@@catchingupkate It's not just family drama. It is heartfelt, emotional, and heartbreaking family drama. Some of the best I have ever seen. If you are prone to crying, you better get a big box of Kleenex.
Happy you've decided to watch this series. It's one of my favorites. Creepy & scary and overall a good story. Kudos to the director / writer Mike Flanagan. His next series that he wrote after this one "The Haunting of Bly Manor" is also worth watching.
so I've read the book, and it is amazing, but it is a book you can read in a day, and this is a 10 hour series. The two or almost nothing alike; it is truly only inspired by the book, but the book is worth a read.
Thanks! Once we got a couple minutes in I realized this was probably an adaptation since the characters were living in modern day and I know the book was older. Still makes me really excited for the book to see the inspiration :)
Hello. I am so happy to find you watching this AMAZING show. As far as the book goes, I consider this show to be inspired by the book more than an adaptation of the actual work.
Mike Flannigan who created this show also has created amazing shows, The Haunting of Bly Monor, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, movies - HUSH. You should react to all of them!!
10:30 lord, I was watching peripherally while folding laundry and started to yell at my poor cat for walking in the entertainment center but it was your cat lmao
Your guesses are so funny. They're perfectly sensible guesses and any of a hundred other films/shows would go in that direction, but of course Mike Flanagan doesn't. I'm enjoying these reactions even though they're a year old. I'll keep watching.
That makes a lot of sense, especially since they all seem to be distanced from each other and working through what happened to them in vastly different ways
@@Hey_Jamie I never bought into the stages of grief theory. How about you (I'm asking here but let's save this convo for the episode 10 comment section)?
_"I want to believe!"_ Are you an "X-Phile", perchance? 👽 I've experienced so many "preternatural" things, especially during my teens, that I would be living in denial if I'd just dismiss them. During my teens, I experienced a lot of what could be considered poltergeist phenomena. In the field of parapsychology it's not considered to be caused by some sort of entity, it's rather a term used to label what might be uncontrolled telekinetic activity originating from a specific person, usually a teen. While I might not be that crazy about a couple of episodes in this mini series, others range from great to absolutely outstanding! The sheer craftsmanship that went into this show is admirable. I was a bit hesitant when I saw this first episode. First, it doesn't really follow Shirley Jackson's book much at all - Flanagan kept some names and the general concept of a haunted house, but that's about it. Reading the book or watching the film (the 60's one, not the subpar 90's flick) won't spoil this series at all. Flanagan consider this series to be more of a tribute to Jackson's book, but I kind of wish that the series would have been given a different title. I actually avoided watching it for a couple of years, believing that it was just an attempt to make a fast buck from a classic. Second, I didn't like the "fake" jump scares that we saw in this episode, but they toned that down a bit in the remaining episodes. I generally dislike jump "scares", as I almost never find them scary at all. It's way too often used to pass something off as "horror" when all you actually do is to startle people, not scare them. However, if well-executed jump scares have their place and this show features one of the best ones I've ever seen. Well, scratch that, it _is_ the best one and it actually furthered the story, too! There are hidden details in this show. This episode has several such scenes, whereof one is something I noticed after I became suspicious of why the episode took such care showing the clock besides Hugh's bed. Presumably, that clock was what he "saw" in his nightmare, yet when he answers Nell's call you can see the exact same time being displayed on the phone. There are many other hidden things, but I'll let you discover them on your own!
As we got a few minutes into the show I did realize that it’s probably not a direct adaptation from the book, but I love that because then I’ll get to read the book and have a completely new experience. My parents always loved X-files so I would catch episodes here and there, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to dedicate time to and actually watch through. I live in CT and I’ve always been spooky stuff adjacent. One of our priests would come into my dad’s diner and tell us stories about working with The Warrens. The Vatican has a looooong process for approving exorcisms so they basically gave the Warrens “blessings” to do them but wouldn’t be formally associated. Our priest was someone who tagged along as an observer. Idk if I believe all the stories he told us but HE certainly believed what he was telling us. I’m really excited to continue the show, I wasn’t expecting the intricacies and hidden details and family drama so now I need to pay more attention for sure! And I don’t mind people pointing things out I missed if it’s not a spoiler. I’m someone who picks up and pats attention to human interactions and emotions I tend to miss hidden details 🤷🏻♀️
PRAISE YOU!! I thank the universe every time someone decides to react to this brilliant show! It is a masterpiece! But if you want to do yourself the biggest favor, AVOID reading the comments or turn the comments off even until you’ve finished watching. Trust me you will thank yourself. Because people are too stupid to not know what a spoiler is, and that even expectations are spoilers. No one seems to want to allow reactors the chance to watch the show organically, as it’s meant to be. They’ll say “oh pay attention to this” “can’t wait to see your reaction to _____” Just trust me. AVOID THE COMMENTS AT ALL COSTS
Thank you! I made my brother a mod so hopefully I can avoid spoilers 🤞🏻 I am making my way quickly through the show though and hoping to get them up quickly as well!
I’m so excited people are freshly reacting to it. Best show ever. No bullshit.
My brothers have been begging me to watch it and I’m glad I finally am! Just watched episodes 2 & 3 and I’m hooked. Thanks for being here 😁
@@catchingupkate it’s so good. Be sure to have a box of tissues handy when you watch
This is an excellent show if you are exploring horror. This is such an incredibly well written show.
I’m already hooked! I wasn’t expecting the family drama and thought it was “just” a spooky house story. I am so excited to continue on :)

Nothing is really as good as this though. No where to go but down after this.

I’m really enjoying it so far, I love the family dynamics. I was thinking about trying to squeeze Bly Manor in this month too so hopefully I can 🤞🏻
No, it isn’t. Midnight mass is worth the watch, but compared to hill house it’s just meh
This time of year I only watch people reacting to this show, it's the best 10 episode show ever!!

I heard an interesting theory that that the kids represent each stage of grief.
That makes a lot of sense, especially since they all seem to be distanced from each other and working through what happened to them in vastly different ways
How about don’t do this in comments and just let people watch the show without feeding them information
