I've seen a bunch of Jesus movies in my life but no Jesus movie has ever captivated me more than Passion of the Christ. It is without a doubt the best depiction of Jesus Christ in the final 12 hours of His life. I'm not ashamed to say, both as a Christian and as a movie lover, this is literally the only movie in my life that made me cry especially the scenes from the scourging to the crucifixion. All of which really caught me off guard. I'd definitely watch this again and show it to friends who are genuinely curious about who Jesus was in life.

I'm still amazed at how most people think the messages of Christ aren't focused enough in this movie. I just saw it again last night and I have to say I forgot how heartfelt the movie actually is when you pay close attention to its dialogue, narrative, and visual language.
Jesus was always shown as an imposing figure, allowing himself to be beaten down to achieve his ultimate goal in the redemption of sins without ever giving in to the Devil's constant temptations of surrender. He even says so in one of the flashbacks. He decides wether to lay down his life or not, and he chose to do so to grant eternal life to everyone, even his enemies.
In the beginning you can see him afraid of what he knows is coming, with the Devil trying to talk him out of it with no avail. Throughout the clips from The Last Super, his relationship with his mother, his defending of Mary, his constant prayers while being tormented and physically beaten down mercilesly by seemingly everyone... the movie makes it clear constantly that Jesus always chooses to focus on the good of mankind, and even though some of the guards are perceived as bloodthirsty monsters, Jesus still rises up for them everytime he gets beaten up to keep on carrying that cross to fulfill his destiny as the Son of God.
Every quote Jesus gave to his followers is allowed to be exemplified throughout Jesus' sacrifice for humanity. Not a single line is gone to waste, and that helps us both empathize and admire the character the way Christians do. Its much easier for people already on board with the religion to feel spiritually lifted by this film because it practically validates their faith with every drop of blood dropped, but even not followers can watch this movie and get a detailed, understandable glimpse of the man Christians hold so close to their hearts.
"The Passion of the Christ" is a movie with a clear Christian message, but that's also accessible to everyone that's able to find the significance to all the bloodshed, precisely because its messagrs are so moving, they can provoke reactions on anyone.
Mel Gibson said in an interview that he tried to find the lyricism to all the whipping and violence. My take is that every lashing and physical punishment he received represents one sinful person: one he was redeeming and granting eternal life through his death, even if that person hates him. The burden of sin is too heavy to bear for any man, Satan said in the beginning. Jesus took it all and gladly announced "It is accomplished!" in the end. This movie is all about the ultimate example of love and sacrifice, and it is one of the better films I've ever seen in my life.

I'm so impressed by and greatly respect your extensive wealth of knowledge of Christianity, the Bible, the Biblical characters' speeches and their historical context, etc. And you say everything in a very humble way. It's also amazing how much unbiased detail you go into explaining the good and bad aspects of the film - like the amazing technicalities of filming and the nuances of the director. This was so educational. Please keep making videos!

I distinctly remember when Passion of the Christ first came out.
It was the summer of 2004, and I was 5 years old and on summer vacation in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with my parents and then 2 year old sister. It rained for quite a bit that summer and my parents were trying to keep their two small children occupied during the vacation.
We were taken to the movies to see (I think) Shrek 2, and I think I may have seen some ads for Passion of the Christ on TV and saw a poster for the movie, and I was intrigued. I asked my parents if we could go. They wisely said no, because at 5 years old, I was waaaaaaay too young to understand what was going on and would probably get nightmares from it.
I, like Jim Caviezel, was also raised Catholic, though my family was nowhere near as devout as Caviezel was/is. We were liberal Jesuit Catholics who rarely went to church. My parents also didn’t shove religion down our throats and were tolerant of all religions.

I mean, I was 5 years old. At 5 years old, you don’t know much about the world.
My parents had grown disillusioned with the Catholic Church as a result of the wide reaching priest molestation scandal (I do have an adult second cousin, Steve, who is a Catholic priest but who would NEVER harm a fly and is as gentle and nice as one can be) among other things is probably why we didn’t go that much. We’re also not that religious.
It’s strange how bizarre this movie was for me as an adult.
Now I wasn’t sheltered per se, I just didn’t have a grasp on adult concepts.
I didn’t know what anti semitism was, or what the term controversy even meant.
Jim Caviezel was born the same year that my parents were-1968. Crazy to think that now.

Wow what a great review!!! Seriously very good attention to detail and observations. While this film is not fully biblically accurate it has a very special place in my heart.
My friend i heard from this vid however that youre not sure if there is a god, that you might be afraid if he is and i would like to briefly talk about that ,if you would kindly read this i would appreciate it. I understand your doubts but the truth is he is real . This god created you and i with purpose and dignity. I refuse to believe that the universe came to exist by some freakishly lucky accident. I believe that every creation has a creator, that he created you and every piece of your being to have a purpose. For each organ in you to be in the right spot working a specific order, perfectly coexisting with the rest of your body, . It would take an intellectual being to create something as perfect as that blueprint. The world in its base is in complete harmony with itself. With its animals, its terrain, its vegetation. The laws of logic work perfectly with eachother. My friend our creator has a brilliant mind, how can you look at this world and not see that its creator left his mark to be noticed. I refuse to agree that you and everyone else that is reading this comment, that they are not special and are instead some cosmic accident.
The God of the bible is perfect and good. This means that he is a perfect judge. We have all sinned in our hearts, we all know it as we all have a conscious. Its built deep within us. We have broken the law and God being the judge he is has to punish those who deserve it. We are not worthy and cannot redeem ourselves to him. God may seem harsh, but while he is just, he is also very loving. He loved us so much that he came to this world as a man. Lived a perfect life according to his law and died serving as the ultimate example. To be specific he took the penalty and wrath that we deserve. He took our sins upon his shoulders. Only he could do it as the Father did not want us to be punished. He loves us so that he took all his wrath on Jesus and so through his death, our sins died with him. Through him there is forgiveness, God no longer sees our wicked deeds, but the blood attonement for those who believe Christ did this for you and accept it.
You need Jesus my friend, we all do. We all deserve hell because we have failed the moral law. But the free gift of life is there if you would just take it.
Thats why i love this film. People speak of Jesus with his wise lessons and sacrifice. But this film does its best to show you what they mean by sacrifice . Its personal and shows you that true love IS sacrifice, for if a loving act has no real sacrifice than it is not real love. I ask that you repent and accept Jesus as your saviour, as we cannot save ourselves. God bless you sir wonderful video and opinion, sorry for going off like that Lol. but you really touched me and its my duty to share the gospel(good news). Do not trust religion. Trust only Jesus with your life and in the eyes of the Lord you are saved, AMEN.

I do agree the film was a bit intense for my taste though I appreciate Gibson going back and doing the 2005 Recut version since less intense helped me focus more on the acting from Maia Morgestern, Jim Cavizel, and the person who played Pilate. It is more detailed than the rest of the Gospel story because the apostles kept talking about it in their evangelism before they wrote his whole life down on parchment.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; all things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Cor 5:17
God gives the very best to those who leave the choice to Him.
Have you surrendered your life to Christ? Pray to God and give Him all the bad things in your life: your hurts, disappointments, fears, failures and sins. Give them to Him and leave them with Him. Let Jesus Christ heal you inside and forgive you and cleanse you. He will change you and turn your sorrows into joys and your fears into peace of heart and mind. Submit to Him and He will give you a new direction in life.
“Repent and…be baptised in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38
Jesus Christ gives us a new start in life and a new life to start. You not only need to surrender all your sins and failures to Him, but all the good things that He has entrusted to you as well: your talents and your abilities, your plans and your opportunities, your energy and your time, as well as your love.

I totally agree. I loved him in the movie, Dragged Across Concrete. He's getting on a bit now, and i read he's worth around 425 million dollars. Doubtful he's that worried about hurting the feelings of todays outrage mob. Best thing Mel can do is stay away from the booze. He has acted like a total ass hole in the past when he was drinking, but so have most people (i know i have). Plenty of Hollywood actors have had their rough patches and meltdowns. None of them are angels. Most celebrities/actors today annoy the hell out of me. I just wish they'd keep their political opinions to themselves and get on with acting, including Mel.

Never fails to annoy me when accusations of antisemitism are made against the film without addressing the extremely positive portrayals of many Jewish characters (the Virgin Mary's portrayal is stunning, along with Simon helping Christ, hell, even Caiaphas crying in repentance at the films denouement)

      I had no doubt. 🙂
I’m especially fascinated by this quote:
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
      ‭‭John‬ ‭3:14-15‬
He’s referring to the historical accounts of the wilderness period recorded in
      Numbers 21:4-9.
By itself, that wilderness story seems odd; until the discussion with Nicodemus.
      But I digress.
      I enjoyed your review!

Jewish people are chosen by GOD because the Messiah was prophesied to be descendant from their race. That is why they are the chosen of GOD. But if a Jewish person rejects their own Messiah who is of their own blood/kind, then GOD allowed Him to become Messiah to all races/persons. And Jewish persons were elevated but now are like other races in GOD's sight. So Jewish persons are now like other races no better or no worse. No one should discriminate against Jewish persons but they should not be idolized either. Only idolize Jesus Christ Messiah and Lord of all.

to me, its the most disgusting movie I have ever seen in my life. Not only for the antisemitic touch. But also: where is the point in watching a movie where everything is about a men beeing tortured and killed? You have to be or sadistic or a religious religious person to like stuff like that... I still would like someone to explain me why Jesus's death, from the standpoint of Cristianity, is always pictured as a necessary step to save humanity? Save humanity from what? Have wars, slavery, razism, injustice stop since then? How many people have been killed, throughout humanity, in the name of Cristinianity? Who has been saved after all, and from what..?

From the Christian stand point your never going to get it. But from a Jewish standpoint makes a little more sense.

If I remember correctly, God created Israel as a nation that would be set apart to bring the rest of the nations as a union with one God. But Israel rebelled and broke the laws that God instated. They were under a covenant oath that had severe consequences of death if they were to break it. The Hebrews and Jews would have been wiped out from the face of the earth and the knowledge of God would have disappeared. The only way they could remove that death penalty is if someone took their place and suffered through all the punishments when breaking a covenant from back then. That’s when according to the Bible, God offered his own sacrifice that being Jesus so they could be forgiven and restored back. It has to do with how it was back then with culture, practices and interpretations that to this date they would be considered to ancient or too brutal for today’s standards.

Actually, to clear up some things. 1. Simon from Cyrene, according to early church fathers, was, in fact, a jew. In the area of Cyrene, which is north Africa, jews lived back then. So it's obvious, that he came for the great Pascha feast, as a believing jew. It's not excluded that he was a jew, just because he was from there, not at all. 2. Mt. 27:25 was in fact a curse, everything else is just nonsensical speculation. I mean come on, how do do you come to the conclusion that Caiphas saw it as a blessing, when in fact we see, that the jews cursed themselves with the killing of their own Messiah? Look what happened to them in 70 A.D., when the Romans whacked the city and over a million jews died, Jewish women even eating their own children because of the famine. Look what happened to them since then, and how the jews suffered. Besides, all the church fathers and theologians see it as a curse, even if we could discuss in how far every single jew is involved, that's another question, but a curse it definitely is. 3. The catholic church didn't put a "Roman and Greek spin" on the scriptures, they interpreted it the right way, since Christ was truly the Messiah, no other interpretation could be right and we see, that the jews, since thousands of years, wait for a Messiah which doesn't come, because 2.000 years ago they crucified Him. When Christ was the Son of God, then His and HIS teachings alone are truth, so there is no valid bond between God and the jews anymore, until they recognize Him as their Messiah.
