Spot on, looking forward to part 2! I think I'm at somewhere around 600+ hours into GenU, and I've still got tons of quests I haven't done, events for special items I want to complete, armor sets to finish, and plenty of challenge left in the EX Deviants. Hell, I still need to finish the single player story quests. (I jumped right into multiplayer with friends on day one lmao!) I started with Tri, I''m playing through World right now and enjoying it, and Rise is about to take over my life... but GenU has not only become one of my top 5 games of all time, I still have incredible fun playing it.
I've played Monster Hunter since Tri, and after World, Gen U felt very welcoming, like going back home after a long time. It's great to see that Rise is taking some cues from the older games in its visuals and monsters, while keeping World's mechanical improvements, and Gen U's wacky hunter arts in the silkbind attacks.
I'm just starting to try to do what you've been doing on RUclips , I got to say I definitely respect the amount of work you put in much more now 10/10 keep it up man
My favorite weapon/style combo has to be adept hammer. Its just so aggressive and when you learn a monster you just don't take damage. I keep coming back to this game because of the multitude of ways to play
I've been playing gen since DS, Have over 1400 hours now. I love that there's so many monsters, and weapon options with styles and arts. The amount of weapons and armour I've crafted in that game would surprise people for sure...
I have to say, it really is a blast going backwards in the series. I just finished my playthrough of Monster Hunter Tri and it was surprisingly fun seeing what made it unique and how far the series has come since then. Underwater combat was a fun -- albeit woefully underexplored -- mechanic, the custom bowgun system was extremely interesting, and Tri being the game that introduced both Leviathans and Brute Wyverns had a great (albeit quite shallow) variety of monsters. However, combat was stiffer than in later iterations, having to straight up unlock the ability to craft Switch Axes and Longswords was tedious, and the lack of high rank made the game feel especially short. But I still enjoyed my time with it, and am looking forward to diving deeper into the series past with Freedom Unite.
I never played world before so it was hard to get used to the new move sets during the rise demo, but it did work in my favor. There were some habits I picked up in mhgu that helped in the rise demo. For example, I use critical juncture quite a bit in mhgu, so serene pose was a yes for me. Not many ls users like using serene pose due to the many counters ls already has, but because critical juncture was pretty much identical to it, I know how to use it effectively.
As a Charge Blade main, my favorite style of this weapon is Adept. The moveset loses almost nothing of interest, while giving Sword mode the Adept power guard (which shortcuts straight into red shield charge) and giving Axe mode the usual Adept dodge. (You can't combo from a guard point to AED either, but that applies to all CB styles equally.)
GU is definitely the MH game that just keeps giving, ive played this game for around 500 hours at this point and i feel like ive still only scratched the surface. Its definitely a fanservice for old players, so it might not be as easy for people who started with world to fully appreciate everything GU set out to do, but its definitely still a solid recommendation for them imo, its just too damn fun!
I started in World. I heard about some older mechanics that were phased out like limited whetstones and bug nets, and the skill system. What I WASN'T prepared for was paying for hunts. It makes sense lore wise, but I just didn't realize why I couldn't do certain hunts.
I 100% agree with the gratification felt from making the perfect build in GenU. I managed to come up with a G-Rank Crit Eye+2, Sharpness (handicraft)+2, Load Up, Artillery Expert build with the Diablos CB which was one of the strongest raw attack CBs in the game and it felt SOOOOO GOOD. Now I’m studying mechanical engineering.
Im the type of player that plays monster hunter to destress, ive been a hunter since generation 1. World and Rise pushed Monster hunter into the mainstream and im so happy it did. Rise was an amazing game still is. Rise puts the perfect spin on Monster hunter combat. making it faster and more action packed. World had its fair share of problems. the Cluthclaw being one of them. MH4U and MHGU is always the games i come back to when im looking for that OLD school hunting exp. its simply a fantastic game series.
G and GU was an amazing experience. I went from Adept SnS, to Striker SA(before it got nerfed in GU), to Valor GS to Valor LS. This game had so much variety with just the weapons and styles and focusing your armor skills around your weapon/style combo was incredibly fun.
This is probably the best video recommending MHGU I've ever seen. As someone who has played over 1k hours of Gen+GU I can instantly relate to pretty much everything you said. The accuracy and attention to detail in this video is truly praiseworthy. It's rare to find someone who has put enough time into this and really knows what he's talking about. Massive props man, looking forward to part 2
I tried to play it after getting rehooked into MonHun by World (used to play Tri) and since no one brought this up; the clunk getting started is nearly unbearable :") the tutorial took 2 hours and the loading times between areas were absolutely unspeakable when i got lost trying to return to the camp. i ended up just dropping it entirely and havent been able to get back into it. this is the main flaw of MonHun before Worldborne i feel; ps2 era clunk that has not been changed since. the flare and character more than make up for it, but trying to get hooked is extremely difficult and puts many off. World fixed this, but lost so much of the style and character in its Worlds and Monsters that made MonHun so special . . . but Rise looks to have brought it back! heres to crazy ass monsters, baby! for real though, great vid! thanks for the lowdown! 🤘
I actually had GenU for a while, but I never was able to get into it until I finally understood the playstyle for valor and adept styles, and I finally figured it all out. I have to say, the monsters I've fought is truly wonderful
I found Switch Axe to be insanely good with Adept style. It perfectly coveres the Switch Axes lack of mobility and evasion options as well as giving you quick and powerful combos after the dodge.
Love your videos and streams. I hope you also make a part 3 with all the grievances you or other people might have, as a send-off to old Monster Hunter.
I can't agree more about the old armor system! Back then everyone have their own different armor sets because talismans/charms are very unique to each player and in World/IB it feels like everyone's just using the same armor sets with only different layered armors slapped into it. I miss that RNG of getting that godly charm to completely build that Challenger+2/WEx godly set you've been wanting to! God how many hunters have been guided by Athena's ASS (Athena's Armor Set Search system).
A note about Aerial Style: Apex Gaming has a great video about it, but it is not a style focussed on merely mounting. While on the surface it may look that way the aerial vault which replaces your normal dodge roll is a potent counter, letting you turn monster attacks into openings for massive, stylish counterattacks depending on the weapon. Not only that, but depending on the weapon it allows you to go hyper aggressive if you know the monsters attacks and timings well enough (did you know you could vault off of Glavenus tailspin? Or Rathalos poison dive?). Of course it depends on the weapon; some have their best moves or even critical combopieces locked behind the vault (Longsword), but it doesnt change the fact that it allows you so much freedom to be as aggressive as you can be. My go-to Weapon-Style combination is Aerial Insectglaive, and boy does the longvault make a difference. Anyway, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/RZV_6AyOz6o/видео.html
I've always had a tough time getting into Gen U because of the slow beginning. I remember that you basically had to wait until the volcano area to begin crafting cool weapons. Something about needing a certain stone or oar that almost every weapon required
I played maybe 20 hours of gen ultimate after world came out and went back to World/iceborne for awhile. Now that im craving rise so much, ive popped back in and have been playing a ton. Up to 5 star quests and have just been fighting Laggiacrus over and over as its my favorite monster in the series and i missed it dearly in world
Guard Up and Mighty Bow can now be bought at trhe elder melder for quite some time. This change illustrated perfectly why the deco system was more flawed than the talisman system
By the way, a cool detail is that Nercylla kill Gypceros and wear their skin. when you break the Gypceros skin off Nercylla's thunder resistance drops.
Imo the biggest difference and what makes the older games ultimately shine more than their newer counterparts is the game tempo. In IB/Rise you pick the quest, you run to the monster and beat it in flashy style. In GU you pick the quest, then you're immediately decelerated because you have to look for the monster, then it picks up when you fight it, then it decelerates again when you have to chase after it, which lets you check your inventory, reflect on the fight and what not. It gives time for stuff to sink in. Then the fight reaccelerates when you fight the monster. Imo a pretty perfect balance that has been completely dropped by newer iteration Monster Hunter games. The newer games are much more engaging, but GU- is a much more wholesome gaming experience. Really makes you feel like a hunter strolling the lands looking for big monsters, as opposed to the fighter you become with the newer generations.
That maccau is giant btw Oh yea, when you do valor counter into running sweep for long sword, you dont need to run. To prevent running, just press the same button you normally would without holding the stick (let it go). That method of not moving too much is the same for many weapons such as for aerial style.
couple addition style rec's, that you didn't put in your video: Valor Insect glaive: best version of having you kinsect fight with you (plus it's my second fav style combo only behind aerial IG) Striker SnS: Basically guild SnS but with three hunter arts, and all SnS hunter arts are incredible Valor DB: allows you to be really aggressive while keeping your sharpness at max
I love making meta sets that reach the utmost peak damage numbers possible but I also love to make my own "comfy" builds with speed eating for example, etc. That's the fun of mh
I’ve been playing this game as my first mh game and I’ve still haven’t beaten my first EX deviant or mastering all the weapon that I main in Mhw, I’ll probably play more mhgu when I get more Nintendo online I’ll probably play rise and it on the side now that I beat the story and I’m in post game beating crimson Fatalis and building my craft
@@HandiTips the game is just that good lol 😂, honestly the only reason I stopped playing was because I had no Nintendo online, as soon as I get rise and some Nintendo online, I’m back in action on this game, the deco system is simplistic and everything feels challenging to a certain degree idk how anyone couldn’t get hooked on this game
11:12 I would also add Striker to the Lance as well. It's the one style that gives you back the classic triple poke combo, and the Lance specific Hunter Arts Like Screw Thrust and Enraged Guard
What I miss about early-mid game of Gen is my whole approach to small personal goals. I'll see something I want to build, plan out how I'll grind that monster for it, plan out a whole set to most efficiently hunt that particular monster, craft that set out, repeat the whole process if building said set will also take some grinding... but now there's way more one-size-fits-all sets, and such expanded flexibility of skills to the point that armor sets barely even matter most of the time. I hope Rise locks it down a bit more again, goes way harder on elemental damange, status effect resistance and infliction, maybe even have more monsters that are best fought with particular weapon types to push you to try stuff outside your comfort zone. Too much flexibility and accommodation to every single hunter and their preferred hunting style, and the entire incentive for the game loop breaks down.
Considering the huge time investment that MH games demand, I'd suggest to take this video with a whole shaker of salt. It's easy to say that having played it is good, but jumping in right now when we don't even know which monsters and other elements are in Rise is premature and can lead to highly undesirable situations, like not having enough time to play either game properly, or having to force through GenU too fast with Rise breathing down your neck. GenU is already old. It won't get much older even if you play it _after_ Rise. You don't _need_ to play it _before_ Rise.
I never even noticed or thought about that detail with Nerscylla. That's pretty cool honestly. Leave it to the Monster Hunter devs to bring in little details like that.
The only reason why I can't go back is the loading between zones and the stationary item usage. These things didn't bother me in 4U and Gen, but World spoiled me. I absolutely want to go back eventually though. I never understood why Capcom waited so long to bring GenU to the West. But, they announced World before they brought GenU to the West, and I decided if I was going to buy a new system a PS4 was a better investment than a Switch. Capcom dropped the ball (somewhat) with sitting on GenU.
Alchemy I found to be more focused around support and the special SP mechanic. One of two Hunting Styles that can equip three Hunter Arts at once, but the only one that can SP all three.
when Rise was announced I actually decided to pick up Gen U on sale cuz I wanted to play and get adjusted to MH on Switch. World was my first MH game so going to Gen U took some adjusting.
I love world because of its improvements and also that the game is just a stunning game to look at but Gen u also has that nostalgic vibe I adore from the older mh games, it's such an awesome game I always love to come back to
Just a heads up to anyone play GU: the game runs at 30 FPS due to the particle effects from Hunter Arts, which is half the speed of 4U and World. 3:20 I don't mind builds being like this, but I hate that you need min maxed builds just to have a chance at killing Fatalis or meeting Alatreon's DPS check for Escaton Judgment. 6:04 You can meld those decos in Iceborne now so it isn't a big deal.
Going back in the games will make you a better hunter. One of the things with world is that it adjusts for solo play. In the portables you have village (solo) hunting hub and gathering (multiplayer) hunting hubs. The gathering hub is weighted for multiple hunters, so you are soloing a 4 man weighted hunt, and the village hub usually stops at low rank or high rank if its an "ultimate" version of the game. Trust me if you go into 3U, 4U, or GU and solo yourself into G rank you will be a competent hunter. Will you be a world class speed runner? No but you will be capable of fighting anything the game throws at you and you will also become a more competent teammate in multiplayer. I vastly prefer playing with teammates but solo hunting, especially gathering hub hunts, just sharpens your skills so much more than online. Its easier to get by when 3 other people are picking up your slack. For those going into Rise worried about solo hunts its really not that bad. Also you can go online and get end game gear and then go back and blow through all but the last few village missions. The last villages missions will still test your competency. I just finished Out of the Fry Pan in Generations (Arena hunt - start with Deviljho with high HP and then fight Tigrex and Narga at the same time) it was a good achievement to show me that I still had the magic. Playing the village or solo in general will generally teach you to take your time and not get greedy. To win you first have to not lose. Beaucoup DPS is great as long as you don't triple cart out of the hunt.
Really looking forward to part 2. Although Generations wasn't my favourite game in the old style, having to restart after losing my save file put me off, but I'm getting more enjoyment out of Generations Ultimate than Iceborne recently. World is great but GU and it's variety of monsters is more than enough to keep me happy playing even after Rise comes out
Generations is fantastic I'm playing through it now although I don't expect to finish before Rise arrivesIt is however nice to get a taste of what Monster Hunter was in the old generation
I remember getting destroyed by tigrex in Freedom Unite when I was 5. One little step gets your health down by half. I loved the feeling when I first beat that annoying congolala too. Now World/Iceborne was pretty easy...
Yes we need more players! I require team mates to farm the event white Fatalis for its GX armour... Not a single soul online has qued up for that hunt with me in ages and I still need it done... 😞
You sort of nailed it for me with regards to things like builds compared to World/Iceborne. While there's nothing wrong with it I always felt that emphasis on affinity skills in Worlds hyper-optimised meta sort of ruined more creative builds. Especially late game MR its just so easy to stack skills and get +90-100% affinity (usually combined with masters touch). I love ol reliable crit hammer but I like having a nice balance of skills, yet everyone ends up running the same couple of skills because they're just too good and it's just kinda boring after a while.
I played 4U and Gen Ultimate after World and they still felt as if I was still playing world for me. My first MH is the original version on PS2 though.
That monster you blurred out is probably a favorite for me. I know exactly what it is, and honestly. I just loved fighting it. I'm still trying to figure out what style and weapon I wanna use, bouncing between SnS and LS, and I'm in G2 lol
As a relatively new hunter, I really want to get into GenU, with the varying styles, monsters, and builds, but the only thing is that hub quests are a bit jarring to me. I want to prove myself versus each monster before going online, but the hardest quests are locked behind multiplayer health scaling. I love hunting with others online, but would like to play solo first. Is doing this an acceptable/fun way to do the majority of quests? I need advice.
@@Zyckro all mh games can be done solo I solo'd all of freedom unite, freedom, and 3U. There's a more heavy focus on preparation and having the right armor and elemental weapons due to no scaling, however if you solo you still have both your palicos which do provide plenty of help with the right builds.
I myself am a solo hunter mostly (Sometimes I hunt with my little brothers who I invited to the game) and I can tell you this: There isn't a monster you can't kill alone. Mind you, there will be a wall here or there that would be easier with more bodies to throw at it, you might get wrecked by a Rajang here or Deviljho there, but EVERY monster can be done alone. I can speak for myself, there is a satisfying feeling seeing that quest complete screen after killing a really tough or difficult monster. Besides, don't forget, its a game. YOU want to solo the monsters first before joining online, that should be all that matters. Play the game the way that makes it come alive for you, every hunter has their own style and there's room at the table for many types.
100% agree with this! Generations Ultimate was such a damn good game with all it's mechanics and monsters as well as being a fantastic send off to the classic monster hunters! :D

It's great to see that Rise is taking some cues from the older games in its visuals and monsters, while keeping World's mechanical improvements, and Gen U's wacky hunter arts in the silkbind attacks.
You can mount a monster?
Sounds like my honeymoon.
Your username 👌
I just killed my first Malfiesto, and that beautiful owl bastard, had better be in Rise.
I'm just starting to try to do what you've been doing on RUclips , I got to say I definitely respect the amount of work you put in much more now 10/10 keep it up man
Greatsword or HBG +Adept style was my jam! I was practically invincible with that
Appreciate the Great Maccao shoutout! I love that guy so much
My favorite weapon/style combo has to be adept hammer. Its just so aggressive and when you learn a monster you just don't take damage. I keep coming back to this game because of the multitude of ways to play
You blurring out that Elder Dragon didn't stop me feeling the pain of farming it
I love how you sneaked in a little nibblesnarf bash😂
I've been playing gen since DS, Have over 1400 hours now. I love that there's so many monsters, and weapon options with styles and arts. The amount of weapons and armour I've crafted in that game would surprise people for sure...
It’s one of those timeless games that you can always go back to and sink hundreds of hours into. Great game
@@SunBro_Talos yes people still play Freedom unite till this day and i’m still in a very active FU community right now.Truly a timeless piece
Way ahead of you. Started playing about a month and a half ago. Just beat Valstrax and it was one of the most fun hunts I've ever done.
Sounds like a hidden gem that I need to try out! Thanks for the info.
My favorite part of Generations Ultimate will always be Prowler Mode running around as a cat and wrecking monsters is a lot of fun.
This is how I played GU's online 70-80% of the time! Even in Deviant X runs! So fun!
No lie. Had a bit of a rough time getting into it since it’s my first Monster Hunter, but I still made it in 30 hours without even realizing it.
I can't be the only one who use adept GS to recreate that generation opening scene
the blurred out poison clouds makes me remember certain trauma with a certain elder dragon lol
I started in World. I heard about some older mechanics that were phased out like limited whetstones and bug nets, and the skill system. What I WASN'T prepared for was paying for hunts. It makes sense lore wise, but I just didn't realize why I couldn't do certain hunts.
That’s not really something that becomes a problem though. At least I’ve never run into it.
You get the money back anyway
With the amount of promotion and praise you give the game in this video, I expect Capcom to send you a check for a job well done.
Building mixed sets was the best thing for me in this game
Athena's ASS saved our asses a lot of time in building these sets.
This is the high-quality MH content I've been looking for!
Up to 5 star quests and have just been fighting Laggiacrus over and over as its my favorite monster in the series and i missed it dearly in world
Great content as always handi! Keep up the awesome content brother!
Number one reason to play older games: offering yourself on a platter when drinking.
That maccau is giant btw
Oh yea, when you do valor counter into running sweep for long sword, you dont need to run. To prevent running, just press the same button you normally would without holding the stick (let it go). That method of not moving too much is the same for many weapons such as for aerial style.
I started with World, loved it, got Rise, loved it, and now I ordered Gen U. I can't wait to play it!
Remember when you had to stand still and flex after drinking a potion?
Those were the days lol
500 hours and still havent completed a third of the deviants.
Sounds about right 😅
the grind is real
HR 999 and still have 4 EXs to do.. still kinda scared.
couple addition style rec's, that you didn't put in your video:
Valor Insect glaive: best version of having you kinsect fight with you (plus it's my second fav style combo only behind aerial IG)
Striker SnS: Basically guild SnS but with three hunter arts, and all SnS hunter arts are incredible
Valor DB: allows you to be really aggressive while keeping your sharpness at max
I said this myself! I guarantee I'll still have Gen U as a side piece when Rise comes out. 😂
Getting that Red Big Crown next to your name is very satisfying.
Praise Bloodbath.
You don't _need_ to play it _before_ Rise.
saw purple smoke in the blurred out monster. yep. it's that monster.
btw, I main adept bow sub adept GS.
Theirs only one Elder dragon that spews purple smoke in monster hunter.
I actually played all the way through g rank as a bomb prowler. This game is nutty
when Rise was announced I actually decided to pick up Gen U on sale cuz I wanted to play and get adjusted to MH on Switch.
I wonder who’s still going to play mhgu now that rise is just days away...
Ive been playing generations ultimate on a new 2ds xl thanks to the modding community translating it
ITS SO DAMN FUN
Really looking forward to part 2.
Although Generations wasn't my favourite game in the old style, having to restart after losing my save file put me off, but I'm getting more enjoyment out of Generations Ultimate than Iceborne recently. World is great but GU and it's variety of monsters is more than enough to keep me happy playing even after Rise comes out
Haven't played gen u in a hot min so i wasn't prepared to see 10 phials on CB
Generations is fantastic I'm playing through it now although I don't expect to finish before Rise arrivesIt is however nice to get a taste of what Monster Hunter was in the old generation
I remember getting destroyed by tigrex in Freedom Unite when I was 5. One little step gets your health down by half. I loved the feeling when I first beat that annoying congolala too. Now World/Iceborne was pretty easy...
Yes we need more players! I require team mates to farm the event white Fatalis for its GX armour... Not a single soul online has qued up for that hunt with me in ages and I still need it done... 😞
OMG when i heard the name Gaijin my body moves by itself and it smashed the like button and the subscribe button😂
0:44 you could mount in MH4.
MH3U and previous were the ones where you couldn't mount.
I started with Rise and then went to GU cause I learned about MH from Rise and I’m so glad I went and played Gu to experience the old monsters
Just built the Kecha Wacha X set for my hunting horns, and wow yah evade extender feels like a fun
new different way to play
The elder dragon you blurred out I recognize that smog you have excellent taste in Elder Dragons.
Looking to pick this up soon when I finish rise. Never played it but looks great and similar to my personal favorite 4 ultimate
The best part of GU, I've played this game about nearly 800+ hrs and I still feel myself like a noob.
Absolutely. Loads of people play through the hub solo. It’s not easy, but entirely doable.
Although I’d still recommend doing village quests first.
@@CaptainEffort Thanks! The validation means a lot to me!
