Joey always knew he was in a rock'n'roll band. Johnny was under the impression he was working in a concrete factory. Anyway, when this happened RHCP were still in the early part of their journey, on the upslope, when a band is an art project and it's about fun. The Ramones were long since out of that phase when this happened. The post peak, "it's just a business" phase, when a band really isn't creating anything new and interesting any more and just sort of performing to pay the bills and remind everyone they still exist. It's where most bands end up eventually.

'We weren't trying to be ,uhh ,look at me'..as describes getting naked and jumping into a spotlight on a stage, during the most popular song they Ever did. How could anyone get that idea? Thats rhcp in nutshell.
Never met the guy but most stories I have heard about Johnny was he wasn't really cool or nice. Joey on the other hand, all I hear are cool stories and the same with Dee Dee and the drummers.
Johnny was a straight up a-hole and disliked by alot of people. A legend for sure but this is a guy who Joey hated so much. Joey was very shy and Johnny stole his girlfriend. The KKK Took My Baby Away is about Johnny. He is the KKK. Johnny also refused to visit Joey on his deathbed and when inducted into the HOF he thanked George W Bush and not Johnny. Johnny however became close friends with John Frusciante as did his widow. They still hang out.
That sort of thing has happened to me on stage as a guitar player in a band and at the time I was mad but when I went back at watched the video that they filmed that night I had to laugh wasn't that bad.
I’ve been a fan of both of these bands for a long time and every bit of this sounds like the members of RHCP being themselves, Johnny being Johnny & Joey being Joey. It’s also not a surprise that Dee Dee didn’t say anything because he may not have even noticed the three extra people on stage and no one ever asked any of the Ramones drummers his opinion on anything. So this all pretty much adds up to me as exactly what I would’ve expected to happen in that given situation.
Johnny was always different from the punk image, because he was blue collar conservative. I wonder if the pre-show ritual was for Joey to cop3 with his obsessive compulsive issues.
From the audience it's fun and enjoyable most of the time when something unexpected happens on stage, even if it's just the opening band coming back for a few seconds and dancing naked. I think it was kind of cool
I'm from Finland and my mom was at this concert in the Provinssirock festival. She remembers the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ramones' concerts and of course the moment how Red Hot Chili Peppers "ruined" the Ramones concert. She also have met Joey Ramone after the show.
I always thought Rock n Roll was all about self expression, free will, and fighting the system, but nooooo, thanks to Johnny, it's all about the money and institutionalizing their brand...
…… my old band used to do the same thing. If given an opportunity before a gig, We’d run off into the washroom or around back of the venue to quickly play through our songs. We didn’t do the full songs, but we’d do intro verse chorus solo and outro quickly for each song. Its not unheard of.
When I do a song live performance I’ve played it three times earlier that day. They hit well then playing them is golden high quality woodwork. Also it’s how the All Blacks play rugby, they reherse and so when they’re on the field they play so good.
So much hate in the comments.. I’m pretty sure he got the memo, or he wouldn't have shared the story in the way he did. We’ve all done stupid shit at one point or another. Or maybe it’s just me..
I’m a huge fan of Ramones and Chili Peppers but, I think it’s telling when Joey liked it and Johnny didn’t. On a side note, Alice In Chains did the same thing to Van Halen.
Chains got boo'd off the stage in Miami, opening for VH. They sounded like crap, and acted like real douchebags. The crowd was there for VH, and because they played and sounded bad, they didn't win anyone over. In the end got pissed, threw a guitar down, gave the crowd the finger, and stormed off. All because they sounded like shit and the crowd wasn't digging it.
We don't need to talk a opinion, this just happened. In the punk scene so many bands would liked it, and some bands didn't. In a day ok, other day bad. C'mon..
It IS bizarre. That's why nobody except The Ramones ever did that. For 99.99% of musicians it's unthinkable, because for bands who aren't run by a sociopathic fascistic drill sergeant wannabe, there's a strict rule: If you have to rehearse your set or practise your guitar solos in the dressing room before the show, you've screwed up royally. You should be able to play your stuff in your sleep at that point. That's what rehearsals before a tour are for. If you want to try new stuff in the middle of a tour, you rehearse it at the soundchecks, not directly before the gig. You usually don't play anything you're going to play on stage while your're warming up. Because if you screw it up during the warm-up, it takes your confidence and security away for the moment it really counts, in front of a paying audience.
@@henrygvidonas9573 Nobody does it because firstly they don't have the endurance to do it and secondly because of a kind of secrecy and narcissism. They want to impress with their "imaginative" set on stage without others knowing what songs it is. Also, the Ramones were warming up not rehearsing.
If they did it during Cretin Hop I think it is kind of funny. Very early Chili Pepper like of them, definitely makes the show memorable, and yeah they were on stage and off, I feel it is perfect punk rock history.
Lessons learned for Anthony. Johnny doesn't dig it. Joey kinda did. And lastly, and most importantly. It must have been a very cold night, because Anthony mentions shrinkage a lot. 😂
That was actually pretty cool. But I imagine Johnny's stage was a sacred place. And he was such as asshole. Its a shame because he was so awesome. But he was no Joey or Dee Dee or Mark. Ask Jack when he is gonna make Stepbrothers 2!
@@user-bl6ne3hc6n Williams went half-naked, not naked, and of course the Plasmatics were known for their on-stage debauchery. This is the exception and not the rule. After all, the Plasmatics were not a classic punk rock band but a mutation of punk rock. Also, a lot of them took drugs, but that's not typical of punk rock. Williams did other things in her public life that can't even be described as punk rock. It's not punk rock to be a bit of a porn star. Shoplifting and passing counterfeit money as well. And it's generally not punk rock to do what everyone else is doing, especially if they're a little deranged. In the early 70s there was no punk rock
By the way The Ladybirds, probably the first naked band on stage (females) in 1966, were not punk rock. Public nudity, in general, is hippie not punk rock.
I mean, you must’ve been a little aware of the dynamic of the band and their personalities. Johnny didn’t strike me as a guy that had friendly conversations with anybody ever. But you know anything that pisses off Johnny would make Joey tickled pink. Fire and Water those two.
I heard a story once that Johnny and his wife were walking down the sidewalk carrying grocery bags. Johnny saw a fan in a ramones shirt and ditched all the groceries on the sidewalk because he was too embarrassed to be seen doing such a menial task.
The book that Marky Ramone wrote speaks on how much Johnny was an A-Hole! Even when Joey was dying in the hospital, Johnny refused to visit him... Joey was always the fun and easy going one!

Yeah I saw the Ramones a lot back when they started.. unfortunately after the first 2 or 3 LP's that shook the world they sorta became irrelevant except for die hard fans
The Chili Peppers and Metallica haven't reached this point even remotely...they being more creative than ever
The RHCP have never been an "art project."😆
@@petarticinovic2710 Of course they have. All bands/ musician are artists. Music is art, each note is a colour and you're essentially painting a picture with sound. 🤷♂
@@petarticinovic2710 And ya can't tell me Kiedis isn't wearing an art teachers top in this short. 🤷♂😂 ruclips.net/user/shortsRxBLqkqDTEQ?si=8DERsICRydzWYhn-
Yeah, you don't screw with 30 minutes of rock perfection
"For some reason Hillel didn't want to be a part of this shenanigan"
The Last Days of Hillel 😢
Anthony is the greatest singer on earth, the best looking person on earth and a lyrical genius. Just ask him, he will tell you it is so.
'We weren't trying to be ,uhh ,look at me'..as describes getting naked and jumping into a spotlight on a stage, during the most popular song they Ever did. How could anyone get that idea? Thats rhcp in nutshell.
Testament to Hillel's cool, refined character. He was the only one who refused to participate.
Never met the guy but most stories I have heard about Johnny was he wasn't really cool or nice. Joey on the other hand, all I hear are cool stories and the same with Dee Dee and the drummers.
The KKK Took My Baby Away is about Johnny.
...and then I went and did a bunch of coke and was about to get kicked out of the band. but love. and forgiveness. and then more coke.
Anthony chooses his words very carefully
Proving Johnny Ramone wasn't really punk rock but the Peppers were
That’s just blasphemy
Peppers were narcissistic hippies. Period!
It was a joke
Well... There are bit better ways to "pay respect"
Johnny always did come off as uptight. But its that behavior that got the band going.
People like you really suck
He was all about money and business Joey and Dee Dee were around for the fun part (performing)
Joey ♥️♥️♥️
This is a wild story!
❤❤❤LONG LIVE THE RAMONES!!!❤❤❤
Exposes one’s asshole on stage ”danced with love in our hearts across the stage” 😂
That's Joey and Johnny all over.
Johnny Ramone was/is/& will always be remembered as a super no nonsense dude... kinda the opposite of RHCP
Chilis are still with us, kinda the opposite of Johnny
That sort of thing has happened to me on stage as a guitar player in a band and at the time I was mad but when I went back at watched the video that they filmed that night I had to laugh wasn't that bad.
Johnny was a borderline militant very tough person to get close too
I’ve been a fan of both of these bands for a long time and every bit of this sounds like the members of RHCP being themselves, Johnny being Johnny & Joey being Joey.
It’s also not a surprise that Dee Dee didn’t say anything because he may not have even noticed the three extra people on stage and no one ever asked any of the Ramones drummers his opinion on anything.
So this all pretty much adds up to me as exactly what I would’ve expected to happen in that given situation.
Ahhh Joey, you are missed my friend.
Ramones increíble influencia para los rhcp realmente unos tipos geniales escuchar esto es increíble ...joey era muy especial❤❤❤
We, The Drumbones, opened up for them (Chili Peps) in late November of 1985 here in Cincinnati at a place called Bogart's.
Yksi suosikki laulajiani ikinä, vaikutti sympaattiselta tyypiltä, mahdoton vihata. Respect.
@@AnliaTheGothicGirl Kuulostaa 100% Joey Ramonelta! Huoh... liian aito tähän maailmaan. Pitää taas alkaa käydä läpi hänen vanhoja haastatteluja.
"Bizarre finnish compound" I'm guessing Sorsanpesä hotel since they were at provinssirock :D
I always thought Rock n Roll was all about self expression, free will, and fighting the system, but nooooo, thanks to Johnny, it's all about the money and institutionalizing their brand...
…… my old band used to do the same thing.
If given an opportunity before a gig,
We’d run off into the washroom or around back of the venue to quickly play through our songs.
I ❤ the Ramones and RHCP.
I get that RHCP were wrong for that, but everything I’ve heard about Johnny has made me like him less.
So much hate in the comments.. I’m pretty sure he got the memo, or he wouldn't have shared the story in the way he did. We’ve all done stupid shit at one point or another. Or maybe it’s just me..
Stop throwing the word hate around over other people's opinions. It's extremely weak.
@@KISEwun Don't you know, there is no valid entirely warranted criticism, only hAtErZZ
Right. We've all done stupid shit before. And usually reaped the consequences.
"what they want I don't know they're all revved up and ready to go"
Classic Joey vs Johnny moment 🤣🤣🤣
When I did this I got arrested.
Hahahaha 😂😂😂
We don't need to talk a opinion, this just happened. In the punk scene so many bands would liked it, and some bands didn't. In a day ok, other day bad. C'mon..
👍
He thinks rehearsing before the show is bizarre?
Considering RHCP has a punk background, yes, bizarre.
They did it to warm up,with the drummer playing on boxes or guitar cases,it went way back, one of dee Dee's goofy ideas 😊
I'm sure the Finn's loved it even if the R's didn't.
Joey was always the coolest
I think Johnny was the eldest and most conservative of the group.
If they did it during Cretin Hop I think it is kind of funny. Very early Chili Pepper like of them, definitely makes the show memorable, and yeah they were on stage and off, I feel it is perfect punk rock history.
Johnny was said by others in the band to be like a drill sergeant
One of the guys from Chumbawamba did that to Smashing Pumpkin on German tv because Billy Corgan was acting like a total primadonna before the set.
Does anyone else think that was a bit cheeky considering what they have done in the past 😜
what happens if you knock a member of Chumbawamba down? he will get up again and have ciders and lagers
@@ackerjawaka1966 this was before Tubthumper. Chumbawamba were popular in Germany since the late 80's.
Lessons learned for Anthony. Johnny doesn't dig it. Joey kinda did. And lastly, and most importantly. It must have been a very cold night, because Anthony mentions shrinkage a lot. 😂
Joey was sweating bad he was steaming
I'll bet Joey thought it was cool just cause it pissed off Johnny.
Yeah he loved to annoy Johnny i remember when Joey called Johnny a "facist creep" at Howard Stern in 1999
That felt fully authentic. Respect.
RHCP PDF FILE😂😂😂
One or all of them???
Johnny probably kicked their asses. He was known to get physical if someone messed up their show, even with his own band.
Johnny used to hit his first or second wife, can't remember. The band wouldn't have gone anywhere without him but he was a despicable human being.
That was actually pretty cool. But I imagine Johnny's stage was a sacred place. And he was such as asshole. Its a shame because he was so awesome. But he was no Joey or Dee Dee or Mark. Ask Jack when he is gonna make Stepbrothers 2!
"I was getting smaller and smaller and smaller" with his fingers ... I thought he was talking about his ... Well... THING 😂
Johnny was a very no bullshit kind of a guy
Being naked is so punk rock,
Since when?
@nkscou9008 since the early 70s, and of course the 80s Wendy O Williams,
@@user-bl6ne3hc6n Williams went half-naked, not naked, and of course the Plasmatics were known for their on-stage debauchery.
@nkscou9008 what's the difference, my gosh, thank you for the history lesson, ,
Nice story , and very well explain . Livin and learnin
Ramones would let people go on stage w them when they did Pinhead. I saw it firsthand, they let rancid n other friends run around n pogo n all that.
I mean, you must’ve been a little aware of the dynamic of the band and their personalities. Johnny didn’t strike me as a guy that had friendly conversations with anybody ever. But you know anything that pisses off Johnny would make Joey tickled pink. Fire and Water those two.
I saw the Ramones in 92. Red Hots.....never. I got no regrets.
Dudo que Joey pudo verlos a un metro y medio
I've been a fan of the Ramones since their debut came out when I was 15. Johnny has always had a reputation of being an ass
Joey was always the fun and easy going one!
i don't think rhcp ruined the show, this is the worst ramones concert i have ever seen (and i love them)
