    Great video. We were in Laos a few years ago, before the train line opened, and it was total chaos trying to get to Vientiane from Luang Prabang on a minivan. I'm glad the new train has made traveling through the country more comfortable. We enjoy your videos and look forward to watching your content from Mexico.

      The train system there is amazing, but we did hear some "adventurous" stories about the minivan system from people we met there. Needless to say, we are glad the bullet train is open and look forward to all of the stops opening up 🚂 Thanks for leaving us such a thoughtful comment 🙌

    You guys are so free spirited, I would never be capable of traveling with so many unknowns. I need certainty so I don't freak out. Quite the adventure.

      Alicia is a huge planner too, and for her, the uncertainty is not ideal. But after traveling for the last three years, we have definitely built up our tolerance, and acceptance, of the unknowns 😅 It's not always perfect, but it definitely keeps us on our toes.

    It is not a bullettrain because the max. speed of the train is 160 km per hour or 100 miles per hour!

    Its a shame you couldn't travel down to explore the southern part of Laos. Its even more laid back than the north.
    The windows of the trains in Laos and Thailand must be very clean as the window cleaning lady who made an appearance in the video of you travelling by sleeper train in Vietnam didn't turn up in this episode.
    When travelling as a couple on second class on Thai sleeper trains I recommend booking both the lower and the upper berths in the same position. That way you have the seats on the same lower berth until they make up the beds. Also when you wake up in the morning you can cuddle together on the lower bed until they convert them back into seats.
    I have found that wearing eye masks and earplugs helps ensure a better nights sleep on sleeper trains.
    If you can get a seat once all the Chinese start travelling then taking the Lao train all the way into Yunnan in China is going to be a great experience.

      It is a shame, but I hope we will make it back to Laos one day to explore more 🇱🇦💛
      And what a great call back (made our day) 😀 The window cleaning lady didn't make an appearance this time, but I don't think we've seen the last of her either 😂 Thanks John 🙌

    SRT is the State Railway of Thailand, a state enterprise, with more than 150 years history since King Rama V. SRT is the biggest landlord in Thailand as all the stations and nearby land belong to it. In those days, land was cheap and the state allocates plenty of land to the SRT including the now high-value Chatuchak Weekend Market, the largest open market in the world. SRT is running at a loss since its inception and the successive governments have to allocate annual budget to supplement SRT's revenue. If SRT did not earn lucrative rent revenue at Chatuchak Market and Central Latphrao Mall, its annual losses would be even much more than at present. SRT's 3rd class ticket is one of the cheapest in the world, a huge bargain. Apart from normal train run on diesel engine, SRT also runs 2 electric trains in Bangkok, the Red Line to the suburbs (North and West) and Airport Link from Suvarnabhumi airport to the heart of Bangkok.

    You kept Kip banknotes with you before you left Laos, but saying this is the 1st time we're pulling out money since we've been traveling ---> What's that about? Why don't you exchange more Thai Baht when in Laos? No country wants to exchange Kip, it's one of the most floating exchange rates, rn. That officer is really kind to accept Kip money to help you for your unprepared travel and he has to change money into Thai Baht later and has high chances of getting less money.

    • @ThePassportCouple
      @ThePassportCouple  Год назад +2

      Great points and happy to clarify. We always keep a small amount of money from every country we travel to. It's a souvenir of sorts. And, it is the first time, I (Nate) have pulled money out since we started traveling. Alicia is usually the one that pulls money out of the ATM for us. The office was very kind to us, we agree. We were very grateful for his understanding. And we did consider that the exchange rate may not be as strong later on, which is why we left extra Kip, in addition to the calculated exchange he showed us, to help offset that. I hope this helps clarify. Thanks for watching and taking time to leave us a comment. It means a lot to us 🙌

    • @mtha7796

      @@ThePassportCouple Why don't you exchange more Thai Baht when in Laos? you know you're gonna be in Thailand in the late evening and money-changing shops will be closed.

    • @mtha7796
      @mtha7796 Год назад

      @@ThePassportCouple And I don't know if there's any money-changing shops in Thailand that accept Kip, that means the only choice that officer has is him go to Laos to spend money. So extra Kip that you gave him means nothing, he has to spend more money than he should. I don't believe you don't realize about this and used a shortcut way to exchange money.
