Creative X3 Review - $120 Perfection with "Super X-FI"... Is it the New CMSS 3D?

  • For a long time I have been asking Creative to bring back CMSS 3D, which last was featured on the Titanium HD Sound Card, though this time with the X3 (which is a portable USB DAC and ADC), they have introduced a different hardware processing called "Super X-Fi". We first checked this out at CES in early 2019. Though it looks like the tech is finally here, and it really is a cool piece of configurable tech to play around with to get fully immersed in your audio, it sounds a tad different to CMSS 3D, though does very similar things. I am sure with enough tuning you could get it sounding identical.
    Though as for the frequency response, crosstalk and objective numbers, this DAC simply DELIVERS.
    Check out the Creative X3 Here: amzn.to/2I4miNq

    The X3 is a no-brainer purchase when you're looking for better sound, it's the best little audio gadget I've had in years, it has so many settings and features to play with plus it has Creative's new Super X-FI technology! And with "SXFI Gen2" (which comes as a free X3 firmware update for all owners) it has become even better and Creative is already working on "SXFI Gen3"! Thumbs up!

    I'll add to the "you don't want to damage your ears" remark with my experiences.
    In 1999 I had a small container explode 18-12" from my left ear, could only hear hi pitched static while other sounds sounded as if they where far away and underwater.
    Years later I got an ear infection that made me effectively deaf in my right. While I was lucky and both time my hearing returned I'm left with a permanent low hiss. Its easily ignored with other sounds, but I need white noise to sleep or the hiss is loud enough to disturb me.

    Super X-Fi is building off CMSS 3-D. SUper X-Fi's is more or less the same as X-Fi's old Entertainment Mode, which is one of the better virtual surround sound convolutions out there, but they've added a few more tweaks, such as customization (an old technology they acquired from Sensaura, a British technology firm in the early 2000's).

    Honestly the software was a little bit buggy but the sound it put out was amazing and it used to blow my friends away as nobody really used a PC as a sound system back then.

    On a side note - If youre serious about home audio and already have compatible speakers $100-120USD would probably buy you a pretty good secondhand AV receiver. Yes they are 10x the size of the X3 but the added bonus is that you can hook a lot more stuff up, can stream music via wifi/bluetooth, has FM/AM and net radio and the quality of the sound will leave the X3 in the dirt providing you got decent speakers. Obviously you wont get the fancy 3D audio gaming related features that Creative has to offer on their products but you will get a super high quality sound system that rivals that of cinemas if set up correctly with good speakers to match....
    Even if you dont and you just hook it up with expensive bookshelf speakers from an old hifi unit you found in the shed. It should still sound pretty good. Apart from my subwoofer. my entire setup i bought pre-owned and that saved me a tonne of money.

      do those $120 used AV receivers have USB digital audio input ? because of not, you are still running it off of crappy onboard audio and I don't see how that can sound better than the X3, also the X3 can still be hooked up to a receiver.

    CMSS3D isn't coming back. That tech took hundreds of audio channels and calculated positional audio from them. Ever since Microsoft killed hardware accelerated audio with Vista, we now only have 7 channels or so max.

    • @xXYannuschXx
      @xXYannuschXx 3 года назад

      Actually, CMSS3D on the Titanium HD supported this via OpenAL, even on Vista and higher. Sadly game devs didnt care (because it didnt work on consoles and the release of the Xbox360 and PS3 MASSIVELY shifted development from PC to consoles (which was further amplified by Microsoft pushing console gaming, because "PCs arent for gaming")) and Creative ended up only doing ONE major update of OpenAL to version 1.1 and then making it EOL.
      You can however still use OpenAL Soft (an open source continuation of OpenAL) to get HRTF to work in games using OpenAL, sadly this doesnt support EAX function as good as the Creative version, let alone the ones that had hardware accelerated EAX.

    You are right - old X-Fi released in 2005 was better. Now all games have integrated audio engine or using open standards like FMOD or OpenAL for better multiplatform support.
    This engines processing all sounds by CPU, creating 3D sound stage on speakers or headphones. No need to have this kind of features that Creative try to sell. Ordinary USB DAC will give the same job like clean output. Creative effects can give only distortion in audio that was originally designed by game developer.
    Back in 95/98/Windows XP era all sounds was create directly by sound cards by DirectSound3D interface. And Creative make most advanced sound cards with EMU DSP hardware audio procesor. Last one and best was X-Fi.
    Every audio source was placed directly in space and separately render by creative audio engine and finally merged by CMSS-3D in true 3D audio sphere.

Is the SXFI magical, not really but I really enjoy it over the SBX processing. The main thing is the rear channels sound like they are actually behind me and not at an ~160 degree angle right next to my head. The SXFI is also very nice for any video content even 2.0 sourced content. For music it is hit or miss. The older the recording the more I tend to like it.

      This is much newer than the G6. It has game chat mixing, proper side-tone without delay, a better design. It has all the same gaming features. SXFI is personalized from ear scans and face scans so you may like it after it's been personalized. SXFI itself is not the surround. You have basic virtual 7.1 surround as usual, and then you can combine it with SXFI if you like it better. It's a G6 and then some, with the newest Creative Sound Blaster Command software that the G6 doesn't even support.

    • @adaml.5355
      @adaml.5355 4 года назад

      CMSS 3D was not killed by creative, it was killed by Windows Vista and up because hardware accelerated audio was removed completely. Even if you had one of those cards, the CMSS 3D wouldn't work. That was back when hundreds of audio channels were mixed and placed on hardware, now we have Windows Spatial Sound and 7.1 Virtual Surround. So don't call these products junk when it was completely out of Creative's hands. Imagine how angry they must have been when Microsoft shot their entire business in the heart as game audio was fantastic. As for SXFI, it's a completely different technology. It's just meant to simulate room acoustics and a full speaker system in a personalized way.
      SXFI is personalized, and it will sound completely off to a listener that does not have a profile synced and setup.

    Good review, but bit pricey for my wallet, plus no Linux support for the software, so I'll have to pass on this one.
    Far as tinnitus PLEASE PLEASE take it from someone who's had it most of their life, (almost 40 years) due to being born with hearing loss issues, as it can effect your daily life just trying get threw it, like holding a normal convo with friends, family, girlfriend, co workers, clients, etc.. not being able to hear what they are trying to tell you, It can effect your ability to determine your spacial awareness, it can effect your equilibrium, your bodies balance, your ability to drive a car/operate machinery(it's part of the reason I can no longer drive), it can cause depression, and I've even seen it drive some people mad to the point they commit suicide from it, with William Shatner(Capt. Kirk of Star Trek) being a famous case of nearly doing so at gun point. So if you don't have it, than PLEASE use decent headphones/earbuds/in ear monitors, don't crank up the vol. to max, and take care of your ears. If you have it there are treatments for it, but none, and I MEAN NONE are guaranteed to work, do to the many causes of tinnitus, and can be expensive AF!! as your health insurance might not cover them. My best advice for those dealing it when it gets overbearing, is a dark room, some GOOD headphones/earbuds at a medium vol. with some calm relaxing music to just chill out, and zone out to let your brain try to tune it out best as it can. Good luck, and may GOD bless ya!!

      Great post. Can also confirm having tinitus for 18 years now, ONE gig for an hour where the DJ booth was 10ft from the main stage speakers means it took an hour of my life to cause that damage that is now permanent. It also means I find it hard to hear someone I'm talking to if there is a lot of background noise. Fun fact if you blast your ears with overly loud sound for more than 15mins, your ears will reduce what you actually hear and dull them to prevent them getting damaged. So if you've noticed you turning it up again that's your ears telling you to stop it. Carry on by all means if you want to hear a continual high pitched WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE in your ears when you are trying to get to sleep........forever.

      @@djmandrick Thanks, and yep that Weeee!!/Cricket sound rarely ever goes away unless I'm passed out asleep(I guess after almost 40 years my body has learned to live with it), but playing audio over headphones at a NORMAL volume does help drown it out some, and keep me sane, but super quiet spaces are the worst like when I have my house to myself when my girlfriend goes shopping with her daughter, or I'm at work by myself in the afternoons after my clients leave for the day, and I'm doing paperwork.
