Recreating The 303 Acid Pattern From Claustrophobic Sting By The Prodigy On Liam Howlett's TB-03

- So I made this video during this global lock down. A perfect opportunity to distract myself from such troubled times. After previously making a video on Liam Howlett's original TB303, I thought I'd see how I could recreate the same acid break from Claustrophobic Sting, using Liam's Roland TB-03 Bass Line
I think I've managed to create an easy step by step guide. Like the previous videos, I appreciate any positive, constructive comments regarding any mods or improvements to the pattern.
For any new fans, the track.Claustrophobic Sting features on the 2nd album by The Prodgy, " Music For The Jilted Generation "
This video was made for no profit, but simply made with a love for the beats.

This video really helps to showcase what a pain in the ass it is to program a 303
idk, you can get pretty quick with them after a while, but it is also the 'pain in the ass' programming that gives way to so many 'happy accident' acid lines haha
@@ColonelForkEyes Exactly. The whole thing about acid is that you don't really know what you're going to get until you hit play. It's a serendipity machine. It's only a pain if you're trying to copy a line you heard somewhere else... but it was interesting to see this anyway :)
= ) Indeed
@@ColonelForkEyes 100%!
I know it is heresy, but I have really enjoyed the 3rd party options that have blown up around Behringers TD-3 Clone for editing over USB. I can have the same sound and in-show flexibility but upload an entire set's worth of patterns from scratch to ready in less than 5 minutes using a sequencer program and just sync over USB. And, it was only $130USD
Mint!
My mind is glowing.
This brought some flashbacks jammin on propellerheads Rebirth software in late 90s....those acid sounds are still the best to my ear...
Yo... I spent so much time in Rebirth back in the day. I actually bought it on iPad before Roland made them pull it off the app store. Still got it!
best as in better than the hardware rebirth was based on? agree to disagree mate
@@wolfgangrecordings We have a winner here...you get "No shlT Sherl0ck" award....

Best straight to the point tutorial I've seen
Exactly this, sadly i have seen this video after a lot of pain.
I know the word genius is overused but Liam Howlett. Damn. What a composer.
Genius
This is so sick to see how much of a ballache it is to learn how to do this.
It always melts my brain to think that musicians and producers were able to make all that music back then without any YT tutorials or online resources to show them how to do it.
We were very, very bored.
I haven't a clue what you just did, but can appreciate the skill, love the Prodigy.
This is really well done. The graphic on the left that highlights and the way you describe the steps is excellent.
Thanks man✊
my mind is glowing... well done mate!
Thank you
So crazy to think this track is 27 years old! Bought the album when it first came out.
The Main Step is to Switch The Synth On .
Also plug it in if you have no batteries😉
Easily one of the best dance tunes of all time and definitely one of the Prodigy's best from their best album. Also easily one of the best albums of all time.. groundbreaking and still sounds fresh decades later
Break and enter will always be my fav from Jilted, but def the best album for sure (imo).
Their first album is my favourite by far - so many memorable tunes
@@snares187 I think poison is better but ok
please make more 303 videos just like this. This is dope. And I don't even own a 303
I've got a couple planned
The Prodigy are my favorite “band”, Music for the jilted generation generation is my favorite album, the Narcotic suite is my favorite part of the album, Claustrophobic sting is my favorite part of the narcotic suite!
First 3 albums are insanely great. Too bad the music was only produced for stadiums from there on. The first one will always be my favorite when the music was purely about having fun.
@@epicon6 I totally agree with you! The weather experience gives me chills every time I listen to it!
@@epicon6 yeah that shit was SPECIAL! I never really liked the later slow heavy break stuff either

Just bought a Beringer TD-3 for $150 JUST to recreate this song and make this kind of shit. Love it.
Same here mate, brilliant bit of kit 👍
I am waiting for my tangerine clear case to come in.. that's sht looks so dope
damn, this synth with a keyboard attached looks dope
Acid was so good in the 90’s
Wait this is really Liam's 303?! How did you acquire it?
Liam donated it to a charity auction in 2018
Damn... There are people out there with Andy Fletcher's Emu or Liam's 03...
I realized it's the tb-03 not a 303...he must not have had it long.. Still cool though
@@balazstorok9265 Andy Fletchers Emu is a dummy model with no electronics inside. Comes with a free invisible inflatable banana. You have to provide your own hand claps.
@@trefwoordpunk2225 dude wut? :)))
Sick job. Sounds perfecto. Love that graphic you made on the left side... super easy to read and understand
I don't know why this was in my recommended list or even why I watched it. Don't know the first thing about that bit of kit you've got, but loved watching how it was put together! It sounded spot on, great little video.
Haven't listened to the Prodigy for a while, that will have to change tomorrow!
Nice well bro. I’m pleased a fan has the Roland Tb-3 of Liam’s 🤘😜 wicked job. One of my favourite tracks aswel.
👌 superb mate 🐜
Thanks, so much time lately to experiment and a great way to distract from this virus
jiltedgenerator yes mate nice one it shows 👌. I’ve been able to chill and doin some stuff aswel.
Be safe bruva.
🤘😷🐜
Everybody loves a 303!
This just seems like such a horribly clunky way to create music.
I'm amazed they managed to get anything done
I understand correctly this TB-03 Liam used to record New Tourists (that is, he held and used it with his own hands), if so, tell me how he got to you (judging by the inscriptions made with a marker)
This machine was used to make the No Tourists album then Liam Howlett donated it to a charity auction in 2018
@@jiltedgenerator Very intersting how this machine fell into your hands :)
Охрененная тема))) до сих пор заходит.
I have never touched of those HOWEVER this was very interesting and i appreciate the marker customisation, very cool B)
the sound of this machine is legendary and unforgettable
Your video made me go back and give "Jilted" a thorough spin. It had been years since I've listened to it, and was reminded of how great it is! Cheers..
Just this minute bought the album on vinyl again. Amazing record
The day rebirth came out was imho the day music lost a lot of creative friction. Like me.. trying to make electronic stuff with a roland u20 and some software on my brothers old atari.. not really in to the tech stuff and just wanted to play.. well.. there is not a lot of recordings done from that..
Slick as fuck, dude :) Expertly done :)
Cheers
Finally
Someone showed this pattern
Som maybe now it's time for the remaining
Poison
Funky Shit
Stand Up
And Light Uo the Sky/We Live Forever
Fantastic work man, brilliantly executed.
Thanks
excellent chart on the left, that made it dead simple.
It can only do sawtooth waves and square waves right?
That is absolutely mind-glowing ;)
So sick getting a visual representation of how such a beat was made. Very nice

03:12 perfect!
You've just cost me money! Obviously gunna have to buy the tb-03 now. Great vid!
all this lock down business, no better time :)
brilliant mate! I don't own any TB's but love Prodigy and watched this just for the heck of it! still..awesome
Still nobody else can makes tunes like this!

How anyone can wrap their head around any of this Is beyond me.

You gotta do some more of these
This same TB303 was used by Daft Punk for their song Da Funk.
Now THAT was the real deal!!

Thanks, please come back and reply when you've done it. Let me know how it sounds
@@jiltedgenerator I've done it. It sounds marvelous. It comes very VERY close to the original. But I guess that's because the TB-03 ain't the TB-303. One way or another, it gives me goosebumps all the way. Thanks for this. 😉
@@jiltedgenerator good vid ,is the same way u press it for the tb3 aira bass line when u do the accents and slides

How’d you get a keyboard on the TB-03?

Sounds legit except for one little thing - When counting through the measure of the track the first downbeat is not on the highest note that the pattern starts with. The "one" is on a low note and the "two" is on the high note and since it's an eight note pattern, the same goes for downbeats three and four. So in order to synch this pattern to the original you have to start it on "two", not on "one"...
I'll give that a try later and get back to you. Cheers
@@jiltedgenerator OK thanks, that would be great! Just use step five as the start of the sequence and it should synch perfectly.
прикольно получилось
do you really own his old stuff? how did you get it?
Charity auctions, and a couple from friends of Liam
Sadly the TB03 is a Digitally cold horror show compared to the ORG303.
I watched this right before you deleted it earlier lol
For those wanting to do this on a Behringer TD-3... It won't transpose up 2 octaves, so I did high C up, C down, C up, B, C, high C up, C, B down, and then turn the tune knob to +3 to get it in the same key as the original. This is what Liam must have done in the first place.
htf should I transpose 2 octaves? But the answer was already in the first comment there looking at me 😂👍
For years I've used my x0xb0x with Sokkos and wondered why people claimed the 303 was hard to use.
Then I bought a Behringer TD 3 and realized I was spoiled with the x0xb0x,
My mind is glowing
nice vid man 😎 ive done it with A# and A and slightly different (one Accent more and without a REST-Note) on my TB-303 and Beringer TD-3 but it sounds the same 😁
(you can check my video if you like)
Will have a look now. Thanks for the input
My mind is glowing
you even sound like Liam Howlett
😂😂 we couldn't be further apart in accents. Do you know what I mean. Great comment though😂
i programmed this into my TD-3 and it translated perfectly. Now im trying to program it into my TB-3 and the slide/tie functionality is different and its totally failing to reproduce this groove!
Great video! Respect!
thanks mate, took longer to edit the video than to program the tb03
Hello mate, it seems a lot of people have their own way of writing this classic pattern.
Here is the one I use for my Roland TB-303:
PITCH - GATE (ON or OFF) - DOWN (Y or N) - UP (Y or N) - ACCENT (Y or N) - SLIDE (Y or N)
B - ON - Y - N - N - N
C - ON - Y - N - N - Y
C - ON - Y - N - Y - N
C - ON - N - N - N - N
C+ - ON - N - Y - N - Y
C - ON - Y - N - N - N
C - ON - N - Y - Y - N
B - ON - N - N - Y - Y
I'll give this one a try mate when I cracked them open again
@@jiltedgenerator UPDATED (try this):
PITCH - GATE (ON or OFF) - DOWN (Y or N) - UP (Y or N) - ACCENT (Y or N) - SLIDE (Y or N)
A ON N-N-N-N
A ON Y-N-N-Y
A ON N-Y-Y-N
A ON Y-N-N-N
A ON N-Y-N-Y
A ON Y-N-N-N
A ON N-N-Y-N
G# ON N-N-Y-Y
Tuning - All the way up
Cut Off - Almost all the way down
Res - All the way up
Env mod - 2 points to the right from middle
Decay - All the way up
Accent - 2 points to the right from middle
Tweak to taste.
Behringer td-3 unbelievable bargain. Strongly recommend every tb 303 fan to look into it immediately if you arnt aware it exists
I appreciate your job. I came across this video while trying to emulate the pattern by myself. However, the graphic may content a mistake in the steps tempo indication duration. If a black note fits in one step then a half note (or minim) needs 2 steps. The chart has 7 black notes and 1 half note, which adds up to 9 steps, but we only have 8 steps to fit in. Anyway, it helped me a lot.
I actually shazamed it bwfore u played the original track and got 2 songs, nails and a dj remix of another song lol
MY MIND IS GOING..... HAHAHAHAAAA MY MIND IS GOING.... HAHAHAHAHAHAA
Glowing *
The one time the uploader was happy to receive a copyright notification👍 Spot on mate 👌
🤣OK, this is one of the best comments I've ever read on YT...

I bought a sheet of LSD once that had this synth pictured on the blotter. Every synth was 50 hits. Another acid pattern...

Excellent Video!! I got a Roland TB-03 and Behringer TD-3 and trying to really get my head around programming them and looking at other well known lines. 👍
I'd be so nervous that I would erase all of Liam's presets lol. After this quarantine is over I'd love to meet you one day for a beer and a jam session!
With this new version of the 303 you can back up all presets on a computer and reinstall if things go wrong
@@jiltedgenerator that's a great feature. Lost everything from several synths over the years, it can be devastating to say the least. You seem to understand this gear well based on watching your vids. Would love to hear some of your own work.
Sick
Mate I love what you did here!
Cheers, was interesting to learn
I've never really associated Prodigy with acid before. I would have said break beat techno but this is definitely an acid track.
When I think of acid it's usually something like; Acid Junkies - 181, Mike Dearborn - Birds On E or Robert Armani - Spectacular. I'm even up for a bit of Woody McBride sometimes.
Not sure if they're still uploaded here but Paul Birken had a couple of good live PA sets on youtube.
I’m just a prodigy fan. Have no idea what going on here
Superb video. I am going to order one, just to give it a try. Thank you!!

sound of TB-03 is very bad
That’s the point
I wouldn't call a sound that still gives me goosebumps after 26 years "bad".
It's an aquired taste

This riff / tune reminds me of taking copious amount of magic mushrooms. Greats days! Bangin’ tune live btw!!!!!
Amazing how it becomes a live right at the end. Amazing insight. Thanks. 👍
I love how for the first five seconds there is no sound whatsoever so I thought my fucking headphones died **slow clap**
Great video, the setup with a (animated) info sheet to the left, excellent video edit job, all over a great job man.
Great job on recreating the pattern, can suit as good tutorial for the people who own the machine.
I remember when i was like 10-11yrs and that intro with water and screaming kids made it the most uncomfortable song for next decade of my life . I love Prodigy but this song is not for everybody, I´m 32 now
Very well done. I highly appreciate the grafix table at the side to further underline what you are doing. Role model!
