  • In South Korea, most men in their 20s and 30s oppose feminism. The movement is so popular that conservative politicians are using it to gain voters and win elections. VICE News Tonight looks at what’s behind the anti-feminism movement, and the danger it poses to women’s rights.

I think politicians on both men and womens side try to instigate hatred on both young men and women.Sure women in their 20s in korea live a pretty shitty life. But so do men. But if the young people are busy fighting each other over gender, the older privileged class can quitely secure their interests.

I lived in SK for a few months, and every guy and girl I talked to said that they can't even begin to imagine thinking of being married and starting a family when rent alone has doubled in the past 5 years, while wages have stayed relatively the same and the job market has shrunk because of covid and global economic downturn. It seems to be the exact same problem in japan. Maternal leaves are a bit of a joke, paternal leaves are unheard of You have to pay a fortune to live in a tiny apartment in a major city. Imagine trying to do that with kids and a spouse. In this day and age, even two incomes in some countries/cities aren't enough to raise kids. as a korean adoptee, i know first hand how korean society views women. i learned that single mothers in korea are about the most stigmatized group of people in the country. theyre basically seen as 2nd class citizens, esp. compared to single fathers. to the point where they have a whole np organization dedicated to supporting them called KUMFA. since 1990, 90% of "orphans" in korea arent parentless at all. they simply have a single mother. and whether they were widowed or their husband left or they were just a boyfriend or fling or whatever, it doesnt matter.
Even with abusive partners, they may encourage the woman to stay or get married to them if they have a child. if a women doesnt have a man around their arm, the child is viewed with disdain and oftentimes family relatives will sneakily take the baby when the mother isnt aware and secretly bring them to an orphanage where they're cut off from their family line forever. the mom can spend years and years desperately searching, but the baby is already overseas with new parents. and adoption agencies will straight up lie to couples that the child is an "orphan" or that the mother "wanted to give them a better life" when in reality, the child was basically trafficked. sometimes hospitals will even take the baby right after birth, taking advantage of the mothers state, and secretly bring them to an orphanage. and then if the adoptee wants to find the mom? well, too bad, because usually the child, if theyre on the family registry still, will have to go through the father to find them, since its a patriarchical system. and sometimes that father is reluctant to say anything or even admit the child is their dna child, like the case with Kara Bos in 2020. and then also oftentimes the mom cant see the child anyway because her new family will look down upon her for having a child out of wedlock.

I gotta say, seeing the disturbing messages sent to the female activist and what the male activist heard in the rally, just reinforces my point that South Korea really lacks a space for people to have proper discussions between two genders and the worst extermists of each side just goes to worsen the image of both sides which have reasonable motives behind their existence. People don't like to discuss these kind of topics offline, but even in an online space I feel that the discussions are so seperated by genders that no actual discussion is ever created. And yeah you can say the US also has the same problem but the movement for feminism, gender equality and the general discussion around the topic is more accesible compared to Korea.

Using the fact that women are murdered at a similar rate to men as a sign of gender inequality against women is certainly a weird take. The stats I'm seeing show 54% of victims as men and 46% as women, which is pretty close to what you would expect if there were no gender bias. How is a lack of gender bias in murder victims a sign of gender inequality?

As heartbreaking as this is, this isn’t surprising. People here have to understand how SK society is where it’s at today. After the Korean War and the country was in shambles, the sole priority that emerged was improving its standing on the global stage. Naturally, the only metric that SK would use to gauge this progress is the state of its economy. As a result, they only obsessed over economic results, numbers, and rankings. In doing so, they neglected the social well-being and health of its people. Basically, SK grew up too fast physically but not emotionally/mentally. So to men, they believe their perspective on entrenched norms and their privileges aren’t out of place.
But in order for society to move forward, discussions like these have to take place. So while it seems really sad to see gender conflicts right now, I see it as a critical first step to getting the ball rolling

As someone from a country that's often lumped tgt with SK, Japan, Taiwan, etc. as having an East-Asian developmental model, I somewhat agree with this take but I would like to highlight that this is severely depoliticised view of history. What is the reason that these countries had a lot of "economic progress" but no "social progress"? Because for most of their history, they were authoritarian/semi-authoritarian dictatorships where democratic and social movement were annihilated, and activists were targeted and even killed. How come not many people bring this up? Because these dictatorships were backed by the US/the West...
In the beginning of the video the feminist march is holding a banner with two slogans, one about women's rights, one about the length of the working day. Because misogyny is not just an issue of holding on to old patterns, it is fueled by male anxiety that's captured by neoconservative movements.
Even today, Japan and South Korea rely extremely heavily on traditional patriachal models to handle needs such as childcare, care of the elderly, aka the woman stays home or works AND takes care of the household. However, this is basically untenable today. It's basically a similar story to the West, when men feel powerless due to economic precarity and losing the traditional role of dominating over their wife, they lash out at women...

The last line "My greatest fear is that men and women lose their gender identities, and end up being identical apart from their genitalia" (14:21) encapsulates the primary issue perfectly. You can easily draw logical connections to every single issue with traditional masculinity and anti-feminism (even when not under those labels) from this fear alone.
In my opinion, quelling this fear in young men and understanding its causes is a big part the way forward. I would have loved to see Hanako press further on the logic behind the fear itself, but this was great reporting and I applaud the choice to approach the topic with a larger focus on the feminist opposition.

Feminists seem to have an issue with everything traditionally masculine. That is the problem most men have with them. Every time there is a social issue, feminists are always blaming “men”, “the patriarchy”, “toxic masculinity”, or “traditional masculinity”. In other words, men! Women as a group are hardly ever handled accountable for some of the issues we currently have. Hence, we are tired of being made to feel like villains for things most of us are not responsible for.

I believe the fear is the expectation and treatment of men in relationships nowadays. We are expected to be earn a significant income, be emotionally available yet unbreakable, be always dedicated to our partners happiness meaning all our free time is their time.
That has been my experience during my last 3 relationships. One was a very long one.
Heck even for child custody and government support. The 3 friends in my circle give the cheque to their ex spouse. Two gave up completely not by choice on getting joint custody. They reluctantly accepted 1 weekend per 2 weeks. Misleading narratives or outright false accusations were brought against them. The other guy took a loan out after being with his ex spouse for 4 or 5 years to pay all her debts. She left him within a month of the loan being taken by him. He had to fight to have her make payments on the loan. She did not pay the majority of the loan.
There are some amazing women in this world. My mother, sister in law, grandmother and cousins. All of them are honest, proud, strong, intelligent and hard workers. Sadly nowadays I witness more stories of a woman taking advantage of those with no recourse or say. Also some men who mistreat women too. I lost an aunt to such a coward.
So in my opinion there is a social issue. Men are considered more as labourers. I understand a child is not conceived by only one and in the past many women were left penniless. Still no dad (not on drugs, alcohol, not violent, no criminal records, no domestic reports or anything except he has diabetes so he could maybe pass put though it has happened for 10 years) should not restricted from seeing their daughter because the mother is spiteful. Yet that is acceptable and commom nowadays. This is the reason these organizations are happening because some men feel mistreated in some cases rightfully so because of their gender. The same mother decided to move as far away as possible recently because my friend was finally given more visitation rights. It has been 3 years. He hold got 1 to 2 days every 2 weeks a year ago. He doesn't even fight or complain which days.
Anyways there are some terrible people with no hearts or kindness in this world. Even in my family I have 2 aunts and 2 uncles that I struggle to even acknowledge at all due to their past actions.

I think that the intersectionality of income inequality (rich vs. poor) and gender dynamics play a key role in this potential anti-feminism. Historically, men have been defined as "the provider" someone who is the breadwinner and protects their family. As the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, average [men] are unable to buy a home, raise a family. Thus, men lose this title of provider and are, as a result, emasculated in this sense. With the advent of Feminism and the struggle for gender equality _slowly_ improving the lives of women, Feminism and women become a scapegoat for misdirected anger by emasculated men. _i'm (men) losing, they're winning. They (women) must be the bad guys causing this_ Furthermore, I think the lack of empathy for women's struggle by these men undercuts any common ground they may find with Feminists as they fail to see their own inherent privilege as men. In their minds, without this [privileged] provider role, they are essentially 'nothing'.

Everyone wants to blame the problems of capitalism, such as recession, and the absolute requirement that we fill in the supposed labour gaps with new sources of labour while trying to underpay them - on everything and everyone except capitalism. Let's blame women for wanting equality in the workplace. Let's blame gays for having a marketable demographic. Let's blame liberals for the fact that an automobile requires a fraction of the man-hours to create than it did when the industry was at its peak. Let's blame conservatives for believing the lies that conservative politicians tell them about "bringing jobs back" while at the same time taking in money from the industries they surrender to regulatory capture. But let's never blame capitalism itself, because otherwise we might want to, you know, adjust it or move beyond it.

I heard men say that they don't care that women in NY or other places are getting beat up, they often mock women, especially those who are older or struggling, etc...we just wanted to be seen as individuals and to feel safe.
