Caribbean leaders are holding an emergency meeting in Jamaica today to discuss the crisis in Haiti, where armed groups are calling for the resignation of unelected Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Haiti is under a state of emergency, with tens of thousands displaced amid the fighting, and United Nations officials warn the country's health system is nearing collapse. Ariel Henry was appointed prime minister after the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, but he is currently stranded outside the country after a trip to Kenya, where he was seeking a U.N.-backed security force to help him maintain power. For more, we speak with Haitian American scholar Jemima Pierre, who says the unrest in Haiti today can be traced to decisions made two decades ago by the United States and other outside powers. "The root of this crisis is not last week, it's not this week, it's not even Ariel Henry. But we have to go back to 2004 with the coup-d'état," says Pierre. She adds that because successive security plans have been sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council, "the whole world is participating in the occupation of Haiti unwittingly."

Haiti is an imperialist playground in large part because France still holds grudges over the fact that Haiti gave them their first defeat during the slave trade era. This defeat of their most prided general Napoleon Bonaparte marked the beginning of a succession of defeats they would suffer as a result of losing a major part of their economic power (Haiti). They made Haiti pay them everything Haiti produced in order for them to recognize Haitian independence, which started the nation on an economic back foot, but that didn’t prove to be enough. This is purely my belief, but France (and by de facto, the U.S.) set out to make an example of Haiti to deter other nations from wanting to do the same, but it was too late. At this point it’s just grudge. The weapons in the hands of Haitian gangs are not ones they produced or captured; they are funded and provided on purpose TO further devolve the country into chaos and civil unrest. To prove that they cannot self-govern, and justify future occupation. Future occupation gives imperialists control of any future for the (so-called) independent nation, and free range to exploit its resources unchallenged.

if it was real imperialism this would not happen stop with the nonsense. This is government/police not able to protect it's citizens. When the gangs are eating , graping and killing women and kids it's not about fighting imperialism they are doing this to they own people. Imperialism by definition is not singular to one country, many countries expand and use military to take control of area's. But are they instilling a democratic government or a dictatorship? Depending on what resources are here if USA and united nations pulls out here other countries will come here to establish control. For the most part here the government/police have failed it's citizens' here when you have gangs brutalizing citizens it's not a revolution or fight against imperialism these are gangs are attacking haitians. They are not attacking the us embassy nor have they been able to overcome it.

Dear Jemima, how old were you when Aristide left in 2004? Genuine question.
I am 43, I was 6 years old when the population shook the country to get rid of Jean Claude Duvalier and I remember a lot of it to this day. Ever since this event, it was coup d’etat after coup d’etat roughly from 1986 to 1991 when Aristide was democratically elected. The Aristide who left after his 1st coup d’etat is not the one who returned with Bill Clinton. It is disingenuous of you to tell the world that the armed gangs are controlled by the elites and bourgeoisie when you must know that it was Aristide who started it. Haiti has been in free fall ever since his return to power, he had his goons, his “chimeres lavalas” to silence the opposition and silence the youth in universities, he had his “ rat pa kaka” in every street corners and neighborhoods terrorizing the population. I don’t think you ever had to reply some stupid insane slogan to be granted passage to your street. Do not paint Aristide like he was some saint, and please stop blaming the world for our shortcomings. Politics are dirty for sure, but the level of corruption in Haiti is on Haitians! Not Americans, Canadians, Brazilians etc…We need to take responsibility for Once. I applaud your research, you need to go further back to give you a full picture.

What did professor Pierre say that painted Aristide as a saint? What’s puzzles me most is how you applaud Jemima’s research and at the same time disagree with her conclusions that outside powers are majorly responsible for the conditions of Haiti today, that you appear to have lived through?

I wish I could say more about the situation but I don't know enough to speak on it but I agree with the person who commented on the common denominator. The same thing is happening worldwide just on a different scale. It's so hard to find a fair leader who is not greedy or is it that internal and external pressure makes for no solution. I always wanted to visit Haiti but I've only seen video of the nation. If my country can spend millions and billions of dollars on war and foreign policies why can't we come up with an agreement to invest in the Haitian people and economy. I can't say whether it's Haitian policies or our policies that are not lining up. I would just love to see peace and harmony everywhere but then I think if there's no war now there will be a bigger one later. Now I'm beginning to understand why our days are numbered.
