2024 Mitsubishi Mirage: Is It FINALLY Better?

- With rumors swirling about Mitsubishi giving it the axe, the 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage is still as bland as ever - but there are still some central bragging points that will no doubt keep minimalistic, eco-minded buyers coming back for more.
With the same whiney 1.2L 3-cylinder engine making just 78hp and 74lb ft of torque, the Mirage has the distinction of being the only new car for sale in America with a double digit horsepower rating. It’s also one of (if not, THE) cheapest new car for sale, starting at $16,995 for the ES model and rising to just over $20,000 for the top of the line SE trim (a mid-level LE and Black Edition trim, the most aesthetically pleasing of them all, are also available).
The Mirage’s biggest selling point is its 39MPG combined EPA rating, and the fact that it can be had as either a sedan (the Mirage G4) or a 5 door hatchback. The sedan has 3” more legroom in the rear but keeps the same engine and trim options. Our test car was an ES hatchback, complete with 14” wheels and hubcaps. It’s as basic as basic gets but does boast standard forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a killer 10 year/100K mile warranty, and automatic climate control.
For 2024, the LE trim & above gain auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a driver's armrest. The interior is seriously outdated and full of cheap plastic, underwhelming design and lackluster materials; all things you might perhaps expect on a subcompact econobox but still rather shocking at first meeting. For comparison, the Mirage’s only real remaining competitor, the Nissan Versa, only costs a few thousand dollars more and bests the Mirage in nearly every category, including power, options, design and overall fit and finish on the interior.
In the end, the Mirage is decent for basic A to B transportation, and has low maintenance/operation costs. For some drivers, that’s all they need. What do YOU think?

So sad that there discontinuing this car it’s so underrated good car for people with low funding
@@yeaaaaaaboiii yes true that cars big brother the cyborg r was great
I always see a big disconnect between owners of the Mirage and Auto Journalists reviewing them, The view points on both are 180 degree different, The main objectives of this car are opposite of what Journalists expect, but exactly what buyers are looking for. It's a back to basic point A to B car, just like many entry hatch backs before it. We have become very demanding with our rides and the wants always over take people's needs. This car is bullet proof, easy to live with, affordable, dependable, no recalls or engine disasters (looking at you GM and Toyota) Review what this car is designed for, not a toy to play with or focusing on the obvious - next time review fuel milage, easy parking abilities, loading and unloading, not a teenager taking it out road racing at night.
Great little car. I bought one to use as a commuter car. Has been very reliable and economical. The SE has more features and style.
Great for Ubereats!
I just bought a 2024 SE hatch last week, pearl white. It looks a LOT better than this one, it came with 14 inch alloy rims and packed with a ton of features, its even got mud flaps. I got it for MSRP of $18,665.00, but it comes fully loaded. The “pro” critics reviews of these are pure bull… The engine is more than quick enough and capable for city and highway use, it is comfortable, the interior trim is NOT as terrible as they put it. It is the perfect commuter car and grocery getter. It gets constant 40+ MPG, the engine is ridiculously simple to service and maintain, and the reliability is impressive. It is a shame that America didn’t get it with this category of cars… But you know, gotta get that V8 Tundra to go get some bread and milk at the corner 7eleven by yourself 😜
I have a gray 2024 SE as a second car, and I love it more than I’ll admit to my friends. I appreciate how simple it is and what it can do with only 78 horsepower. It made me rethink what you really need in car.
Jumping over to pickup trucks, I wish we got the Toyota Hilux Champ in the US. Most pickups are too expensive and complicated these days.
although some countries really go for 'power' over savings, to each their own. Here in the Phils where we make those they are selling like hotcakes. Traffic is bad here so why go fast anyway? the good thing with this car its simple, basic, brings you anywhere you want to go. better than taking the bus :)
I wish Mitsubishi kept the 5 speed stick in NA.
The Ralliart version screams 5speed... its too bad.
We as a nation have become Such Whining Little Brats! Back in the 80s, in my Teens, this would have been a Loaded Little Car with obvious things that were'nt even available back then! I've had more Posh cars but I definately appreciate Back To Basics cars and this seems like a Great Deal from all I've heard and read! We don't need cars that are so fast that Everybody drives like a Psycho! We need to go back to simple and stop believing the Lie that we need Loaded Cars with Nascar Engines to live our Best Lives!
I really appreciate your multiple reviews on the Mirage. Thank you!
thanks! glad you find them useful.
Really wished Mitsubishi offered a stronger engine like a 1.3/1.4/1.5 4 cylinder with about 90-100 HP and slightly less MPG giving the customer the option to choose between two engine sizes
Or a turbo
@@islami658 turbo is dumb...it will strain and damage the engine.
@@duckling4393 the crappy 3 cylinder they put in there is good for 300hp, its way overbuilt (strength wise)
Bigger engine less space to work on in that small hood, slap a turbo trim all wheel drive manual.
This car is so much fun to drive. You can whip it around like a go cart. Get the SE if you buy one. It has so many more features than the base model. I don't know why everyone reviews the base model. Add K&N filters and consider a chip. It really is a blast. Takes you back to the 90's. Great second car or primary car if your budget is tight.
How awful is it that the crooks who run the car companies are getting rid of affordable cars? I, for one, hate crossovers and SUV's. Also, I'm not fond of the overpriced junk they sell that requires six and seven-year loans.
I wholeheartedly agree with you! Car companies are too greedy nowadays!
So are airline companies, Amazon, gas companies, solar panel companies (PPAs, tax credits, double charges etc), lobbyists, etc. Mitsubishi Mirages, Kia Rio they are all overpriced for being a basic car. People say they are cheap but I don't call $19-20K cheap for a tin can with some goodies in it, but it is what it is these days with inflation.
Looks like a very nice minimalist car!
i have one of these on order, in Canada, they increased their content with standard 15" Wheels, front heated seats and a bunch more, we got it in the same color as your test mule too! This will be my 2nd Mirage, absolutely love the car for what it is! do I need more power? no thanks, better handling? nope, its fine the way it is, improve it in any way? no way man! it's a entry-level commuter car that does what it intends and does it very well, the only thing that sucks is that from what I hear, 2025 will be its swan song!
im getting mine sometime next week as my first car. im beyond excited for it, and similarly to you, i dont care about the handling, power, etc. it gets me from a to b woth great fuel efficiency and reliability, and thats all i need
How long did your first mirage last?
@@xoanone I love mine, but back in the last I drive a '67 Beetle with whopping 53 go. Just need to get used to these lower-power cars.
Granted, my Bug had opt-out cylinders and two-week carb, so it was actually quite good at acceleration.
No problems passing or merging with the Mirage.
agree
Did u get it yet?
We have a 2017 Mirage for a regular car. It has about 60,000 miles with no issues other than normal maintenence. If I am careful driving I can get 52 mpg. Plenty of power for me, only one speeding ticket so far.
I'm glad its been so good to you, but how did you manage to get a speeding ticket in that?
good enthusiastic presentation-ty
I got the 2024 Mirage, got the ES in yellow, and really like it. I went from a 2004 Cadillac Deville. I find the Mirage more comfortable, the seats are softer. It's also a smaller car, sort of go-kart like, which I really like.
I like the car so much I've put 21,000 miles on it in 7 months just driving around for fun. Only really needed to put 2,000 miles on it, rest was for fun. The car is a bit loud on rough roads, might add some sound insulation around the wheel wells. But I like the engine. It has plenty of power for me, I tend to drive in the mountains, and on the interstate. Very little city driving. Taken it up to Onyx Summit, elevation 8,500 feet, at max capacity, well, over. I had 780 LB in it, the max rated is 820. But due to elevation the max was about 700.
Either way, car was very slow at the top, 0-60 was about 40 seconds. But for me it had plenty of power, but you really could notice it unhappy at the top. Also with the seats folded, it has a ton of room inside. I haul financer, lawn mowers, flooring, lots of stuff.
I must add, I've never taken it across the country. Instead I took my moms Ford Maverick.. Not by choice though. She won't ride in the Mirage. I wish I took it though, the Mirage is more engaging, and uses less fuel, and is weirdly more comfortable.
Why won't she ride on the Mirage?
@@oscargonzalez5231 she is afraid of it because it's small she won't even take it around town let alone at speed
Glad to meet another Mirage aficionado! Take care of your yellow Pikachu and it will last you the rest of your life
It's called the Mirage b/c I can't believe what I'm seeing.
My 1,8litre from 2005 still goes well
These were cancelled in Australia not long ago. It was no longer going to comply with side impact standards, and mitsubishi wouldnt pay to update it.
In indonesia and malaysia theres some cheap new car like this but in manual no radio no ac
Called axia E (for malaysia market)
Daihatsu Ayla D (for indonesia market)
Only $5000
Perfect for rideshare
Looks ok from the front, "that's what I told her."
I have the mirage sedsn and it's awesome
You do like to harp on how little the power is of these cars, I bought a '23 Mirage se last year, and reading up on the Mirage forum pages they have here you can pick up alot of points on how to make due with these cars; in fact you didnt even mention the S drive for the automatic, if you take the automatic shifter and put it into drive, then push it to the right, you'll be in Sport mode, which allows the valves to open higher for more fuel at the higher revs when merging onto a freeway, Ive done it many times a day, and the sport option, if you leave it topped out at 4,000 rpm you will have all the acceleration you need, and once you are at the speed you need to be at, just push the transmission shifter over to the left again for economy driving. Now that you know how to properly drive one of these, everything else about them you did capture right, they are easy to work on, have a 100,000 mi/10 yr warranty, have a great reputation for being reliable and trustworthy cars to own.
Finally a car that wont give me a hard time finding parking!!!!
i love so called critics- ...
The worst part about the hatch model is how close the rear seat is to the rear of the car. If you get hit from behind, those rear passengers will probably be toast. For that reason, I prefer the G4 sedan model.
Where I live the Mirage has already been stripped off. Only the Attrage's exist now (they are still going strong)
Dont forget to mention RISE,Mitsubishi exclusive
Does anyone one who has it knows if you can out 2 child carseat in yhe back ?
The G4 Sedan is actually quite spacious in the rear... you may not get them in the hatch version.
Two seats can fit for sure
buy a slimfit carseat, someone fitted 3 carseats at the back... the only challenge is the stroller, limited choice and it occupy ~60% trunk space
Toyota Tacoma has drum... Lots of manufactures still make drums in the rear.
The Versa isn't as reliable either.
Are you gold pony’s brother by any chance? You kinda look like him.
Lmao no but we are in the same area.
@@overdrive_reviewsohh ok thanks for replying 🤭
I was genuinely considering this for my first new car purchase for a daily driver until I learned about the steering wheel not bringing itself back. Genuinely sucks that it doesn't have that.
Mitsubishi Mirage owners get used to it, at least do a test drive
@@sachinnair91 I will test drive it, but it seems like it takes a while to get used to
I test drive a mirage last year and it bring itself back. I love the super cold AC and turning radius is great
As little as i like the Mirage, as little as i've always liked the Mirage for being such a downer of a car, uninspired, boring, same interior for 10 years by now...
The worse the car industry gets, the more i respect Mitsubishi for soldering on in giving America cheap new transporation with warranty, to let the people who need it not worry.
Doug DeMuro was wrong about the Mirage. It is a dreadfully boring car, but for some, it's the only option.
For those paying attention, traffic has gotten so bad you are stupid if you are worried about getting up to 60 MPH. I own TWO Mirages!!! I have gotten up to 69.5 MPG in 2017 !!! I took a pic of the display !! I have a 2018 too that I have gotten 60 MPG. So, ha on you... I love going 500 miles between fill ups !!! I've owned Lincolns in the past, big deal .. 16 MPG.... This guy is a spoiled little joke boy.... these are where the jokes are aimed.. Noise ?? SHUT UP AND GET OUT!!! YOU'RE WALKING !!!
SHUT UP LITTLE BOY ..
a good alternative to the 2024 mitsubishi mirage..... is two 2023 mitsubishi mirages.... old joke but fun joke
You review cars and can’t pronounce Porsche? Yes, I’m that guy.
Literally no one says Porsh-uhhh - let’s be honest.
@@overdrive_reviews Those that are car savvy do. Don't want to sound uneducated. I grew up in the 1960's with an uneducated father born in 1915. So, I remember how embarrassed I was when he mispronounced words. Then I got a job working for a local school district and working around college educated people every day I worked extra hard not to embarrass myself.
@@overdrive_reviews Literally everyone who is a “car guy“ does with the modern exception of Matt from @carwow Although it’s looking like most British people do just say PORSH.
@@nicholase.9195 what if I'm British!?! :)
Mitsubishi? Low maintenance? LOL
Bmw? Low maintenance?
All u need is to know your speed, pay a tho, more, stupid remark
SUVs are mom vehicles *STOP BUYING THEM YOU DON’T NEED IT YOU DON’T HAVE AN EXCUSE*
No rust and very mint condition
0:31 for folks who want simple A-B transportation, and don't want a ton of maintenance, and not a high car payment, just get a freakin base Corolla. It's so much better.
@0:06 Utra cheap doesn't necessarily mean steal of a deal if you talk about value.
In this case, it does. I can barely find 2018 or newer used cars with fewer than 60k miles for less than 10k in my area (my first car was a 2012 Impreza with 55k miles, which I bought in ‘18).
If your videos are worth a damn you should not have to ask people to loke and subscribe. For that reason you earned yourself a thumbs down.
trash car
nice little cheap car
How do you know?
it's a great car
Did the dealership get you behind a $130k Ram 3500? 😂
