We all love music here at OX towers, but some video game music is just so epic, cool, heart-wrenching or beautiful in its simplicity, that they really struck a...*chord* with us... ahem... Here, then, are those musical moments that make us stop and go "whoa..." whenever we hear them. 🎵🎶

Jane really nailed describing music with visuals that have feeling. I often see visuals when I listen to music, so this calm ocean with deep and ancient life, meanwhile running from behind the horizon with crazed eyes and high energy comes this punk, metal, spikes wearing guitarist to ADD to the splendor of that ocean in their own unique way. Just outstanding! Thank you Jane!

When Undertale came out, I didn't really get the hype. I finally played it about a month ago, while university work and depression were cleverly teaming up to crush me; when I got to the mirror in Asgore's home I cracked and cried for the first time in months (and only the second time since the day my dad died). Now, like many others, I will always have a place in my heart for Undertale.

I want to see a breakdown of the contrasting feels of music in Portal and Portal 2
Portal very much gave that cold, clinical vibe, and so so lonely
Portal 2 felt more "alive" almost. More dynamic? The world around you is much more active. There are more variables at play, the facility reveals a chaotic side no longer concealed by crisp, clean panels. And parts of the track emphasize how vast Aperture is.
    Awesome game, amazing soundtrack

The theme from Dragon Age: Origins is an amazing piece. Start off with beautiful elven(?) vocals, interrupted by the brass and drums of a darkspawn horde. The Grey Wardens arrive, pushing back the horde, but at the end of the song the threat still looms.

Seriously how is 'Leaving Earth' not on this list. When the music begins, Shepherd (and therefore the player) is leaving the planet of their birth in the throws of its destruction. it is hard to imagine a dry eye after experiencing that. Hopefully most people will never know the heart break of living though the destruction of their home through war or disaster, but this piece of music will make sure you have a pretty good idea what it feels like.

My favorite music moment is in the opening mission of mass effect 3, when Shepard is fleeing from Earth as the reapers destroy it. The music that comes with the reapers is all sound, then suddenly punctured by the loud horns. Just makes you really feel the hopelessness and loss that comes with that whole game (the song is called "leaving earth")

Fleeting Dream from Final Fantasy X always has such a big big place in my heart. It's one of those pieces of music that plays as great ambience alone, but in the context of when it is used in the game it just kicks in your chest but marches you forward, making it really fitting for what the characters are going through - and you alongside them. Streets of Whiterun- Skyrim. Music does a lot to me, and I frequently use it to put myself in a certain headspace. But nothing, _nothing_ sounds better to me than the Streets of Whiterun. I was that kid who would put on random video games to just sit in a zone and listen to the music (before the age of youtube), and I found myself doing that in Whiterun again. I just turned Skyrim on, intent on playing some, loaded into Whiterun and then... managed to do what I was putting off, with Whiterun's theme in the background. It's the sound of your family greeting you after a long day working. It's the sound of your partner there on the couch, next to you in front of the fire. It's the sound of a morning when you wake naturally, sunbeams floating without a care in through your windows. It's the sound of a warm hearth in the cold winter. It's the sound of safety, peace and *home.* It's the sound of the most important thing in the world, and what you'll go to the ends of Nirn, and beyond, to protect.

Not to mention that the melody from Nerevar Rising ended up becoming an unmistakable musical theme for the later Elder Scrolls titles (Oblivion, Skyrim) -- plus the fan / mod community for TES have further cemented the iconic status of Nerevar Rising thru multiple tribute covers & musical reimaginings (my personal favorite is "The Elder Scrolls" by Jon "Bosa" Babbs from the "Morrowind Music Overdose" series).

The biggest musical moment for me in gaming was the "leaving earth" scene at the start of Mass Effect 3.
You've had two full games and countless hours leading up to this exact moment, and theres this beautiful piano peice playing as you get into the shuttle that manages to be equal parts hopeful and bleak. Then this Reaper comes in and gives off this juxtaposing mechanical sound in time with the music as the tension rises, that stops and goes back to piano as the shuttles explode and everyone is dying.
Then you rise up and see multiple reapers decending upon Earth as the music swells, and it's this feeling of "this is the end" in so many different ways, and it's just such a magical moment. I genuinely burst into tears on my first play through.

Something cool I noticed while listening to the soundtracks of Assassin's Creed is- you can find Ezio's theme in Assassin's Creed 1, it's not the full version we all know and love, but the first few notes are there. If you listen closely to the soundtracks "The city of Jerusalem" and "Flight Through Jerusalem" you can kind of hear it. So it's cool how you can hear the beginning in the first game - and how the rest of the games flesh out that leitmotif.

“Fódlan Winds” and “Chasing Daybreak” from Fire Emblem: Three Houses are two of the BEST songs I’ve heard from video games in my life! They both sound pretty epic, but while “Fódlan Winds” acts as a great default battle sound that highlights the strategy aspect of the game, “Chasing Daybreak” is just a crescendo of mystically epic intensity that you’d expect from a final battle that makes you FEEL the stakes of the battle. They are just beautiful😌

The Bayonetta "moon" tracks are always a massive musical element of all the games, but I adore the recontexttualisation of Moon River in Bayo2 more than any other - nostalgic, elevating and unquestionably Badass

The Witcher 3 not spoiling when/why it's used but the track I think it's name is 'the wolf and the swallow' is probably the most reliable way of making me cry
Or for pure nostalgia the first bandland theme from Rayman one, the song used for the biggest difficulty spike in games but is so relentlessly cheerful you don't even mind

The Fields of Ard Skellig - The Witcher 3
I still remember the first moment I heard it. After HOURS of wandering the endlessly grim bogs and forests of Velen, killing and burning everything that snarled and gurgled at me in the wrong way, stepping off the boat on Skellige, riding out into the rolling crisp hills with those Tolkienesque white topped mountains all around. Then those angelic vocals kick in. Truly a breathtaking moment.
I actually had to put the pad down for a minute and just let the beauty of it all sink in. There is something even mystical about that song. Awe inspiring

i know this is an old video and this game wasn't even out when it was made but wave goodbye from splatoon 3 just Gets Me for some reason. despite having never played the previous two games it still feels like i'm saying goodbye to friends i've known for ages. especially the part where you can hear human voices singing along to the squid sisters, it feels like our entire (in the game long dead) species is joining them for one last goodbye before finally moving on and leaving the earth in the hands of the new lifeforms that have now taken our place. it's wild that a song of complete gibberish sung by fictional squid idols can make me feel so many things.

    1. Leaving Earth - Mass Effect 3 it fit that moment and just great.

I know I'm suuuuper late to the party, but that 15 seconds of music Luke was freaking out about is a little piece in Twilight Princess called "Courage" and is primarily used as Collin's theme and when you inspire Prince Ralis to move forward after his parents death. I don't know if Courage is unique to TP, but I don't remember hearing it anywhere else.
