Acid Pattern Writing Fundamentals with the RE-303, a Din Sync replica of the Roland TB-303, by Beyun

- For everyone confused/frustrated with writing 303 patterns in the box, here is Beyun's overview (and some tips) of the PATTERN WRITE mode on Din Sync's RE-303 (w/ the Sonic Potions CPU installed).
The RE-303 is a REPLICA (not a clone) of the original Roland TB-303. The TB-303 is a bassline synthesizer that was originally designed to emulate a bass guitar but became the foundation for the Acid sound after Phuture released "Acid Tracks" in 1987. Remember tho, it's not so much about the 303 but HOW you play it that defines the true acid sound...but more on that later.
Please note that some of the behavior outlined in this tutorial will be VERY different from the TB-303 due to the CPU choice. For instance, I don't think it's possible to RUN the TB-303 while changing the pitch or time information. That being said, this CPU choice does not affect the sound of the RE vs the TB-that sonic character is largely due to the analog circuitry (especially the CAREFUL choice of diodes and transistors). But for sequencing, the Sonic Potions CPU makes it far superior to the original.

Thank you! finally some one with a sick RE-303 tutorial... ps 10:25 for random pattern generation what I like to do is shorten the pattern by 4 notes beginning at the end of the 2nd page. For instance start with a 16 note pattern. Randomise (pitch or time) for the entire sequence. Then shorten pattern make it 12 step (take away the last 4 notes). Randomise pitch / time. Now 8 step, randomise again. 4 step pattern, randomise. Done. The randomise affects only the active notes, so by shorten the pattern the randomiser skips the remainig notes. If the forward direction doesn't sound nice revers it. Anyway 4 is just to give an example , what ever works for you.
I LOVE my RE303. I had to get the sexy black and silver version. I love playing patterns backwards. Andreas built my unit- Swapped it for all my Volcas. Never regretted it. Anyway, great vid!
Yeah I have my re for a month now... And it's so nice, the bass is heavy and detailed compared to my other clones... And the square sound hollow as it should.. Or when I turn on square wave I can work with that, too. With the beringer only the square worked well for me..

It's no different, except it's even more like the 303 in what you can do. Most of this tutorial still applies, as long as you leave out all the cool pitch shifting/pattern rotating features that have been added with this CPU.

This is a great tutorial. I don't have an RE-303 (yet), but I have the Bass Bot V2. Although the sequencer is different, you have given me inspiration on messing with pattern lengths, slides etc. I've been looking at the Kumptronics site for a while and wishing for a black cased RE-303. I had an original, but sold it to get more out of the box, I was getting bored moving drum sounds around on a grid. Thanks again! Chris

I’m using your video to program the Behringer TD3 lol...I have basic understanding, but need to know a little more information, and you seem to be the only one that goes there in an understandable way. Thanks.
Couple of things...
1. When Accent is engaged, it whacks the Decay down to the minimum setting. So the Decay knob won't have any effect on notes with Accent on them.
2. Pressing both the UP & Down buttons while in Patt. Write mode with play back the pattern randomly.

Great video! I have original 303 (devilfish modded) and the new behringer clone, and on both you can enter time mode first and just tap the note value instead of setting steps. That said I didn’t know you could do it your way. Thanks for the heads up!
Great tutorial thanks for taking the time, it made me have second thoughts about having the Pixie CPU in my 303 and not the Sonic Potions.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah...the original TB-303 functionality is a nice with the Pixie, but modern functionality with sonic potions + original sound is even better ;)
I think my problem was I’ve had so many 303 clones that didn’t cut it, when the builder said do you want your re303 to be exactly like the original TB303 I was like “hell yes” without even considering the other option
@@sw_909 you can swap it out yourself, assuming your builder used a socket for the pixie. Which they should have. Also order it from thonk instead of the sonicpotions website. Theres a shipping black hole in frankfurt

I just got a Behringer TD 3, and can program it fairly well, but your tutorial has helped me out more than any one I've seen so far....you should get a korg ms2000 and do a tutorial on that...or just all sound machines

I’m tempted to put the Sonic Potions CPU into my TB-303, too.
Another playback option I noticed. If you press and hold UP then press DOWN, you’ll get a pendulum playback. So there are four pattern playback options altogether.

@@Rprth hey no problem I feel you ;) I had the luck that one guy 30 km away builds many din sync 303 and 909 with rare parts and love. He even wanted me to store the re properly in my bag. The step between your behringer and the re will not solve all your problems for making good acid, that is possible with your stuff, too. But indeed the sound is much more deeper and better. I bought a eventide space and it can sound just as many of professional acid tracks I know. You tweak the knobs and it feels and sounds right. So I would recommend it. Search for somebody you trust, I could give you the address here in Germany, maybe he ships it to other countries. You can trust him, that's important. I can't believe that I own my re just for three months, I saw it with my comment. Musically happened so much with it.

all aside with how well you put this together being really clear in the explanations, using graphics smoothly and all that I can't help but feel that your voice is just really a down right pleasure to listen to. I'm glad I heard about the RE-303 so I found your channel :) I hope you get a reason to make more tutorials, or just talk about the music you do and the process you usually use or something.
I'm totally new to all this (just got a korg monologue and started experimenting) but this all still made sense to me. I dunno how much work it would be but I'm interesting in making music with stuff like this and without a computer. would you say that is foolhardy or doable?

Hi and thanx for the video I have an issue maybe you could help and I can't get my hands on another re 303 - ( pretty rare ) for rotating patterns it just rotates when I press the paternities clear button bot resets back when I un-press everything works great for the pitch and time mode changes they stay but am having an issue rotating the pattern ..
Hey! I don't have the RE-303, I just have the TD3 (arrived a few hours ago) but I'm not here for a brand fight. After ordering my unit, I started looking for more tutorials on sequencing using the physical unit, not the Behringer software. I know the box has a rep for being awkward, but I wanted to know how to do it this way. And damn, even though a few other tut's had been pretty clear - This is far and away the most thorough and comprehensible tutorial I've seen so far.
The comments on the LED's C# and D# in the sequence banks, for example... That's awesome attention to detail. Do you know if the TD3 does the same? Mine doesn't appear to, unless I'm missing something...
The rest of it - All spoken so clearly, no overtly difficult tech jargon. Simple and clear language backed up with a workflow that doesn't move too fast. Subbed, and sharing. Thank you so much for the time you've taken to help others among us.

Hello! Thank you so much, I learned a lot. But I have one very important question. How do you run only midi? On my MIDI in re-303 I can only send notes, and the start of the internal sequencer is only through dinsync24.

Do you have the Sonic Potions CPU in your RE or the Pixie? Is your cable plugged into the Sync port (which is dinsync24) or the MIDI IN port? I use the MIDI IN port.
What kind of MIDI interface are you using? If you are using it with a DAW, did you configure your DAW to send a clock start/stop signal to the MIDI interface? Also, is "MIDI Sync Rx" turned on the RE? And did you make sure that either MIDI Rx is turned off or that extra MIDI notes are not being sent while sending the clock signal?
To get into MIDI config mode on Sonic Potions, you can hit Function + Clear. If the LED for D is lit, then MIDI Sync Rx is on (which is good if that's the case). Once that's confirmed then you need to look at your DAW and MIDI interface.
My setup:
An ERM multiclock to trigger my outboard gear with a dedicated port for the RE. I never send MIDI notes through that port, only clock info.

303 is not so easy to write a pattern while it run( i have original). to Hear what happend when you pusch a note of pitch or time mode this re 303 is realy easy to use write a pattern and you explain it DOPE ! Probs to you.
Great stuff! Any chance you also played around with a 303 using a Pixie CPU? I was offered this choice when building mine but opted for the SP since the Pixie doesn’t support midi from external sequencers.
haven't played around with the pixie CPU. my understanding is that it's closer to the original TB-303 CPU functionality than the Sonic Potions.

I'm just received my RE303 today and seem to have an issue with selecting the number of steops / C#/D# and selecting number of steps.I'm wondering whether this is a feature to the CPU you're using or whether mine has an issue. Can't tell you exactly which cpu i'm using lol
see if your RE-303 behaves similarly to the one in this video linked below...if it does you probably have the pixie CPU which wouldn't have a lot of the features I go over here. ruclips.net/video/0k7PPY3e9p4/видео.html
you can still select the number of steps by holding down FUNCTION and pressing the STEP button for the # of steps you want in the sequence. that's the OG way of doing it :)
I'm waiting for my "tech" guy, to build me one....The NAVA Extra 9 he built was off the charts, so excited for this replica....Not a snob, but "Bear....in...gear" doesn't come close.....

great video! if i ordered the parts and pcb and case and paid someone to build it - about how much should it cosst?
There are a few makers who will handle all of that for you, like Andreas Kump (kumptronics.com), and will save you a lot of time and headache. He will give you a quote on the final box (you don't have to order any parts yourself). The issue with ordering parts yourself is that you have to be careful to source exactly the right transistors and diodes or the sound will be off from the original. Additionally, the experienced makers know who to source their electronics from to get proper working components and have all the diagnostic tools (scopes, function generators, etc) to make sure everything is in working order. Getting everything set up to build just one machine would be way more expensive than asking someone like Andreas to source & build it for you. :)

Well explained. Actually there is no reason to buy an original TB303 unless you're a fan ready to pay 2000 bucks more than this replica with a) more useful functions and b) same sound.

Whats the difference between replica and clone ? isnt this just schemantics..
The replica is 1 for 1 the same circuitry and electronics (as close as possible with modern components) as the original. Clones have different circuitry and vastly different electronics (transistors, pots, etc are all different) from the original.
@@VaultWax thx, and in the application it matters why ? based on your definition it would then be said that Roland's own 'recreations' are all clones ?
@@synkuk It's a matter of taste and one's ear at the end of the day. And, yes, the TB-03 qualifies as a clone, not a replica. When you spend a lot of time with the instruments, you get a feel for their nuances. I find the TB-03 to be a bit tinny in the highs, for instance. Also, the knobs on the RE feel much more sensitive in comparison to the TB-03, so there is a sense of greater control over its "squelchy expressions".

@@synkuk I own the TB-03, RE-303, and both editions of the TT-303, so I'm going off personal experience. The RE-303 is exactly like the original (which I've also gotten the opportunity to use in person). TB-03 I got before the RE and the difference between the two is very noticeable.

These replicas should really have an MIDI input so you can send notes to it from a software sequencer.
Learning antiquated step sequencing is NOT what's important about the 303.

@@VaultWax how do i change the MIDI Rec Channel (FUNC+CLEAR seems to get me to the Config mode but then pressing UP/DOWN per Sonic Potion's manual doesn't appear to actually change the MIDI Channel) -- how does Re-303 handle channels above 9?
