I am not an advocate for Coca Cola, but they did make a fairly nice ad that used this song back in the early 90's. But what a great song.. Just like The Go-Betweens ''Cattle And Cane'', this tune is based on a poem written by the singer about a real life experience.

I've had many awesome summers cracking tinnies with me mates, just talking shit and listening to songs like this and then suddenly our hot nights turn into heavy rain and lightning... and all we can do is laugh and say ''no wonder the surf was so good today''..
Never really came out with obvious stuff like ''this is Australia'', but then again I'm not a pom .. ahem.. I mean, British person that is experiencing extreme Aussie heat for the first time.. Happy Australia Day! Bye bye.....

Happy Australia Day! Iconic song that was almost spoilt for me by over playing on the radio - but that just means it is popular I guess. 😊. The original film clip was great as well.
Their name “GANGgajang” is evidently the sound of strumming an acoustic guitar.

Mark Cal is from my city of Brisbane. This song sends shivers down my spin because I relate to every word sung. He describes the Australia that I experienced as a child, where you couldn't sleep at night because it was so damn hot. I was born in Australia, but I can really put myself into the shoes of somebody from England that had experienced all this for the first time. It had to have been a culture shock.

A bit late of me to say Happy Aussie Day, so I'll just comment on the band. They were like Goanna in the sense that their songs were a little too serious and earnest for an 80's teenager to really like. ''Sounds Of Then'' and ''Gimme Some Loving'' (not a cover) are the only two that stand out in my mind, and while Cal's previous group, Riptides, were okay for some nascent Brisbane band, can't say they have anything more to offer than 'Hearts And Flowers'. So, if I was to suggest anything by these guys, just so for ''Gimme Some Loving'' and The Riptides ''Hearts & Flowers''.

It is basically illrgal for members of the public to buy fireworks in Australia. Only highly organised events that employ experienced and licenced pyrotechnic professionals can obtain the permits legally required to set off any firework display. There are probably many reasons for this but one of the main ones being that it is now summer in Australia, the height of the bushfire system and the danger of bushfires starting in most areas of Australia is so high that the fire danger signs with the pointer indicating on a dail the level of fire danger starts at high and has about four or five levels above that ending at very extremely high where cars with internal combustion engines are not allowed off the tarred roads in the bush as stray sparks from the car's exhaust could start a raging bushfire.
There used to be sugar plantations in many areas all down the coast areas of Queensland and even into Northern NSW. But the international politics of sugar pricing made the selling price of sugarcane fluctuate widely from season to season for Australian producers when the Australian government removed most import controls and duties on imported sugar. Without a stable domestic market most former growers especially South of about Bundeburg and even further North left the industry for other more stable primary production like other crops or even raising cattle. Mostly it was the local sugar mills that closed first which made growing sugar cane uneconomical because of the transport costs of harvested sugar cane to more distant mills.

This song is so QLD. Not that i have sat and watched lightning cracking over canefields... But living in Brisbane, i definitely know the humidity!! Fireworks were banned in the 80's, only authorised, licenced people are allowed to have them (though they seem to be some going off around here monthly!!)

    • @shaundgb7367
      @shaundgb7367 9 месяцев назад +2

Yeah, always think this song is a bit odd as an Aussie. Now I heard the background of this song is about some British person moving to Bundaberg it makes more sense when hear the words, as I do not relate much of it to where I live. But up in Queensland it would be more relevant with humidity and canefields. I not been much further north than Bundaberg on the east coast, because honestly, the crazy weather up that way heavy rainfall and cyclones scare the beejezus out of me. I mean, even in recent days it sounds like that have cyclone warnings up that way. It really a song about the tropical part of Australia and makes sense when listen to the words. I never really know much about this band and sounds weird to me if members of The Angels were in it. But if they were, well, learned something new today.
On fireworks, I never really associate them with this public holiday so cannot remember if ever had them it past or not. I heard fireworks on new years eve, locally so some people have some in backyard, which probably not legal but they did not last long.
Australia Day for me is usually about watching the cricket, which I am about to do after this video. It has always been just another summer public holiday to me. Nothing more or nothing less so never really celebrate this day like I would Christmas Day or New Year's Eve. It just a fan day off work and hopefully it sunny and the cricket on. It actually only 21 degrees C right now. Not much of a warm summer day. But there is some sun rays outside with the cloudy sky. Hopefully up north in Queensland the weather and cyclones stay out at sea.

When I first came to Australia in 1976, the place seemed restless and tense, like there was a need for a change.. It had been about year since the firing of the country's prime minister Gough Whitlam and a couple of years after the ending of the Vietnam war. There was a feeling that a lot of young people were sick of something, but it wasn't clear exactly what that something was.
10 years later, Australia was a very confident and optimistic country and a lot of youngins were ready to take on the world. I know it sounds funny, but even that INXS music-video for ''Don't Change'' had that ''we can do it'' spirit that seemed prevalent in 1980's Australia. In the middle of this new optimstic Australia and the Paul Hogan/Land Down Under Australia was this detached Australia where people like GANGgajang, Paul Kelly, Midnight Oil and Goanna were reporting on the reality of things. As an Englishman that had been in hot places like what's described in ''Sounds Of Then'', I can relate to this song.
Another part of me can also relate to Warumpi Band's ''My Island Home'', seeing as I am from another place, but have my own family here.
    Happy Australia Day everybody.

    Firstly Happy Australia Day 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
It is illegal to buy fireworks in Australia, but we are going to our nearest city tonight (which is around 170 km south of Perth) to watch them. Not as elaborate as Sydney NSW, but still fun to watch. Ours will be the traditional fireworks, but I have heard that Perth WA is going to have a light show instead of fireworks. Perhaps some viewers from Perth could confirm….
We have cane fields in Queensland. I am not sure if you’ve seen any Jimmy Barnes official videos but you would see the fire in the cane fields in the clip for Working Class Man.
BBQs are big here. Our very small country town puts on a breakfast every Australia Day with entertainment for just a gold coin donation. The BBQs are used to cook bacon, eggs, sausages, onion and tomatoes. They toast bread and have a lot of very yummy seasonal fruit (and since it’s summer there was a lot to choose from). On top you can help yourself to orange juice or tea or coffee.

They were fine for the Punk and Post-Punk thing, but were't destined to be chartbusters. Then he emerged from the ashes of The Riptides with this ripper. Coca-Cola exploited the song by using it on one of their ads in the late 80's, which seemed to work in making more people aware of the song. Whatever it takes to bring the music to the people I guess.

About the dancing. A lot of male rockers weren't very good dancers, and I can confirm that Michael Hutchence couldn't dance during the early days of INXS. Take it from a Countdown kid that watched Michael Hutchence perform in the ''Countdown studio''. He just did these straight legged jumps and then pop his chest out as he mimed the next line. He got better once INXS made money.
Kylie was a female pop singer. A lot of Aussie girls would take up dancing at some stage or another and those of us influenced by Countdown would take dancing seriously and try to enter the show's competitions.
Kylie Minogue and Kate Ceberano were good dancers, but had like the rest of us more ambitious Countdown kids, got their training from Tania Lacy and other pro's. A lot of males had an aversion towards dancing and thought it was a ''girls'' thing, which meant girls like me would enter the Countdown dance competition, and compete with either other girls or guys that had specific styles (breakdancing, locking, etc)... I competed with Gillian and Hayley in 1984 and they kicked my arse.

Happy Australia day. Middle of summer, so fireworks is not a good idea. With regard to Australia's climate. We are virtually the same size of the mainland US. Darwin (most northern capital) is about the same latitude as Florida. Hobart (most southern capital) is about the same latitude as Michigan i.e. Grand Rapids and Flint

Thank you very much! Great tune. Other Ganggajang to check out are as follows:
GANGgajang - Gimme Some Loving nzoz1984
I just can't name any other GGJ songs that interest me as much as those two. GGJ's singer, Mark Callaghan, had played in a (punk) band called Riptides before GANGGAJANG. Check out the following below:
The Riptides - Hearts And Flowers nzoz1982
    The Riptides - 77 Sunset Strip nzoz1979
Hearts & Flowers is a lost classic in my opinion.

@@kaitlynbatt_ well I’ve been entertained this morning Kaitlyn, I enjoyed the GANGgajang track AND the recommendation to check out the earlier Riptides tracks which I thoroughly enjoyed too . The 2nd one ,77 Sunset strip , I had the odd and laughable feeling that the lead singer / bass player looked so like the UK writer/comedian/actor Stephen Merchant that I found it distracting . But the term that I just invented of “Surfing Undertones “ is a huge compliment from me as I admire Surfing and adore The Undertones , what’s not to like 🤷‍♂️ ?
