  • What Happens When a CHICK is HATCHING | Step by Step How Chicken Eggs Hatch
Step by step I will explain what is happening when a chicken is hatching from it's egg. Hatching eggs is SO much fun, and totally addicting. Don't say I didn't warn you. 😊
    ABOUT US
We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?

I have today just had 4 silkie chicks hatch. This is my first attempt. One wasn’t fertilised and one an early death out if six. I am very pleased with them . Fingers crossed for when they go to the brooder tomorrow

That is a great hatching rate! Good job! Just a suggestion. I keep them in the incubator for at least 48 hours. They can survive for 36, but I give them some leeway to learn the water and food. I find that they are less fragile if you wait two days. :)

@@birchmoonfarm101 thanks for that I was worried when to do it when you say 48 hrs to learn water and food, you don't mean you put water and food in the incubator? Or in the incubator for 48hrs then to the brooder for food and water ? This is very scary

At 48 hours put in the brooder with water and food. Do you know to dip their beaks in the water? If not, dip their beaks in the water when you place them into the brooder so that they know what it is. They seem to instinctually know the food. You've got this!

@@birchmoonfarm101 thanks I did know about dipping beaks. I have a brinsea brooder not a heat lamp

@@birchmoonfarm101 the last one hatched at 11 am this morning, the other three overnight, I am worried that I don’t know when the 48 hrs are up for them? Sorry for so many questions
