  • Haiti's government has declared a state of emergency as violence escalates. Armed gangs demanding the prime minister's resignation have attacked two prisons, allowing thousands of inmates to escape, and leaving dozens dead and wounded.
    Violence has reached unprecedented levels since the assassination of president Jovenel Moise at his home in 2021. It's estimated that gangs now control as much as 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince. Prime minister Ariel Henry travelled out of the country last week to try and drum up support for a multinational peace mission to bring the gang violence under control.
    For more on this we talk to Robert Fatton Jr. He is the Julia A. Cooper Professor of Government & Foreign Affairs, in the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia. His many publications include: "Haiti’s Predatory Republic: The Unending Transition to Democracy" and "Haiti: Trapped in the Outer Periphery".

    My cousin, his wife and three kids moved to America after the Haitian election I believe around 2015-2016. They were on the losing side so they ran for their lives. Multiple times they were shot at during the campaign, they had to drive around in bullet proof cars. But when I met the kids they were intelligent and highly aware for their age. The two older boys were fluent in English, French, and creole. The little girl who was three years old at the time communicated like she was ten. All of them had amazing communication skills in fact, it felt like I was speaking to adults in kids bodies. Fast forward to 2024, the older son got influenced by American gangster rap and is in and out of jail, and the girl has been completely Americanized. Didn’t know a lick of Creole last time I talked to her and she talks like a white suburban girl😢. It’s crazy how their parents are totally ok with them forgetting where they came from. Even though I was born in America, I still speak Creole and French whenever I talk to my parents, it’s not the best but it’s still a part of me. I grew up in a Haitian community where we all lived in the same neighborhood and went to the same churches and schools. I don’t want to lose that part of me. I don’t know what to do to help Haiti but whatever is about to happen, I hope Haiti can make it through like we did during the revolution. I believe unity is going to be the deciding factor. L'Union Fait La Force. travay ann ekip ✊🏿🇭🇹

      @RJ-ww7yy 11 месяцев назад +7

      I don't know that much about Myanmar to be honest. I just googled it and from what I can tell, it's very different.
      In Haiti there aren't multiple organized factions fighting each other. There are several gangs in Haiti but they aren't really fighting each other. Some of the gangs are murdering "civilians". I put civilians in quotes because the gangs are really just civilians who have no other opportunities so they joined these mostly unorganized gangs.
      The most "organized" faction that the gangs are against is the Haitian police. But as said in the video, the police are very weak so idk if you can consider anything they do fighting back.
      So yeah long story short is that any gang in Haiti has a lot of power because the police is weak and there is no national military. The gangs aren't really fighting each other
