wearing gloves as it shown in this video. But first guy dint.
As an old 35mm projectionist, and also as a fan visiting London in a couple of weeks mainly to experience my first 15/70 Imax screening, I was super happy to have this insight in the booth! And I am also happy to learn that the length of Nolan's movies has finally reached its physical limit! 😄
Phenomenal and beautiful editing on your production. I'm a former 35-mm IATSE union projectionist in the U.S. I come from the days of carbon-arc lamps and 15-minute reels. I left the business around 1983, when automation and platters were introduced and closed out my career in automated booths. Comparing this to what I've experienced, it's the difference between the Model T to an Airbus A380. I especially liked the zig-zag splicing technique to increase the contact surface. Pure genius thinking. I will be seeing "Oppenheimer" in 3 days but I believe our local IMAX house does not run print and, I assume, is digital IMAX. With projection what it is these days, I have a hard time imagining other than a highly-skilled technician putting together this amount of film and especially given the expense and the pristine treatment is must receive. Kudos to you and my booth brother in Kensington!
This video was absolutely brilliant. Thank you for making such a wonderful and in depth video on this process. Was brilliantly filmed and edited, great job! Have a great day. Can’t wait to see this film in 1570
@@NotMe-bk9oifirstly, I greatly appreciate that you said IMO. Imax dual laser certainly does look pretty darn brilliant. That’s very interesting that the sharpness was better in another cinema, perhaps it’s something to do with the kind of screen they are using? So much can go wrong with these screenings that it’s quite hard to tell these days.
thats what makes the projection difference.. it would be amazing to see this version.. I managed to watch it in IMAX but it was digital and not the 70mm, but I also did watch the 70mm not imax, and the combo of both would be mindblowing... the IMAX sound is what makes it, but the 70mm is definitely something your eyes should experience.
Fascinating! This was a revelation for me; I had no idea just how complex this process is. I'm looking forward to seeing "Oppenheimer" next week at the Chrysler IMAX Theatre in the MIchigan Science Center in midtown Detroit.
@michaelrogers2080 After seeing "Oppenheimer" yesterday at the Chrysler IMAX Theatre, with a curved and distorted image, fuzzy focus, and truly horrible seating, I can verify that I will indeed be happier watching the film in the eventual Blu-Ray edition at home on my 65 inch screen with Dolby Atmos. Shame on IMAX for permitting the presentation of the film in the Chrysler venue.
I am going to be watching Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm for the first time ever in Mississauga, Canada....I have fond memories of watching Dunkirk (my first IMAX movie), and it was just the best experience ever, even though it was digital IMAX.
Even tho I will only be able to see the regular 5 perf 70mm print, I am still really excited to see large format film being continued and hopefully having even more of a resurgence in the future! The theatre I will see it in is called Lichtburg (light castle) in Essen, Germany. It has a huge capacity seating over 1200 people and looks more like an opera house than a cinema with its 1930s styling and a huge balcony. It also has an actual stage and the biggest rolling screen in the whole of Europe. The stage originally was used for the orchestra back when silent films were still the norm. It was partially destroyed in WW2 and restored to its original appearance in the following years.
this is so cool, thanks for the video! i’ll be watching oppenheimer next week and it’ll be my first time watching in imax, much less 70mm, which is so exciting
You are most welcome! I'm sure that's going to be epic experience. By the way, I was so busy editing this video so I didn't book my tickets yet, not sure when I'm going to see it now 😂😂😂
I appreciate that the reel was blurred. Even if the scene on it was inconsequential, we're still getting absolutely no spoilers. Sadly, my city barely has a 35mm theater (alongside some digital imax) So no 70mm or 70/15perf for me 😭
IMAX - TLC CHINESE THEATER in Hollywood California. Thx 4 your vid on how this unusual print will be assembled and exhibited. Very glad you had a good time watching the process.
I'm seeing it at the Celebration Cinema in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Had to book tickets for a 11PM showing 2 weeks out as it's the first showing with a decent seat to pick from.
ugh...when I was much younger I used to work for a movie theater company in the US. I was eventually promoted to the office and I was taught how to do all of the film prep (build up/break down). It was my favorite part of that job.
I saw Oppenheimer on film at the Esquire IMAX theater in Sacramento, CA. I did go up to the booth and watch them handling the film between screenings. I also saw the movie on digital IMAX in my home town theater in Reno, Nevada (Galaxy Luxury Sparks). Due to my broadcasting career, I have been a SMPTE member off and on over the years. I lived in Rochester, NY for nearly 13 years and got to rub shoulders with a lot of film people there (and really cool tours/demos in the Kodak Park laboratories). Two regular SMPTE meeting attendees were IMAX projectionists, and always had a pocket full of film frames to hand out to the curious. Today, 30 years later, several of my friends are film enthusiasts. One of them ran the Library of Congress media center for many years. Like many others here, I hope that filmmakers with vision continue to shoot and release on film when this is possible. Like many other old but serviceable technologies, it would not surprise me if film eventually makes enough of a comeback to be something folks can occasionally encounter in the world of the big screen.
Thanks for the video mate, was a really well made and interesting look into the IMAX film process. Flying down to Melbourne this Friday to see the 70mm print, super excited!
I saw Dunkirk there on IMAX 70mm; it was great. The projector had been down for years; they didn’t use it for Tenet. Thankfully, IMAX fixed it for Oppenheimer.
I watched it on lot at Universal in hollywood in 70mm IMAX. It was quite the experience watching it at the studio who made the film as they had a ton of costumes from the movie on display in the lobby.
I do not missing doing IMAX assembly... not that I ever messed it up but was always freaked out I would. There was another untrasonic weld version of doing the assembly as well using the zigzag method allowed you to later disassemble the print if needed which is why it is the preferred method these days. Granted last time I worked on IMAX was like 33 years ago!
once again another great inside video of the imax film projection process. I have tickets for the only australian imax cinema currently (melbourne) and I'm really looking forward to experiencing this movie on 70mm.
Now can we please get a 4K/HD glimpse of how the film actually plays out in the theatres in 70mm IMAX glory , and now that the film is out on Digital and Physical Media, I believe getting a glimpse of the actual screen will no longer be an unethical commission.
As a former projectionist, I enjoyed this tremendously. The closest 70mm is nearly three hours away, so I must settle for the lesser IMAX screenings in my area. Saddest of all, we have a 4K dome IMAX in my town and they are not showing it. Very frustrating.
The closest 70mm IMAX theater by me is a good 7-8 hour drive. So, unfortunately I wont be seeing it anytime soon. HOWEVER, in a few weeks I'm traveling to Arizona to visit family, and I found out that there is one 70mm screen in Phoenix, which would be like an hour away from where I'm visiting. I'm gonna REALLY try to escape my family to go see this once in a lifetime viewing experience!
Man what a great quality this video and explanation is! I'm going to watch Oppenheimer in my city The Hague in one of the Pathé cinemas. Maybe that of Ypenburg or Scheveningen. Both have relax chairs nowadays. Or Pathé Spui in The Hague. I will watch the movie at least in IMAX and not less.
0:47 I love how almost all the cinemas are in US, there are some in Canada, three in UK, one in Australia and completely out of left field one in my hometown of Prague Czech republic :D
I’m looking forward to seeing one of the rare 70mm IMAX prints in San Francisco. Alas, I have to wait until August 9th because there are so many people also wanting to see it!
Really great to be able to view this. Thanks! Will possibly see this at the Imax theatre at Queen Street Auckland NZ. Which is one of their Lazer ones now. It was converted from 70mm several years ago if I recall correctly…….Laurie 😮😮😮😮😮
Thats nice of the Ronson theatre to allow you to record and present the process. I will be watching that print on opening night at the Science Museum, and also seeing the film at the BFI IMAX the following week. I cannot wait! Dunkirk, Interstellar and Inception were fantastic in 70mm.
Thanks for the video I did film repair/splicing back during my multi media/AV days back in college this is a whole new level. I am seeing the film at Cineplex Cinemas MIssissauga (Ontario, Canada) next Sunday afternoon.
This is super fascinating. I've never thought about how IMAX movies are cut, laced and played. I have a whole new appreciation for the work that is done by the projectionists. Unfortunately it isn't playing near me (New Zealand) but I'll be sure to check out an IMAX movie soon!
Nice video. To make sure everyone is on the same page - most imax movies are from a digital projector - this is specific IMAX 70mm which are only ~30 in the entire US. Every other iMax screen is on a digital projector.
Watched it at AMC Unversal city walk on Sunday. I can't recall the last time I saw film imperfection on screen in a theater ! I will try to go watch it again at the chinese theater in Hollywood. Of the 30 prints, there is 3-4 location in the Los Angeles area !
Thank you so much for this! I'll be seeing Oppenheimer tomorrow night in the Esquire IMAX in Sacramento (Mission Impossible tonight, in that same theater). I knew IMAX film was shockingly big, but I had no idea what it took to prep it for projection. I also had no idea our IMAX is one of only 30 in the world that can do this. Wow. I'm feeling rather blessed about now. Thanks!
Thank you for doing this. I'm a retired sound editor, and only worked with 35mm mag film. I never got the chance to "fondle" 70mm IMAX projectors and film, so this was great! In my career I had at least 2 films released in 70mm blowups (back when they did six-track magnetic sound) but seeing all this was amazing! I saw it at the Arizona Center IMAX theater in Chandler, AZ USA. (And let me add I did get to "fondle" one of two Cinemascope 55 cameras that Fox built...the film speed was so high that the pressure plate for the camera aperture looked like a huge yet tiny abacus, all these tiny rotating discs to reduce friction!)
Awesome video - thank you so much for sharing. I am going to the BFI IMAX, London for 08:10 and then the 14:00 at The Ronson on Friday 21st July - only a few days to wait now! I'll be thinking of all those reels as I watch it.
the nearest Imax to me is about 30 minutes away in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I may see it there or stay closer to home for a digital version. I do know they (Celebration Cinema North) had to fall back on their digital version for a bit as the Imax copy jumped the track in the projector and damaged about 15 seconds of the film. Supposedly a replacement copy of that portion of film was due to arrive this weekend.
Watching Oppenheimer at AMC Metreon in SF, it's the biggest full ratio IMAX screen in the United States and it's a 70mm IMAX print screening at that. I'm seeing a 2:30PM showing with my girlfriend and watching Barbie at 7:30PM. Spending my whole day at the cinema and I'm super excited!
I will drive two and a half hours from Melbourne, Florida, to Ft Lauderdale, Florida (150 miles / 240 km), to watch Oppenheimer on 15/70mm at the Museum of Discovery and Science. My wife and son only agreed to make the trip because I told them I wanted it for my birthday. 😉
I'm in Hungary, our one and only IMAX cinema opened in 2008 with 70mm film projectors, but very unfortunately they upgraded it to digital in 2011. According to your list, the closest 70mm IMAX to me is in the Czech Republic. Maybe, just maybe I'll visit it next year to watch this movie. Although it would be better now, until the film is fresh and not worn, but I have no chance to organize it this year. I've never seen a single IMAX movie, it would be nice to watch this one before the Czech movie closes or switches to digital.
I watched the movie at LieMax in Budapest, but I'm leaving for London on Friday, not specifically to watch it in 15/70 format, but since I'll be in the city, I definitely wanted to see it. I'm really looking forward to it.

Until they need to move the arms out. ;-) They can always do it the old school way, with multiple platters.
That's why we have intermissions. There is so much more to the Oppenheimer story. It could have been 4 hours.
Amazing video, thank you! I'm counting down the days till I get to watch Oppenheimer in Dublin, California

the nearest Imax to me is about 30 minutes away in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I'll be seeing this in Dublin, CA in glorious 70mm next week, can't wait!
Looking forward to seeing this movie the same day at BFI IMAX, which is slightly larger.
I have a love for the cinema and love working with film from my experiences in ndt inspection
This is exactly what I was looking for.
Fantastic video, thank you for the look at building Oppenheimer!
Already watched the film last night. I must say it is really worth it
I'm in Hungary, our one and only IMAX cinema opened in 2008 with 70mm film projectors, but very unfortunately they upgraded it to digital in 2011.
Incredible!
Do you really need to blur all four seconds of film seen on the table?
REEL 42!! That's nuts! For those not in the know, most movies that used to come in film cans were 6 reels TOTAL (for 35mm).
35mm reels generally contain about 10-15 minutes of film as opposed to the 3 or so minutes of IMAX film
Such a great video! That print is huge for imax.
Epic video!! Very insightful !!
Glad you enjoyed it
