Craig was the best and most unique late night talk show host in America, and hell, the entire world, at least in recent decades. CBS was probably glad to let him go after only a decade - this man annoyed them hard in many ways while entertaining us in brilliant ways. His jokes pushed the boundaries and annoyed CBS executives countless times. Some of the segments got shut down, like the hand-puppet jokes. He did not like sticking to scripts when interviewing guests - he infamously tore those cards every single time. He had a small feud with Tom Cruise over a joke and that's why Tom never appeared on the show. He interviewed guests and actors who were interesting but not super-famous.Though it wasn't officially confirmed, I'd like to believe CBS "punished" him through the years by operating the show on a very low budget. No in-house band, no high quality graphics for the segments, almost no props (think of all the various props Fallon used in his show) but just two men dressed up as a horse, a gay robot skeleton as a sidekick (sometimes it broke down during the show), the brief dancers, an old phone and a harmonica, among others I may have left out. In comparison, his successor James Corden, who is arguably generic and "safe" has a huge amount of resources at his disposal. Think of the band, "Carpool Karaoke", the mini-game segments which include expensive disgusting food, a fruit cannon setup, etc. Of course, most of James Corden's guests are A-listers. Sure, you may say CBS did the right thing as the show with James Corden is now more famous than ever before and more profitable. However, the charm and wit the previous edition had is now gone, and will probably be undiscovered to younger/newer viewers of American late night shows.

You spoke what was on my mind perfectly. I watched Craig every night I could when he was on. I loved everything about the show. I gave the new show a chance, but it just felt "safe" like you said. It was lame. It was generic. Without Reggie, I would have stopped watching even sooner. I don't think we will ever get another person like Craig on late night, which is a shame.

@@Iukini - you're right; late night TV is a desert. When the top guys were Jay Leno and Letterman, even the sideshows(Tom Snyder, Craig Ferguson, Arsinio, and Coco's dazzling first show) were great. You had smart guys who were good talkers, who got breathtaking little gems in conversation with guests just by being good at interviews and drawing out the guests and making them comfortable. It disturbs me that Fallon used to be that way.
Anyway, the Money-Go-Round has won. I haven't owned a TV for over a decade, and I don't even especially miss it. I get to bed earlier, and I try to not treat normal people to my sense of humor, which was fine-tuned by a couple of decades of late-night type snark and then forced to be antipathetic by years of the bile resulting from political correctness and Murdock's asshole minions. I have as much fun as I can get away with, so it works out. Fortune passes everywhere.

Craig was so quick witted and fun to watch. I know he didn't always hit all the points he needed to in interviews, but that's what I loved about him. He didn't care about making sure he checked off every box. Instead he followed his guests lead, and created dialogue that flourished naturally from what was spoken last. He tried to always agree with his guest for the sake of humor even though it made him the butt of so many jokes. Conan and Craig will always be my Johnny Carsons.
