I bought one new in late 2014. It has 218,000 miles, runs like a top, the engine has never been opened up, and it is still on its original clutch. One of the best cars I have ever owned.
As a poor American, I appreciate you reviewing an affordable new car! We have plenty of huge gas guzzling expensive SUVs and trucks for sale but very few small fuel sipping affordable new cars. Truly a shame!
It’s really a shame but if you go anywhere in the world, you’ll find more basic cars, more compact cars, better luxury cars, better packages, better colors and manufactured stronger than what the US market receives. I don’t understand why!!!
Let’s not forget the car reviewers speaking on the consumer behalf and constantly demanding bigger ridiculous rims, softer dashboards like it men to sleep on, bigger infotainment screen ( maybe a TV size someday)…pushing the manufacturers to add more and more “luxury” until no more basic cars to be found for the middle class citizens. This reminds me of the vaccum cleaners 😅once a bag less vacuum cleaner was made, a pandemic of bagless vacuum spread like it’s truly a better choice than simple and very effective bagged vacuum cleaner. Companies do not give a shit about making good products, it’s all about the money and what the unknowledgeable consumer who follow the hype want.
A lot of ppl have jumped on the bandwagon, criticizing this guy for his perceived unfair review of this car. On the surface, I agree with some of the review, but remember, owners are defending this car for a reason. The comments about longevity are obviously wrong. These cars last a very long time (just change that CVT fluid...). Owners love this car because the car never pretends to be something its not. They knew what they were buying and they're okay with it. The bonus here is that, while Nissan and Kia wow the buyers with features and specs, the Mirage owner wins is the end with longevity. Sort of a--slow and steady wins the race--kind of thing.
Agreed, but they should really revise their pricing. I would love to get one of these myself, but once you get to the near-$20k this asks for, you do start asking why this over some other offerings.
I own a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, and I am enjoying it. I put 4,040 miles on it at the time of writing this. I've had the car 59 days. Overall, I find the engine has enough power. I do mostly freeway driving.
Nice car. I have a ‘23 Mirage Hatch & I love it. I’ve had it for 6 months now. Mitsubishi has the best warranty out there. Too bad the hatch will be discontinued here in the US in 2025.
Great car for the price, great fuel mileage and reliability for years to come, the power is adequate it is not as bad as this guy makes it to sound. It's a perfect daily commuter for someone mid-career that wants a reliable car until they retire.
When Mitusbishi introduced the sedan on the longer wheelbase, I think it was a mistake for them to not start using it for the hatchback to give more rear leg room and more cargo room with the seat folded down.
It is…for those who just don’t want to overpay other new car like new Corolla for $28k OTD or ridiculously expensive older said car. 40 MPG for less than $40 to fill it up. Who gonna hate it?
Not for $20k and up though. If I want to buy something like this, I'd rather import small vehicle from Japan, some state let you do that and it is definitely less than $15k for everything. Should I say over price?
Here in Dallas, new Corollas (gasoline and hybrid) are going for 5k over MSRP. So a base trim bare bones gasoline Corolla LE is 30k OTD. On the other hand, I can buy a brand new Mirage ES CVT for 20k OTD so it's a whole 10k cheaper. Mirage also has longer better warranty and is more fuel efficient than Corolla. Mirage wins.

You apologize too much for its perceived lack of power, but after putting 6K miles on my new 2023 HB Ive decoded what it needs to get onto any on ramp. The engine develops strongest torque at 4,000 rpm, so if you select the sport option pushing the gear selector to the right while getting not the on ramp, rev it to 4,000 rpm and hold it there, the engine will now pull the car onto the freeway much faster! As a salesman you should have figured out how that works and demonstrated it on your video!
You're working the engine exceptionally hard if you routinely push the RPM that high. For perspective, when I get on the highway in my little truck, the engine RPM doesn't exceed 2,500 and that's with the short, steep city onramps we have. If I push the engine to 3,000 rpm I'm leaving people in my dust.
Alright, enough ragging on the lackluster performance and acceleration of this 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder, 78-horsepower, 74-pound-feet of torque, 73-cubic inch, naturally aspirated engine. It is designed for fuel economy and reliability. For those desiring more power, that would require adding more cylinders or a turbocharger which would decrease fuel efficiency, add weight, and make the car more expensive. That would be contrary to the objectives of this car. It was never intended to be sporty. It was meant to be affordable, efficient, and reliable transportation for people on a budget. Those people are happy with this engine just as it is. If you have a need for speed, you’re not ready for a Mirage. Do all of the real Mirage owners a big favor and look elsewhere. That being said, when a little extra oomph is required, that is what the “Ds” or “Drive-sport” shift designation if for. Simply push the CVT shift lever to the right to engage “Ds” and the engine will hold its position longer allowing higher RPM’s and thus more torque to the front wheels. This will give a slight power boost when merging onto a freeway. Once up to speed, bump the shift lever back to the left, “D” mode, for better fuel efficiency and lower rpm’s. Learn to finesse the “L,” “Ds,” and “D” shift modes to get the best possible performance from this power train. It’s a small learning curve, but will add to your enjoyment of driving this car. It’s obvious that this RUclips reviewer is not an actual Mirage owner or he would know this aspect of the car. Geez! 🙄 The way this guy rags on the small trunk space, which is actually sufficient for a subcompact sedan, and his other nitpicking, makes this sound like a snobby review from a BMW or Tesla owner. If you don’t actually own and drive the car you’re attempting to review, then keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. Just stick to reviewing the vehicle you do actually own. Nissan Versa or Kia rio vastly superior options for same price. Or for a few k more you can get a corolla which is better than all 3 options.
I need to add, I do a lot of road trips in my car. My lower back gets sore after about an hour. I put a pillow in for some lower back support, it's just a pillow you would find in a bed. A rectangle shaped one. And it has done wonders. The car is now comfortable on huge trips, I've drove 12 hours in 1 day, and still felt good.
You judge econobox by luxury car standards? That's a smart way to go. Engine sound is much better than 4-cylinder competitors just drive it as the vehicle it is. If you constantly trying to imagine yourself in a car twice more powerful that is only your problem. Mirage is small comfortable car with great mileage. It's good for what it is. If you want something else - look for it in other pace.
I got a 2024 Mirage, and do mostly freeway driving, with some mountain driving, and LA city driving. Either way, over the life of the car, 54 tank fills, I've averaged 51.1 MPG. Though, on freeway trips, I regularly get 60-64 MPG. (: I set cruise to 55 MPH. I drive about 75 miles a day.
WOW THAT"S SUCH A GOOD DEAL. What state are you in? I'm in Florida and my closest dealer has it for $15k after discounts, but maybe I can bring it down more.
It's a tiny, slow, noisy car with poor safety, relatively speaking. Those are the realities of this car. Keep your expectations in check. It's not all bad though. It's the cheapest new car you can get. When driven with a light foot it sips fuel. It's incredibly easy to park. It's got surprisingly good comfort and ergonomics, and a soft squishy ride if you like that, which I do. Overall, it's a fantastic city car. The more extreme the conditions outside city driving, the worse the car feels. It feels very out of its element on the interstate. Speaking from 4yrs of experience owning a Mirage.
Upgrade your speakers, put components in the front. When you take the inside door panels off to do this, you can add sound material, which will make the car quieter. It's a great car over all.
I got the 2024 Mirage hatchback ES, yellow, and it's awesome! Is it possible you can review a fully loaded SE version of the Mirage? Most of the reviews are not of the SE, and it would be neat to see it.
I need to add, I've drove my Mirage 7,200 miles so far, and don't find power an issue at all. I do mostly freeway driving. Getting on the freeway, I turn the left blinker on, so they know I'm entering, and I just give it 2,500 RPM, and what ever speed that gets me to is what I do. Keep in mind, there are much slower vehicles, like semi-trucks, or U-Hauls. If they can merge with their 20-30 second 0-60's, so can this. (:
I wish they bring the Lancer back cause it the right size & power & looked good vs this little thing. I love mine & would buy another Lancer, it’s been a very dependable little car with all the power I’ve needed.
Those that struggle daily to provide to their family, or that have walk to work or in better cases, pay to ride the bus, are the most thankful people that would love to own at least one of these vehicles. 🚙 I saw a couple, walking off a Tesla, While taking their kid to school, he was a handsome fellow (am not gay) and she was a good looking girl, yet they walked like two complete strangers. Nicer cars buy social status, but not happiness.
Its not as slow as you think. Mitsubishi underrates their cars. This will do 0-60 in 9 seconds with the manual and it will keep up with the Nissan Versa and Kio Rio. The CVT on the other hand is a different story.. unfortunately they don't make the manual version anymore.
i hate that auto-makers and just throwing CVT in everything and calling that a all-purpose fix. they get worse MPGs than a traditionally transmission, which gets worse MPGs than a manual. even if they did make manuals, dealerships won't stock those on there lots because of the low-sell rate.
They've had some reliability weak spots like the rear axle, heater core, CVT, etc. Can be expensive to fix for a cheap car too. That's just how late model Mitsubishis can be. Not a bad little car though for what it is. MSRP is too high for what it delivers though. At a discount price, it's worth it for running errands, short commutes, and city driving.
people criticize these too harshly. the trucnk lid not having a cover... common. it was a worthy cost cutting measure. your NOT going to notice a difference in normal every day operations. id honestly be happy to see a even cheaper module with hand crank windows no cameras/computers, manual drive, AM/FM/AUX radio for $5k less and GLADLY would take it over a current model.
To be fair, probably barely anyone would get it, if it didn't have those features. But then again, it might cut about $600 in costs doing that. Not sure. Crank windows work, but it's not much more to have the electric ones, which comes in handy.
I need to add, every new car past 2018 Needs a backup camera, it is required. Like, literally required. Mitsubishi wouldn't be allowed to sell the car here without a camera.
I just wish OP could just review the top trim level called SE. it a NICER upgrade from the BE…which can be had just for FEW hundred dollars more. Below are the upgrades that is arguably a better buy for $20k: LED Head lamps fog lamps LED gauge cluster LED Daytime running light Push button start Heat seats function Auto high beam function Black gloss shifter booth Aluminum accent on AC vents Side mirrors indicator lights 15 inch tires (same design as BE except aluminum color) AND perhaps significant here: convenience factors: there are 2 buttons to open the trunk; 1) on key fob. 2) the button located on the outer wall of the trunk. This is a bigger deal…because all of the other trim level of the mirage sedan (not the hatchback) don’t have this convenience feature. Takeaway: you get what you pay for.
take away: for 1.2 L engine, you get what you pay for daily transportation. what you stated is just overkill for underperformed engine that its purpose is for just that, economical transportation! You can't dress it all up and make it $20k and up and expect to sell like a candies!
I fully agree, the SE is much nicer for not all that much more. Personally I went with the ES. And it's been great. But I would have gotten an SE if they where sold here.. I've not seen an SE Mirage for sale here in over a year, but I've seen the other trims.

I have checked on this daily for the fun and to see the trends…And it practically the same car for a decade. Gone are the days where Mitsubishi offered big discount like rebate to buyers and current owners considering this car vs Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and such. At that time the base model is worth looking at. Now it sort of a hard sell BUT no more Fit, Yaris at the same time. Heck Corolla, Civic Mazda3 are pushing to $30k which is prohibitively expensive thus making the Mirage NOT a bad buy. Lot of folks don’t look at economic trend these days basically.
I own a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback. Modified the car as the years went by. Still up and running for 9 years with a gas mileage of 14L/100km city, 20L/100km highways.
They stopped selling the Mirage in Australia in 2021 because they didn't want to upgrade the car to provide improved side impact protection. Pity... because I always wanted to buy one. It's particularly attractive at the moment because the Mirage is much cheaper than the Toyota Yaris. BTW: CVT's are almost unbustable if you get the right one. 🙂

I wish someone would review the G4 top of the line WITH the Rockford-Fosgate option on its audio system. Will you ever be able to do that? I don't believe that any version of the Mirage hatchback offers the R/F system at all. Am I right? ♐
I have tried for YEARS! The dealer that lets me review their cars never has a mirage with the RF system. I think it must be a very rare option. I’ll keep trying.
It is an option. The optional equipment is installed at the port of entry, not at the factory. The Rockford-Fosgate EcoPUNCH subwoofer system, a $605 option in 2024, is only installed if special-ordered by a customer. I don’t why this is, but ordinary dealer allocations of the Mirage do not receive this option unless specifically requested. Perhaps it is time-consuming to install because it requires electrical wiring to the existing sound system?
This Mitsubishi Mirage (Spacestar in Europe) looks very ugly as a sedan. Luckily we don't have this version in Europe. In Europe we also have a manual 5 speed, wich makes the car fast enough, although it is of course not a sports car, but enough for normal traffic. If a car is light enough, it really does not need 100 hp.
I just bought a black edition. My 1st CVT. its programing and lock up torque converter operate seamlessly. Its faster THAN THE MANUAL TRANS BY FAR. THESE will be gone and you will wish you had one. Super reliable and cheaper to operate than any other car ive had since 1972.
Another example of how Mitsubishi reviews have been since they arrived on the auto scene. Yet the chrysler versions got glowing reviews . Eagle talon TSI or Dodge stealth . OMG.
It's like Mitsubishi just designed the 1.2 engine and said "there it is!" and never made any refinements to it after all the years in production. They should have been able to coax a bit more HP out of it or even bored it out a bit to 1.3 or 1.4 liters. Even an extra 10 HP in a car that light would have helped the throttle response and drivability.

It’s not. Reliable and long lasting but the mirage should top out well before 21,000$ for sure. If it had a turbo charger with maybe 125hp and a semi leather interior maybe 21,000.
Price could come down a bit, I agree with that point. But turbo is just going to add headaches, I rather have NA engine for what this car is. My neighbor's Chevy Sonic with the eco boost turbo engine has had so many problems, for example.

Only two reasons I don't get one is I have a big dog and that might be a little tight with the seats down. The second reason is I'm hoping that the Budget Truck set are under $15, cuz I want one of those.
maaan. all mitsu needs to do is slap a 4G15T and a normal autobox/manual into this thing and it would decimate the economy car market. (and maybe fix the RTC thing for the steering wheel. that's weird. only mitsu that does that) but nissan probably keeps kneecapping anyone who suggests that, so we'll all have to settle for Kia Rios I guess.
I am in the market for a budget car and this car is definetly not worth 21k. You can get a niceky loaded versa for that. Then for 3-4k more you can get into an Elantra, Hyundai Venue abd other bigger and faster cars. I think its worth 18k fully loaded.
Nissan Versa has problems with the CVT as far as I heard and Hyundai products I keep on noticing a lot of issues with drive trains as far the Mirage it’s a bit pricey but the fuel economy makes up also the warranty on them and simplicity of them it’s good I have seem RUclips films on the Mirage with 300,000 trouble free
$21k is a stretch that MSRP... most sell it for $17-19500 Anything used you can buy under $21k come on... dude. Apples to apples... even new a Honda doesn't have a 100k power train warranty. Get over it bro

No reason to change an engine that has proven to be super reliable.
Just got my 24 hatchback black edition and took it on a 250 mile trip. I love it filled up for less than $20 and kept up with traffic great.

With the Mirage engine, it sounds pretty happy at 4,000 RPM. I don't really ever go over 2,500 RPM though, even when merging. @@palebeachbum

I need to add, I do a lot of road trips in my car. My lower back gets sore after about an hour. I put a pillow in for some lower back support, it's just a pillow you would find in a bed. A rectangle shaped one. And it has done wonders. The car is now comfortable on huge trips, I've drove 12 hours in 1 day, and still felt good.
You judge econobox by luxury car standards? That's a smart way to go. Engine sound is much better than 4-cylinder competitors just drive it as the vehicle it is. If you constantly trying to imagine yourself in a car twice more powerful that is only your problem. Mirage is small comfortable car with great mileage. It's good for what it is. If you want something else - look for it in other pace.

I have gotten 52 miles per gallon sustained, 500 plus miles trip.
I got a 2024 Mirage, and do mostly freeway driving, with some mountain driving, and LA city driving. Either way, over the life of the car, 54 tank fills, I've averaged 51.1 MPG.
Though, on freeway trips, I regularly get 60-64 MPG. (: I set cruise to 55 MPH. I drive about 75 miles a day.

It's a tiny, slow, noisy car with poor safety, relatively speaking. Those are the realities of this car. Keep your expectations in check. It's not all bad though. It's the cheapest new car you can get. When driven with a light foot it sips fuel. It's incredibly easy to park. It's got surprisingly good comfort and ergonomics, and a soft squishy ride if you like that, which I do. Overall, it's a fantastic city car. The more extreme the conditions outside city driving, the worse the car feels. It feels very out of its element on the interstate. Speaking from 4yrs of experience owning a Mirage.

Upgrade your speakers, put components in the front. When you take the inside door panels off to do this, you can add sound material, which will make the car quieter. It's a great car over all.

I got the 2024 Mirage hatchback ES, yellow, and it's awesome! Is it possible you can review a fully loaded SE version of the Mirage? Most of the reviews are not of the SE, and it would be neat to see it.
I need to add, I've drove my Mirage 7,200 miles so far, and don't find power an issue at all. I do mostly freeway driving. Getting on the freeway, I turn the left blinker on, so they know I'm entering, and I just give it 2,500 RPM, and what ever speed that gets me to is what I do.
Keep in mind, there are much slower vehicles, like semi-trucks, or U-Hauls. If they can merge with their 20-30 second 0-60's, so can this. (:

Its not as slow as you think. Mitsubishi underrates their cars. This will do 0-60 in 9 seconds with the manual and it will keep up with the Nissan Versa and Kio Rio. The CVT on the other hand is a different story.. unfortunately they don't make the manual version anymore.
i hate that auto-makers and just throwing CVT in everything and calling that a all-purpose fix. they get worse MPGs than a traditionally transmission, which gets worse MPGs than a manual. even if they did make manuals, dealerships won't stock those on there lots because of the low-sell rate.

The older reviews claim its fairly reliable. Must change cvt fluid every 30k and brakes may wear faster than anticipation. Otherwise its fine.
They've had some reliability weak spots like the rear axle, heater core, CVT, etc. Can be expensive to fix for a cheap car too. That's just how late model Mitsubishis can be. Not a bad little car though for what it is. MSRP is too high for what it delivers though. At a discount price, it's worth it for running errands, short commutes, and city driving.
people criticize these too harshly. the trucnk lid not having a cover... common. it was a worthy cost cutting measure. your NOT going to notice a difference in normal every day operations. id honestly be happy to see a even cheaper module with hand crank windows no cameras/computers, manual drive, AM/FM/AUX radio for $5k less and GLADLY would take it over a current model.
To be fair, probably barely anyone would get it, if it didn't have those features. But then again, it might cut about $600 in costs doing that. Not sure.
Crank windows work, but it's not much more to have the electric ones, which comes in handy.
I need to add, every new car past 2018 Needs a backup camera, it is required. Like, literally required. Mitsubishi wouldn't be allowed to sell the car here without a camera.

I just wish OP could just review the top trim level called SE. it a NICER upgrade from the BE…which can be had just for FEW hundred dollars more.
Below are the upgrades that is arguably a better buy for $20k:
LED Head lamps
fog lamps
LED gauge cluster
LED Daytime running light
Push button start
Heat seats function
Auto high beam function
Black gloss shifter booth
Aluminum accent on AC vents
Side mirrors indicator lights
15 inch tires (same design as BE except aluminum color)
AND perhaps significant here: convenience factors: there are 2 buttons to open the trunk; 1) on key fob. 2) the button located on the outer wall of the trunk. This is a bigger deal…because all of the other trim level of the mirage sedan (not the hatchback) don’t have this convenience feature.
Takeaway: you get what you pay for.
take away: for 1.2 L engine, you get what you pay for daily transportation. what you stated is just overkill for underperformed engine that its purpose is for just that, economical transportation! You can't dress it all up and make it $20k and up and expect to sell like a candies!

I fully agree, the SE is much nicer for not all that much more. Personally I went with the ES. And it's been great. But I would have gotten an SE if they where sold here.. I've not seen an SE Mirage for sale here in over a year, but I've seen the other trims.
@@digitaljon1109 yea. The funny is that Mitsubishi produces the ES plentiful across the country while the SE is just very very few. I have checked on this daily for the fun and to see the trends…And it practically the same car for a decade.
Gone are the days where Mitsubishi offered big discount like rebate to buyers and current owners considering this car vs Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and such. At that time the base model is worth looking at. Now it sort of a hard sell BUT no more Fit, Yaris at the same time. Heck Corolla, Civic Mazda3 are pushing to $30k which is prohibitively expensive thus making the Mirage NOT a bad buy.
Lot of folks don’t look at economic trend these days basically.
I own a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback.
Modified the car as the years went by.
Still up and running for 9 years with a gas mileage of 14L/100km city, 20L/100km highways.
They stopped selling the Mirage in Australia in 2021 because they didn't want to upgrade the car to provide improved side impact protection.
Pity... because I always wanted to buy one.
It's particularly attractive at the moment because the Mirage is much cheaper than the Toyota Yaris.
BTW: CVT's are almost unbustable if you get the right one.

I have tried for YEARS! The dealer that lets me review their cars never has a mirage with the RF system. I think it must be a very rare option. I’ll keep trying.
It is an option. The optional equipment is installed at the port of entry, not at the factory. The Rockford-Fosgate EcoPUNCH subwoofer system, a $605 option in 2024, is only installed if special-ordered by a customer. I don’t why this is, but ordinary dealer allocations of the Mirage do not receive this option unless specifically requested. Perhaps it is time-consuming to install because it requires electrical wiring to the existing sound system?

This Mitsubishi Mirage (Spacestar in Europe) looks very ugly as a sedan. Luckily we don't have this version in Europe. In Europe we also have a manual 5 speed, wich makes the car fast enough, although it is of course not a sports car, but enough for normal traffic. If a car is light enough, it really does not need 100 hp.
I just bought a black edition. My 1st CVT. its programing and lock up torque converter operate seamlessly. Its faster THAN THE MANUAL TRANS BY FAR. THESE will be gone and you will wish you had one. Super reliable and cheaper to operate than any other car ive had since 1972.
Another example of how Mitsubishi reviews have been since they arrived on the auto scene. Yet the chrysler versions got glowing reviews

It's like Mitsubishi just designed the 1.2 engine and said "there it is!" and never made any refinements to it after all the years in production. They should have been able to coax a bit more HP out of it or even bored it out a bit to 1.3 or 1.4 liters. Even an extra 10 HP in a car that light would have helped the throttle response and drivability.
It's adequate for this car's weight, and it's RELIABLE, and that's all it needs to be.

Why did Nissan get rid of the hatch? I was just about to look into one since I see Mitsubishi dropped the manual transmission hatch.

It’s not. Reliable and long lasting but the mirage should top out well before 21,000$ for sure. If it had a turbo charger with maybe 125hp and a semi leather interior maybe 21,000.

Price could come down a bit, I agree with that point. But turbo is just going to add headaches, I rather have NA engine for what this car is. My neighbor's Chevy Sonic with the eco boost turbo engine has had so many problems, for example.

Only two reasons I don't get one is I have a big dog and that might be a little tight with the seats down. The second reason is I'm hoping that the Budget Truck set are under $15, cuz I want one of those.

I am in the market for a budget car and this car is definetly not worth 21k. You can get a niceky loaded versa for that. Then for 3-4k more you can get into an Elantra, Hyundai Venue abd other bigger and faster cars. I think its worth 18k fully loaded.
Nissan Versa has problems with the CVT as far as I heard and Hyundai products I keep on noticing a lot of issues with drive trains as far the Mirage it’s a bit pricey but the fuel economy makes up also the warranty on them and simplicity of them it’s good I have seem RUclips films on the Mirage with 300,000 trouble free
