  • This Sonata was published in 1802 with the title "Grand Sonata", and this wonderful work surely deserves this title. It is dedicated to Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, just like the famous Pathetique Sonata, Op. 13. Ludwig van Beethoven used this sonata as an experimental work, as he uses new material and concepts. The first movement is different from past sonatas, as it replaces the traditional Sonata-Allegro structure with a Theme and Variations. Each of the five variations is different in mood, speed, and character. This sonata is Beethoven's first that includes pedaling indications. It is also the earliest sonata with Beethoven's autograph (the hand-written manuscript). This performance is by G. Smith. Enjoy!

You are correct, Sonata No. 4 was titled "Grant Sonata." However, Beethoven also published this sonata with the same title. The sonata was only later nicknamed "Funeral March" because of the third movement. The title page of the first edition can be found at this link:

Huh, didn't know that. Sorry then. Lovely piece. I always love when it also has the sheet music.
